Finished reading A Magical Girl Retires by Park Seolyeon and thought I'd share the inside cover illustration by Kim Sanho.

If you like stories that deal with magical girls trying to solve environmental problems, combined with a tale about a depressed millennial trying to find her place in the world, it's a pretty good read. (Content warning, though: the beginning involves attempted suicide, but the whole story isn't particularly gritty, in my opinion).

story & setting: i was not expecting the extreme tonal shift from “fangirl child-raising romcom” to “we’re all trapped in a ceaseless tormentous nightmare of sin and death, let’s kill god” but things do tend to escalate. it leans heavily into its magical/theological/philosophical themes and is very complex, but the recap chapters help tremendously

the art: it’s pretty standard fare with some quirks. if you don’t like it early on, give it like 30-40 chapters to settle and shake itself out. i’m fond of the big beautiful eyes personally. and the family just looks so good together
