As Paris in “Romeo and Juliet: Love is a Fire” at the Santa Monica Playhouse, Gavin Mulcahy had to weep over Juliet’s corpse. To do so, he went to a different place. “I take several minutes of solitude before entering and I bury my face in my arms, simulate unsteady breathing, and embrace despair,” he says. While he has typically relied on his character’s “dramatic stakes,” for this show, he has drawn on personal triggers to find those emotions. “It’s more effective, but also more taxing.”

BOOTLEGS 2023
The year is winding down, so it's time to look back at the last 12 month's crop of live tapes. Crowd noise, tape hiss, distortion, murk ... and plenty of magic, people! As I do this year after year, I ask myself: "Why do I do this year after year?" I guess it's a habit I can't break. But I do love something about these cloudy recordings — the immediacy, the imperfections, the possibilities. Each bootleg, no matter how lo-fi, contains a glimmer of hope, a potential for beauty and transcendence. The fact that not all of them (few of them, in fact!) really deliver on that promise is part of the deal. The search continues!
Anyhoo, here's a sampling of the Doom & Gloom goods from 2023 to get you caught up ... thank you to the tapers, the archivists, the fans, the innocents.

BETTY GRABLE
December 18, 1916
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Ruth Grable was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the youngest of three children. Nicknamed ‘Betty’ as a child, she was pressured by her mother to become a performer. She was entered in multiple beauty contests, many of which she won or for which she achieved considerable attention.
Tumblr media
A 12-year-old Grable and her mother traveled to Hollywood in 1929,hoping to achieve stardom.  To get her daughter jobs, Lillian Grable lied about her daughter's age, claiming she was 15. That same year, she made her uncredited film debut as a chorus girl in the all-star revue Happy Days (1929).
Tumblr media
In 1930, at age 13, Grable (under the pseudonym Frances Dean) became one of the original Goldwyn Girls, along with Ann Sothern, Lucille Ball and Paulette Goddard. Grable appeared with Lucille Ball in the short A Night at the Biltmore Bowl (1935), Old Man Rhythm (1935), and Follow the Fleet (1936).
Tumblr media
In late 1939, Betty Grable dated Desi Arnaz when the two were concurrently appearing on Broadway; him in Too Many Girls and her in Du Barry Was a Lady.  Coincidentally, Lucille Ball did the 1943 film of Du Barry, taking the lead from Ethel Merman. Grable’s role was re-written and she was not part of the film.
Tumblr media
Throughout her career, Grable was a celebrated sex symbol. Her bathing suit poster made her the number-one pin-up girl of World War II. Grable's legs were insured by her studio for $1 million as a publicity stunt.
"I became a star for two reasons, and I'm standing on them." ~ Betty Grable
Tumblr media
On an October 1948 episode of Lucille Ball’s radio series “My Favorite Husband” Liz Cugat (Lucy) wonders aloud: “What’s Betty Grable got that I haven’t got?”
Tumblr media
Although she began doing television in 1953 on variety and talk programs, her first scripted program was an episode of “Star Stage” titled “Cleopatra Collins”. Grable played an ex-Miss America. She quickly followed-up by playing Lily Garland in “Twentieth Century” for “Ford Star Jubilee”, an adaptation of the 1932 play about movie stars on a train.
Tumblr media
On a November 15, 1954 episode of “I Love Lucy,” Betty Grable’s name is mentioned by Lucy Ricardo as one of the many Hollywood stars she is looking forward to meeting should Ricky get the role of Don Juan.
Tumblr media
Once in Hollywood, Lucy gets to see Betty Grable’s Beverly Hills home in “The Tour” (ILL S4;E30) in May 1955. The driver (Benny Rubin) describes the home as a ‘ranch style’.
A few months later, just before returning home from Hollywood, Lucy and Ethel visit the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and see Betty Grable’s leg imprint in a slab of cement.
Tumblr media
ETHEL: “What are you doing?” LUCY: “Comparing my leg to Betty Grable’s.” ETHEL: “Oh, it looks identical.” LUCY: “Oh, to you and me maybe, but I doubt it would fool Harry James.”
On February 15, 1943, Grable did indeed leave her leg print and signature in wet cement for the forecourt.
Tumblr media
Her final scripted role on TV was playing herself in “Lucy Wins A Racehorse”, an installment of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” on “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse”. It was filmed in December 1957 and aired on February 3, 1958.
Tumblr media
The episode’s theme grew from the James’ and Arnaz’s shared love of horses and horse-racing.
