Hailing from Sweden to the City of Angels in the early 80s, Etta Karlsson fled quickly to Los Angeles at the first opportunity she was given to pursue her dreams of becoming an actor. That dream was promptly squashed at every opportunity, but while she found no success in her career she did find some kind of financial stability and maybe even love — all in the form of hospitality heir and billionaire Edward Barlow. The two met when Etta was waiting tables at one of the more high end restaurants in Beverly Hills and as the story goes, they quickly fell in love and married six months after meeting. Rumors flew that they’d only wed because Etta had fallen pregnant but regardless, they soon welcomed a healthy baby girl they’d name Thea.

The union between the two of them didn’t last long, as it often goes in Hollywood. Edward was a notorious playboy and it wasn’t shocking when he eventually left Thea’s mother for another woman — someone younger, more beautiful, and more blonde. Child support and alimony wasn’t nearly enough to live on, so Etta continued working as a nurse anyway to support herself and her daughter where Edward wouldn’t. Thea was a quiet child at first, never speaking out of turn or doing anything she shouldn’t — but as years went on and she became increasingly aware of her father’s actions, she began to act out. She resented Edward and his new family and the court mandated time she had to spend with them, the only saving graces being her younger half sisters who she knew were innocent in the whole ordeal. Thea loved them both, doing everything she could to keep them from becoming completely susceptible to the Barlow name, but ultimately she lost that battle to her step-mother and her antics. Brie became a clone of the woman in question and her youngest sister, Cass, didn’t seem far behind in Thea’s eyes. As time went on, she distanced herself from the family when she could, as it became increasingly apparent that she was on the outside of their circle.

By the time Thea was ten, she knew she wanted to be an actress and do what her mother wasn’t able to do — a failure she blames completely on her father. She had no trouble using his last name to get started in the industry (though she would eventually drop the name Barlow completely in favor of her middle name, Ellis) and as time went on, Thea ended up landing a guest role in a sitcom series at just thirteen years old. By the end of her junior year she dropped out of school, deciding to earn her GED in favor of shooting her first real feature film. It was a box office flop, the film barely recovered its budget in revenue and Thea couldn’t help but feel embarrassed and ashamed when she saw the finished product for herself — but her raw talent was there, real and exposed for the world to see. Even if the film itself had been terrible, she’d soon had studios and directors sending her agent scripts for auditions she never would have been considered for before. Thea Ellis would be deemed a young star to watch for, and for a brief moment in time the public loved this new, up and coming actress.

Thea’s true breakout role came in the form of a YA dystopian action movie, followed by a brief slew of dramas and self proclaimed high-brow films, earning herself a spot as a critically acclaimed actress by the time she was 22. One role even earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and an eventual win, something even Thea herself had a hard time believing was true. The online film buff community claims the Academy had slim pickings that year and she’d won by a fluke, but the general public seemed to love her and while she wasn’t sure she deserved the Academy’s recognition, she did know she’d worked hard to get where she was. In the meantime, her personal life had been covered page to page by tabloids following the whirlwind romance between Thea and her then boyfriend, a movie producer who would eventually become her husband when they wed just after she won her first Oscar.

The behind the scenes of Thea’s highly publicized romance wasn’t nearly as glamorous as the press made it seem. Ben was a good man, a great one even — but his studio worked with some of the most vile men in Hollywood; men Thea had no problem telling off when she needed to. Of course her behavior made headlines, studios deemed her hard to work with and she personally grew resentment toward Ben for continuing a relationship with these men who were relentlessly trying to blacklist her from the industry. Though it barely stopped her, as it seemed for a brief moment in time that Thea was set to be Hollywood’s darling indefinitely. The building momentum of her career came to an abrupt halt, however, when her husband was involved in a fatal car accident just under two years after they married. Rumors flew around Hollywood and eventually the tabloids started reporting that she’d orchestrated the entire thing as revenge for his inability to stand by her against other studio execs. Obviously it was a ridiculous rumor and, of course, completely untrue — but it did enough damage to Thea’s image that she retreated from the public eye for a few years, only taking on roles in small films she felt connected to and generally shying away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood that she’d once found herself in the center of.

Of course, with her reclusion and mysterious departure from the Hollywood scene came even more salacious rumors as the years passed. Thea turned a blind eye to them all, choosing instead to focus on her family and the work she was doing. Her mother’s health had rapidly deteriorated over time and when she eventually passed, Thea had ultimately cut herself out of the public eye completely. She dated here and there and desperately tried to keep her relationships under wraps, though her most recent fling with another actor who turned out to be desperate for more fame made more headlines than she’d seen in a long time due to the man’s wandering eye — and after four years of the tabloids calling her the problem, Thea eventually broke it off for good. Now she’s been truly keeping to herself in her beachside home in Santa Monica, the only project she’s been working on being a television drama series that she couldn’t pass up once she’d read the script HBO had sent her way — the fact that one of her first childhood co-stars was already attached to the project had simply been an added bonus. For now, Thea’s kept her name mostly out of the tabloids for a year or so while filming, but the release of the series and the interesting dynamic she has with her co-star may turn her public image on its head once again.

