Writing in 2022
😳😳😳 Well well well, there’s basically one thing I wrote in 2022...
* Pictured: These Side Characters Have More Important Things To Do, Cannon Fodder Omega Goes On A Date With The Protagonist Omega!, Five times Kian was oblivious and one time he wasn’t (a holiday miracle!), Golden Gaytimes (BL Anthology).
Now for some random points!
This year, I wrote 274k words, which is less than last year’s 339k.
This is because I got a new job in 2022 that has a lot more work!
I overwhelmingly wrote original fic
This was overwhelmingly These Side Characters Have More Important Things To Do
(I spent over 388 hours! That’s like an hour a day, or a full day’s work per week!).
(This story is going to become the longest thing I’ve ever written...)
Writing events:
BL Palace Summer Anthology
Kinktober at the Daily Eggplant
BL Palace Secret Santa
I wrote fanfic for various English BL webnovels ^_^
I wrote on almost every day of the year, so that’s nice!
Overall, it has been a slight challenge to write (and post two chapters a week) along with my new job, let’s see if I can procrastinate less in 2023 🤣 I have so many ideas for different stories I could write next!
(see my 2021 summary here!)

2020 fic roundup
Buffyverse
there are days we live as if death were nowhere (in the background)
We Don’t Have These Memories (but one day we will)
Room in This House
MCU
(In Our Togetherness) Castles Are Built
things left behind and the things that are ahead
Prototypes, Pekingese, and Other Things That Might Test Your Patience
Taking Care
Games We Play
The Shops on Shield Street
No Place Like
to seek a newer world
to fill with joy the warrior's heart
Fake It, Make It
Fateful Friends
1. Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?:
I avoid predictions so I don’t feel let down by how much I end up doing, but I was definitely really surprised when was scrolling down my AO3 page how far down I scrolled before I hit 2019. Plus, I know this was approximately 3000 years ago, but I wrote pretty much a chapter a week of things left behind for the first four months of the year which is WILD for me.
2. What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?:
Lol, nothing. Stuck to pretty much familiar paths. Well, I guess I dipped into a Bucky pairing, which I probably wouldn’t have done without being prompted to it.
3. What’s your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I am wildly, unutterably proud of finishing things left behind, and of the whole project in general. More than anything I’ve ever written, it makes me think that I could someday actually write a book of my own with original characters and a world and the whole deal. But the story I revisit the most often is probably a tie between The Shops on Shield Street and Prototypes.
4. Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
It wasn’t really a risk (if anything, it echoed something I played with in Love’s Truest Language, a Buffyverse fic I wrote over a decade ago), but I tried playing with format in to seek a newer world, keeping each section to exactly 500 words and moving backward in time. I think the latter worked somewhat well, but the former did not, and I think it might have even hamstrung the more successful present-to-past element. For example, I was able to include a couple references in earlier sections that would eventually be explicated by the later ones to give that aha moment to the reader, but with more latitude I could have included more to allow more of a payoff. Still, I’m so annoyingly wordy sometimes that it doesn’t hurt to constrain myself a bit and remind myself that I don’t need every adjective I want to put in.
5. Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Last time around I said expanding into a new fandom and maybe at least starting something original. Both of those goals still feel interesting and relevant to me, but overall (some strong “in these uncertain times” energy here) I just want to keep writing something and not to force it, to write as much as I can while still enjoying the creative process.
6. From my past year of writing, what was…
Story Most Underappreciated by the Universe:
I’m the worlds biggest review hoarder and kudos tracker and stats comparer, but even I can’t really complain about anything in particular - people are so lovely and have been so generous with their words. (I mean, I could complain, but that would be mean-spirited of me.) Even the very late 2020 additions have been welcomed super nicely, and the ones that are a bit lower on the ladder like to seek a newer world deserve it. (If anything, I’m super confused by how readily some were received - No Place Like and Games We Play are almost inexplicably popular to me!)
Most Fun:
Prototypes - no surprise that it’s one of the ones I revisit most often. Also, really no shade to No Place Like - I think the tone does come off pretty snappy and light. In terms of enjoyment of the writing process, probably The Shops on Shield Street (this girl loves a good AU), or Room in This House (this girl loves writing a bratty kid).
Most Disappointing:
Not to harp, and it really isn’t as terrible as all that, but to seek a newer world. I’m also not wild at how list-y (In Our Togetherness) Castles Are Built came out. The concept is really good and overall the story is fine, but the pace seems just a touch more pallid than I’d like. (Ditto with the later part of to fill with joy the warrior's heart.)
The real answer, though, is my titles in general! I remain unhappy with a bunch of them.
Most Sexy:
Good luck finding anything!! Is it the chaste and canonical references to kissing in We Don’t Have These Memories? Is it Peggy kissing Steve’s knuckles from their separate twin beds in Fake It, Make It? Phew, hope I don’t get kicked off AO3 for being too spicy!
Hardest to Write:
I actually struggled pretty hard writing my Steggy Secret Santa fics for this year - I was really glad that I started early! Actually, tbh, I wrote quite a bit despite not necessarily feeling a strong spark of inspiration.
Most Unintentionally Telling:
Everything I write sort of is. There’s a lot of romance and happy endings and communication, things I want but am not great at.
Choice Lines:
Usually I’m obsessed enough with my own work to list fourteen million, but this time the prospect legit exhausts me. Pick your own if you’d like, I guess?
Well, I will leave you with this one, Steve being unintentionally prophetic in chapter 30 of things left behind, the first thing I posted in 2020:
"It's just—" and his voice shakes. He does not say that it is all harder than expected, that he isn’t certain he is up to the challenge. Instead, words nearly breaking, he tells her, "This has just been a really shitty year, you know."
So here’s to something good happening in 2021!

AO3 Search Tutorial
Please send us an ask stating which group ask and which person you are replying to. Thank you so much in advance!

Hi! I already had searched into the resources of the library and AO3, with multiple combination of tags, and I couldn't find this fic. Modern!Steve was a sex worker that worked from his apartment and most of the fic is them in apartment, i think they text as well, towards the middle/ ending of the story bucky(winter soldier/veteran) asked steve out, and asked help from steve's friends(maybe sam) to make the date more special. i think he ended up buying himself new clothes, and flowers for steve.
Anon 2 said:
hi I'm looking for a misplaced fic about bucky relearning about sex. I remember him doing research and sending porn videos to pepper and then steve says they have to wait 3 months before they have sex. Would love it if anyone can help out!

(i tried sending this earlier but it glitched so i’ll try again) i’m tryna find a stucky fic (obvi) where the avengers catch bucky and have him locked in tony’s vacation house. they call steve to come calm bucky down because buck won’t let bruce check his bullet wound. (steve has been going through real bad mental stuff.) the only orher part i remember is that bucky cuts out a tracker in his rib because he doesn’t want anyone to touch him, and he also sews it up by himself. it’s a cute fic, help

I was wondering if you guys knew the endgame Stucky fix it fic where Steve decided to stay behind but realizes that he’s in love with Bucky while he’s with Peggy and watches as Bucky falls in love with someone else (who dies later on) and regrets not being with him. Thank you!