Tumblr media
In it, Grable appears with her second husband, bandleader Harry James, who she married in 1943 and with whom she had two children. The couple divorced in 1965.  She had first married actor Jackie Coogan, but their relationship lasted only a three years (1937-1940).
Tumblr media
Grable and James do a full out musical performance in the Ricardo living room titled “The Bayamo” in which Grable shows off her legendary legs and James plays his iconic trumpet.
“She was everything to him. It was always Lucy, Lucy, Lucy. She was his life.” ~ Betty Grable, about Desi Arnaz
Tumblr media
In the 1969 Dinah Shore TV special “Like Hep!” Betty Grable’s name is dropped in the title song sung by Dinah, Lucy, and Diana Ross.  That’s hep!
Tumblr media
Grable’s name was also mentioned in the February 1971 “Here’s Lucy” episode “Lucy and Carol Burnett aka The Hollywood Unemployment Follies” (TLS S3;E22). During the episode they ogle a wardrobe rack conspicuously labeled COSTUMES WORN BY BETTY GRABLE AND ALICE FAYE. Faye and Grable did two films together, Tin Pan Alley (1940) and Four Jills in a Jeep (1944).
Tumblr media
In a November 1971 episode of “Here’s Lucy” Dan Dailey dictates a letter to Betty James and Lucy Carter correctly guesses that he is writing to Betty Grable, who did four films with Dailey.
Betty Grable died at age 56 of lung cancer on July 2, 1973 in Santa Monica, California.

Mysterious Death of Scott Ruffalo
Tumblr media
Mark Ruffalo was brought into the world in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Marie Rose (née Hébert), a beautician and beautician and Frank Lawrence Ruffalo, who filled in as a development painter, who likewise had two little girls and another child, Mark's sisters, Tania and Nicole, and his sibling Scott. Growing up, Ruffalo went to both Catholic and reformist schools through his schooling and had depicted himself as a "glad child" during those years, regardless of battling with undiscovered dyslexia and ADD both as a kid and a youthful grown-up.
Having spent his youngster years in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where his dad worked; Mark contended in wrestling in middle school and secondary school in both Wisconsin and Virginia. Ruffalo initially got into acting when he represented the Patriot Playhouse instructed by Nancy P. Curtis, from where he moved on from First Colonial High School. His family later moved to San Diego, California, and afterward to Los Angeles with his sibling, Scott, where Ruffalo took classes at the Stella Adler Conservatory and helped to establish the Orpheus Theater Company.
Through the performance center organization, he composed, coordinated and featured in numerous plays and filled in as a barkeep for near 10 years.
While in their late adolescents, Mark and his sibling Scott, moved to Los Angeles, where they scratched by in a $600-a-month condo by MacArthur Park, sharing a full-size bed.
At a certain point, Mark reviewed how he and his sibling got by during those occasions while he tried out for jobs and Scott simply beginning as a stylist.
"He'd make a f–ruler monster bowl of fish pasta, and we'd eat off that throughout the week," he said. "The best of times, the most exceedingly terrible of times." — Mark on how he and his sibling got by from the beginning into their vocations.
Regardless of the circumstance, Mark and his sibling consistently knew needed to make the best of each circumstance, regardless of how awful and, as with the remainder of their family, actually had each other's back
Unforeseen Tragedy
In any case, misfortune in the long run occured for Ruffalo and the family, of which unanswered inquiries remain and are impossible at any point to find solutions. On December 1, 2008, Scott, a wedded beautician, was found with a shot to his head, and a firearm in his left hand, at his Beverly Hills townhouse and quickly raced to a clinic. After seven days he passed on. He was 39.
The examination concerning his demise drove police to two "people of interest," both of whom were with Ruffalo at the hour of the shooting, Shaha Adham, 26, an affluent Saudi finance manager, and her beau, Brian B. Scofield, 29. The investigators realized Adham had been at Ruffalo's on the grounds that his home reconnaissance got her at his townhouse.
Both she and Scofield were brought in to be interrogated. A short time later, they were delivered however later set up for doubt of endeavored murder before eventually being delivered once more. As expressed by one law implementation source, "I know there was more than one bunch of prints on the firearm. One was Ruffalo's."
As indicated by Adham, a relative of the Saudi imperial family and the granddaughter of Sheik Kamal Adham, Ruffalo was shot during a round of Russian Roulette, turned out badly.