Summary: The annual Arsenal Christmas video

"Hi everyone," Leah says to the camera," I'm Leah Williamson and I just want to say, sorry, Mum. I know you told me not to let her do this before Christmas day, but I'm here with the youngest member of our squad and...What are we doing today, bean?"

You sit in the middle of a little half-circle of the Arsenal girls with a little sack in front of you. There's a Santa hat on your head and you're holding the sack like you're scared it will float away.

"Presents!" You cheer. "I'm like Santa!"

"You are like Santa," Leah says, smiling at the camera," So we've got our own Santa here at Arsenal and she's going to close her eyes, spin around and give everyone their Christmas gifts. Ready, bean?"

"Ready!"

You close your eyes nice and tight, spin around and aimlessly wander to your left. Arms clamp around your waist and you open your eyes to see Teyah and Lessi.

You beam and reach into your sack. "For you!" You give them both their gifts.

"Top trumps!" Teyah says triumphantly as Lessi pries her Michael Jordan Funko Pop out of the package.

"I'm gonna put this in my locker."

You close your eyes again, squeezing them tight as Lessi helps you spin. You go straight this time and fall into the laps of Noelle and Cloe.

Cloe ends up with the 100 pics riddle game and Noelle gets a fondue thing. They both seem especially happy and Noelle ruffles your hair.

"I'll have to bring you round for fondue, bean."

You don't know what fondue is but you think it's food so you're happy to go.

Next up is Lina and Stina - who catches you when you stumble - and they get a little teddy bear and a tree ornament of Stina kissing the trophy.

"You gotta put it on the tree," You say to her as she laughs at the picture," Because that's what it's for." You turn to Lina. "And have to give your bear cuddles. Teddies die without cuddles."

Caitlin and Vic are next and you get a picture on Vic's new camera with the three of you and Caitlin wearing her new Arsenal beanie.

You fall onto Viv on the next round and giggle hysterically as your favourite Lia moves to tickle you. You give her her gift first which ends up being big plastic things to pick up leaves with. Frida gets a special ornament with a picture of her scoring.

Viv gets a nice jumper with her and Beth on.

"You gotta wear it to the next game!" You say.

Viv laughs. "Maybe I will."

Gio and Kim follow them and you sit in Kim's lap as Gio unwraps the blue Arsenal bag that's meant to sit on her hips. Kim laughs in embarrassment as she gets a mug that proclaims her as the best captain ever and has an arrow that points at her when she drinks from it.

Laura catches you on the next round when you misstep on Kathrine's ankle.

Laia lets you have some of the Spanish gift she gets. It's kind of like nougat but it's got nuts in it and you're not too sure that you like the texture.

Kathrine gets socks (you always end up with socks in your stocking) and Laura gets a snow globe with a picture of her only goal in it.

Laia and Kathrine both help you do your spins and the next person you fall into is your sister.

She hugs you tight around the waist as you balance on her lap while digging through the bag. Her gift is one of the longer ones and it takes you a little bit to get it out of your sack.

You sit down properly when she leans forward to open it, bursting into laughter when it's revealed to be a keyboard.

"I'll teach you, bean," She says, pressing a few of the keys," Won't that be fun?"

"I don't have to do everything you do," You say a bit condescendingly but you're smiling so Leah knows how you really feel, pinching at your cheek.

"Off you go, bean," She says," You've got more presents to give out."

She spins you around so much that you basically crash into Jen and Beth.

Jen ends up with a book of Christmas carols for the guitar while Beth gets the same jumper as Viv just in a different colour.

"That's you and Viv," You tell her.

"Yeah, bean! That's me and Vivi!"

Naomi gets her gift next, a book of very unfunny dad jokes that you only laugh at so she doesn't feel sad that she's not funny at all.

Manu, Kyra and Steph come next.

Manu gets a picture of the goalkeeper union while Kyra gets a packet of Tim Tams that she lets you eat two from.

"It's a jumper for Calvin!" You exclaim when Steph unwraps her own present.

She looks ecstatic and she swears that she'll send a picture of Calvin wearing it to Leah's phone for you to see.

The last person to get her gift is Katie. She looks confused for a moment as she unwraps it before a smile splits her face.

"It's a luxury cat advent calendar," She says.

"For Cooper!" You say.

"That is class. He's gonna love that."

She pulls you in for a hug before letting you plop yourself back on your sister's lap.

She covers your eyes for the last time as someone places the last gift on your lap.

You rip open the packaging and squeal when you reveal an Arsenal jersey. It's got your favourite number on the back and instead of Williamson like all of Leah's jerseys, it's got the words 'The Boss' on the back.

You pull it over your head with help from your sister and she nudges you up to wave and smile at the cameras.

"Do you remember what to say?" She prompts you.

"Merry Christmas, Gunners!"

UPCOMING INVADER ZIM CAST AND CREW Q&A - MY FORMAL CAMPAIGN TO MAKE IT LIVE STREAMED

Okay listen up y’all, this shits important

I found out that there is going to be a special event at The Frida Cinema playing Enter The Florpus followed by a Q&A (or All A as per Jhonen)

Obviously we cannot ask the cinema to stream a movie, and that’s not what is important but I contacted the cinema to ask them if it were at all possible to buy a ticket to livestream or record the event to show for a limited time.

