Pokémon Care Guide #11, The Sandshrew Line
Evolution Method: Battle Experience.
Alternate Evolution Method (Alolan): Elementally Charged Stone (Ice)
The Sandshrew line is a mammalian Pokémon of either the ground typing or the ice and steel typing, depending on the climate that they hatch in and the parent Pokémon. Kantonian Sandshrew live inside large tunnel systems to protect themselves from desert heat, while Alolan Sandshrew live in harsh mountainous regions full of ice and snow. Though not a poison type, they do have mildly venomous claws that should be treated with care.
Sandshrew subsist on a diet of mainly bugs and grubs that they dig up from the sand or snow and then lap up with their long sticky tongues. Like most Pokémon, they also eat berries occasionally. They naturally retain a lot of water in their bodies to survive their harsh environments and are able to survive without any source of water for long periods of time. In fact, they have a strong dislike for water and will avoid it when possible besides drinking. Most of the moisture they retain is from the food that they eat, and they thus need a diet of insects rather than any sort of Pokéchow, though it can be supplemented with wet Pokémon food for insectivores.
Healthy members of this line will regularly shed their claws to grow new ones, the claws sometimes being collected and reused as farming equipment or other tools by Indigenous people. These quills and claws should grow back within a day or two if they are healthy. Once a year, Sandslash will also shed their quills for new ones to grow to replace them. They will be irritable and itchy during this time. Alolan Sandslash does not do this. Both forms should have smooth and sharp quills and claws, if they are too rough or chipped it means they are experiencing too much humidity.
Sandshrew and Sandslash should be supplied with pools of sand to “sandbathe” themselves. This allows them to both sharpen their claws and be rid of any parasites and dirt. Alolan varieties can do the same with ice chips. Kantonian members of this line require very low humidity and make hard pets to keep unless one already lives in an arid location, while alolan varieties are difficult to keep unless you live in an area already in perpetual winter. Despite this, they are actually quite common as farm Pokémon as they can easily be trained to till fields.
Sandslash like to be somewhere high up to sleep, either in trees or atop icebergs.
The Sandshrew line, while making difficult pets, can make great battling companions when they are kept in climate controlled Pokéballs. They are extremely agile in battle despite their bulk, and can swipe at opponents for a high amount of damage. Kantonian varieties are also quite common, so they can make very good first caught Pokémon for beginner trainers.

Sandshrew are small shrew-like omnivores that dot the deserts of the world. They're non-hostile solitary creatures that are commonly seen due to being one of the few things that willingly braves the desert day. Their backs and tails are covered in a brickwork pattern of armored scales, which allows them to curl into balls for total defense. When travelling through familiar territory they tend to curl like this to travel at high speeds and hunt down termite mounds. At night they return to their burrow to dig or rest. If it's too far they will dig a new nest. Their armor is very porous and allows them to gather moisture from the air, so they hide at night to prevent overhydration from dew.
At age 7 a sandshrew's armor will begin to grow out into spines and their claws will begin to grow at a much more rapid rate, entering a stage known as sandslash. The goblin sized creature no longer stays in burrows, instead widening its territory towards the edges of the desert and staying in trees at night. They still curl into balls for offense and defense, but now prefer to run. Sandslash are considerable more aggressive, and are just as likely to leap and a threat and start slashing as they are to run. They continue their solitary life style, meeting only to mate. The single resulting sandshrew will stay with their mother for the first 6 months before setting off on its own. They live up to 40 years, but in the wild will typically live to 25 Draconic rampages, eruptions, cataclysmic flood. It takes a lot to drive a moisture-hating burrower with SAND in its name out of the desert, especially to a high snowy mountain. In some regions however, this is what happened. Somehow, the cold unlocked an innate magical spark within them. As they burrowed through the snow, young sandshrew found their armored brickwork hardening as snow grafted to their plates. While the armor was like metal, it became inflexible, stopping them from curling into balls. Instead they burrow at sight of a predator, clinging to the ground with their claws and leaving nothing exposed. If hunting or defending themselves, these "Alolan sandshrew" will instead hurl themselves at high speed, using their armor as a blunt weapon.