Concerning what her variant of occasions paving the way to the shooting was, as per Adham's legal counselor, Ronald Richard, his customer was there to get a few keys when he (Ruffalo) chose to play a round of Russian Roulette. He further added that the weapon utilized in the shooting had a place with Ruffalo and that he was a known cocaine client with a background marked by utilizing and playing with guns before witnesses. To be sure, Ruffalo had one brush with the law in April of 2002 where he was indicted for a lawful offense accusation for ownership of a controlled substance available to be purchased. A subsequent charge, ownership of a controlled opiate substance, was excused.
All things considered, the Beverly Hills Police Department in the long run announced Ruffalo's demise a consequence of self destruction by Russian Roulette, yet afterward backtracked after the coroner's report came out showing that the point of the section of the slug demonstrated he couldn't in any way, shape or form have shot himself (explicitly, it was to the rear of his head). Thusly, they relabeled the passing as a crime.
With no different leads for the situation, and the lone two known observers to his demise presently "free as a bird," his passing remaining parts perplexing right up 'til the present time, and since been shut by the Beverly Hills Police Department. A long time later, Adham kicked the bucket of an evident medication glut in January of 2012, which didn't get revealed until the next month.
Ruffalo may have remained imperfect and indecencies, as we as a whole do, he, portrayed as a notable and popular person, was a fruitful stylist, who held a permit in cosmetology since 1991, set up his organization in 2001 — Ruff Inc. — and who worked at salons in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and the Giuseppe Franco Salon in the last area.
While it is tragic to believe that apparently Ruffalo's demise may never get completely settled, Mark and his family chose to carry on by remembering the best recollections of Scott. At the hour of his sibling's passing, Mark was set to star in Noah Baumbach's Greenberg, a 2010 parody show, however exited to manage his despondency (the film at last bombarded in the cinematic world).
In the wake of taking a break, Mark got back to acting and proceeded to star as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the broadly fruitful film Marvel film, The Avengers and its spin-offs in the MCU.
Scott Ruffalo might be gone, however his memory lives on through the individuals who adored him most.

What’s up pudding cups, here’s one of those rare occasions where I’m going to actually post some writing! This is an essay about my “Favorite Athlete” (essay title) that I wrote for gym class because they were playing flag football in the grass and I couldn’t participate so she made me write an essay instead Hope you enjoy!
“What happened?” “I woke up this morning, I had yogurt for breakfast… North Korea happened, World War II happened… A lot of things have happened!” Josh Sundquist is a comedian, a motivational speaker, a best-selling author, and an American paralympian. He’s popular on Youtube, and subsequently, social media, where he posts videos of his stand ups and motivational speeches about his life, especially regarding disability and also overcoming adversity. His memoir, which has become a national bestseller, Just Don’t Fall, is described by Sundquist to be about “Childhood, Cancer, Amputation, Romantic Yearning, Truth, and Olympic Greatness” and “How I Grew Up, Conquered Illness, and Made it Down the Mountain.” In this essay, Josh Sundquist’s journey, paralympic achievements, and why he’s my favorite athlete will be discussed.
Josh Sundquist had, and beat, Ewing Sarcoma when he was 9 years old, which is how he lost his left leg. His aforementioned book, Just Don’t Fall, talks about his experience with cancer, becoming and being disabled, and joining the paralympics, among other things. Sundquist was the kind of kid that used to use an entire container of hair gel in his hair, which he remarks on in a Youtube video where he shows how he currently does his hair, and on a separate occasion on a podcast interview with Grace Helbig. He tells of how upsetting it was to lose his hair, especially considering how much it meant to him. It wasn’t all bleak, as his friends came over at some point during this time as a child, and they all shaved their heads for him in support. Reasonable time after that, his parents bought him a trampoline to learn how to balance with one leg. This seemed to work really well, along with whatever else he did throughout his life to adapt and improve on his disability. He started ski racing at age 15, and motivational speaking at 16. In 2001, he wrote for the Daily Guideposts and Guideposts Magazine. Sundquist had Just Don’t Fall published in 2010. He has also been published in The Washington Post and in what was Newsweek's college magazine, Current. Starting in July 2018, he has performed a comedy show named after one of his books, We Should Hang Out Sometime. The show is performed at Santa Monica Playhouse & Group Theatre.
