The Beautiful $160 Million Oceanfront Santa Barbara Estate
OOne of the largest and most expensive properties in California has just listed for a jaw-dropping $160 million. Dubbed the Sanctuary, the offering is made up of five individual land parcels and has two separate 8,000-square-foot homes.
It’s being shopped by Bruce Kovner, a hedge funder and philanthropist who bought a few acres of land in the area in 2007 and has been slowly assembling the now-22-acre property ever since. He’s spent about $110 million on these acquisitions, according to The Wall Street Journal. The process took around 14 years.
One of the estate’s biggest advantages is its location, as it’s situated right on the Santa Barbara coast with spectacular views of the water and the surrounding mountains. Big, open windows throughout both of the homes (plus the guest house) take full advantage of these vistas.
Outside there’s a pool and adjoining cabana, plus a rose garden and a citrus grove. All of the disparate land parcels are connected by a road, and there’s private beach access as well.
But one of the biggest perks of the Sanctuary isn’t so much what is on the property, but what isn’t. Three out of the five land parcels are largely undeveloped, and the future owner can build additional homes there—or add even more rose gardens, if that’s their thing.
Those who don’t want to totally splurge can break the property up too. One of the homes can be bought separately for $80 million; you’ll even get 10 acres of land with purchase.
If it does sell close to asking, it will be one of the priciest transactions in California (and the larger US) ever. The only one that’s higher is Jeff Bezos’s purchase of the Warner Estate for $165 million last year.
So why is Kovner parting with it? He and his wife are spending more and more time on the East Coast, which means their California digs have been largely vacant as of late. It’s hard to argue with all of the work they put into assembling the place, though, and there’s still plenty that you can add to the property, should you snap it up.

Ellen DeGeneres takes a $27 million trip to Bali by way of Montecito
As we’ve previously discussed on several (many) occasions, Ellen DeGeneres has apparently made it her life’s mission to keep real estate agents in the black — and to own every fancy property from San Pedro to Santa Barbara. You see, our Ms. DeGeneres has an unrequited, well-documented, bonafide real estate obsession. It’s true. Yolanda knows nobody — famous or not — who changes their address more frequently than this lady. By our tally, she bought and/or sold seven different properties in 2018 alone.
Well, at least she’s got good taste. Though we’re not even a full month into 2019, Ms. DeGeneres (and her longtime wife Portia de Rossi) are not resting on their luxury real estate laurels. Records confirm that the couple have just paid a whopping $27,000,000 for a Balinese-influenced bauble tucked into the hills at the far eastern end of tony Montecito.
Despite the big sale price, it appears as though Ms. DeGeneres actually got a deal here — depending on how one looks at it. The property was originally listed for $40 million a year ago before being price-chopped down to its final ask: an even-steven $35 million.
Built in 2011, the structure was custom-designed for a woman from Seattle named Marsha Stroum Glazer. Our Mrs. Glazer — her father was the late entrepreneur Sam Stroum, her sister a former US Ambassador under President Obama — and her husband Jay are renowned art patrons, frequently ranked among the world’s top 200 collectors (according to ARTnews).
Mrs. Glazer made big headlines back in 2005, when she loaned a portion of her “priceless” collection — with pieces by name-brand artists like Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, David Hockney and Jackson Pollock — to UCSB for temporary display. The university had to implement stringent new security precautions — armed guards, video cameras, elaborate motion detection systems — just to accommodate Mrs. Glazer’s mind-blowing haul. But we digress.
The 8.24-acre property is wondrously private, the house tucked behind a long, winding driveway and invisible from the street out front. On first approach, the structure appears to have a mini-pagoda retro sorta-theme, but that notion is quickly dispelled by the entryway: the glassy walls reveal the home’s innards — clearly, this is a contemporary with traditional East Asian accents, not the other way ’round.
Contained within these walls are 5 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, and a mansion-sized 8,188-square-feet of living space. The place appears to have been designed on a limitless budget — which it probably was — with numerous exotic features like bamboo ceilings, flamed black limestone, and distressed oak floors.
The enormous great room contains disappearing walls of glass — on the southern side — to allow easy access to the veranda, with its firepit and al fresco dining area. Below that are acres of expansive lawn and gardens, with skyline views framing the Pacific Ocean.
And yes, this property is a true compound — in addition to the main residence, there’s a guesthouse with two en-suite bedrooms and a kitchen, a detached office, plus a private cabana tucked away by the pool and complete with gym and changing facilities.
Speaking of the pool, it’s a one-of-a-kind basalt pebble infinity number that looks to be a real engineering marvel — just gaze at it thrusting out over the deep blue sea. Wow! Ms. DeGeneres, if you ever need a house-sitter, please give us a ring.
Naturally the entire property is verdantly landscaped with formal gardens and exotic tropical plantings. According to the listing, also included on the estate is a second parcel — “an attached lot” — that offers a “perfect” building site. Perhaps Ms. DeGeneres will construct a spec-mansion there. Or potentially expand the current estate with yet another ancillary structure.
Ms. DeGeneres is a longtime fan of Santa Barbara County, and her new $27 million compound happens to be almost directly directly across the street from another property she owns — a far more modest equestrian ranch that she bought last year (2018) for $6,700,000.
Tumblr media
Ellen’s $6.7 million ranch/farmhouse
And just down the hill from those two estates is the lady’s third Santa Barbara-area home — an $18.6 million contemporary showpiece set right on the Carpinteria sand.