Alolan sandshew (why is it not snowshrew?) mature into Snowslash (I'm calling it that now and you can't stop me). Snowslash find thier packed snow armor hardening into massive spikes of ice that rise eye level with your average elf. They sprint across the icy mountain tops, curved foot long claws finding traction anywhere. While they will scurry up trees for fruits and pine cones when able, they are still omnivores and those steely claws are used for offense just as easily. Unlike their sandy ancestors snowslash have small litters of 3-6. The female will typically drive off the male to ensure the territory has the food to support her new family. While the litter will wander off at around 7 months, they will stay together until they are fully grown themselves.

Krenko’s Guide to Pokemon: Mr. Line
“If a tree falls in the woods, and nobody is around to hear it, and it hits a mime, does anyone care?” ~ Gary Larson
DESIGN
Mime Jr.’s actually pretty cute, looking like a tiny little silly clown. The design is a bit generic but also very effective, making it a creature with just enough clown parts so that you know it’s a clown without so many clown parts to look terrifying. It also manages to look a lot like one of those clown-faced ice creams you can get at some places, where the cone is upside down as a hat. The point is, Mime Jr. is a small, cute pokemon that works perfectly fine.
Next is “Kantonian” Mr. Mime, and I put that in quotes because this Pokemon isn’t actually Kantonian. As with Farfetch’d, Mr. Mime is called Kantonian because that’s the first region we as players could get it, but the only ones available in Kanto outside of Let’s Go are either from trades or from the game counter, plus a very tiny amount that appear in the grass patch south of Pallet Town in Gold and Silver but not Red and Blue, implying that someone in Pallet Town has been breeding and releasing Mr. Mimes, and I’m not going to say who, but we all know these Mimes are a certain protagonist’s half-siblings, don’t we?
So where is Mr. Mime from? Well, we’ve established that the first Mr. Mime we met, Marcel, didn’t come from Kanto, and there’s no Mr. Mime in Johto, Hoenn, or Unova. Alola’s a weird one, as they don’t appear in Sun and Moon but they do appear in both Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Still, they’re only in one location and Alola is known for having many imported Pokemon. Sinnoh’s a possibility- while the Trophy Garden is clearly cultivated, Mr. Mime and Mime Jr. both appear in the wild in Diamond (but not Pearl). Still, I think the actual natural habitat of this Mr. Mime is the Reflection Cave in Kalos. Not only would a mime Pokemon make the most sense in the Kalos region, but it’d make far more sense for it to be living in a hall of mirrors than simply wandering grasslands as it does in Diamond. Further, this is in much closer proximity to the Galar Region, where Mime Jr.s and Galarian Mr. Mimes wander freely. Thus, for the rest of this article I’m going to refer to this creature as Kalosian Mr. Mime.
And Kalosian Mr. Mime is terrifying. This thing is so Uncanny Valley that it goes down to becoming some sort of Uncanny Trench where light vanishes and there’s no hope for escape. It has all the most terrifying aspects of a clown, with a vaguely human form that isn’t quite right, hair that resembles horns, and an uncomfortably close relationship with your mother. Its bright coloration and curly feet are just sort of haunting, giving the illusion that it’s wearing clothes while in actuality that’s all just part of it’s horrible, horrible body.
In contrast, Galarian Mr. Mime is much friendlier looking. The pants help a lot, but so do the big gloves and the nose. It looks less like a monster and more like a cartoony man, and while it’s still weird to see a Pokemon that’s so humanlike, this version doesn’t feel inherently wrong and unsettling. Much better design here, unless the goal is to freak people out. That said, I just don’t buy this as an evolved form of Mime Jr. Galar really needed a Galarian Mime Jr. to finish the set, because as is Mime Jr. turning into Galarian form in Galar and Kalosian form anywhere else just feels off. The other weird thing is that Galarian Mr. Mime, with its new focus on tapdance, doesn’t still feel like it should be called Mr. Mime. It’s something I complain about a lot with alternate forms, but if a creature’s called Mr. Mime it should be miming, not dancing, and if a creature’s called Sandshrew it should be sand based.