Anon 5 said:
Hi! I am desperate to find a fic I originally found here and lost. I remember 2 scenes but can’t remember anything from the description. It was post TWS. Sam and Steve trying to find Bucky. At one point they caught up to him and they were surrounded by people trying to get Buck and he asked Steve to shoot him if they grabbed him and at a later scene Bucky pointed a gun at Sam so they wouldn’t take him to a hospital then turned it on himself to make Steve comply. Does that sound familiar at all?
Anon 6 said:
Hi! It’s like 2am and I’ve read this fuc twice before so I know it’s exists. It’s super short and it’s Nat’s perspective and her wanting to throw a Christmas party so they do and there’s minimal Stucky and Clintasha and they mention Thor being Santa Claus. I’ve been looking everywhere but I don’t know why I can’t find it. Thank you so much in advance.

There's this story I've been looking for when Bucky was in a band with Nat, Nat's husband/boyfriend(?), and Clint. And Bucky lost his arm after dropping a speaker or something when Nat's husband has a heart attack or something and dies? I know it's a very vague description, sorry

Hi~ I've tried all the ways I can think of to look for this fic.. As far as I remember, Steve is an omega and Bucky is an alpha (but he can't remember it bc he's brainwashed) Steve suspects someone has been rummaging on his apartment bc of misplaced papers until one day he sees Bucky in his window. Steve's like.. How are you alive are you ok?? But when he makes sudden movements he leaves. They are like that until Bucky is sitting on his couch and then his heat hits. Thank you so much beforehand

Hello! Please help me find the fic where Steve wakes up one day looking for Bucky (Established Relationship) and all the other Avengers cant remember Bucky at all and its because someone who was wronged by the Winter Solider went back in time and killed him before Steve found him in the 21st century. Thanks so much for all you do!

I've been looking for a shrunkyclunks fic but can't seem to find it anywhere. Buckyhas some kind of respitory issue from his military days and works restoring books and things. Antiques? Steve is Captain America, and they meet during/soon after the events of the first Avengers movie. Bucky has to wear a special mask to filter dust, and Stark eventually makes him new ones that do the same thing, but better. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, I'm looking for this one fic that I read a long time ago, it's one where the avengers think Steve is being abused by Bucky and start acting strange around them, but Steve and Bucky think they found out their kinks or something like that. The main thing I remember from it is that there was no actual abuse in the fic, just misunderstandings

Maybe you guys could help me-- I remember a fic where Bucky was a siren and Steve was a human (later he shows up as a mermaid with no memory of Bucky) and he told Bucky that he shouldn't be ashamed of himself because "Mother Nature cares about him enough to give him the tools he needs to survive" or something like that. Thanks in advance for the help! I appreciate all the things your team does for the fandom! :)
Anon 13 said:
This is really vague but it's literally all I can remember, so if you can't find it it's totally fine. All that I can remember is that for some reason Bucky had to leave at Steve's house, (maybe he worked there? Idk) who is like super rich? Maybe he does something illegal? And like at the beginning Steve is kind of detached and cold towards Bucky so it takes a while for them to start a relationship. Natasha is there? This is the most vague shit ever, I'm sorry, but I can't get it out of my head

How you even get people interested your fics, asking for a friend thanks
Aw, man, isn’t that a question for the ages?
So I’m gonna preface this by saying that there’s no magic quick-fix to attract more readers (however much we all wish there were.) Writing for the big ships or posting a fic featuring a popular trope/AU when it’s popular is going to get you more readers than writing niche fics, but chasing trends isn’t going to make you happy and it might even hurt the quality of your work. When you post and whether there was some big fandom or IRL event that drew attention away from the newly published pages (or flooded them, burying your fic under ten pages of Klance week ficlets or whatever) can also play a big role.
Secondly, and I know you’re probably not going to like hearing this, try not to worry too much about numbers like hits/kudos/bookmarks/reviews. They don’t mean as much as you think, and they aren’t a reflection on your skill as a writer or the value of your story. The best thing to do is to find some other way to measure success–maybe it’s how many words you’ve written, maybe it’s whether you stick to a consistent update schedule. Maybe it’s reaching that scene you’ve been dying to write for forever. But make sure it’s something that’s in your control, because depending on the faceless masses for validation sucks, and you deserve better.
Okay, on to some advice for attracting readers.
1. Rework your summary. Confession time: I hate writing summaries. Hate it. I’m already not good with short form and trying to sum up a story in a hundred words or less is even worse. But it’s one of the most important skills for a writer to learn, since it’s your one shot to get people interested enough to click that link. If you’re stuck, here are some suggestions, with examples of how I’ve used them for my own stories.
Pick a (short!) excerpt from your piece. Maybe a brief exchange of dialogue, maybe the opening line, maybe something else. It should be something that doesn’t require context to understand and that makes people want to find out what happens next (or what led up to this moment.) Example:
This psychic—Lance the Lucid, according to the posters, and Keith wasn’t even going to comment on that—was a charlatan, plain and simple, and Keith kind of wanted to punch him. Sure, Lance knew how to put on a show, but Keith doubted there was anything more to the act than charm and dramatic flair.
Pidge sighed, catching Keith’s eyes. “At this point, they’re pretty much our only hope.”
If you’re writing an AU, especially a canon divergence AU, put the focus on what you’re changing. Example:
Shiro used to dream of Earth. That was before the Arena, before Haggar, before he joined the Galra army. At least he has an ally, a Galra officer named Keith. Together they plan to bring down Zarkon’s empire from the inside.
Matt never thought he’d see his family again. Then he crash-lands on Earth and Pidge rescues him from Garrison custody. But his homecoming is short-lived. Now the Holt siblings, along with Lance and Hunk, must find the Voltron lions and free the universe from Galra control.
Or: Galra!Keith, double agent!Shiro, red paladin!Matt, black paladin!Allura, full series AU.
If you’re writing something tropey, or a twist on a cliche, maybe highlight that. Example:
[following a short description of plot] Canonverse Soulmate AU with romantic and platonic soulmates (and some gray areas in between)
Sometimes the simplest thing to do, especially for shorter stories, is to do a one-two punch in your summary. The set-up and the punchline. The scenario and the twist. The status quo and the catastrophe. Think “Long ago, the four nations lived in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.” Or better yet, the next part of that intro–defining the Avatar and then hitting us with “and then he vanished for a hundred years whoops.” Whatever you do, keep it short. Example:
When Keith was seven years old, he spent a year in La Quinta with a boy named Lance, the best friend he ever had. Ten years later, Lance and Keith reunite at the Garrison–only Keith doesn’t remember who Lance is.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that shorter is (usually) better, but you want to include enough to hook readers’ attention. It’s hard, I know, but keep working at it and it’ll get easier. Seriously–write five completely different summaries for your fic, all under 100 words. Give yourself a 5 or 10 minute limit for each so you don’t agonize too much. Set them aside for a while, then come back and see what works. Or write a list of all the things you’re most excited about in a given piece, cut out any major spoilers, and try to work one or two of the others into your summary.