The $18.6 million beach house, Carpinteria
In addition to those residences up north, Ms. DeGeneres and Ms. de Rossi also keep an in-town LA home, a $15 million mid-century modern residence deep within the 90210’s coveted Trousdale Estates enclave.

The $15 million Trousdale spread
Originally built in 1962 by celebrated architect John Elgin Woolf, the single story Beverly Hills casa was revamped in 2017 by noted design firm Marmol Radziner.
2018 was a banner year for Ms. DeGeneres’s real estate ventures — she sold another Montecito spread for $34 million to Netflix bigwig Ted Sarandos and got $35 million cash from billionaire divorcee Sue Gross in Beverly Hills.
Let’s see if she can top those big deals in 2019, shall we?

Lead Edge Capital’s Mitchell Green drops $16 million in Montecito
Don’t call us jet setters — the truth is far, far from that — but we’ve done a small patch of traveling in our time. Despite the allure of more exotic locales, one of our favorite earthly destinations remains the quaint seaside town of Montecito (CA). For any geographically-challenged readers, Montecito is located immediately next door to the equally charming town of Santa Barbara and is about two hours (by car) due northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
With its near-perfect Mediterranean climate and lovely old-world architecture, Montecito makes an ideal vacay getaway. Pop into the many cute shops on Coast Village Road before lunching on steak at Lucky’s or savorin’ sushi at Sakana. Afterwards, grab a drink (or two) at the Honor Bar before embarking on any neighborhood sightseeing. Make sure to hire a designated driver, of course.
Though it’s every bit as expensive as oceanfront cities down south — Malibu and Newport Beach, for example — the vibe in Montecito is significantly different. The homes are more private and set on bigger lots, and the locals significantly less flashy with their wealth. Montecito has also developed a rep as a haven for rich retirees, a population significantly older than folks who crowd those other rich beachy locales.
Yet that old-money Montecito demographic is changing, and younger peeps are now learning to appreciate the area’s hidden charms. Tinder co-founder Sean Rad — he’s in his early 30s — recently paid Ellen DeGeneres $11 million for a rather amazing old ranch. And cosmetics queen Jamie Kern Lima threw down a shocking $35 million just after her 40th birthday. Gwyneth Paltrow is building a big new Montecito house, Ashton Kutcher & Mila Kunis reside just south of town, and we’ve now heard from two different Montecito locals that betrothed actors Eva Mendes & Ryan Gosling have also been house-hunting in the neighborhood.
And as yet another signal of Montecito’s newfound allure for the wealthy young, a glamorous estate up yonder recently sold for $15,850,000. The buyers, we discovered, are a married couple named Mitchell and Lisa Green, both of whom are still in their 30s.
Mitchell Green
Our venture capitalist Mr. Green is a graduate of Wharton — one of the world’s most prestigious b-schools — and is the founder of Lead Edge Capital. Lead Edge, which is headquartered in NYC and has approximately $1.5 billion in assets under management, made its mark investing in startups and growth-stage companies, particularly those in the tech sector. Uber, Alibaba, and Spotify have all benefited from Lead Edge backing, and investors in Mr. Green’s fund have all reaped mega-bucks as the valuations of those firms have soared.
In less than a decade, Mr. Green’s firm has attracted investments from sharks such as Anne Mulcahy, the former chairman and CEO of Xerox; Alison Rosenthal, the former head of mobile at Facebook; Nigel Morris, the cofounder of Capital One; GitHub CEO Nat Friedman; and David Pottruck, the former CEO of Charles Schwab. Helping Mr. Green make those vital connections stemmed — at least partly — from his finance background: he started as an analyst for UBS directly after college, later migrating to Bessemer Venture Partners before earning his MBA while simultaneously working at a Julian Robertson-helmed hedge fund.
And Mr. Green, apparently, was not just twiddlin’ his thumbs while toilin’ away in some dark office — he was out networking and forging connections with industry heavy hitters. But of course, we digress.
The done-done-done Montecito estate home chosen by Mr. and Mrs. Green was originally built in 1996 and last sold in early 2015 for exactly $15 million to Edward & Shari Glazer. Oddly enough, Mr. and Mrs. Glazer — he’s the heir to a billion-dollar conglomerate — almost immediately proceeded to pay another $21,500,000 for the even larger and more lavish estate next door.
We’re not really sure why Mr. and Mrs. Glazer wanted two massive tennis court compounds in Montecito, but the smaller spread was back on the market by summer 2016. Even after an extensive renovation, however, it would be two full years before the home was picked up by the Greens. Given that the property went for less than $16 million and the Glazers spent loads of money upgrading and maintaining the premises — not to mention the cost of taxes and realtor fees — it seems likely they lost some change on this transaction.
Anyway, the 3.6-acre spread is set well back from the main road, down a private road that ends at towering metal gates. From there, the home’s driveway swoops awestruck guests past the tennis court and vast lawns, culminating in a circular motorcourt (ringed by mature date palms) outside the Mediterranean-themed mansion.
The front door opens to a double-height foyer with sightlines through the Palladian-ish windows to the Pacific Ocean by the horizons. Interiors here are done up in a chic and comfortable (if slightly generic) manner with a neutral color scheme. Most of the formal rooms have fireplaces, and all sport oversized windows and glassy doors designed to draw in the SoCal sunlight.
The kitchen is outfitted with a blazingly expensive SubZero fridge (seriously, that thing can cost more than a new Camry), and all the other appliances are equally swanky, too. We’re sure the housekeeper and/or chef will appreciate that. But more importantly (at least to the homeowners) is a delightful outdoor dining area with ocean and backyard views.
The 10,112-square-foot main house includes 5 spacious bedrooms and 8 baths. As y’all should expect, there’s a sitting area and a fireplace in the master suite. French doors and a private balcony accentuate the head-on ocean views. Somewhere also inside there’s an attic that’s been converted into a media/games room.
Out back, hidden from the pool/tennis court areas behind tall hedges and trees, is a discreet guest house that’s perfect for a live-in groundskeeper (which an estate of this magnitude probably requires).
Though the home’s interiors are perfectly nice and luxurious, the real star of this show is the backyard. We counted at least three formal fountains, exquisite formal rose gardens, and numerous sculpted hedges that ring the entire estate. Plus there’s a pool area with an adjacent cabana and 360-degree views of the ocean, surrounding treetops, and the fire-ravaged mountains.
Mr. & Mrs. Green are still (relatively) young, but this ain’t their first time on the Montecito real estate rodeo. Back in 2015, they paid just over $8.1 million for a “starter” estate that’s only a quick skip away from the new house. Since August (2018), their starter home has been listed for sale with a $10,250,000 asking price.
As y’all can see, the Greens clearly go in for a specific type of house. Their old place is basically a smaller version of the new $16 million estate — it’s got a similar Mediterranean-style main structure with clean-lined, contemporary interiors. There’s a long driveway that leads past formal lawns and the pool area before ending at a motorcourt, and there’s also a guesthouse. Heck, the place even has nearly-identical walkway stairs lined by formal rose gardens.
The Greens have established themselves as noted philanthropists in the Santa Barbara area and will be hosting their annual Halloween charity gala next week. For any Montecito locals, tickets are still available for the spooky bash, which Yolanda assumes will be hosted at their new estate. And if y’all like the look of their old house and have the necessary funds, do let Mr. and Mrs. Green know. We’re sure they’d be happy to give you a private tour of the premises.