Visually, I love Mr. Rime. He’s got all the charm of Galarian Mr. Mime but now has a silly hat and an ice cane. He also gets the red bubble on his stomach back from being a Mime Jr. which makes me question why Galarian Mr. Mime doesn’t have it. Mime Jr. links fine to Mr. Rime, but through features lost along the way, like its hat and its big red poofs. Mr. Rime is also clearly Charlie Chaplin, and I love the pun of its name in that it’s both Rime and Rhyme.
EVOLUTIONS:
Oh god this line is a mess.
First we get Mime Jr, which has first form starter stats, but evolves when knowing the move Mimic. With no TM or TR, Mime Jr. learns Mimic at 32, finally evolving into a Pokemon whose stat total is still a bit small for a final form. If it’s not in Galar, it stays a Psychic/Fairy type. If it is in Galar, it becomes a Psychic/Ice type, which then evolves again at 42 into something that’s not actually that big a boost over its previous for, making Galarian Mr. Mime a good user of the Eviolite.
And then Mime Jr. is an incense baby, so if you breed two Mr. Mimes (and you can because despite the name half are female) you get a Mr. Mime if you’re not using incense. This is a stupid mechanic that they need to get rid of.
As with Farfetch’d, the fact that the original doesn’t get a new evolution while the regional form does bothers me, because it doesn’t do anything to bring the original back into playability, it just gives us a new different Pokemon that makes the original less relevant.
I will say Mime Jr. was a good addition. While some baby Pokemon are a waste of time, Mime Jr.’s actually a really solid early-game Pokemon, and Mr. Mime’s strong enough that it shouldn’t be appearing until mid to late game anyway. Adding Mime Jr. adds a lot of playability to this line in PVE.

TYPING:
Kalosian Mr. Mime spent a lot of time as a Psychic type until we actually went to Kalos and found out it was a Psychic/Fairy type this whole time. Defensively, this is decent. It only has three weaknesses, and while it only has three ‘resistances,’ one of them’s a double and one of them’s an immunity. Offensively, it’s super-effective against four types and neither type works well against Steel… but that’s Steel, and most things don’t work well against Steel.
Galarian Mr. Mime and Mr. Rime are Ice/Psychic types, with their only competition in that type combination being Jynx and the legendary Ice Rider Calyrex. Defensively, this is a really bad combination, with six weaknesses and only two resistances- Ice and Psychic themselves. Offensively, this gives super-effective options against six types with only Steel as a shared resistance.
Art by DarkraiLady
STATS
Kalosian Mr. Mime has a whopping 120 Special Defense, but a mere 40 HP, seriously inhibiting its ability to actually tank, and only 65 physical defense. It’s 100 Special Attack is respectable, but Speed 90 isn’t really enough to make a sweeper out of it, even with Nasty Plot.
Galarian Mr. Mime balances its stats a bit, trading Special Attack and Special Defense for a bit more HP and Speed, but the only thing here that really works out in its favor is that it can equip an Eviolite, turning it into an actual defensive Pokemon, albeit one that still has poorer HP than most.
Mr. Rime brings up most of its stats as evolutions do, but weirdly drops its speed from 100 to 70. It manages to be more defensive than average post-evolution, but its key stat becomes its 110 Special Attack. Overall, its stats are fine, able to dish out hits and take them, and its worst stats are only a bit below average.
Singin’ in the Snow by Pizapioart
ABILITIES
Kalosian Mr. Mime and Galarian Mr. Mime have entirely different abilities, with Mr. Rime having another.
Like Electrode, Kalosian Mr. Mime can get Soundproof, and there’s plenty of Sound based attacks out there, making this a decent defensive option. This improves in 2v2 where you can pair it with Boomburst.
Filter, a near-Signature ability of Mr. Mime, is another powerful defensive option, reducing the damage of supereffective moves from 2x to 1.5x. As you can reasonably expect most opponents to have Poison, Steel, or Ghost moves somewhere in their lineup, you really can’t go wrong with this.