Josh Sunquist mentions in a Youtube video that he wasn’t very good at ski racing when he first started. But that is rather to be expected for someone just starting out at anything. He moved to Colorado at 17 to pursue it full-time. In 2006, after training and competing for six years, he joined the United States Paralympic Ski Team and raced in the IX Paralympic Games in Turan, Italy. He competed in both slalom and giant slalom, which were alpine skiing events. Sundquist talks about his motto that especially helped him through times of frustration during skiing, “1MT 1MT”, which stands for “One More Thing, One More Time.” This meant that when he felt like he didn’t want to go on, he would try one more thing (one more time). He elaborated on this phrase and the sentiment behind it before, explaining that sometimes he wasn’t always so sure if he could go through the rest of his life. But during those times, he would ask himself if he could maybe just get through this moment.
I’m not big on athletes, or sports, or even gym class. I don’t like to watch sports, and I really don’t like to write essays about them. I was reading the list of topics I could choose from, and sighed as they all had inevitably boring topics. The first topic on the list being that I could choose to write about a favorite athlete. “I don’t watch sports,” I thought, as I scrolled past it, very sure that if I were to choose any topic it definitely wouldn’t be that one. “I don’t have a favorite athlete,” I dismissed, decidedly. Much later, a lightbulb went off. I had completely forgotten! “Josh Sundquist is, among other things, an athlete! I can write about him!” I said, but not really, for I was at the dinner table, in the middle of eating dinner. Josh Sundquist is a guy that my sister tried to show me videos of, over a year ago, maybe longer. He’s disabled and uses forearm crutches, and makes jokes about his disability and how people act about it. Aside from one video where he humorously explains how he could fly to Mexico (was it?), get a hip replacement, run with the bulls, get trampled by the bulls, get another hip replacement, and fly back to the US, all for less money than to just get his hip replaced here, this was basically my first real impression. And I was absolutely delighted. He joked about how weird people act sometimes around him, including the funny questions they ask. These questions were often similar if not the same questions people ask me. “What happened?” said some random guy on the street to him. Not hello, not even a rude-but-more-specific “Why are you disabled?”, no. Just two words. “What happened?” The same thing happened to me within the last week. I walked into a convenient store, and the lady at the cash register looked at me, and immediately went “What happened?” When it’s looked past how potentially awful that is, it is actually pretty hilarious. So was Josh Sundquists response to the audience. “I got up in the morning, I had yogurt for breakfast, North Korea happened, World War II happened. A lot of things have happened!” He ended up saying to the guy “What do you mean what happened?” Which the guy and him went back and forth on. When the lady asked me, I just blurted “Nothing. I’m disabled!” then quickly walked into an aisle before she could ask any further questions. On top of that, Josh Sundquist is incredibly fit, he can run really fast, he can even do handstands with his crutches. He has videos where he shows how to run, how to do stairs, and how to carry things with crutches. He also has videos where he reviews different types of crutches. There’s one video where he shows how you can, as a crutch-spert (a crutch expert), ice skate on crutches. Even though I use a wheelchair as well, I don’t identify extremely with it. Not to say I don’t at all, but significantly less than I do with my crutches. I never see anyone with forearm crutches. Just injured people with their underarm crutches. Seeing a disabled person with forearm crutches be so amazing, I can’t describe it. All I can say, is that representation is extremely important.
All in all, Josh Sundquist is an accomplished writer, motivational speaker, comedian, and an American paralympian. What his existence as a known disabled person, who I consider very accomplished, means to me, is indescribable.

Patrick Fabian
Article by Ricky Tavi
Patrick Fabian is likely one of those actors who seems to have been in so many movies we’ve seen so many TV shows we’ve watched and so many adverts we’ve listened to. And yet because his performances and characters are so diverse and convincing, it just hasn’t seemed necessary to remember his real name.
But Patrick Fabian may not be able to avoid the personality spotlight too much longer. As the season of his current CMT sitcom, ‘Working Class’ just ended, he’s looking at another critically acclaimed success to add to his nearly 20 year acting resume.
Patrick spent some time with us and allowed us to discover something of the real life personality behind the brilliant list of stage and screen characters that this fine actor has so often brought to life.
Our interview reveals a man of humor and humility. He gives us a glimpse of his Working Class co-star Ed Asner - is he easy to work with? – And, with a big smile, drops a hint about the most famous screen character he’d welcome the chance to portray. Read on to discover the fascinating background to one of Hollywood’s better kept secrets – Patrick Fabian.
In your 18 year acting career you have appeared in just about every performance medium possible – stage, movies, TV, voice-over, adverts…..the list seems endless. So starting with the most recent, and where today’s buzz is, please divulge something about the new CMT series, ‘Working Class’.