2. Be strategic about your tags. If you’re posting on AO3, use tags people are going to search. Angst, hurt/comfort, fluff, any tropes that feature prominently, any relationships (especially gen ones) that are a major focus. Be wary of overtagging–Shatt shippers, for example, know all too well how common it is to search for Shatt and turn up only Klance fics with a passing mention of Shiro and Matt going on a date. But plenty of people search for specific tags in trying to find new stories. Use that.
Similarly, if you post on Tumblr, use your tags efficiently. The first five tags on a post are the ones that the post will show up in (i.e. if you have a tag tracker or go to tumblr.com/tagged/____) Tumblr’s search looks at the first twenty tags, I believe. So use your first five tags for either the most popular or the most niche aspects of your fic. (i.e. tagging it “klance” will have a larger potential audience, though it’ll get buried pretty quickly; tagging “matt holt” or “shatt” gives you a much smaller potential audience, but one that’s more starved for content so will probably click your link at a higher rate.) Prioritize, and leave your organization tags/tag commentary for after.
3. Your first chapter should pack a punch. This one may be a little harder to put into practice if you have an existing fic you’re trying to drum up interest in, but it’s worth keeping in mind. If your summary and tags get people through the door, your first chapter (in a multichapter fic)/your first few paragraphs (for any fic) is where people decide whether or not this is worth reading. Goals to strive for:
Your first line, or at most your first paragraph, should hook reader’s interest. It should ask an implicit question–what’s happening? How did we get here?
(the equivalent of) Your first page (a couple hundred words, tops) should establish the situation and forward momentum. Diving straight into action with no context can be confusing, but lingering too long on exposition can make people tune out before they get to the good part. I’ve heard it said that the first 250 words should establish three things: character, context, and motive. Who are we focused on, what’s happening right now, and why does it matter? There are exceptions to every rule, of course, but make sure you know why you’re deviating if you decide to do so.
Your first chapter (assuming you have more than one) should leave people wanting more. Don’t leave them in the middle of the set-up, or they may not be motivated to continue. But don’t give them everything they need to see where this is going, or they won’t bother waiting to find out.
**Update: There’s now a follow-up post talking a little bit more about how to start a story, with examples!**
4. Persistence is key. Out of all the advice I can give you, this one’s going to be the hardest to follow, I’m sure. It can feel like you’re throwing words at a void and getting nothing back. Sometimes you have a real slow start. Sometimes you’re writing self-induldgent rarepare stuff, and it seems like you and two other people are the only ones who ship it–and those other two never comment.
The thing is, writing fic (especially as a newcomer or writing niche fic) is like playing Marco Polo at a death metal concert. Not only are you shouting into a sea of noise, but you’re also trying to find the relative handful of people who are going to answer. But here’s the thing: if you yell “Marco” once and get no response, then go home, you’ll never find those other people. If you keep yelling–maybe stay in one spot and yell over and over, maybe wander around calling out every so often–you’ll find someone, and then you’ll find someone else, and then maybe someone else will start shouting with you and find three more people. It starts slow, but it builds momentum.
In terms of fic, though, what does that mean? It means keep writing. Maybe keep hammering away at this one fic–excellent if it’s something you’re excited about, something you need to write no matter what. You keep putting it out there and you’ll start to beat back the wave of random chance that conspires to bury your fic because of weird posting times or an onslaught from a fandom event.
Maybe write a bunch of shorter fics, participate in bangs and exchanges and other events. You might hook readers with your Klance soulmate AU that you did for a secret santa, then tempt them into trying your other stuff (true story.) You might make friends by chatting in a big bang’s discord, and they can help you write more attention-grabbing summaries, or can signal boost on Tumblr. (Or just be that one person who stans your writing and keeps you motivated through low hit counts on AO3.) Or you might just hit a whole bunch of people’s rarepair/nich buttons and start building a following that way.
Or maybe it means going a little more off the rails. Try a different fandom. Write original fiction. Write an 80k Marauders-at-Hogwarts fic for yourself, edit it, and only then start posting a chapter a week so you can grow your reader base without the low number of comments chipping away at your motivation because joke’s on you, hit counter. I already have the next chapter done. And the one after that, and all of them, so they’re still coming even if no one’s reading. ha-ha! (Also a true story.)
Look, the point is, building a reader base is hard, and it’s frustrating, and a lot if it is based on luck and fandom trends, and you’re always going to want to get caught up in the numbers. Even once you have readers, you might get frustrated because the tropey shipfic with a shoddy plot that you BS’d your way through has ten times as much love as the lovingly crafted, well-plotted AU that you’ve poured literally thousands of hours into. Because writers are all starved for feedback, and with the exception of people lucky enough (or unlucky enough) to hit a fandom sweet spot and get shot straight into the realms of That One Fic Everyone Knows About–with the exception of those freak accidents of fate, the people who have sizable followings are almost always people who just plain love to write and do it regardless of what anyone else says or does.
So don’t write for the readers. Write for yourself first, and love what you write. Write stories that need to be told. Stories you can’t bear not to tell–because when you care that much about a story, it shows, and when the right people find your story, they’re going to love that you love it. Trust me. The right people are out there. You just have to keep shouting until you find them.

Secret Santa Gift
Here is my @onceuponafestivegifting gift to @lanasfeather!! I hope you had a wonderful holiday period, and that 2018 will be a good year ahead for you.
This is a Hooked Queen story (Regina/Rogers|Hook), with some Regal Believer as always, and a few mentions of Snow and Charming where I could fit it in, considering the setting ^^  I’ve never written Rogers version of Hook before, so I hope I’ve done his character justice for you.
Each Day You’re Still Here
There is a very touching farewell going on between his other self, Emma and Henry. Hook feels his stomach clench as he watches the hugs and murmured words. Terrible memories are pushing to the forefront of his mind - screams of ‘Papa!’, of soul-crushing defeat as his daughter is ripped from his arms, the look on her face the last time he saw her. They are memories he wants to forget as much as he wants to grasp on tightly. Any memory of his daughter brings some small comfort.
Henry may be all grown up, but the lad is still clearly lost and hunting for his place in this world, his own story and happy ending. Hook cannot imagine being realms away from his child instead of witnessing it all unfold first hand – not if there was a choice. But then, perhaps he is projecting heavily onto the situation. Henry is not his child, and these people all have different histories and relationships with each other.
He turns his back on the farewells, and tries not to feel bitter about any of it. In his distraction, it takes him a moment to realize he’s come face-to-face with Regina instead.
She had arrived back at the clearing with Henry earlier, announcing loudly to the world that she was staying too. She looks so similar to the Evil Queen he remembers, but acts very differently. It is clear she is no longer the revenged-crazed woman from his own realm, and yet in some ways, he is more wary of this version. A similarity they DO share, however, is the flair for dramatics – something this Regina had capitalized on as she had stood, hands on hips, and declaring that she was going to help her son on ‘Operation Next Chapter’.
Now, she merely quirks her eyebrow at him, as he stubbornly refuses to turn back around for the farewells. ‘Too many sentiments,’ he whispers at her, feigning a look of disgust. She releases one indelicate snort, before primly turning her attention back to her son, not a word spoken.
In fact, they don’t speak again until the portal has closed and Henry trudges back to them, forlornly.
