Santiago was also Pedro Albizu Campos's barber.

The Ponce Massacre was a peaceful march in 1937 that turned into a violent police shooting where 19 civilians were killed and hundreds were injured. The march had been organized by the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico by the governing Spanish National Assembly in 1873, and to protest the U.S. Government's imprisonment of the Party's leader, Pedro Albizu Campos, on sedition charges. U.S. appointed Governor Blanton Winship, his chain of command, and the police who took part in the massacre, and even admitted to mass shooting, were never prosecuted or reprimanded.

These events directly led up to what would become known as the "Gunfight at the Salon Boricua," where Santiago Diaz, in a standoff with military men sent to his barbershop to attack, lost three fingers on his left hand which flew among the crossfire, as well as a bullet in the head, but remained alive.

Unfortunately it is still illegal to fly the Puerto Rican flag by itself [without the American one right next to it].

He needs to find Nini.

Santiago can feel his hands trembling, the way his stomach twists unsteadily into knots, and there's a part of him that somehow knows that it won't even begin to settle until he sees her, until he can touch her and physically verify that she's alright. It's not something he's ever felt before, but given the current circumstances, perhaps it's understandable. But whether it is or isn't, he needs to find her, much as he might want to offer some sort of comfort to Christian, to Toulouse. He should be a better friend, but right now all he can focus on is the woman he loves.

He'd had no clue about Satine. Of course he's been aware of her and Christian, that they'd been sneaking about behind the Duke's back, but now...now she's gone. He can't process it, it just doesn't seem real. She'd always seemed so full of life. It wasn't supposed to end this way. And maybe it's illogical, but nonetheless it's a stark shock to the system, a reminder that nothing lasts forever.

Everyone is everywhere, gathering in small groups, comforting each other, holding each other, tears flowing, sobs echoing through the Moulin Rouge. The most aggressive reporter was Luis Enrique "Bibi" Marrero - and for good reason. He was born and raised in the Chicaro section of Santurce and he knew Vidal personally.

"How many Nationalists are in there?" he asked the National Guard lieutenant.

"Twenty or thirty."

"Are you sure?"

"Stick around and find out." The lieutenant had no reason to exaggerate, but Bibi was not convinced.

"Oye, Vidal," he yelled.

"Quien habla?"

"It's me, Bibi. How you doing in there?"

"I'm all fucked up."

"I got a radio too. It's got all this American crap."

"Do you need anything?"

"Yeah, a ticket to Cuba."

"Maybe we can arrange it. How many guys are in - "

BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG

...and Bibi ducked for cover again.

No one was going anywhere that day. Two machine gun volleys gutted the entire building. The stucco facade crumbled. The balcony fell. Almost every door and window collapsed from the .30 caliber shots. But Vidal kept popping up - in one window after another - and firing like a madman.

The gunfight continued for three hours and hundreds of shots were fired. Vidal had an enormous stash of ammunition, hidden somewhere in the barbershop, and he wasn't shy about using it. At one point two detectives tried to crawl in through a busted refrigerator, and he blasted them back with a shotgun. Then he started singing an aguinaldo, and people started cheering for him in the street.

The lieutenant resented this cheering. He ordered the two Browning M1919A4 machine guns to fire continuously. All the mirrors shattered. Glass, shrapnel and chunks of cement flew all around Vidal's head. Something sliced through his right cheekbone, and took the skin along with it. He was shot four times and lost three fingers - they flew off his left hand and landed somewhere in the blasted room.

The lieutenant yelled, "Cease fire!" and grabbed a bullhorn. "Vidal Santiago," he called out. "We don't want to hurt you."

Vidal laughed inside the shop. "Tell that to my hand, pendejo. You shot it pretty good."

"You and your friends...come out with your hands up, and no harm will come to you."

"I don't have any friends."

"What you do have, is one minute. Come out or we're coming in."

When a reporter translated this for the lieutenant, he ordered the machine guns to fire again. They strafed the cieling, vaporized the barber chairs, exploded the walls into hundreds of supersonic rocks, until a staircase collapsed and knocked Vidal unconscious.

A dozen soldiers stormed into the barbershop, but they couldn't find any Nationalists: just four walls spattered with blood and rubble covering the entire floor.

"Where'd they all go?" said a soldier, as they searched for a hidden exit or a trap door. Everyone expected 30 Nationalists to come staggering out, but the barbershop was deserted - as if they'd been fighting a ghost. Then suddenly a soldier called out.

"Holy shit! Come look at this!"

Everyone ran over and stared at Vidal, in utter disbelief. The barber was covered in blood and broken glass, apparently dead, but just to make sure, a soldier shot him in the head. Then they dragged him out by his feet.

The soldiers were embarrassed: 40 trained men - with machine guns, grenades and full military ordnance - had been battling for three hours with one barber. It was doubly mortifying because the entire island of Puerto Rico heard it live via radio. But then, as they hauled the corpse into the street, things got even worse.

The corpse opened its eyes.

The soldiers jumped and dropped Vidal on the sidewalk.

"Oh, Jesus!" yelled one.

"I thought you shot him!" shouted another.

A third ducked behind a car and started praying. The reporters ran in all directions, taking photos, grabbing their microphones, telling two million Puerto Ricans that Vidal, the little barber from Salon Boricua, was alive!

Within minutes every house, barbershop, beauty parlor, and bodega in Puerto Rico knew about the spectacular heroics of Vidal Santiago Diaz. He became an overnight sensation throughout the island, and a legendary figure in the history of Nationalist politics.