The cinema seemed receptive! In the email they said Nostalgic Nebula is helping running the event so a quick Google search has given me their contact information as well. I am going to reach out via their email as well.

Now as we all know, numbers are important. Let’s all email and ask to have this become an online event. I am reaching out to all Invader Zim fans whether you be shippers, gore fans, soft fans, NSFW or SFW it doesn’t matter. No in fighting, don’t ignore it because you don’t like the blogs usual content. We all want this to happen. Now some guidelines I feel are important:

I cannot stress this enough, being rude is not going to make this happen.

ASK TO PAY FOR A TICKET

Money talks, no matter how many people ask they will be more inclined if we all say we are willing to purchase a ticket for a live-streamed or recorded event.

NO SPAMMING

Just send one email and reply as appropriating, we wanna overwhelm them positively and spamming “make it a livestream!” Is not only annoying but it could overload this, I’m assuming, smaller more local theatre. Don’t spam the cast, the crew, social media’s, for the love of GOD don’t spam Jhonen, he’s not in charge of this and if we annoy him about this he would demand it not recorded out of spite.

ASK FOR IT TO BE LIVE STREAMED OR RECORDED

Not every company is capable of live streaming events and could easily be overwhelmed or crash. Be sure to ask if it can be live streamed OR recorded, if they can record it and upload it for a limited time viewing that could be more accessible for them.

You know, it will be really interesting that when BH is reunited, they don’t recognize each other as they once thought. Like, this group were split up and went through different series of events. Who knows how long they’re separated (though at the moment it’s only been a few days). Because, along the way, they learn and grow to adapt with their surroundings. I want to see how they navigate through each other again. Learning about their new parts and seeing them with a different light.

16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?

OK, buckle up, this will be long lmao. (Share one of them? I'll share ALL of them)

1) So first, there's my Secret Santa fic, which is secret so I won't say anything more about it, except: I'm seriously having the best time of my life. Thank God for people with amazing prompts. I hope my giftee will like it, but if they don't, at least I will have had fun writing it 😂

2) I've got my current two big WIPs, The Harder You Fall and The Highest Bidder, that have been put on the back burner for the moment so I can work on my SeSa, but I'll go back to them ASAP.

3) I started writing something about Tadej and a haunted house and Creature Jonas, but I've stopped to write more urgent projects with deadlines... I really want to go back to it sometime soon though. Maybe for next Halloween, haha.

4) I've started writing about your prompt "Our Little Jonas" (no, I haven't forgotten! Sorry this is taking so long urghhh). It's also been put on hold for the moment because I had pain in my hands for a long while and couldn't write, but I'll go back to it too!

5) I've got a nice little project coming up with my lovely ladies @indie-summer and @ridingupsaturn for Valentine's Day, but the deadline is a bit further away so I haven't really been thinking about what I should do with the prompt yet!

6) I've got a triptych fic idea that would be three one-shots written in an Inception kind of way. It's supposed to be PWP. I've started one and it immediately veered into plot. It's going to be hard. 😂

7) I really want to go back to my Tadej discovers AO3 fic. @loxen06 and I had so much fun thinking about ideas for this fic. I hope I can at least publish a new chapter for Christmas, one year after the first one was published 😂

So, yup. Maybe I'll manage to finish all of that in the next twenty years!

40. If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

I would looove to see a scene from the Highest Bidder: the moment Jonas stops his bike next to Tadej having a drink with João in Tenerife, with the sun low in the sky shining behind him and lighting him up from behind, seen from Tadej's POV!

And from my other fic THYF, I'd love to see the "Pauline Ballet photo" with Jonas coming down the steps with his trophy and looking at Tadej, while Tadej is holding Frida in his arms and looking back at him and smiling, and Frida with her head on Tadej's shoulder, unsmiling, staring right at the photographer. I spent so much time imagining that picture in my head 😂

Viet Film Fest 2024

Hello, dear followers. Wherever you are reading this, I certainly hope that things have been going well. For my fellow Californians, I hope you've been staying cool this scorching last few days. I know that longtime followers are not used to anything on my tumblr that hints of self-promotion (if you don't count the "My Movie Odyssey"-tagged write-ups as self-promotion, that is). So please permit me something that is dear to my heart (and the ICYMI reblogs to come).

Since 2021, yours truly has been the Artistic Director of Viet Film Fest, an Orange County, California-based hybrid film festival that showcases movies made by and/or featuring people of Vietnamese descent from all around the world. It is the largest festival of its type in the diaspora, and it is based in-person in the community where the largest population of Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam resides.

VFF 2024, the 15th edition of the festival (which used to be biannual in the early days), takes place virtually from October 5-20. It takes place in-person at the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, California on October 11, 12, and 13.

The festival is part of a small, but mighty non-profit known as the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association (VAALA). VAALA is 501(c)3 non-profit that was founded in 1991 to provide artists of Vietnamese descent a platform to express their artistry. VFF is the most visible part of VAALA, but we also host fine art galleries and the annual Viet Book Fest.