‘Seeing them leave just makes me miss everyone back home,’ he confesses, and Hook watches as he slings an arm around his mother’s shoulders. She is tiny in comparison.
‘They all miss you too,’ she says, smiling up. ‘Snow and Charming especially. But they’re also very proud of you.’
‘They don’t even know what the lad’s been up to,’ Hook feels the need to interject childishly. Regina shoots him an exasperated look, and he sends her a serene smirk back.
‘Nevertheless, they certainly know what your original plans were, and they’re going to hear all about what you’ve been doing when the others see them again,’ she continues, ignoring his behaviour. ‘Now, let me change out of this suit and into something a bit more forest-appropriate, and then we’ll find your Cinderella.’
Much later, after a magical wardrobe change, several hours of hiking through the trees, and excited introductions with the resistance camp, Hook finds himself wandering through the maze of tents, enjoying the darkness and the peace that comes with it.
A flash of light catches his eyes, coming from beyond the protection of the camp. Someone has wandered further into the forest, and he doesn’t need to have known her long to take a guess as to whom it might be.
‘A little bit dangerous to be out here alone, is it not, Your Majesty?’ he calls out softly, keeping his voice low so as to avoid disturbing the rest of the camp. She is standing with her back resting against a tree, and as he comes closer, he can see the light is coming from a fireball she skilfully flicks from hand to hand.
‘It’s just Regina,’ she tells him, but her attention is fixated on the fire, her expression serious. He hesitates for a moment, uncertain whether he should just leave her alone. He’s never been one to avoid difficult conversations, however, so he settles himself against the tree also, close enough that their shoulders brush just once.
‘Well, Regina,’ he tries again, ‘Why are you being all brooding, alone and an easy target for whatever lurks in these woods after dark?’
The fireball stops darting around her fingers, and stills, suspended in mid-air. Abruptly, the light goes out, and darkness falls until his eyes adjust to the dimness of the evening now that the far-off campfires and the moon are the only things still shining.
‘Don’t act like we’re friends,’ Regina snaps suddenly. ‘The other version of you was tiresome enough, but we don’t even know each other.’
‘I knew you,’ he blurts out. He’s not sure what he’s trying to prove. ‘I mean, not YOU-you, but the version of you that lived in my realm.’
This catches her attention, and for the first time that evening, they make eye contact.
‘You knew the Evil Queen from the wish realm?’ she repeats. ‘I thought Snow and Charming defeated her long ago.’
He shrugs, trying to appear nonchalant under her scrutiny.
‘Well sure, but that doesn’t mean they actually managed to catch her. Took her magic, so she fled, and came to me to make another deal.’
Regina is silent, but he can hear the unasked questions anyway.
‘She gave me information I thought I needed,’ he continues, waving his hand vaguely. ‘And in return, I agreed to give her passage on the Jolly Roger away from that land and to one where she wouldn’t have to deal with Snow White anymore.’
‘And did you?’ Regina interjects. ‘Give her passage, I mean? Where did she decide to go?’
He feels a slight pressure on his shoulder again, and realizes she’s relaxed back further against the tree.
‘Well, yes and no,’ he admits. ‘She got a position on the ship, but it wasn’t with me at the helm. Left Smee as Captain, but it didn’t take long for stories to spread about a new Pirate Queen. Seems my men and your other self hit it off quite well. Who knew an Evil Queen could make such a good pirate, eh?’
‘We do always find a way to survive,’ Regina murmurs. She tilts her head back and sideways slightly, so they can look at each other properly. ‘And you? Why didn’t you go with them?’
His voice catches in his throat for a moment. He’s already had to talk about Alice too much recently – it hurts enough that he wants to ignore her question. But she waits patiently, eyes expectant.
‘My daughter,’ he chokes out eventually. ‘I had a baby daughter and I decided to stay with her.’
Regina drops her gaze again, but nods.
‘I was actually thinking about you earlier,’ she announces, and it is such an abrupt change of subject, and the tone of this entire conversation has been so strange, that Hook cannot even muster up a leering response to her words.
‘Oh?’ he says instead, hoping to sound confident and disinterested at the same time.
‘When I was in your realm, I was so sure it had just been created by a wish,’ she continues, and her shoulders are once more hunched over slightly. ‘I assumed it was all a figment of Emma’s wish and desire, and none of it was real. I did something terrible there, because I wasn’t thinking about the consequences. And now you’re here, reminding me that the people where you come from all had lives and histories and families.’
Hook doesn’t even know what to say to her confession – all the words that spring to mind seem wrong.
‘Her name is Alice,’ he finally says, and then it is as if he can’t stop talking about her. He explains how he found raised his daughter, what she looks like, her favourite book, her favourite games to play, her favourite star constellations…Anything and everything he can think of. For once, the pain for his daughter is dulled, and he can linger on the happier memories. Regina doesn’t say much, but she listens all the same, her shoulder pressed against his.
As time marches on, they become reluctant friends.
Of course, Regina is still rather snarky towards him, and thinks of at least one creative insult a day to call him, but they work well together in a team when figuring out how to go about fighting the evils of this world.
Some days, Hook gazes around and marvels at the number of people who seem to like having him as part of the camp. His men on board the Jolly Roger had worked well under his command, but there is a certain comradery he feels amongst these people that he couldn’t achieve when being called ‘sir’.
Other days, the camp is too loud and full of people. He has to escape it all, to find somewhere dark and quiet, and think back to his tower and home, where his daughter grew up. It had been him and Alice against the world, and he had lost his way after that, sinking into the bottle and despair. The happiness he feels surrounded by these people stirs up feelings of guilt, which gnaws away inside. He shouldn’t feel happy, not while his daughter still needs saving.
Coincidentally, Regina always manages to find him when he’s in one of these moods, and each time has a ridiculous task that he MUST do right at that moment, and no, it cannot wait.
‘Do you have a tracker on me or something?’ he asks irritably one day, not wanting to admit he had been a few steps away from packing a bag and fleeing from everyone. Regina gives him a sideways glance, but doesn’t pause in her long explanation of a certain chore that apparently can only be done by him, despite both of them being well aware that there are plenty of men in the camp who would be happy to help Regina out.
Regina herself seems to have decided that her role is to be everywhere all at once. If she isn’t with him and Tiana, discussing strategies for defending the camp or ways to fight back, then he can find her helping with the cooking, or discussing animal care with some of the farmers, or healing broken clothes and broken bones with her magic, or trying to give advice to the young people who are brave enough to sidle up to her and start a conversation. Hook feels tired just watching it all; it seems any way his head turns, she is there doing some task.
Until one day she isn’t.
He is in the middle of a morning sword practice with a couple of young men, when the clash of metal is drowned out by Henry’s call.
‘Killian!’
‘Halt, halt,’ Hook orders, dropping his guard once his opponent complies. The name still sounds strange to his ears – he has been either ‘papa’ or ‘Hook’ for a long time now. ‘No need to shout, Henry. What’s the matter?’
Henry not-so-subtly gestures for him to come closer.
‘I can’t find Mom,’ he says softly, as soon as they’ve walked far enough away from the curious onlookers. ‘She said she was going to find some herbs to help Charlotte’s illness, but that was several hours ago, and she hasn’t returned to camp.’