Technician increases the power of any of Mr. Mime’s moves of 60 power or less by 50%, and in theory this is a good ability, but Mr. Mime just learns all the good moves anyway. There’s no reason to use a Technician’d Confusion when you can learn Psychic, or a Technician’d Magical Leaf when you can learn Energy Ball. Skipping this should be easy, because it’s Mr. Mime’s Hidden Ability.
Galarian Mr. Mime (but not Mr. Rime) gets Vital Spirit, which grants immunity to sleep. This is fine and usable and plenty of enemies will try and put you to sleep, but this isn’t the reason you’d be using this Pokemon.
Mr. Rime gets Tangled Feet, which is a garbage ability for garbage Pokemon. Nobody needs raised evasion when confused, what they need is to not be confused.
Ice Body, hidden ability of Galarian Mr. Mime and Mr. Rime, causes a Pokemon to heal in Hail. Of course, every Pokemon that can get this, other than the not-fully-evolved Seel, takes no damage in Hail anyway, and it really takes a fully defensive playstyle to worry about using your ability on sometimes healing 1/16th max HP a turn. There are ways to build Mr. Rime for this, but it’ll involve other Poekmon on your team setting up the Hail and wanting it, too.
Besides, Galarian Mr. Mime and Mr. Rime have the signature ability “Screen Cleaner” which negates Reflect, Light Screen, and Aurora Veil upon switching in. This ability is honestly the best reason to use these Pokemon, more than anything they’ll actually do once on the field. Any ability that has an effect on switch in tends to be good, because as long as it’s something you wanted done, you basically just got a free action.
Art by PeregrineJazmin, formerly Retkikosmos
MOVES:
Psychic and Psyshock are both great options for your primary attack form. Psychic is a bit bigger, but as you’ll have a special move of your other element to fall back on, Psyshock adds a bit more versatility.
Kalosian Mr. Mime’s only Fairy attack is Dazzling Gleam so you take Dazzling Gleam. Galarian Mr. Mime/Mr. Rime gets your choice of Ice Beam, Blizzard, or Freeze-Dry. Freeze Dry has the drawback of being weaker most of the time, but extra strong against Water Types, which are rather common. Blizzard is more likely to outright end something, but without Hail its accuracy is rather poor.
Coverage options are pretty wide for the mimes. Thunderbolt, Energy Ball, Shadow Ball, and Focus Blast are available to both, with that last one being super effective against the Steel types that resist Psychic, Fairy, and Ice.
If you think you’ll get a moment to build up, Nasty Plot is always a great move, as is the more defensive Calm Mind.
Mr. Rime gets two particularly interesting options: it can Rapid Spin, which combines well with Screen Cleaner to reset the field, and it can learn Slack Off, the normal type equivalent of Recover.
The Mime family’s move pools are actually rather deep, and there’s plenty more options in there, like Hypnosis, Reflect and Light Screen, Baton Pass, Iron Defense, Stored Power, and, via older gens, Healing Wish.
Art by albrt-wlson, which I have to assume is short for Albert Wilson, but might actually be Alberta Walesong.
OVERALL:
I love to hate Mr. Mime, though overall the whole family winds up in the range of ‘fine.’ Mr. Rime’s speed loss is its biggest hit, but other than that there’s a lot of good stuff it can do, especially with both Screen Cleaner and Rapid Spin. Having below average speed on a Pokemon with so many weaknesses is a problem, but with such a strong variety of moves there’s a lot that can make up for it.
Kalosian Mr. Mime, unfortunately, really needs that stat boost that Mr. Rime got or the ability to use Eviolite like Galarian Mr. Mime, and it just doesn’t have either.
