The birds were no match for the bears on Thursday afternoon in Saratoga when the Santa Clara Bruins barrelled past the Saratoga Falcons with ease. Santa Clara stormed out of the gates in the top of the first and never looked back. Before Bruins’ starting pitcher John Kepner even toed the rubber for his first pitch of the game, Santa Clara already had a 4-0 lead. Read more at svvoice.com

In a “most excellent” display of rock, Dogstar–featuring Hollywood outsider favorite, Keanu Reeves on bass–played to a sold out Catalyst main room last night. The air was more electrified than the batteries of the Matrix as everyone anxiously waited to get a glimpse of the star. Despite the show starting at 8pm, Catalyst staff had been at the club since 10am setting up the stage and keeping fans away from the tour buses all day.
music in the park san jose
Yet, despite the early call time, stage managers, runners and security were in just as good of spirits as the fans later in the evening. That’s just the magic of Keanu.
While the official time the doors opened was 7pm, VIP lanyard ticket holders were allowed in twenty minutes before. A group of fifty or so individuals rushed to the front of the stage to stake their place. Every once in a while a friend from any given group would go to the bar and place an order of drinks to bring back while the crowd broke into cheers whenever the door to the green room opened.
By the time the opening band, Sons of Silver, hit the stage the Catalyst bars were in full gear cranking out drinks to thirsty crowds. The Los Angeles five piece is touring off their latest single, “Running Out of Words” ahead of the release of their debut full-length, Runaway Emotions. Featuring former members of Pearl Jam, Candlebox and Skillet, Sons of Silver brings a certified classic rock sound with a twist from keyboardist Brina Kabler. Their first time in Santa Cruz and at The Catalyst, Sons of Silver singer Peter Argyropoulos acknowledged the venue’s historic past.
“It’s good to be in a proper rock ‘n roll club,” he told the audience, noting the current Summer Vacation Tour with Dogstar has taken the bands to multiple casino resort shows.
After a 20 minute or so break between bands, the crowd erupted as the three piece Dogstar took the stage. They opened the set “Blonde,” an Echo & the Bunnymen-esque song that also opens Dogstar’s new album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and the Palm Trees, which came out in October 2023. Throughout the set they played a number of new tracks like the break-up ballads, “How The Story Ends” and “Glimmer” along with energetic anthem, “Breach.”
After a quick five minute break, Dogstar returned for a four song encore that included lively cover versions of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” and The Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated,” maybe or maybe not in honor of the day being the 20th anniversary of the death of Johnny Ramone.
As they closed out the set singer Bret Domrose–a Santa Clara native who has also acted in movies like The Replacements with bassist Reeves and previously played bass in San Francisco new wave punk act, The Nuns–told The Catalyst he was once in a local band as “a kid” that tried to play the venue but couldn’t get a gig.
“So thanks for finally letting me in,” he joked before the band walked off stage.
Living up to his reputation as a “regular person” and grateful star, Reeves re-emerged once most of the venue cleared out to greet fans and hangout with old friends. Before heading back onto the bus he signed autographs and took a couple of photos with some lucky fans while rocking a comfy pair of UGG boots. Like his character in The Devil’s Advocate said, it’s “free will after all.”

(JTA) – At least two more synagogues in the United States evacuated their congregants over the weekend following bomb threats, the latest in a series of such calls that have put dozens of congregations on high alert heading into the High Holidays.
One of the synagogues was threatened during the pre-Rosh Hashanah Selichot services on Saturday night, in a sign that the perpetrators of the wave of attacks are paying careful attention to when synagogues are holding events before calling in their threats.
Since mid-July, at least 49 synagogues in 13 states have received the threatening calls, none of which have been linked to credible bomb threats, according to the Anti-Defamation League. That was up from 26 congregations four weeks ago —and the ADL expects the threats to continue when the High Holidays begin with the start of Rosh Hashanah on Friday evening.