Hook rests a reassuring hand on Henry’s arm.
‘Your mother is very good at looking after herself,’ he says, even as he can feel his stomach drop. ‘But tell you what – why don’t we go ask Tiana and Ella to help us scout around. And whoever finds Regina can order her ass back to camp.’
Henry smiles weakly at this, but nods, before striding away to speak to Tiana. Hook takes a moment to ponder his options, and then heads out into the forest. He had seen Regina early that morning – before the sun had even risen. Unable to sleep, he was busy trying to get the fire to relight so they could have an early start on breakfast, when she had slipped by him in the darkness.
‘Are you sure that’s wise?’ he had called out, watching as she aimed towards a dense patch of trees.
‘I’m pretty sure my magic will keep me better protected than your sword would,’ she had shot back, and then was gone.
Now he walks in the same direction, hoping to find her engrossed in herb picking, or whatever silly task had enticed her away. Instead, after twenty minutes of searching, he stumbles across a clearing with several bodies strewn about. His heart begins to beat slightly faster, even as he realizes that the bodies are all men – no doubt forest bandits looking for an easy target to rob.
‘If you’re here to say I told you so, I will take your hook and gut you with it,’ a voice snarls, and he spins around to see Regina, hunched on the ground by a tree. Her arms are wrapped around her middle, and he can see her breathing is laboured.
‘Wouldn’t dream of it, love,’ he assures her. ‘You a bit out of practice with the whole fighting thing? Seem a bit out of breath.’
He tries to keep his voice carefree as he nears, but can’t stop a frown from darkening his face when he sees her grimace.
‘Not so much out of practice as careless,’ she pushes out, and stretches to grasp his wrist and stagger upright. As soon as she is on her feet, her face drains of any remaining colour, and she sways suddenly.
‘Damn, I guess he got me better than I expected,’ she mutters, still clinging on to his arm, and Hook realizes her fingers have red smeared on them. He glances down quickly, hand going automatically to press against the wound in her side.
‘We need to get you back to camp, now,’ he tells her, feeling the warmth of her blood.
‘You aren’t going to carry me like a damsel in distress,’ she snaps back, and her bad mood makes him feel slightly better. A quiet Regina in this situation would be a worse sign.
They begin the slow limp back, and just as Hook is steering her towards her tent, Henry bursts onto the scene.
‘MOM!’ he yells, skidding to a halt beside them. ‘What happened? Are you OK? Is that BLOOD?’
‘Henry,’ Hook interrupts. ‘I need you to go find Mary and get her to come and help.’
Henry takes off again at a sprint, and a whirlwind ten minutes later, both men find themselves banned from Regina’s tent whilst Mary and her nurses take charge.
‘I should have gone with her,’ Hook mutters, looking down at his now-bloodied hands. Henry is pacing up and down, but pauses at this.
‘I’m pretty sure she would have taken that as an insult,’ he says, a very small smile on his lips. ‘Perhaps we need to implement a buddy system though…y’know, make everyone go around in pairs at least.’
‘I imagine your mother would still think herself too scary to need a buddy,’ Hook frowns, crossing his arms. ‘Bloody stubborn woman, that one.’
‘Yeah, she is,’ Henry agrees, and Hook can hear the love shining out of those words.
When they are finally allowed back in the tent, Regina is asleep.
‘And don’t you disturb her,’ Mary threatens darkly, as she sweeps by them. Henry races to sit by his mother’s side, and Hook ignores the reasons why he decides to wander in and settle himself on Regina’s other side. They sit there for the rest of the night, talking about random subjects before first one and then the other finally succumbs to sleep.
The next morning, Regina is awake and irritable, announcing to the world that she is FINE, thankyouverymuch. Not even Mary’s glowering can stop her from attempting to swing her legs out of bed and get up.
‘I told you she was bloody stubborn!’ Hook accuses Henry.
‘Excuse me!’ Regina has to jump in. ‘I am not stubborn, I am just fine and not wanting to waste my day being coddled.’
Hook snorts in disbelief, so she follows this up with a suggestion about exactly where he can put his hook, prompting Henry to say ‘Mom’ in a very scandalized tone.
It takes her son’s puppy eyes and sad pleading to persuade Regina to stay in bed one more day.
‘I’ll get us some breakfast,’ Henry announces, and bounds away, triumphant in his win. Hook turns to follow.
‘Hey,’ Regina says softly once they are alone. ‘I guess…thanks. For helping me.’
She smiles at him then, and it is tired but also bright. He finds himself smiling back, suddenly reluctant to go. They stare at each other for a few moments, and then he shrugs.
‘I have cards,’ he says, rummaging around in the bottom of his coat’s pocket. ‘The boys and I were going to play a game after sword practice, but then I was distracted by someone’s drama.’
Regina sits further upright in bed, face barely betraying the pain she’s in.
‘Bring it on,’ she demands, and when Henry arrives back, carefully balancing three bowls, they are already embroiled in a highly competitive game.
Lucy is born, and Drizella is turned to stone. Life falls into a pleasant routine.
Alice is still never far from his mind, but she is alive and building her own happiness, and he can take comfort in that, even if he still cannot hug his own daughter.
Sometimes life is almost too boring, and he can tell Regina feels the same. On days like this, he steals her away from the others, telling her to change out of whatever ridiculous dress she is wearing so they can go on a proper adventure. They ride out in a different direction each time, and discussions inevitably turn to comparing realms and the differences between.
Alas, the adventures rarely end with any good fights, but just the act of searching for danger can give them energy. Occasionally, Regina will let loose with her fireballs, and he’ll practice dodging them. Inevitably some poor unsuspecting tree will burn down. There is a chaotic and destructive element inside Regina, no matter how much of a hero she now is, and it has taken him this long to realize it is better for her to direct that outwards rather than inwards. He ignores the fact that he may have exactly the same destructive streak, and pointedly does not make eye contact when he feels Regina watching him with a knowing expression.
It is the late in the night before Lucy’s eight birthday, when Regina seeks him out, knocking quietly on the door. He had been unable to sleep himself, and it only takes a moment to open the door and allow her to slip inside.
‘What is it, love?’ he asks, watching her pace around his bedroom.
‘Something bad is going to happen,’ she replies, running a hand through her hair and making the curls stand up slightly. ‘I don’t know why, I just feel it.’
He grasps hold of her shoulders gently, and tugs her closer so they are standing face-to-face.
‘Drizella can’t enact anything against us tomorrow,’ he tells her, but instead of reassuring her, he can feel the dread start to seep into his own skin.
‘Life is too good right now,’ Regina whispers, and for once she doesn’t hide her fear. ‘It’s too peaceful, I’m too happy. Something is going to happen tomorrow.’
She sounds so convinced, he doesn’t know what he can say to change her mind. So instead, he steps forwards and pulls her into a hug. For all that they’ve now known each other for many years, they have never actually embraced. Regina stiffens for a moment, and then he feels the tension slowly drain out. Her arms wrap around his waist, as she tucks her head against his chest. They stand there until the sun begins to rise.
