Thinking about how Sang Yan and Wen Yifan isn't just a couple in a romantic sense, but is also each other's best friends
Thinking about how this drama is about two best friends who became ex bestfriends, reunited as strangers with history, became housemates then lovers
Tumblr media
Thinking about how Wen Yifan was a loner in high school. She only got close with Zhong Si Qiao after highschool even though they did know each other back then
Maybe because of her bleak home life and her introvertedness, Wen Yifan was more comfortable with being alone even in a crowd of people.
Thinking about how Sang Yan said he volunteered instead of being chosen by her dad; and we learn from his flashback he fell for her at first sight and basically became the puppy that followed her everywhere
Thinking about how if Sang Yan hadn't doggedly (yes pun intended) insist on crossing into the barrier that she puts up that even most girl friends didn't cross, then Wen Yifan would've been even lonelier. The worst kind of loner is the lonely one
Thinking about Sang Yan who learned that this girl he has a crush on hid so many secrets and sadness that he didn't know how to broach, so he settled on being there for her no matter what-- he was the closest friend Wen Yifan had in highschool, but not in those terms that he knew everything about her or she everything about him either, but in that they both share an aptitude for companionable silence, being around each other without the burden of talking, being there as an assurance that the other person is seen, that they both just enjoy each other's company, celebrating every milestone as students that they passed in highschool
Thinking about how Sang Yan after their friendship breakup said that he couldn't fall in love with anyone else anyway so if he couldn't be with Wen Yifan in one way, he could try to be there for her in other ways. He had made a promise to be there for her and he wanted to keep that

He Built Her a Place to Rest
“He built the dream she whispered in a moment of pain — and waited, without asking, until she was ready to come home to it.” — a love that never left.
🍜 for the ones who never stopped loving a reflection on the noodle shop, the boy, the heartbreak, and the bar called Overtime.
There’s a dream she once spoke of. A dream whispered in the lull between pain and healing, in the safety of a boy’s presence — a boy who always showed up.
Wen Yifan didn’t dream of riches or fame. She dreamed of a noodle shop. Not the kind you rush into on your lunch break, but the kind you walk into when life has worn your soul thin.
A place where no one asks you to leave. Where you don’t just eat — you breathe again. Where adult office-goers uncoil from their exhaustion, old folks speak in slow stories over tea, and children do homework under golden lights and warm smells.
She shared this with Sang Yan — the boy who kept showing up. Week after week, city after city, not because he knew what haunted her (because she never told him), but because he knew she was hurting.
He never asked questions. He just arrived — and that was enough.
But when grief and trauma twist themselves into your identity, you start believing you are unworthy of soft things. So Wen Yifan broke her own heart and his too — not because she stopped loving him, but because she thought he deserved someone untouched by darkness.
She ran. Far enough to disappear. And yet, he never once hated her.
Years passed. Love aged in silence. And somewhere in that stretch of time, Sang Yan opened a restaurant-bar.
He called it Overtime.
It wasn't just a name. It was a promise. A love letter.
It echoed her dream — that noodle shop for the weary. He built it not for profit, but for peace. For the strangers who needed rest. For the girl who once dreamed it aloud when she had no safe place to land.
Even when she was gone, even when he had no idea if she’d ever return, he remembered.
Because when love is real — when it roots itself in care, not possession — it doesn't vanish. It adapts. It creates. It honors.
And when Wen Yifan returned eight years later — older, freer, scarred but surviving — there it was. Her dream, standing tall. Not in her name, but in her spirit. Made real by the boy who never stopped loving her.
Sometimes the loudest love isn't the one that chases. It's the one that waits. That builds soft places for you in your absence. That keeps the light on in case you ever find your way home again.
— Annasophia Park for the dreamers, the builders, the ones who remember.

Yknow as much as i dislike how the drama diverted from the novel, it's mainly because...well, it's a skill issue on my part lmao. I really can't watch any stories that separate the couple after they've gotten together.
The novel certainly dealt with it all differently, and I much prefer that because I feel too much of their second hand pain so I really rather wait it out for the happier time
But when you think about why Wen Yifan did what she did. It is understandable.
I suppose we can look at it as, the two ways things could've gone. In the novel, The Bastard didn't try to frame Sang Yan's restaurant.
He only went after Yifan and Sang Yan in a way that doesn't really affect Sang Yan, by not paying when he's ordered so much drinks, harassing Yifan etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She really doesn't want anything to hurt Sang Yan in any way. She didn't really care about her own wellbeing. She wanted SY to stay safe.
Remember she said he should stay happy and he deserves all the good things? I'm paraphrasing, you get it lol. For Yifan, who's traumatized and never been prioritized by her family, she is like a stain in SY life if his life becomes endangered.
Yes, harassing Yifan is monstrous but I think she much rather go through that alone than have something actually affect Sang Yan. It's when something like this happens that she gets so scared for Sang Yan and feels inferior.
Idk how to tell you the inferior feeling of not wanting to 'infect' the people that you love with the horrible people that you know. Iykyk.
Even from the beginning, without knowing what happened to her, Yifan's first knee jerk reaction was always to not be a 'bother' to other people-- if she could do everything on her own, she would. She's too independent because she wasn't prioritized by her own mother, and she had to fend for herself from a young age.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When she was asking if it's okay for her to stay in the apartment, her first question was about what SY felt about it, if it doesn't bother him.
Yes she was healing and extending her hand, to make an effort, to make SY knows that he is also loved by her,, but she's not completely healed, isn't she? She's trying, yes. But these things take time. It's not easy to get over a lifetime of trauma.
I cannot for the life of me understand why some people basically say she's being ungrateful to SY smh. SY never asked for a payback. He simply loves her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh also, since I'm already deepdiving into it, my theory with her always looking at the clock? Because subconsciously when you're a trauma survivor, you're anxious about the happiness finally running out, being happy feels like a miracle-- do I really deserve being loved and cared for by all these people, she said.
I don't remember if she said this in the drama or only in the novel, but she said something along the lines of, what if SY finally sees that she's nothing after they get together.
It's an accumulation of insecurity, not healed yet trauma, self preservation and survival instinct
Some stories like to portray that love heals all, probably true. But realistically, any kind of healing takes time. And sometimes patients are known to go back into their shells.

everytime we got a flash back after the Hong Kong saga was Yifan going to therapy. It was awkward as fuck at first like blood from stone getting her to talk about anything. But it's slow going and she's getting better. There is also couples therapy with SY because lord knows they need it.

I was so SO incredibly touched by this scene, got teary eyed and everything because how pure and unconditional truly is Sang Yan's love. And it makes me so happy to know that Yifan finally knows how deeply and unwaveringly she's loved by him.