This has been a great experience and a ton of fun to do. It's a smart, funny sitcom that'll get the whole family laughing; it's a real traditional show in the vein of "Roseanne" & "Everybody Loves Raymond". If you haven't tuned in, now's the chance to see what all the fun's about.  And there's gonna be some kissin'!
Do you think you were an easy choice to portray your character?
Well, I run Parker Foods and am the boss of Melissa Peterman and Ed Asner's characters, so clearly, someone in casting thought I knew how to order people around! That, and wear Armani well. I think I can bring a bit of humor and good nature to the usual traits that bosses possess.
I read somewhere that you are happy to be thought of as a ‘working class actor’. If so, are you bringing ‘real life’ to your part – albeit the show is not intended to be taken too seriously?
The show is meant to make people laugh, we're not solving the world's problems, you know? And being a working class actor, for me, means that I get to do a wide variety of roles and situations, and that I'm fortunate enough to work fairly consistently. Although, let's be clear; if you need me to be a Star, I'm open to that.
Ed Asner, one of your co-stars in ‘Working Class’, is known for his real life advocacy of the ‘common man’. What special energy do you think his outlook on life has brought to the show?
Ed's a man of his word and certainly backs up his beliefs with his actions and I respect him for that. His acting experience and skills are totally fun to work with and I've learned a lot from watching him. He's not afraid to fail in life or work.
Comments from your colleagues in the show talk of the fun and good humor that has made the production work such a pleasant experience. With so many seasoned actors are you all able to stick to the script? Is ad libbing allowed?
I can easily say it's been one of the easiest sets to work on; we laughed all the time. And that tone is set by Melissa Peterman; she's a shining light and considering the crazy schedule we were on, that's no small feat. And Melissa comes from improv, so she's wonderful on her feet and can ad-lib all day long. The writers' wrote us great material and they weren't averse to our going off the rails: we were all looking for the funny.
As an actor you’ve portrayed the deadly serious to the comic. How do you classify yourself primarily – if you do?
I think it's all about the point of view you bring to any particular role, and how that fits into the whole, you know? I'm fortunate to work in both serious and comic worlds and I like it like that. However, if James Bond ever opens up..........
Where do you have the most fun? In theater or movies?
They all have their charms, (and frustrations), but I definitely have a soft spot for live theatre; it's where I learned my craft and the immediacy of a play and it's interaction with an audience can't be beat.
All reports are that you have a great sense of humor. Could you ever imagine yourself as a stand-up comedian? Ever tried it?
I have way too much respect for stand-up to try it. I need writers. Wildly, talented writers making me look good. Daily.
As a serious actor, has Shakespeare featured much in your stage experience?
I got my Equity Card at the Shakespeare L.A. Festival years ago playing Moth in "Love's Labor's Lost". Shakespeare under the stars at the John Anson Ford Theatre in the summertime. A wonderful experience and I would kill to be at the Festival in New York City's Central Park.
Ever played Hamlet? Would you want to?
No I haven't. And yes, given the opportunity, I think every male actor would love a crack at it.
Your career has given you the opportunity for a lot of travel. Much time away from home. Now that you are a parent – congratulations, by the way, to you and your wife, Mandy Steckelberg, on the birth of your daughter Abbey Ray – will you be earning fewer frequent flyer miles?
Well, they say have a baby and the world will provide (or something like that) and so far, that has been the case, although most jobs have kept me local. I thought it would be great to get a series in New Zealand or Europe for a few years while Abbey Ray's still a wee one. But my wife has been wonderful about the work when it does take me out of town. Many of friends have managed it all, so I imagine we will too; we should be blessed with such problems, right?
What are some of your favorite place around the world?
Wandering the old streets of Barcelona, the Playhouses of London, NYC's Central Park, Muir Woods just over the Golden Gate Bridge and Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, Ca.
You are one of the hardest working and most experienced actors in today’s industry – and yet you manage to avoid the excesses of the paparazzi. How do you balance keeping a private life with the demands of your work to be in the spotlight?
Well, going back to what a 'working class' actor is; I'm familiar to a lot of people because I've been in such broad spectrum of venues, but I don't necessarily stand out as one particular role, one that the paparazzi or public is that enamored or obsessed with, so I get the benefits of being known, but without the downside of being crazily sought after. (Again, if you need a STAR, however......)
You’ve been active in the union movement on behalf of stage and screen actors and others in the entertainment industry, and have held union elective office. Could you imagine a political career in the future?