“Every weekend this network of swatters continues to identify targets and are calling in fake bomb threats,” Oren Segal, vice president of the ADL’s Center on Extremism, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, using a term referring to pranks that draw out a large number of police officers. “So that number is increasing and will potentially keep increasing.”
Segal said the calls are part of a coordinated campaign orchestrated by antisemitic trolls and focused on synagogues that livestream their services, so the perpetrators can watch reactions to the threats in real time. But he noted that some institutions have been targeted even though they don’t livestream their events, and that the culprits are also developing a growing interest in non-Jewish institutions such as mosques and Black churches.
The synagogues that received bomb threats this weekend were Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills, California, in the Bay Area, and Congregation B’nai Israel in St. Petersburg, Florida. In both cases, the synagogues emptied out as police conducted full safety sweeps of the premises.
The threat on Beth Am, a Reform congregation, was called in during Friday night services, at a time when the synagogue was hosting U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo and Jeremy Ben-Ami, president of the liberal Israel lobby J Street. Both guests were reported safe by leaders of the Bay Area congregation.
“As a community, we remain resolute and determined in the face of this act of antisemitic harassment,” read a letter Beth Am congregational leaders sent to their community just before midnight on Friday, after the synagogue had been swept and cleared, according to J. The Jewish News of Northern California, which first reported on the incident.
B’nai Israel, a Conservative congregation, received the threat as congregants were exiting the Selichot services on Saturday night. The St. Petersburg police department and B’nai Israel’s rabbi, Philip Weintraub, confirmed details of the synagogue’s evacuation with JTA.
“It was not disruptive to our worship,” Weintraub told JTA, adding that the police “took it very seriously.”
A spokesperson for the St. Petersburg Police Department told JTA that the investigation was still ongoing, but that law enforcement would treat the incident as a false bomb threat, which is punishable with prison time. Florida has grappled with a recent rise in antisemitic activity, and a new state law aims to make it easier to prosecute “ethnic intimidation.” But that measure hasn’t yet succeeded in curbing a statewide epidemic of antisemitic fliers, some of which were dropped outside the West Palm Beach area over Labor Day.
The Santa Clara County sheriff’s office, which oversees law enforcement in Los Altos Hills, did not return JTA requests for comment on its own bomb threat investigation.
In mid-August, two other synagogues in California also evacuated their livestreamed Shabbat services over a single weekend due to bomb threats.
There have been other evacuations of Jewish institutions that have gone unreported because they have chosen not to publicize them, Segal said.
“They don’t want to necessarily, I presume, give these trolls the satisfaction of letting everybody know every time they’re evacuated,” he said, adding that institutions should make such decisions “based on what they think is best for the community.” In some instances, when synagogues have issued a statement about an evacuation, the perpetrators have used those statements to boast of their success, Segal said.
This is not the first time false bomb threats have been called into a series of Jewish institutions. More than 100 such threats were called into Jewish community centers in the early months of 2017 — most of which, it was later discovered, came from a teen in Israel. In 2020, dozens of JCCs received a separate series of emailed bomb threats.
Weintraub is determined to not be rattled by the experience. Instead, he takes comfort in knowing the congregation already heeds security precautions recommended by police. Heading into Rosh Hashanah, he said, he isn’t scared.
“My understanding is their goal is to shake us, and I’m not going to be shaken,” he said.

SERIOUS Custom:
1951 Studebaker Woodie - Never Slow Down - StreetRodder
Body
Gray Baskerville accurately described Dennis Varni as "a hot rodder's hot rodder." Since buying a '31 Model A as a teenager in the late '50s, Dennis doesn't seem to have slowed down ever. He has amassed a phenomenal stable of collector cars, trucks, vintage race cars, and motorcycles of practically every type, including the '29 Model A roadster built by Boyd Coddington that was named America's Most Beautiful Roadster in 1992. He has participated in motorsports all over the world, including numerous trips to Mexico to race in the famous La Carrera Panamericana, to South Africa for the South African Rally Championship, and to the Bonneville Salt Flats, right here in the U.S., where he drove his Falconer L6-powered "Speed Nymph" streamliner just shy of 350 mph.