The other thing that really bugs me about Kalosian Mr. Mime is its abilities or lack thereof. In flavor, Mr. Mime is THE Barrier Pokemon. Reflect and Light Screen are supposed to be what it does better than anyone else… but it just isn’t. Sure, Soundproof, Filter, and Technician are interesting, but I’d have loved to see Mr. Mime have something like Prankster or an ability that mimicked Light Clay, anything to say ‘this is the Pokemon that is best at Reflect.’ Honestly it’s a problem I see in the game a lot, a Pokemon having a specifically mentioned ability or a clear signature move that the Pokemon just has no reason to use. At least Mr. Rime clearly wants to use Teeter Dance with Tangled Feet, even if that strategy isn’t a strong one.
It just really bugs me when a Pokemon isn’t good at what it’s supposed to do, even if it’s good in other ways.

Wait, Sandshrew are herbivores? I didn't expect that! I don't know where I would have heard this, as no one I know has ever cared for a Sandshrew, but I thought they ate small bug types!
They eat mostly rocks and sand, like a lot of Ground Types, but also cacti and other desert-dwelling plants!
Alolan Sandshrew eat frozen berries, and sometimes snow.

Alternate Next Gen (Frontier Brains): Garnet Maple
Garnet is the older son of Ruby and Sapphire. Due to how he looks a lot like his father, people thought that Garnet would be a Pokemon Coordinator like his father but they were in for a surprise when Garnet took more of an interest in Pokemon battling while his younger sister took an interest in Pokemon contests. Despite how he looks a lot like Ruby, Garnet acts a lot like Sapphire being head strong and preferring to train himself and his Pokemon rather than make them look beautiful like his sister, however despite how different their views are Garnet cares about his sister and accepts what she does even if he doesn’t get the point of Pokemon contests like his father and sister. Garnet always spent a lot of time in nature with his mom, as such he developed a sixth sense related to nature which made him able to tell when it was going to rain, snow or any kind of weather that was going to happen when he’s in the area. Garnet had inherited his father’s ability to tell a Pokemon’s nature by looking at them but he developed them farther by knowing what that Pokemon’s favorite food is by just looking at them which lead him to carry all kinds of berries while he’s in the wild to distract a wild Pokemon long enough for him to gain their trust and get them to not attack him. Because of how well in tune with nature Garnet is, he decided to focus his entire team around weather and carefully selected what Pokemon would be best for him to use that could benefit with all kinds of weather conditions. Lazarus had heard of Garnet’s team and had asked him to join his Battle Frontier, to which Garnet agreed as he wanted to show off his training and his team to others.
His Pokemon:
Castform- Castform was given to Garnet by his father, Castform happens to be the son of Ruby’s own Castform. Garnet’s Castform is very determined to battle alongside Garnet, he didn’t have an interest in being part of a contest like his mother and would instead focus on battling much like his trainer. Castform takes advantage of his ability to change his form into his Sunny, Rainy or Snowy forms and will use moves that benefit whatever form he takes when he uses any of the weather moves he knows. Castform’s personality changes when he’s in a certain form as well, when he’s in his normal form he’s playful, cheerful and easy to please as he’s mostly seen smiling at everyone. When he’s in his Sunny form, he’s hot tempered and determined to win for himself and his trainer. When he’s in his Rainy form, he’s more mellow and calm and would think clearly during a battle. When he’s in his Snowy form, he’s a stern and calculating but he can also be a bit distant and sometimes a little too much to handle or get along with, thankfully Garnet knows how to get him to open up even when he’s cold and distant in his Snowy form. In battle, Castform relies on his ability and his weather changing moves to change his form during battle and to give him an edge as well as to turn the tides during battle.
Given in a Pokeball.
Ability is Forecast.
Moves are Sunny Day, Rain Dance, Hail, Weather Ball, Solar Beam, Thunder, Blizzard, Fire Blast, Future Sight and Return.
Tangela- Garnet had caught Tangela after he had nursed her back to health when she was attacked by some Poison type Pokemon. Tangela is a shy Pokemon that mostly hides behind her trainer but when she gets to know someone she’s very open and affectionate, nuzzling against someone when she really gets used to someone. When she’s in battle, she acts a lot different and gets serious and will always attack as best as she can during a fight with anyone she’s up against. While she does get nervous when she’s up against a Poison type Pokemon, she still will battle as hard as she can despite how afraid she is. Tangela refuses to evolve as she doesn’t like how her evolved form looks and would rather stay small as well prove that she doesn’t have to evolve to be strong, so she holds onto an Everstone to prevent her from evolving into Tangrowth. Her battle style revolves around her using the sunlight to make herself faster as well as grant her more health when she uses Synthesis, she also relies on her powder moves to inflict status effects as well as moves that give her health in the middle of a battle.