I've really enjoyed my experience on the SAG Hollywood Board; it's a great reminder that you need to have personal responsibility for what goes on in your Union, or for that matter in your City, State and Nation. As much as I would be interested in a political career, I think working with a baby, a chimpanzee and Screech in a single episode of "Saved By The Bell: The College Years", disqualifies me.
It’s difficult to imagine now, that as an actor you’ve ever found yourself ‘resting’. How difficult is it to sift through the offers and scripts to find those that interest you? Are you very selective?
I love to work. And the next job is always the one I'm interested in finding out about. Different jobs rear their heads different ways; this past year has included Commercials, Low-Budget Films, 1/2 Sitcoms, Hourlong Guest Spots, Live Theatre and VoiceOver: I've been wildly fortunate and love to stay busy.
When you are ‘resting’ at home, what do you like to do for R & R?
Take walks with the whole family. (wife, baby & the two dogs) And cooking is very relaxing.
What musical preferences? Are you playing Mozart for your daughter?
I love Rock & Roll and 80's Hair Metal, but there's room in my head for lots of different things. We play a kaleidoscope of music for Abbey Ray; I hope she takes to it, but you cannot force it. (So far, Rock-a-Bye Baby: Pink Floyd is a big hit!)
What movies have you enjoyed recently?
Loved "The Social Network", "Inception" and "The Awful Truth"(Cary Grant)
Your character in “Working Class’ dresses exceptionally well for a grocery store manager! An anomaly of the storyline? Your stage and screen characters have provided just about every costume statement that could ever be made! What styles reflect your personal comfort zones?
Only on television does a store manager sport Theory, Donna Karan & Armani: What a great business! I love comfortable, horse-riding clothing; Robert Redford around 1974. And the 'Swashbuckler' wardrobe from "Xena" will be hard to top.
Can you give an idea of where you see your career progressing over the next few years? Maybe the next James Bond? Could you ever imagine living elsewhere from LA or is that almost a necessity that comes with the work?
Did you say Bond?  I'd love to spend a chunk of time in New York, albeit with a steady gig. But I love Los Angeles, its home for me and my family now and I wouldn't have it any other way.
It’s clear that you are a man with an active social conscience and also a man of letters – graduate of Penn State & California State Universities. Do you have any words of advice to young actors and performers starting their careers in today’s entertainment industry?
It's the greatest business when's it's all working; and absolutely devastating when it doesn't. Don't take it or yourself too seriously. However, learn your craft. Go to school or take class, and take IT seriously.

Here’s my shot of Troy Kotsur at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards. It’s funny Kat Kramer posted I photo I took at an ASL event a couple years back where she was sneaking up on Troy who was napping at the time in a playhouse reception area after the ASL show had ended. It’s funny how such things happen as I’m shooting him here for his performance in CODA. @troykotsur #troykotsur @ifc #indiefilms #spiritawards #santamonicapier #santamonica #undertheboardwalk #independentspiritawards #questlove #kristenstewart #awardseason (at Santa Monica Pier) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca-EKaXLbCr/?utm_medium=tumblr

Famous Muses & Girlfriends in Filmmaking Pt. 6
MUSE: Julie Andrews (born Julia Elizabeth Wells)
Julie was born on October 1st, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, England as the result of an extramarital affair her mother, Barbara had while married to her first husband, Edward Wells. By the time Julie was 8 years old, Barbara was divorced from Edward and married to Ted Andrews. The three of them would perform in local playhouses to make money. Julie called this period in her life “very black” in her 2008 memoir Home, because they were so poor and her stepdad was a POS alcoholic and straight up creep. But Ted also eventually managed to sponsor singing lessons for Julie, where she discovered she had perfect pitch. At 13, Julie became the youngest person to ever perform in front of the royal family during a 1948 televised “Royal Variety Performance.” In 1952 she voiced the lead character in the English dub of The Singing Princess. Her impressive stage credits include ‘Aladdin’ (1950) and ‘Humpty Dumpty’ (1951) on West End, and ‘The Boy Friend’ (1954-55), ‘My Fair Lady’ (1956-59) and ‘Camelot’ (1960-62) on Broadway. On screen, she’s best remembered as the leads in the iconic live TV broadcast Cinderella (1957) and the classic Hollywood musicals The Sound of Music (1965), Mary Poppins (1964) and Victor/Victoria (1982). With all three movies, she was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars and won for Poppins. To younger viewers, she’s also known as Mia’s grandmother in The Princess Diaries (2001).