Rogers can clearly remember the first time he meets the proprietor of “Roni’s”. He is on duty, covering a late shift and bored out of his mind as he drinks the final dregs of a terrible coffee, when the door to the bar across the road from where his car is parked bursts open and a man stumbles out.
‘If you come back again, I’ll get my bat,’ a voice yells at the man, and Rogers sees a small woman come storming out of the bar, staring after the drunk man.
‘She was always good at the dramatic entrances,’ he thinks, and it is such a strange thought about a woman he has never met before, that he pushes it out of his mind immediately.
He climbs out of his car instead, jerking a thumb in the direction the creep went.
‘This guy being a problem?’ he asks, crossing the road. The woman places her hands on her hips, glaring angrily at the world.
‘Not to me, but he tried it on with one of my employees,’ she grumbles. ‘I don’t think he’ll come back though, if he knows what’s good for him. I do have a reputation around here, after all.’
‘A reputation for beating people with bats?’ he asks incredulously, unable to help his lips curling into a smile. Her frown smooths out, and then she beams up at him in response.
‘Only those who deserve it,’ she says cheerily, and then nods back towards the bar. ‘I best make sure they aren’t burning the place down in my absence. Thanks anyway!’
With a wink, she wanders back inside.
Rogers is almost tempted to go to the bar as a customer in the following days, just to see if he can run into the bartender again. He figures it may be a weird move on his part, however, and then work becomes so busy he has no time to think about ‘Roni’s’.
He finally manages to finish work on time several weeks later. An early evening at home beckons him, but he instead finds his feet leading him in the opposite direction, down the road and to the bar. Inside, it is fairly busy for a Thursday evening, and it takes him a few moments to reach the front of the queue.
‘Good evening!’ a familiar voice greets him. Roni herself is standing on the other side of the counter, and she smirks when his eyes widen at the sight of her. ‘I was wondering when you’d turn up. All the police officers end up here eventually.’
The crowd has thinned out enough that he can seat himself at the bar, and he leans over to allow himself to be heard.
‘Did that man ever try to return?’ he half-shouts over the music and buzz of chatter. Roni shakes her head proudly.
‘Guess my reputation with a bat precedes me,’ she says, quirking an eyebrow. ‘What’s your poison?’
He spends too many hours there – so much for an early night. But after that, he manages to find time to drop in once a week. The bar sells good drinks, that is all. It’s not just because he enjoys talking to Roni.
Those peaceful evenings are shattered the day he stands in front of Roni, and she warns him with a serious expression about his new partner.
‘I can take care of myself,’ he responds, although it isn’t clear if he’s trying to reassure her or himself. Weaver is not a man he feels like trusting right now.
‘Yeah, but listen. Weaver brings a lot of new partners in here, and not a lot of them come back,’ Roni presses.
Rogers has at this moment already fallen down the rabbit hole, but he doesn’t realize it, not yet. Not until he is firmly embroiled in conspiracies and intrigue, and Roni is his partner in crime over bear claws and coffee, and there is a young man with an awkward demeanour called Henry joining their fight, and a young woman with blonde hair who seems so familiar to him.
Rogers admires Roni’s fearlessness and determination in these battles.
‘We always did make a great team in strategizing,’ he thinks, and there are memories in his head of him and Regina – no, Roni, he doesn’t know a Regina, who is Regina? – and they are standing over a map and arguing with Sabine of all people about defences. They are strange thoughts, and he chases them away quickly.
One day, he wakes up as ordinary Detective Rogers. And then there is a fight with magic and witches, and everything Rogers believed about the world is a lie.
Roni has powers and her name is actually Regina, and she’s babbling on about poisoned hearts, and a curse and a cure, and instead of thinking about how crazy she is, Rogers thinks ‘well of course that’s Regina’.
He doesn’t dwell on the thought however, because Roni – Regina – is apparently about to go into battle against a group of witches, all alone except for a red-haired woman who also believes in magic. Rogers is still not entirely sure he believes in magic and curses, but when Roni pulls him aside for a private discussion, he goes willingly and ready to listen.
‘If…If something happens to me, please tell Henry I love him,’ she says in a rush. ‘And that it wasn’t his fault, and he deserves a happy ending.’
And it is strange, but Rogers knows instinctively she does not mean she is IN love with Henry, but something else. Just as he knows that Regina – Roni? – does not believe she is coming back from whatever this fight will entail.
‘I’ll tell him,’ he says, and just as she turns to leave, he catches hold of her wrist and pulls her back gently.
‘What are you doing?’ she asks, and this action more than going off for a fight to the death seems to unsettle her.
‘Regina,’ he says, and isn’t it strange that this name rolls off his tongue easily? ‘You deserve a happy ending too.’
Then he slides his hand into her hair, fingers tangled in the soft curls, and leans forward to kiss her.
‘I can’t,’ Regina whispers, and her voice cracks slightly as she pulls back. ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t risk the curse.’
She steps back, and they are both breathing heavily.
‘You’re a good man, Rogers,’ she says, and then she flees.
He hesitates only for a moment, and then swears loudly. Magic and witches or not, he is not allowing her to walk out of his life like that. His gun is heavy in his hand as he heads in the direction he thinks Regina went.
They had already been in a maze of abandoned industrial buildings, and it doesn’t take him long to register where the noise and flashes of lights are coming from – a large factory that had previously been very dark and empty. The door has been blasted in, and he slips through the entranceway and follows the corridors down.
‘Zelena!’ he hears Regina cry, turning a corner just in time to see the red-haired woman crash into the wall and slump to the floor. Regina is standing in the middle of the room, and a purple stormcloud surrounds her, crackling with sparks and untamed destructive power. She has never looked more beautiful to Rogers.
‘Oh, I do hope your dearest sister is alright,’ sneers another voice, and he registers suddenly that Regina is facing down an entire group of women.
‘Bring it,’ Regina snarls, and then she is fighting for her life as the other women surge forward. Rogers can barely keep track of her through the noise and light, and the fact that the women all seem to shift around the room without always…moving directly there.
Suddenly, Regina is flung to the ground, and she is screaming loudly even as she struggles to stand up. Rogers lifts his gun, takes aim, and manages to empty his clip before a pain worse than he’d ever felt before rips through him, and everything goes dark.
When he awakens a few hours later, he is no longer merely Detective Rogers. He is Rogers but he is also Hook – Killian Jones, that’s his actual name, no? That and maybe…
‘Papa!’ Alice cries, and he opens his eyes to see a hospital room, and in front of all the beeping machinery, his daughter. She leans down carefully, and he doesn’t even flinch because any pain in his heart would be worth having a hug from her. His arms wrap around her shoulders automatically, but there is no pain – only joy and Alice and he realizes abruptly that he is crying.
‘It doesn’t affect us in this world, Papa,’ Alice says softly, and she pulls back only in order to sit next to his bed and hold his hand. He falls asleep smiling, but with the faint itch in the back of his mind that he is forgetting something.
When he next awakens, it is Regina sat next to his bed.
‘Did I dream about Alice?’ he says, his voice rough but his brain functioning better this time. She shakes her head, reaching forwards with a cup of water that he sips greedily.