Dennis has more checks on his hot rodding bucket list than just about anybody we know. So did you really expect his latest street rod to be something ordinary?
Body Bottom
Any 1951 Studebaker woodie custom could be considered out of the ordinary (how many can you think of?), but Dennis, builder Curt Hill, and the people who had previously helped create this custom woodie, have taken the '51 to an extraordinary level.
This car was under construction when Dennis made the winning bid for it at the auction of the late Joe MacPherson's prized collection. The unfinished project had been started by Doug Carr of Woodn' Carr. It had already been transformed from a sedan to a fastback (based on Thom Taylor's design sketches) and was already a woodie. The top was chopped 2-1/2 inches, and the rear fenders were stretched 18 inches and treated to custom taillight lenses and bezels. The '37 Ford headlights were installed by Steve Davis, who had done some of the early fabrication on the car.
Such an unusual car deserved an equally unique engine. For a while, Dennis considered dropping in a Cadillac engine to create his own version of the Studillac, the Cadillac-powered Stude coupes custom-built in the mid '50s. Then he remembered the one-of-a-kind induction system he'd found at a swap meet decades ago. The mechanical fuel injection system, with wild-looking air bodies, was a prototype created by Propulsion Development Laboratories in the '50s. Everybody had seen it on the cover of Hot Rod magazine in 1959 and nobody had seen it since. The setup is finally in service, feeding a Ford 427 FE engine. Dan Brewer in Torrance, California, did the assembly on the engine and converted the PDL mechanical injection to work with a Hilborn electronic system hidden under the manifold. Edelbrock cylinder heads are topped with Edsel valve covers to replicate the look engine on Hot Rod's cover. The new combination produced 410 hp on the dyno. An adapter fits the Ford to a GM 700-R4 transmission. This is one of the rarest, most unusual engines you'll find in a hot rod, but Dennis is almost nonchalant about it. "Nobody puts Edsels in Studebakers," is what he said.
The interior was entrusted to Sid Chavers in Santa Clara, California. Chavers built custom bucket seats and covered them in tan leather with gray-toned fur inserts. No need to replace the '51 Studebaker dash, so Redline Gauge Works restored the appearance of the factory gauges and updated the internals. A reproduction '54 Stude steering wheel came from Shrock Brothers, which specializes in repro Studebaker parts. Lucky 7 Customs gave the wheel and column their wood grain paint. The perfect accessory to the interior is the set of vintage alligator-grain luggage in the rear deck area, which Dennis found in an antique store in Washington.
The end result is a genuinely unique custom that would probably hover around the top of most people's lists of great Studebakers, great woodies, and great customs.

Distracted, Desperate, Determined [Pt. 1]
Summary: Baxter is having difficulty focusing on his work these days, ever since his seamstress hired a new assistant to help around the office.
Rating: R - Content features heavy themes. Not suitable for most audiences. Consult warnings before proceeding.
Explicit depictions of violence. Reader discretion is highly advised.
Words: 1038
Notes: Don’t be deceived, boo. Things go down fast with this one.
Baxter was a man, distracted.
Distracted. Divided. Not inattentive, but pulled away from his responsibilities by a force he couldn’t name and could not say he cared for, either. He was not a stranger to romantic inclinations, fantasies, sudden flings, slow-burning inclinations that died the moment his attention was called elsewhere. Predictably, the few relationships he allowed himself were short-lived, at best disastrous at worst, but he did not have a problem with that.
If anything, he appreciated it. He had always thought of company as optional, and what little loneliness he was still capable of feeling could be drowned with a generous glass of indulgently expensive wine. He was not one to linger, he tried not to overstay his welcome.
He had been sentimental, once, too emotional for his own good, and he had learned his lesson, he remembers how excruciatingly painful it had been for him to wane himself off that attachment, how far he fled from everything. He did not intend to change. He did not want to change.
Yet, here he was. Back to the same well. Distracted all over again.