Julie’s first husband was set & costume designer Tony Walton whom she was with from 1959 to 1967. Tony later revealed that he first fell in love with Julie while watching one of her performances of ‘Humpty Dumpty’ (aww). Apparently he was a little pretentious too and proposed with a broach rather than a traditional engagement ring (…a broach though?). In Julie’s memoir, she mentioned the first time she spotted her second husband Blake Edwards in real life was actually at a party during her honeymoon to Tony. Julie was also the main reason Tony got his first Hollywood job: a visual consultant on Mary Poppins, where as before he was working in only theatre. The two also have a daughter, Emma, born in 1962.
Around the time Julie and Tony separated, Hollywood director Blake Edwards was reportedly quoted describing Julie as “So sweet, she probably has violets between her legs.” Rather than take offense, Julie had a sense of humor and personally sent a bouquet of violets to his home. A year later Blake and Julie collaborated on the movie musical Darling Lili (1970), which was infamously a disaster production and box-office wise. But it did give us one of the most prolific celebrity couples of all time, with hit movies like The Tamarind Seed (1974), 10 (1979), SOB (1981) and Victor/Victoria. Along with a few duds, like The Man Who Loved Women (1983), That’s Life! (1986) and the short-lived sitcom “Julie” (1992). Both Lili and SOB feature sequences parodying Julie’s real struggle to shed her family friendly image and portray characters more mature. Blake was nominated for his only Oscar, Best Adapted Screenplay, for Victor/Victoria alongside Julie’s Best Actress nom. The couple adopted two Vietnamese orphans, Amy and Joanna, after volunteering for the Committee of Responsibility war relief during the Vietnam war. Julie also later revealed that she and Blake took therapy together in the 1980s when their careers were dwindling, and again in the ‘90s after Julie lost her singing voice resulted from a botched throat surgery (what a crime).
Blake died from pneumonia at age 88 in 2010 at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA with Julie and their kids by his side. Currently, Julie’s pretty much retired from performing, but still occasionally does TV and voice over work.

Remembering a quality '60s television show

The western end of Route 66 in Santa Monica, California
Summer is drawing to a close and with it the season for road trips. America has had a love affair with cars and open roads for more than a century now. Back in the 1950s, Dinah Shore used to sing "See the USA in your Chevrolet" on her television show. And millions of Americans did. Back then, Chevrolet was the most popular car in the country. They could be seen everywhere on the roads of America. That explains why when writer Stirling Silliphant created Route 66, the first television show that glorified road trips, the lead characters hit the road in a Chevy Corvette.
Route 66, which aired from 1960 to 1964, was unique in that it was shot on location every week in a different place. The lead characters were Martin Milner as Tod Stiles, a privileged young man who just graduated from an Ivy League college, and George Maharis as Buz Murdock, an orphan who grew up in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York and worked for Stiles's father's shipping company. When the older Mr. Stiles dies unexpectedly, Tod finds that the business is bankrupt, and the only thing his father has left him is a brand new Chevy Corvette. He and Murdock then decide to take to the road in the Corvette to see the country, and find jobs and adventures along the way. Although the show is called Route 66, and has that iconic theme song by Nelson Riddle, the duo are not restricted to traveling that road. They travel all over the United States and even into Canada.
The show was remarkable in that at a time where just about every show on television was shot in a studio, the Route 66 cast and crew actually shot each episode "on the road" in 25 states by the series end. In fact, it was such an "on the road" show that Jack Kerouac tried to sue, claiming it plagiarized his famous novel. But Route 66 had nothing to do with Kerouac's novel other than the idea of two guys being "on the road."
Because Route 66 was set in a different location every week, it had a semi-anthology feel to it. Only Tod and Buz were constants in the first three seasons. (Maharis left the show in January 1963 and was replaced by Glenn Corbett a couple of months later. Corbett played Lincoln Case, a Vietnam War vet.) But there were guest stars every week playing the new characters in the new locations the Corvette pulled into each week. These included some of the greatest names in Hollywood such as Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney Jr., Buster Keaton and Joan Crawford. It also gave many young actors prominent exposure that boosted their careers. Among these were Robert Duvall, Ed Asner, James Caan, James Coburn, Barbara Eden, Peter Graves, George Kennedy, Jack Lord, William Shatner and Robert Redford. This constant parade of guest stars every week kept the show interesting. You never knew who Tod and Buz were going to meet in their travels. And that's the great fun of watching it now.
