my man drumstick has been alone for a while after watching all of his hens murdered in front of him, one by dogs the other by...uh. well i don't know she just disappeared. i had been looking for hens i would actually want to keep, ie a white egg layer since i don't have one right now, but alas. he just needed girls. the co-op had three in their bird coops so i took em home.
cochin crosses? orpingtons? who knows. they are cute and chubby though but i don't need/want more brown eggs 馃槱
#club sunshine#drumstick#i don't tag hens anymore only roosters lol it's just...not worth it#sanjak longcrower

I鈥檓 looking into getting some hatching eggs from a place not too far from here that seems really good, they have lots of rare and cool breeds.their website says they鈥檙e sold out of Faverolles but I鈥檒l call tomorrow and find out if they鈥檒l have them anytime soon, otherwise I鈥檓 looking at Bielefelders, Heritage Plymouth Rocks, Swedish Flower Hens, and Hedemoras, or maybe even Hmong chickens! I鈥檓 interested in these landrace breed that they have, since the chicks would likely hatch with a nice variety of colors, patterns, shapes, and features which I really like in my flock. They鈥檙e not cheap, but since I can drive there I鈥檇 save on shipping (it鈥檚 probably safer for the eggs too) and I鈥檇 really like to move away from hatchery birds and get more high-quality, healthy and friendly birds.
#they have super cool breeds like sanjak longcrowers and lyonnaises and icelandics#all which sound cool but are more expensive#the Hmong chickens sound so fascinating and look so pretty I鈥檓 seriously considering them#oh they also have Fauvacanas which are crosses between Ameracaunas and Faverolles!#they鈥檙e super cute but apparently shier than Faverolles so idk

bad photos of fancy chickens
(top to bottom: Ayam Ketawa (laughing chicken), Sanjak Longcrower, Svart H枚na (swedish black chicken)
#my pets#birds#club sunshine#the svart boys got frostbite on their combs last winter; they have large standard combs in reality#i don't usually have frost issues with them but those guys were born in california so had big floppy combs#i tried to keep an eye out for frostbite because i knew they would be prone but unfortunately i didn't see it#because their combs are already black :(#so they're a little derpy. they're also scraggly bc they were being bullied at their old home#they're actually looking VERY nice now! only a few messed up feathers left to moult

four goose eggs went into the machine, two were empty at two and a half weeks, one stopped developing at three, and now the last one has been in lockdown for like four days and nothing is happening
last year all my eggs would die right before they hatched, developed until the eggs turned dark and then never emerged. i bought a new incubator and i'm having the same goddamn problem over again
i am never going to be able to repopulate my sanjaks are i
#ag talk#i ma genuinely so frustrated by this#i don't know what i'm doing wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!#i had tons of amazing hatches in the old machine and then suddenly they all started dying. i'm at a loss#i lost my sanjak longcrower hens last fall to someone's stupid dog that got loose and attacked them and my poor rooster is all alone#but i'm not paying $80+ a carton for more sanjak eggs just for them all to die#i lost so much money last year to that :/#like those three sanjaks i had in the first place were the only three to even hatch out of two failed batches of eggs