He was the barber who defied an empire, with a bullet in his brain.

many  would  trust  the  woman  on  her  set  of  brown  doe  eyes.  not  him.  not  when  his  siblings  had  proven  him  a  million  times  over  that  such  questions  did  have  a  right  and  wrong  answer.  even  when  they  insisted  otherwise.    “  now  you’re  just  putting  words  in  my  mouth,  ”    he  wastes  no  time  to  interject,  with  a  feigned  accusatory  tone  in  his  voice.  maybe  her  melodramatic  antics  bring  it  out  in  him  too.    “  but  i  have  feared  for  my  life  in  a  los  angeles  traffic  jam  with  you  behind  the  wheel.  now  imagine  going  two  hundred  miles  per  hour  into  a  sharp  corner.  ”    now  he  might  have  a  reputation  for  being  careless,  but  that  doesn’t  equate  to  having  a  death  wish.  he  would  still  prefer  to  live  to  see  another  day.    “  in  hindsight,  maybe  i  am  saying  you’re  a  bad  driver.  ”

she  watches  him  carefully  ,  almost  as  if  the  answer  would  solve  the  world’s  biggest  problems  ,  a  matter  of  life  and  death  and  at  the  same  time  ,  puts  out  the  hardest  fight  to  not  just  burst  out  with  laughter  .  “  it’s  a  trick  question  only  if  you  want  to  make  it  one  ,  ”  arms  shrugging  and  she  hides  her  face  in  a  plastic  cup  full  of  coffee  and  just  as  she  places  the  cup  back  on  the  table  ,  her  jaw  drops  down  open  ,  her  manicured  hand  placed  on  chest  in  a  dramatic  gesture  .  “  oh  my  god  .  are  you  saying  i’m  a  bad  driver  ?  ”

Paintings by Josefa Teixidor, also known as Pepita Teixidor (1875-1914). Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.

Josefa Teixidor is considered the best flower painter in the Catalan Modernist movement, an art movement where flowers and nature were very present. She was celebrated during her life, and she was chosen as one of the three artist who would represent Catalonia in the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1900, together with Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol.

Despite the recognition of her work, at the time women weren't usually allowed to exhibit their work in art galleries. Josefa Teixidor, together with other Catalan women artists of the time like Lluïsa Vidal, Visitación Ubach, Antònia Farreras, and Maria Lluïsa Güell, fought for the right of women to exhibit their art in Barcelona. Her success allowed her to exhibit her work here and also in France. She was also involved in the Catalan feminist magazine Feminal, that gave support to and published about the work of women artists, scientists and industrials.

She was awarded both in Catalonia and in France. Soon after her early death at 39 years old, she became the first woman who was neither a saint nor a queen to have a statue dedicated to her in Barcelona, Catalonia's capital city. (Even nowadays, Barcelona only has 14 statues of women who aren't saints nor queens, and that is including fictional characters. For comparison, Barcelona has at least 168 statues of real men in that category).

Sadly, most of her work is owned by private collectors, only the three paintings included in this post are owned by a museum (MNAC). However, MNAC owns a huge collection and exhibits only a fraction of it, and none of Josefa Teixidor's works are displayed.

While making this post, it was difficult to find images of her work in good quality, because for some reason MNAC didn't have her works uploaded to their online catalogue. I sent them a message about it, and they answered the next day with the three works uploaded on their website (many things can be achieved by complain at the right people!). I hope making these paintings publicly available, together with this post, will make Josefa Teixidor more present in our minds. Sadly, she has been forgotten by most of society, while her male contemporaries like Rusiñol and Casas are still among the most famous artists of all times in our country. When we think of Modernist painters, from now on I hope we also think of Josefa Teixidor.

The Olympics are over, but I needed to give a shout-out to our delegation. We are not many, we didn't win much, but each single one of them gave it all and from here we fiercely supported and followed every single one until the end.

MADRID (AP) — Veteran Spanish right-wing politician Alejandro Vidal-Quadras was shot in the face in broad daylight on a central Madrid street on Thursday. His life was not in danger, according to the hospital where he was rushed for treatment.

Police said Vidal-Quadras was attacked at around 1:30 p.m. local time near his home and that he was conscious when taken to a hospital by emergency crews. A motive for the shooting wasn’t immediately disclosed.

According to Spanish state news agency EFE, police believe the shooter fled the scene on a motorbike, wearing a black helmet.

Four hours after the shooting, Madrid’s Gregorio Marañón hospital issued its first public medical report on Vidal-Quadras’ condition. The hospital said the gunshot had fractured his jawbone and that he will undergo surgery. It said he was in stable condition and that his life was not in danger.

Vidal-Quadras, 78, was a long-time member of Spain’s conservative Popular Party, its regional leader in Catalonia, and a European Parliament member before leaving after three decades when he fell out with then-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

After he broke away, he helped found the far-right Vox party. He left Vox shortly after a failed attempt to win a European lawmaker seat in 2014.

Police are investigating the shooting and have yet to make any arrests.

“Thank God it seems that Alejandro Vidal-Quadras is out of danger,” Vox President Santiago Abascal said.

Popular Party President Alberto Núñez Feijóo deplored the shooting and wished for his recovery. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his concern on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“All my warmth at this moment (is) for him and his family,” Sánchez said.

Vidal-Quadras served as a vice president for the European Parliament and took a heavy interest in foreign affairs, participating in the legislature’s delegations to the former Soviet republics Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

He has not been active in politics for several years but has maintained a public role as a media commentator and columnist. There have been no immediate reports that the attack could have a political motivation.
