Lost in the forest one night, we find the body of a wolf, its throat torn open, the wound a cupful of rippling
black milk, where maggots curl star-white in their glistening darkness. The eyes hum with flies, which drone a joy
into the bones, the brain, wander into the labyrinth through the tongue, still hanging out in half-howl.
We keep walking, holding out our hands to feel our way through the dark as if we could touch as it touches,
know it as it knows the stars that float in the vacuum of its voice, that grow brighter and louder
until it unsays them, takes them back. I know first there was light to give the void a shape. I know
what has no beginning cannot end. I can hardly see your face out here but I can hear you breathing.
Your voice opens and says I think the path is this way, floats out, crosses to me
in a little cloud-boat and is gone— Keep talking. How did the story go? How dark it was inside the wolf,
which had begun as a clump of darkness inside another wolf. Then the child climbed out its belly
shining, without a name— with only a red cap by which to call her and the animal guts in her hands.

Letter from the Ice Field, December
by Sara Eliza Johnson
In the dream, you stand at the end of the field beyond the house.
You bury something. Your hands glow like milk in the dark.
You bend, your shovel lifts pieces of moonlight into the air.
I try to call you inside but my mouth locks with frost.
The room of the skull floods with snow. I have forgotten how you sound.
Your hands fall like milk into the well of darkness you dig
and I cannot see beyond it. This is to say, I wake
with a deeper void. I am beginning to see the body as a well
and your absence as a thirst that pushes its hands
down my throat, lifts the bucket, drinks and drinks. A saint said
when the dead visit us in dreams they cannot know what they do.
You came to the field. You cut off your ears.
Your hands fell through me — two lights I almost broke
in half wanting. Tell me what you thought you were doing
when you tried to lay your body into that ground.

Emily Singer at Daily Kos:
House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republican leaders are trying to kill a push by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida to give new mothers in Congress the ability to vote by proxy as they recover from childbirth and bond with their newborns. Luna has the votes to pass the bipartisan legislation, which the Republican is co-sponsoring alongside Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) and Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D-CO)—a new mother who has had to travel to Washington, D.C., multiple times with her infant child to avoid missing critical votes. But Politico reported that Johnson and other GOP leaders are trying to find a way to stop it from passing by bullying Republican members and even possibly changing the rules to block Luna's legislation from making it to the floor for a vote. [...] The discharge petition that could force a vote on the bill has 218 signatures from members of both parties, signaling its wide support. But Johnson claims he doesn't support the legislation because he believes proxy voting is unconstitutional, and allowing new mothers the opportunity to vote by proxy after giving birth is a “slippery slope” to allowing more groups the ability to proxy vote, like members who have to care for sick spouses or children—as if that’s such an awful thing.
[...] More likely than not, Johnson’s opposition to proxy voting for new mothers is due to his party’s extremely narrow House majority. Absences from Democratic lawmakers like Pettersen could help him pass partisan legislation with more breathing room. But the optics of this are terrible for the GOP—and even Republicans are admitting it.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA)’s opposition to proxy voting for new mothers in Congress is an attack on motherhood.

You know what’s kinda funny to me, how people say they hate or dislike country music because it’s only about a guy losing a girlfriend or wife and drinking his sorrows away.
But if you listen to some of the older songs it’s more than that. They tell stories about soldiers who didn’t make it, missing an opportunity, a baby being born and how they changed the parents’ lives, mental health, abuse, death, the way your view on love changes as you age, disabilities, battles, how the good book can help you find a higher power, ghosts.
The people who are saying that they don’t like country music are probably only listening to the newer artists, not taking the time to go back and see the older generation and hear the stories they have to tell.
If you’re interested I can add a few songs to listen to! 🥰🤟🏻