Caught in a Pokeball.
Ability is Chlorophyll.
Held Item is an Everstone.
Moves are Giga Drain, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder, Poison Powder, Ancient Power, Synthesis, Leech Seed, Solar Beam, Grassy Terrain and Energy Ball.
Sandslash- Sandslash was caught by Garnet when he was a Sandshrew. As a Sandshrew, Sandslash was determined to get stronger but he would always fall short and would mostly end up get beaten by another Pokemon. When he saw Garnet and his Pokemon, he approached them and challenged him to a battle as an attempt to get caught by Garnet. He got his wish when Garnet saw his potential and ended up catching Sandshrew. After a lot of training, he had evolved into a Sandslash much to Sandslash’s delight. Sandslash is a proud Pokemon, he enjoys how strong he is now and does his best to make himself stronger and tougher. Sandslash takes great pride in his attack and he’ll always make sure to make himself stronger how ever he can with basic strength increasing regimens, he also tries his best to avoid getting wet or cold as he hates both water and cold weather but thankfully he thought of some counters while he was with Garnet. Sandslash’s battle style is him using Sandstorm to make himself faster as well as hide himself, he also uses his claws to stir up sand to get Water type moves not to effect him.
Caught in a Pokeball.
Ability is Sand Rush.
Moves are Dig, Earthquake, Swords Dance, Crush Claw, Drill Run, Stone Edge, Giga Impact, Sandstorm, Fury Cutter and Slash.
Goodra- Goodra was caught by Garnet when he was a little Goomy. Goodra was unsure how his new trainer would be, especially with how most trainers ignore him due with him being a weaker Dragon type but he was happy that Garnet caught him. When he had evolved into Sliggoo, he and Garnet started training a lot in the rain so he could evolve into a Goodra. It took a while but after he managed to track when it was raining Goodra had ended up evolving during a battle with another trainer. Goodra is a very friendly Pokemon, he enjoys being with his trainer and his team, Goodra is also affectionate and enjoys giving his trainer a hug and he always apologizes for covering him in slime but Garnet doesn’t mind. Goodra really loves being in the rain or being near water in general, he always loves to go out in the rain and just dance around as it rains, he also is very protective of his trainer and will always go far as to come out of his Ultra Ball just to punch someone who tries to bring harm to his trainer. Goodra’s battle style has him rely on the rain and he has some moves that benefit in rain, such as Thunder and various Water type moves which get a boost in the rain. He also uses his ability Hydration as a benefit.
Caught in a Ultra Ball.
Ability is Hydration.
Moves are Dragon Pulse, Aqua Tail, Mega Punch, Rain Dance, Thunder, Outrage, Draco Meteor, Iron Tail, Hydro Pump and Breaking Swipe.
Glalie- Garnet had caught Glalie after a battle while it was hailing, Garnet was impressed with how well Glalie was able to battle so he caught him after weakening him more. Glalie isn’t much of a talker when it comes to being with his teammates as he likes to be by himself more often he likes to be with the others. He’s still opening up to the others with the only one he’s okay being with is Castform and his trainer, he isn’t as fond being with anyone else in the group. Despite how he acts around others, he still works hard to be the best battler he can be for his trainer and his team and he’s glad he was able to join a team full of Pokemon who use the weather to their advantage and he’s happy being in the cold. Glalie is a tough Pokemon, he also knows how to use his natural ability of freezing moisture in the air to create counters to attacks and he mastered how to do it with almost little to no issues. Glalie also takes pride in himself when he beats a Fire type or any kinds of type he’s weak against as he dislikes how people underestimate him for being an Ice type Pokemon. His battle style is using Hail to hinder his opponents while the hail will heal him over time, he also will use moves that will hinder his opponent or use what they did to him as a way to counter his opponent.
