I remember seeing the concept art for Wish, when it was originally a fantasy romance, and it looked so cute and lively! All the magic and colour was bled out of it and the main girl was yet another clone of Rapunzel in terms of being (endearingly) socially awkward—Rapunzel was made to be different, but then, she was copied to death.

I was feeling nostalgic about my first special interest, The Little Mermaid (my dad bought Ariel's Story Studio while on a business trip to the States, and gifted to me when I was eight and loved the sea and swimming—Ariel and mermaids captivated me for the next ten years!), I looked through merch (I used to collect TLM and mermaid stuff in general as a kid) and while there were some creative things still (like this beautifully sculpted snow globe/music box with Ariel admiring the dancing couple on one of her music boxes and this really imaginative and fun pin of Ariel and Eric riding Stormy, a wild giant seahorse Ariel identified with in the TV series as he was kept tied down by her father, described as "too wild to time and too ornery to love"—her dad was right that riding him was dangerous, but Stormy did care for Ariel), a lot of even the merch felt so boring, without real variation, cut-and-paste official art. Hardly any theme or creativity to it. They hardly ever make new artwork with new poses, it gets so boring to look at. It's just. Things. With the same standard handful of artwork reprinted a million times, often in the same standard (washed-out) colours.

Even merchandising driven companies like Sanrio (which absolutely has a problem of reusing the same stock poses/art a ton, but they often dress the characters up or arrange them in new scenes, there's fun gimmicks, and there's still all new art sometimes!) and the Pokemon Company (which does a much better job, I think, of having plenty of merch with other than stock art slapped on it, especially the Pokemon Center plushies and TCG sleeves and stationary and things, lots of all new art there)... both companies do plenty of collaborations too!

The most interesting merch I can see for Ariel and Disney in general is more collaborations... like the Tsum-Tsums. Those were cute.

so, the other company is bringing something new to the table. Disney Japan does way more new artwork for merch, sure, sometimes it's a little too markedly anime-esque and not distinctly Disney's house style, but there's also more western/Disney styled merch like this very cute Ariel kissing Flounder on the cheek pin I saw yesterday! It's charming and blushing Flounder is too cute for words. It gave me something new to look at! I love how Ariel's long hair spirals into curls and hearts. It's refreshing and fun!

Even compared to other companies focused on branding and merchandise... Disney in its home country seems to play it too safe and is scared of doing anything that could be miscontrued as creative.
