One more photo from Sanssouci Palace and Park in Potsdam, Germany. Sanssouci was the summer residence of Frederick the Great, the king of Prussia, and was completed 1745 in the Rococo style. By the way, the name Sanssouci means no worries or carefree which reflects the need of Frederick the Great for a place to relax. Sanssouci is positioned on a terraced hill located in the middle of the park. My photo shows the South facing facade of the palace. Directly below it Frederick the Great created his own vineyard on six terraced levels. How eccentric is that? In my photo you see parts of the first level terrace. The terraces have a convex shape to maximize sunlight and the vines were planted against the brick walls to maximize warms. In the niches in between the vines figs were grown. I want to wish all my American followers a happy 4th of July. My husband and I are taking it slow this 4th of July weekend. We enjoyed a surprise firework that could be seen from our living room yesterday night, had a fabulous long breakfast together this morning, and this afternoon we will induce in a 4th of July cake that my husband lovingly baked yesterday already. In between we need to tidy up and clean the house as we are having guest over for dinner tomorrow. 🇬🇧 Surrounded by fine cedar wood, decorated with filigree vine leaves and bronze flowers, the library in Sanssouci Palace exudes the aura of a king who read French philosophers and surrounded himself with contemporary literature in peace and quiet - Frederick the Great. No one else was allowed to enter this retreat except Frederick himself and his faithful valet. A place that unites history and art in perfect harmony. While Sanssouci is in the more intimate Rococo style and is far smaller than its French Baroque counterpart, it too is notable for the numerous temples and follies in the park. The palace was designed/built by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff between 1745 and 1747 to fulfill King Frederick's need for a private residence where he could relax away from the pomp and ceremony of the Berlin court. The palace's name emphasises this; it is a French phrase (sans souci), which translates as "without concerns", meaning "without worries" or "carefree", symbolising that the palace was a place for relaxation rather than a seat of power. This photo was taken on our last trip to Germany in the extensive park of the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. I love the calm and peacefulness that it radiates. The beautiful yellow irises and grasses in the foreground, the ornate black bridge in the middle ground and the mature trees in the background. Nothing screams at you for attention, it is just a harmonious well balanced scene I feel it can deliver a lot of inspiration for any private garden, even though you would most likely realize some of the ideas it suggests on a much smaller scale, of course. If you are ever in Potsdam, Germany, I highly recommend a visit to this park. It is truly a work of art! The palace itself is also very lovely outside and inside. I can’t believe it is the first of July already, today. Half of the year 2021 is over. Looking back I haven’t made as much progress in my own garden as I wanted to. Anybody else is in that boat? I think I will sit down this weekend and make a game plan for the second half of this year with defined goals and deadlines when to reach them.