Caught in a Ultra Ball.
Ability is Ice Body.
Moves are Hail, Frost Breath, Freeze-Dry, Sheer Cold, Facade, Blizzard, Payback, Bulldoze, Avalanche and Sleep Talk.

Baby Vulpix are born with a solitary white tail, which reddens and splits as it grows.
Given the conversion to Ice we must forgive the lack of colour, but the ends sticking together is inexplicable.
Perhaps it's tangled with perspiration, as a furry fox embellished with fluffy pouffes is not best equipped to deal with a simmering climate.
When Fire, and thus possessed of an inner furnace, such outer decoration is easily borne, but losing his type means it's nothing but a burden for these endless summer days.
If he became Ice to cope, why not shed such bothersome apparel? What benefit is there in retaining a fur coat?
Perhaps the transformation is yet to reach fruition, and we are witnessing merely a stage midway, before it drops off.
The correct crown plumage is three tight little curls above a small fringe, but here we find a most dishevelled appearance.
It smacks of a want of propriety.
Why any creature should don a toupee of albino pubes shall remain a mystery. Clearly they are no longer of sound mind.
I blame the diabolical influence of those wicked polyps sprouting from his ears.
Polyps grow in the cavities of a cat's head like the toadstools of Satan.
If they aren't removed they bore into its brain!
Are you blind? What's that there then?
I thought Ninetales had nine tails.
A matted bush with seven straggling ends wafting in the breeze.
The lack of separation is less of a concern when one realises the billowing quality equates to having no solid form.
He's lost his bloody tail bones, man! That bastard sun butchered him!
Like Parasect, the parasitic colonisation is complete, with polyps responsible for Ninetales's degradation from vindictive lunatic to feeble-fannied pacifist.
Remember Normal Ninetales? The regal reincarnation of nine noble saints who, were he offended, delivered eternal curses upon the perpetrator?
And it wasn't just a temporary punishment? It wasn't even for your lifetime?
It doomed generation after generation of your descendants, lasting ONE THOUSAND YEARS!!!
How does Alola Ninetales compete?
He'll douse you cold water.
No! The last thing I need is a cool down!
Well, if he's annoyed, if he's really, really, thoroughly ticked off, you'll be frozen.
And instantly thaw.
He's got that skin. Or fur even.
Meowth don't brown in sunlight. He greys. What was brown bleached to white.
Last year, when Sadism and Masochism still ran, I was up to me teef in posts praising Velma's mutant pussy, because Team Rocket can do no wrong, apparently.
A creature of alien grey, with a smug, squashed mush and Betty Spaghetti limbs, carved from the rubberiest lump of Kraken ever washed up on the shores of Siberia, was treated like a treasure, a faultless jewel we are honoured to behold.
However, as the S & M sesssion finished, I discovered that approval of Alolan Meowth is an extreme minority view.
Well yer could've fooled me!
What did we learn?
A. T.A.P. is in the majority at last!
B. Tumblr gives a really skewed idea of the wider fandom.
This hot stuff's a bitch eh?
Soon as touching the innocuous cat, it dived in his back and reorganised his spinal column, bipedal abilities serving as such a fine defence against sunburn, which is why fat-headed Persian loses it again.
I hope Game Freak did remember that our Meowth is the exception, and the breed aren't meant to walk upright.
It's very sloppy record-keeping otherwise.
Forget silly notions of black felines browned by prolonged sunbathing, what really goes down is cream darkening to grey, whilst any ruby gemstones they may possess becomes royal blue, obviously.
Persian was drawn in an identical stance to the real one to assist identification. I can't say I'd know without that visual clue.
Grey and blue? Has Persian, playing by his own rules, developed hypothermia?
He's a maverick, man! Petty laws of nature are meaningless to this cool cat!
As for his unfortunate face, it has swelled to painful proportions in the sizzling environment, like a woman's lower extremities.
It shows why a certain representative of the race lashed out by beating up Litten, besides intentions to eat or mount Popplio.