‘Robin arrived a short while ago,’ she says softly. ‘Alice thought you were asleep, so they’re taking some time together.’
He nods, slowly pulling himself upright so he can look Regina properly in the eyes.
‘Henry?’ he asks, remembering now exactly what Regina had been telling his cursed self. ‘Lucy?’
‘All fine,’ she reassures him. ‘Everyone is fine. I could barely escape that room to come check on you. But trust me, they’ll all be here later to say hello.’
‘You’re fine?’ he asks, and at this her hand reaches out and grasps his wrist. They’ve left his prosthetic hand off, and he understands, considering he’s in the hospital, but it makes him want to reach out with his other hand so that they can lace their fingers together. He waits instead.
‘I’m fine, thanks to you,’ she replies, but she drops her gaze. ‘Just – don’t do that again. I thought they’d killed you, and I…I couldn’t have done it again. Not again.’
‘What do you mean, not again?’ he demands, and he knows exactly what she’s trying to say, but still can’t actually believe it. Instead of an answer, she leans forwards, fingers tracing down his cheek to his jaw, and then they are finally kissing.
‘So,’ he begins casually. It is a week later, and he has finally been allowed to leave the hospital, although only under promise of supervision.
‘Get your mind out of the gutter,’ Regina snorts, pushing him down onto her bed. ‘You’re still a patient. Doctor’s orders.’
He waggles his eyebrows and grins charmingly up at her, but apparently Regina Mills is made of strong stuff, since she merely rolls her eyes and turns away, starting to re-arrange the rest of the room in order to fit a few of his belongings.
‘Actually, what I was going to say was: so, this is it? The curse is broken, to Storybrooke we go, big reunions, blah blah blah?’
Regina stops her tidying and perches on the edge of his (her) bed.
‘Well, I certainly want to visit Storybrooke,’ she agrees. ‘It’s been far too long since I’ve been able to speak to Snow and Charming especially. And they’ll want to come and visit here too, I hope. But…It’s no longer our home. Not really. Lucy, Ella and Tiana have never lived there. Zelena has gone back to San Francisco to try and make it work with her fiancée. Henry seems content to build a life with his family here.’
‘And you?’ he asks, biting his lip. She raises an eyebrow and peers down at him.
‘Well, I’d hope we’d stick around here too…It’s not like you’ve ever been to Storybrooke either. Although I can’t promise I’ll keep to Roni’s old clothes.’
‘A fair trade,’ he whispers, as she leans down for a kiss.
The End.

Christmas Eve at the Murphy-Becks
Here is my story for @dearevanhansensecretsanta 2017 for @ifyougiveagirlapencil!  This is probably one of the longest stories I’ve ever written and although I did struggle with bits of it sometimes, it’s been fun to write.  I also made a thing in Photoshop referring to part of the story (I’m terrible at artwork).  I hope you enjoy it and have a wonderful Christmas!
Tumblr media
Characters: Evan, Connor, Zoe, Alana and Jared
Original Characters: Lyra (Zoe and Alana’s daughter) - I don’t have a definite answer on who her dad is, but I was considered Evan as her dad at one point.
“Wake up, Uncle Connor!” an excited, high-pitched voice squeaked in a tall, long-haired boy’s ear.
“Yeah, wake up, Uncle Connor!” a bespectacled boy parroted the little girl.
“Shut up, Kleinman,” Connor retorted, rubbing his eyes to see his 3 year-old niece and his old college flatmate Jared Kleinman staring at him.  “Where’s Evan?”
“He’s in the kitchen with Mama Zoe,” said Lyra.  “We’ve been making gingerbread cookies for Santa.”
Connor stumbled into the kitchen where he found his little sister making cups of coffee for herself, Connor, Jared and Alana, as well as hot chocolates for Lyra and Evan – Zoe shuddered at the memory of once having to stay up trying to soothe Evan after he'd accidentally drunk too much coffee and was scared of throwing up the night before an exam in college – and his husband cleaning the dining table.
“Thank you,” Connor snatched one steaming mug of coffee from Zoe as he strolled past her and planted an affectionate kiss on Evan’s head.  “Hello, beautiful.”
“Hey!” Zoe called after him, exasperated.  “That was for Alana.”
“Well, it isn’t any more,” Connor turned and stuck his tongue out at Zoe.
“We’re going to be making cards for Santa in a minute if you want to join in?” Evan asked Connor, reaching up on tiptoes to kiss him back.
“Sure.  I’ll get the supplies and ask Alana to come downstairs too.” Connor swept Lyra into his arms and carried her upstairs to choose some stencils and stickers and find her ‘Mommy Lala’.
“According to NORAD Santa Tracker, Santa will arrive at around 3:20am.” Jared called out from the spot on the living room couch that Connor had vacated.
“I’m hoping my 3 year-old will have been in bed for a long time by then,” Zoe replied, “AND that you will have gone home.”
“Nah, I’m staying right here,” Jared stuck his tongue out, “it’s not a family Christmas without Fun Uncle Jared.  If I have anything to do with it, we’ll all still be sitting in here watching movies at 4am.”
Zoe sighed.  She did NOT want to be awake at 4am when her daughter would come bouncing into her room to wake her to open presents as early as six.
Connor returned with a big box of craft supplies in his arms, closely followed by Alana and Lyra. Connor set the box down on the living room floor and picked six blank cards out of the packet.  Heck, he thought, if we’re meant to be keeping up the charade that Santa is real, we’d better all be making our own Christmas cards to Santa like Lyra.
For the past few years after Lyra was born, Connor had made cards for Santa that depicted him and Evan using buttons from old shirts he’d grown out of, kissing under the mistletoe or doing other festive activities together.  This year, he decided to make a card that showed them ice-skating, even though they have never been to the local ice rink together because Evan is terrified of falling on the ice and breaking his arm again like when he was 17. Jared tapped on his smartphone’s screen, choosing a song to blast through the speakers he’d brought with him mostly to annoy Connor.
“Not this again,” Zoe complained as Last Christmas by Wham started playing.  “In the music video, the girl literally re-gifted a Christmas present from her ex-boyfriend to her new boyfriend.  Everybody knows that.”
“Well, what do you want?” Jared retorted.  “I’m fed up of your and Alana’s love of Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses.  That’s all you two ever listened to over Christmas during the last year of college.”
“Ooh, I love that song!” Connor chimed in.  Jared raised his eyebrows at him.  “What? Zoe played it so many times that it grew on me, eventually.”
“How about In The Bleak Midwinter?” asked Evan.
“I don’t mind that, but I don’t think I have it in my library,” Jared replied, scrolling through his phone.  “I could find it on YouTube and we could sing along, I suppose.”
“In the bleak mid-winter Frosty wind made moan; Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter Long ago.”
As they continued singing along, Alana helped her daughter to choose some stencils (a reindeer and a sleigh) and drew around them for her, before Lyra scribbled all over them with pink, red and green crayons.  Evan covered his card in black paper, then drew some trees with a silver pen and carefully glued on several tiny snowflake sequins that had been in the craft supply box since Connor and Zoe were little and had been making cards for Santa themselves.
