Thanks to @stellaepluviae bringing up this fabulous idea, I dug out my Instax Share 2 printer and went to town.

The wet Arthur one (^_-) with the water bubbles was actually the first one I printed and a happy accident! But it’s my favorite and instantly got attached to my current daily purse!

Not sure who else to to print for the last five exposures, maybe Victor or Elbie from IkeVil 🖤

Blood Dupre & Elliot March were kind of a test print, but also like Blood was the biggest otome crush of my teens and still will not let my heart go ♥️

I've got into Aruani recently, and they're sooooooooo gooood, the best ship, and I was curious, do you have anything AruAni merch related? Like zine, keychains, stickers, postcards? If no, from what artist would you like to have some? (if you see this question on others blog, it's just me asking my favourite bloggers)

2. Sir, It's Time : this is an anthology focuses on ambassador Aruani. This project is a kind of collaboration between Japanese and overseas artists and writers, so it's available in 2 languages, Japanese and English.

uh, i read ur post about mdzs merch. thanks for sharing, i didn't know there was something like that. but like i'm also a bit confused because i thought all fanmerch is by definition illegal/not-allowed by the copyright holder, no? what canons allow fanmerch to be sold for money/profits?

Not to worry! This is a super confusing area that as an artist and fanartist I think i can explain fairly easily.

So depending on copyright law for your country and how you claim copyright TECHNICALLY yes. Its technically not legal. But that’s mostly to do with things like...If I made a sticker out of the starbucks logo without changing it at all in any way (non-transformative works) and sold it for my own profit. That takes money away from Starbucks and they have legal rights to sue me for selling their merchandise. If I make a sticker of the starbucks mermaid going “I got an addiction problem” and its completely my own design but its obviously still the Starbucks mermaid that’s then left up to Starbucks themselves to decide if they want to fight a small fry or not. Since the newer sticker is more along the lines of satire and obviously Starbucks can’t really sell that the art, since its my own design, is under my copyright. Its not LICENSED which is a whole other ball game but the art still is mine.

There was a time where Disney was the hardest fighter over their works and they completely fucked the copyright system to make sure they never lost Mickey to public domain which is WILD since they seem to not be very pressed over people doing art, selling art and doing new designs for the Disney Princesses, Marvel and Star Wars. Arguably their biggest money making merch right? Well from what I’ve noticed with Disney is that it would be too difficult to knock down every single thing so they pick their battles. Like Baby Yoda became something they didn’t want people to make stuff of (people did it anyway). 

Mostly when its a Big Company vs Fanartist at an Artist Alley or Small Etsy-like shop the Bigger Companies usually use it as free advertisement. Dreamworks has their own artist alley day at the studio. So for Big Companies it depends.

There are some bigger companies, Sanrio for example, that will COME AFTER YOU if you sell fanmerch. Aggretsuko was very popular but since its a easier target to manage people were warned DO NOT FUCK WITH SANRIO.

And that takes us to smaller companies or smaller authors/artists/podcast performers. Since the profit from smaller companies like this is much smaller (Disney will still make Billions a day even if you sell thousands of dollars worth of iron man pillows or you made a couple hundred off of an Ariel sticker) its usually best to find out first if its okay to do that.

Welcome to Nightvale had a lot of fan merch going around until they asked artists to stop selling art so they wouldn’t lose profit. I think Homestuck had the same thing after it blew up all over artist alleys/etsys and they asked for the same. Cuphead outright said DO NOT MAKE FAN MERCH. These are smaller companies that can be technically very affected by fan merch sales. Personally I think its kind of...a shame to take this stance because its other small time artists that are making money and its free advertisement. But I get the idea why they would say no.

In terms of MDZS, I’m not sure on the specifics but it might have been a direct request from the author OR specifically a Chinese copyright issue. If someone knows the actual reason why please feel free to let me know. There are also some issues with censorship that might be a factor with MDZS. Making fanart is totally cool especially if we’re in another country but if that affects the author then we’ve lost a really great creator. 

Typically when an author or a smaller company says “Please do not make merch or buy fan merch” there’s usually a reason behind it and its not really a legal issue as much as it is an issue of respecting the creator’s wishes. When the creators aren’t really clear or specific its a judgement call. 

We all want to buy merch of the thing we love, support artists and original creators but sometimes you do have to be careful to make sure you aren’t stepping on the wrong person’s toes. There’s nothing STOPPING you from buying fan merch from a series that the creator has asked not to have fan merch made of but it would be chill and cool vibes if you didn’t.

In terms of MDZS there are a lot of fans who have found work arounds to make fan merch bc they love the series they would rather trade or just have people pay the cost of production and shipping. So I’d definitely look into those

Hiya! Your arts really cool, but you mention on your aggretsuko art that you plan on making them tee shirts and stickers and I just wanna warn you to be careful! Sanrio is super stringent on people selling fanmerch of their stuff it seems and I'd hate for you to get into legal trouble.

hey!! so you’re the third person and counting who’s told me about Sanrio’s notorious litigiousness, and i really appreciate the heads up!! It’s really sweet of y’all to be looking out for me like this!!

the stickers and the like will probably be mostly at the cons i have this year, and on the other places i sell things that are, say, a website where you can post designs publicly, i’m going to be very euphemistic in titling and in tags as to avoid such detection, and that’s worked pretty well so far with a couple other things!

Cosplaying for profit is also not allowed. Perhaps a lot are used to how Western fandom doesn’t care much about IP laws but the context here are China’s own laws plus repercussions when something that’s already viewed as “not aligned” with whatever the country is teaching is put into more spotlight (big pointy fingers on MDZS and SV novels getting locked in JJWXC). While there are some copyright holders that are more lenient on it (eg some Japanese publishers who are chill with doujins, etc) and some even allow it (iirc FFXIV does but they’re specific on what kind) and some that outright sues (eg Sanrio), the same isn’t sure about JJWXC. It’s not just about the merch itself but also what it could entail to the creator (reminder that while it may be safe elsewhere for something as “small” as gay fanmerch, the same is not true for CN).

Anyway, iirc JJWXC also has 5 year hold so for those that have passed the threshold, fanmerch are already being done (eg some of priest’s old works). Additionally, if certain fandoms can follow the creator’s wishes like Undertale by Toby Fox, then I see no reason why we can’t simply respect something the creator themselves have already personally requested.

EDIT: Preempting stuff based from experience haha but note that I’m not interested in arguing with anyone so I’m leaving this response as my final say as well. At the end of the day, no one can control you but you.

new mdzs fan here! why are fans not allowed to sell their fan merchs? i saw some call it p4p??? how does that work?

Because it’s part of JJWXC’s (MXTX’s publisher) rules: see here and here. 

And p4p (pay-for-production meaning there’s no profit but cost for expenses including shipping, etc is the final price) depends per artist but they’d post an announcement that they’re going to hold p4p and there’s usually a cap on maximum orders they’re getting and you sign up for it on the days and time allotted by the artist. Then they send confirmation on whatever email you used, send you invoice, you pay via paypal (most often than not), you wait for production of the merch to finish, you wait for shipping, and basically like that. Anyhow, the artist will always post their own rules anyway so be sure to check it out.