Where to Drink and Dine Poolside in NYC
Tumblr media
While beach eats have improved exponentially in recent years, so too have the offerings at the city’s numerous, high-end hotel pools, multiple stories above the city.  So if you’re looking to stretch out on a chaise surrounded by skyline, you might as well visit a spot that’s put actual effort into their food and drink program — by installing an ambitious coastal Mexican grill (Hotel Americano in Chelsea), and hiring elite chefs like Andrew Carmellini (Brooklyn’s the William Vale).
The William Vale
111 N 12th St Williamsburg,New York 11249
(718) 307-7100
Andrew Carmellini and the NoHo Hospitality Group oversee all the food and drink offerings at Williamsburg’s East River-abutting, modernist hotel; an even more appealing feature than the 60-foot long pool itself (i.e., the longest outdoor pool in NYC).  Which means, you’ll likely spend more time lounging outside the water than doing laps, thanks to Baby Gem Caesar Salads, Grilled Chicken Sandwiches with harissa and gruyere, Aperol Spritzes and Southside Fizzes, made with vodka, mint, seltzer and lime.

So, you definitely don’t want to make the faux pas of wearing a swimsuit to this super chic, in demand Pool.  Though technically, there is a tiled body of water anchoring the center of the opulent, newly revived, Major Food Group-fronted restaurant in the Seagram Building (née The Four Seasons) and it does boast pretty much the very best food you’re likely to find poolside.  Think Caviar service, Foie Gras “ribbons,” Whole Fish, Surf and Turf, Octopus a la Plancha and Santa Barbara sea urchin toast.