He could not think. He could not focus. It was all he could do to look like he might’ve been trying to read the most recent file left on his desk. It was about another tech bro wedding in Santa Clara, the sort of thing that was burdensome and required too much air travel, but that paid his bills for months on end. It was a bunch of invoices, travelling bills, vision photos, proposals, budgets and requests, stuff to sift through and organize. A drag that he probably would have dealt with days ago, if he had been able to concentrate.
He made a half-hearted effort to straighten his back as the door to his office began to open, but Baxter dropped the act quickly, abandoning it completely by the time he heard the sound of heeled boots against hollow tile, caught a glimpse of a familiar, albeit rarely used, catalyst, searched for eyes and found the cover of a thin book. Instead, the lovely face was still buried in some novel as the person stepped through the threshold, not bothering to knock.
It was Jamie Last. He should have known it would be her. Who else did he deserve? Jamie, his in-house seamstress’ new assistant. Jamie, the latest addition to his tight social circle. Jamie, his current, infuriating, unshakable fixation. Jamie, the new employee who had not paid him so much as a passing glance since her arrival, much to his frustration.
She did not look at him. She rarely ever does, but today it hurt more than it usually did, as she dropped another stack of papers onto his desk, letting it replace the greeting she had forgotten to offer.
“Xavier needs you to sign this.” She started, laying out her priorities clearly, a skill that he was beginning to resent. “It’s their bill for their services on the Ackerton wedding last week. They said that, if you don’t want to read it, I’m supposed to look the other way.”
Ah, they must have inflated the numbers a bit, under the guise of a “rush order” expense. Not that they do not have a point on that, as the ludicrous ingredients on the desserts must not have been easy to source. Well, the Ackertons were too wealthy for their own good, they would not mind covering the extra hundreds when he sends them the full bill.
Baxter glanced over the rows of numbers, the messy hand-writing, the columns of meaningless gibberish that blended together into a mess of ink and digits, skipping over black truffles, llama milk and Himalayan salt. He takes their suggestion, scrawling his name across the only blank line. It was a lost cause, especially with her in the room. Especially with her unoccupied hand resting on his desk, her fingertips idly tapping an unsteady rhythm into the wood, and all he could think about was who he would be willing to kill to feel that hand pressed against his cheek.
He considered asking her, for a moment, giving her an order and hoping she would absent-mindedly obey. He is, after all, ultimately her boss, is he not? He thought about touching her, or running his fingers through her hair, or pulling her into his lap and mumbling sweet nothings into her ear until someone else dragged her away.
He thought about a lot of things.
In any case, he actually said, “I take it your silence comes at a price?”
She shoots him a teasing smile. “Do I seem that selfish to you?”
Jamie is selfish. She had to be selfish. If she was not, then, surely, she would have been kind enough to put him out of his misery months ago.
“I like helping people. Just remember this when I need a favour from you.” She laughs, a heavenly sound that sings to his ear like the violin she plays when a contractor bails on them. “Such as when Xavier brings you a thank-you cake.”
“Ah, that’s going to take a while. They’re swamped with work and need no referrals from us.” He went on. “I’m sure we could work something more immediate out between ourselves.”
The young woman is already starting towards the door, calling the conversation to a close before Baxter could begin to finish. In the back of his mind, something flared, the urge to catch her wrist, to go after her, to put himself between her and the only exit and refuse to move until she looked at him. However, he forced it down, swallowing the temptation before it could eclipse his common sense.
He could not be impulsive. He could not make rash decisions. He is not prepared to deal with how difficult that would make things, not now. Not yet.
“Join me for a drink?” He tried, again, attempting to sound unbothered. Nonchalant, casual, normal. Like he was not itching to burn every book she had ever touched. “I know that you don’t have anything better to…”
“Another night, Mr. Ward.”
And just like that, she is gone, leaving his muttered response to echo through his empty office.
“Of course.”

The ensuing existential leads to a rediscovery of what it means to be human, and a new, deeper connection with the owner or, at the owner’s choosing, another human, or any selected self-aware Casey 1 or 2 model (Pro version only).
