“The youth is the hope of the nation” this statement is quoted by our very own National Hero, Jose P. Rizal and is being popularized. Indeed!  Where we all started to become leaders? It is of being a kid and being improved when we became youth.  Youth are raised to be the next leaders of not just the barangay, the city, province or nation, but of the world.

Abolish the SangguniangKabataan? A big NO. The youth themselves are powerful. You might think that they have not much experience to understand the world, but they are adventurous enough to discover more about the world. Youth must have the voice of their own to have their contribution to the world and not just waiting for what adults will do for them. Each and every one of us has the capability to change the world. Even little hands can hold bigger things and in fact, not all elders can handle a big responsibility.

We cannot sign contracts because we are minors, so it’s the barangay chairman who does it for us. Pagyungkapitan may gustongpabor, iniipityung SK at hindimagbibigay ng budget. Kawawang SK walangmagawakundipumayagnalang,” laments Cajes, 20.

This statement is not enough to say that SK should be abolished, because not all of the youth are their dignity are to be paid off by money. Let’s also consider the fact that this issue is not just about the youth but of the society as a whole.

“I believe that all SK officials are mostly academic achievers. When they run in the SK they know the responsibilities that go with it. Usually, we sacrifice our studies to be able to serve our constituents. ‘Yung school andiyanlangyan. Hindi kami iiwan. Pero yung SK tatlongtaonlang kami magsasakripisyo para matulunganangkapwa naming kabataan,” says Cajes, a senior European Studies student at the Ateneo de Manila University. She has taken a leave of absence from AdMU to concentrate on her task as SKNF president, but is taking courses at the UP Open University.

This manifest that youth are willing to sacrifice their own other priorities to serve the society.

Let us also look unto the real situation. Who are most likely to participate in volunteer works? It is the youth.

Abolishing SK won’t mitigate the problems in our society. Instead, it will discourage the youth for not giving importance to their service to the society and the government. There are so many of the youth who has potentials to become leader of the whole group and even contribute to the society as a whole
