on march 19 i made the very loooong train journey up to hida-takayama via nagoya! i’m not a fan of flying, so i intentionally chose to deal with the longer journey. 

i made takayama city my base for the trip, which i think was a good choice in the end. my first day was entirely travel, but i still managed to take a little walk around the area and familiarize myself with the area a little bit. it was kind of nice to see the old parts of the city without people because it was almost dark. everything was closed, so the walk was really peaceful.

on the 20th i spent the day walking around takayama’s old town area. the main draw for takayama is its old town area, which is full of shops and homes preserved from the edo period. there are tons of souvenir shops, sake breweries, museums, restaurants, and private homes in the area that you can explore! i think the southern half of the old town is the most interesting, especially the sannomachi street. that part of the told town is pretty busy. the northern part is also interesting, but it’s a lot less busy. in the northern part you can actually go into a couple of the preserved houses, like kusakabe house (which i went into) and yoshijima residence. 

i started off at takayama jinya, the edo period government headquarters for the hida region, and then moved north through sannomachi and into the northern part. on the way there i visited the takayama history and art museum, stopped into a bunch of shops, and ate a hida beef bun for lunch. i went inside the kusakabe house in the northern part, and kept on going until i found a giant torii! that leads to sakurayama hachinmangu, which is also where the yatai kaikan (festival float) museum is. the museum there contains four festival floats used in the twice yearly takayama festival. there is an english audio guide available. the shrine itself is really pretty, set back up against a wooded hill. i finished the day off with a visit to kokubunji, a temple with a 1250 year old ginko tree.

on the 21st i just leisurely walked around old town again and tried exploring more of the side streets. i had already basically seen most of what i wanted to see the previous day, so it was a pretty chill time. i did get to go to the morning markets though, on shimosannomachi street and in front of takayama jinya. there are a lot of wood goods available in takayama because of the hida no takumi -- wood carpenters. i also visited the takumi warehouse which sells wood crafts from different carpenters. the only thing i could afford there was a coaster haha. i had no idea takayama was known for its woodworking!

on the 22nd i hopped on a bus and took an hour long ride to shirakawa-go, a unesco world heritage site in addition to gokayama.

shirakawago is known for its unique architecture called gasshozukuri, or constructed like hands in prayer. the houses there are built without nails and are up to approximately 250 years old. they used to be lived in, and are able to withstand the harsh winters and heavy snowfalls of the mountains there, but now most of the houses, at least in ogimachi, have been turned into museums and restaurants.

i had four hours in shirakawago, so i immediately headed toward wada house, which is a house owned by the wada family which has been turned into a museum showcasing what the house looked like when it was still being lived in. after that, i made my way through the village to the gasshozukuri minkaen, or the open air museum. a bunch of houses were transplanted there and turned into various educational museums, showcasing how the houses were built, how they were lived in, etc etc. the open air museum area was gorgeous.

i tried to go up to the shiroyama observatory but i missed the bus and couldn’t manage to climb up myself (darn fear of heights), so i ended up going back into the village and exploring more of the side streets. i found myozenji temple and a really cool folk craft museum that showcased fabric, wood, pottery, and paper crafts made in the area.

shirakawago was really pretty with all of the snow, but i kind of wish i had gone in full winter or full spring to experience the snowy thatched roofs or the green surroundings.

all in all, my visit was really amazing. i got to see some tall, snowcapped mountains and some unique history. i really love the area and if i had more time i would be interested in going in other seasons just to see what it’s like when it comes alive with green in summer and orange in fall.