But it was not just the wonderful location shooting and top-notch guest stars that made Route 66 a hit. It was the fabulous writing of Stirling Silliphant. Amazingly, Silliphant wrote nearly every episode of Route 66. He broke into television writing for Playhouse 90, Perry Mason and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He then created Naked City, which was a police drama shot on location in New York City. After Route 66, he won an Oscar for writing the script for the hit movie In the Heat of the Night. He also went on to write the scripts for Village of the Damned, Dirty Harry and The Towering Inferno. That's one fabulous writing career.
Route 66 was a remarkable achievement in that Silliphant and his crew were able to film 30 or more episodes every year, all shot in different locations and all featuring great actors and intelligent scripts that dealt with serious issues. I recommend taking a ride with Tod and Buz sometime, just for kicks. All 116 episodes are now available for viewing for free on the Roku Channel.

LISTEN: Cops Pull Guns on Ving Rhames in His Own Home After Neighbor’s 911 Call
“Mission Impossible: Fallout” actor Ving Rhames tells a radio host that police rolled up on his house, pulled 9MM guns out and pointed them at him. Rhames explained it was mid-afternoon, he’s inside with his dogs, and he’s watching EPSN when he hears noises in his backyard. He goes to check the door and a “red dot” appears on his head; police have 9MM guns pointed at him. “They recognized me,” Rhames told Clay Cane on Sirius XM. Rhames said the Santa Monica Police captain’s son plays ball with his son. “They recognized me,” after he’d already been threatened with several armed officers at his home. Rhames asked police why they were at his house with guns pulled on him. He was told a woman, a neighbor, “called 911 and said a large black man was breaking into the house.” Rhames went to the house with police, which he said was right across the street, and the woman denied calling 911. Rhames was stunned. This is what I keep saying about charging people who make false crime calls to police. There's no WAY this guy didn't know he lived next door to Ving Rhames… https://t.co/3XO3kA23tc — Jason Johnson (@DrJasonJohnson) July 28, 2018 Rhames, now starring in “Mission Impossible: Fallout,” was born Irving Rameses Rhames in Harlem, New York. He attended the New York High School of Performing Arts and found he loved acting. Rhames went on to the prestigious Julliard School of Drama, and began his career in New York theater and in a ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ productions. Rhames made his Broadway debut in “The Winter Boys” in 1984 and the same year, appeared on American Playhouse: Go Tell It on the Mountain. Rhames soon started getting roles on TV including “Miami Vice,” and “Crime Story.” He also played soap roles. In 1994, Quentin Tarantino cast Rhames as drug dealer Marsellus Wallace in “Pulp Fiction” and his life changed. “Pulp Fictoin” was not only a monster hit, it was immediately a cult classic. Soon director Brian De Palma came calling and cast Rhames alongside Tom Cruise as the computer hacker Luther Stickell in “Mission: Impossible.” Rhames was now a mainstream Hollywood movie star. HOLLYWOOD, : The cast of the new film “Mission Impossible 2” poses at the film’s premiere at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA, 18 May, 2000. From L-R: actors Ving Rhames, Tom Cruise, Thandie Newton, and Dougray Scott. (ELECTRONIC IMAGE) AFP PHOTO Lucy NICHOLSON (Photo credit should read LUCY NICHOLSON/AFP/Getty Images) Rhames played the lead in HBO’s “Don King: Only in America,” and that performance won him the 1998 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries. But Rhames did something that stunned the audience and the world: Described as an “incredible display of compassion,” Rhames gave the award to fellow nominee Jack Lemmon, the longtime actor who Rhames said was “more deserving” of the award. Rhames reprised his role as Luther Stickell in “Mission: Impossible II” and his unmistakable voice gave life to the character of Cobra Bubbles in “Lilo & Stitch.” Rhames also played a cop fighting cannibal zombie hordes in “Dawn of the Dead.” Millennials now know who we are talking about. A fitness and weightlifting enthusiast, Rhames is also renowned for his kindness and benevolent attitude towards others, according to IMDb. According to IMDb, while filming “The Saint of Fort Washington” in New York, Rhames met a homeless man who turned out to be his long-lost older brother, Junior, who had lost contact with the family after serving in Vietnam. Rhames immediately got his brother food, clothing and moved him into his own apartment. Rhames, even in the telling of what occurred when police stormed his home with guns drawn, delivers the story in a calm, reasoned manner despite the frightening situation. He did wonder what if it had been his son police encountered. Coming up on The @claycane Show: Ving Rhames from the new movie "Mission: Impossible – Fallout." Now playing in theaters!