“I found this paper chain kit in Target the other day,” Zoe announced, coming back into the living room with a packet full of different coloured paper-chain strips.  “You can have a go at this when you’re done with your cards and then put them on the tree.”
“Ooh, I haven’t made one of those in years,” Evan exclaimed, taking the packet from Zoe’s hand and opening it.  “Lyra, do you want to come and help me?”  He took a strip out, licked the end and formed the first circle to show his niece how to do it.  He took the next strip, threaded the end through the first circle, offered an end for Lyra to lick, and then stuck the two ends together to form a second circle.
“Are the cookies ready yet?” Jared asked, still scrolling through his phone.
“They’re on the cooling rack, but they haven’t been iced yet,” Zoe slumped onto the couch next to Alana. “And no, you can’t eat them yet.”
“They’re for Santa,” Lyra explained.
“But can I ice them?” Jared bargained.
“I don’t see why not,” Zoe gave in.  “It’s about time that you made yourself useful.  But you’re helping Lyra to ice them.  And you’re still not allowed to eat them.”
Jared scowled, but put his phone down, held Lyra’s hand and took her into the kitchen.
“Is there anything you need from the supermarket?” Connor asked.  “I couldn’t see any milk in the fridge or carrots for Rudolph in the cupboard. Evan and I can take the car to get anything else.”
“I forgot the cranberries for the sauce we’re making tomorrow,” Alana remembered, starting to list items on her fingers.  “We can have pizza for dinner tonight, so two or three pizzas please.  And some yoghurt dip and popcorn for later.”
“Got it,” Connor made a shopping list on his phone, before he and Evan put on their coats and boots and left the house.
 ***
“Where is Santa?” Lyra asked as Connor helped her to wash her hands after dinner.
“Santa won’t come until you’re fast asleep,” Connor reminded his niece.  “Your mama said that Santa will just go round and round in the sky in his sleigh waiting until you’re asleep.”
“Please can you and Uncle Evan read me one more bedtime story?” Lyra pleaded.  “Please.”
“Okay,” Connor sighed, drying both their hands and then carrying Lyra to her bedroom where Evan was waiting.  “ONE more story and then Mama Zoe and Mommy Lala will come to tuck you in.”
Evan had picked a picture book edition of A Visit from St. Nicholas from the bookshelf in the corner of Lyra’s bedroom. It had been his favourite Christmas story when he was a little boy and he had gifted the book to Lyra for her first Christmas.  Evan and Connor sat on each side of Lyra on her bed and began to read the story to her together while she looked at all the pictures.
“Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas would soon be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap – ”
Connor suddenly felt something heavy on his arm.  He looked down to find Lyra fast asleep with her head leaning against him.  He smiled and whispered to Evan to tiptoe downstairs to find Zoe and Alana so their could kiss their daughter “Goodnight”, before gently removing his arm from behind Lyra’s head and gently resting it on her pillow, slipping the picture book back into its place on the shelf and leaving the room as Zoe and Alana came in.
“Connor, we’re gonna need to borrow your boots,” Zoe told her brother once she and Alana were back downstairs after tucking Lyra up in bed.
“Why?” asked Connor.
“Alana thought it would be a cool idea to make some flour footprints in the kitchen to make it look more like Santa has been, and you have bigger feet than Jared and Evan.”
“Thanks,” Connor replied sarcastically, but willingly walked through the plain white flour that Alana had scattered on the kitchen floor near the back door.
Zoe brought a bag of presents wrapped in pink Disney Princess wrapping paper from the cloak cupboard into the living room and started stuffing them into Lyra’s stocking by the fireplace and under the Christmas tree for each of the friends.  Jared searched for the gifts with his name on the label and tried to guess what could be inside before Zoe scolded him and told him to wait until the morning.  Evan peeled and cut the carrots that had been left on the table for Rudolph and brought a bowl of carrot sticks and yoghurt dip into the living room to share.  Each of the five friends picked a cookie from the plate for Santa, leaving only a scattering of crumbs for Lyra to find in the morning, and Connor finished the milk.
“What movie are we watching?” Jared asked from his spot on the couch.  “I vote The Nightmare Before Christmas.”
“Me too,” Connor agreed.
“I’d like to watch Miracle on 34th Street,” Evan chimed in.
“Zoe and I usually watch The Holiday together after putting Lyra to bed on Christmas Eve,” Alana added.
“I’m down for that,” Jared changed his vote.
“The Holiday, it is,” Zoe picked the DVD from the cabinet next to the 40-inch flat-screen television.
“Or we could watch Miracle on 34th Street, then you three can watch The Holiday after Evan and I have gone to bed?” Connor interrupted.
Zoe glanced at Alana and Jared for approval, knowing that they would be awake for much longer than Evan would be.  Alana nodded and Jared shrugged his shoulders.
“Okay, just because we love Evan almost as much as you do,” Zoe replied, swapping the DVDs from the cabinet.
 ***
“Why don’t we take Lyra to see the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in a couple of years?” Alana suggested to her wife as the movie ended and she was changing the DVD to The Holiday as planned.
“That’s a good idea,” Connor agreed.  “Maybe I can try to teach Evan to ice-skate again in Central Park.”
“N-n-n-n-no,” Evan stuttered, suddenly nervous.  “You know what happened last time.”
“But you’ll have me to hold your hand,” Connor reminded him.  “You’ll be safe.”
“Or if you DO fall over, Connor will fall over with you,” Jared joked.
“Shut up, Kleinman,” Connor, Evan and Zoe automatically replied in unison.
“I love you all,” Evan sighed happily, resting his head on Connor’s chest.
“We all love you too,” Connor giggled, gently kissing Evan on the forehead again as he started to drift off to sleep.  Zoe and Alana kissed and snuggled closer together on the opposite couch.
As snow started to fall outside the living room window and The Holiday finally started, Jared watched his friends as he munched on the bag of popcorn Connor had bought at the supermarket.
“This is going to be the best family Christmas EVER!”

We need a reckoning.” West Virginia Senate candidate Paula Jean Swearengin tweeted, “Legalizing cannabis & hemp in #WV will generate revenue fast. In order to share that prosperity with our people, we MUST have representatives who are willing to pass laws that invest in small farms & those who have been disproportionately affected by criminalization.” Florida Republican congressional candidate Jessi Melton tweeted, “#JoeBiden and Kamala Harris are still the reason why thousands of black Americans are still unjustly incarcerated for minor marijuana infractions. Unacceptable.” / STATES Pennsylvania lawmakers approved a budget provision that will allow a company with politically connected owners to get a medical cannabis cultivation and processing license. A California judge ordered the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office to return cannabis oil and cash it seized from a licensed company. Top Missouri medical cannabis regulators were in regular email contact with a lobbyist under Federal Bureau of Investigation scrutiny. Iowa regulators rescinded a bid proposal to license additional CBD medical cannabis dispensaries and plan to reissue a revised call for applications in light of pending changes to the program. Then go to Promethease.com and dna.land.com and import your results (when they're available from 23andMe), For $5.00 they give you loads of medical and other misc. insights from your genetic information. Importing is quick and easy, do it right from the Promethease website (links to 23andMe directly and grabs your data. DNA.land requires you to upload data yourself).