His features group together under the gravitation pull of the Ultra Wormhole secreted inside his skull, caused no doubt by baleful polyps.
Yer gotta watch 'em!
Ah, and where is the ambulance service striving to cure every Persian of this double malady?
There isn't one, 'cause they don't care.
Yeah, well he'll have the last laugh. That loaf is still a-growing, and one day will explode, unleashing said cosmic damnation upon the heartless savages, atomising all before it.
Sandshrew mate, yer getting hefty.
And then they'll be sorry!
I'll have you know I'm retaining water to survive.
Retaining pies more like.
Sandshrew can't abide damp, choosing to reside in dry areas well away from any substantial precipitation.
How exactly it crossed the sea to small series of islands surrounded by more sea is a mystery, but happen it did.
A creature of such taste should head inland, far from the shore, to a dusty landscape, the sort found on Akala Island.
What did it do?
He clambered the peaks, where much moisture awaits, snow being water, and stayed until ice colonised his person.
And got ears like an igloo.
Makes total sense for a Pokémon with an aversion to anything cold and wet to rush straight for the source.
Plus, that girth suggests piling on the fat to cope with a habitat it selected.
Oh no, that's a coat of steel. Definitely not ice. It's just bluish white and shimmering, like ice.
On an Ice Pokémon. But no ice here.
Shivering in a blizzard compelled it to develop a thick metal hide? That'll be useful when Alola goes to war and needs ammunition for the cannons.
A freezing, inflexible suit of armour not only works wonders against frostbite, but Sandshrew will sweat to death should it descend to the places it used to live.
The eyes are partly on its old face, but now overlap onto the ridge, meaning his eyeballs are bent in half.
One does expect sand and sand-related features from a Sandslash, such as Ground powers.
But a pangolin's gotta avoid the Chinese somehow, and so up he went, climbing them thar hills, whereupon his spikes, previously a natural fibre, transformed into steel stalagmites, and over that came an icy epidermis.
Trap up there forever, and blind!
Roasting conditions suffice to make mischief by melting rocks, so what befalls types weak to heat?
If Sandslash goes to sea level, his back will vaporise in the first blast of said dread inferno, leaving him vulnerable, just as the wet markets like 'em.
Worse, his upper limbs are not affixed to his body. Via the flimsiest joint, they're glued to the ice thanks to its adhesive effects.
It's as one often sees when scamps, walking to school, lick a lamppost upon a winter morn.
And soon regret.
Whence comes the thaw, his arms is gonna fall off, and then what defence can be mustered against the People's Republic?
AND, given his head is also majority cone, as it breaks, his skull will crack open and his brains tip out!
No wonder they're goin' extinct!

Moonvale's Pokemon Commentary: #27 Sandshrew
They could have called the variant Snowshrew and that upsets me. Time to shake off my hiatus rust and get cracking!
Just for Looks:
Sandshrew is a cute lil rodent-like critter that has a brick like pattern of scales on its body, much like a Pangolin except a pangolin's keratin scales look like... y'know. Scales. And keratin is the same stuff your fingernails or things like certain animals horns and claws are made of. I imagine petting a Sandshrew is a lot like petting a pinecone that feels like fingernails. ;) You're welcome for that mental sensation. Color wise, it's what you would expect for a critter with sand in its name: mainly yellow with a white creamy area where it doesn't have hardened plates. It also has the prettiest shade of blue in its big, rodent like bead eyes. Its shiny form has the same (if not ever so slightly different) Shade of creamy white underbelly and muzzle flesh, but its plates are a lime green, which feels more like a saturated pastel mint green in the 3D models. Surprisingly, I don't hate this. It looks rather nice on this little guy and goes well with his eyes!
Now, for Alolan Variant Sandshrew. Its face is a bit more adorably squished in due to its keratin plating more closely resembling a little igloo themed helmet on its head. It's back armor is also a decent bit thicker and almost looks like he's wearing a seamless turtle shell made of snow bricks. Its unarmored sections of its body are a much more yellow cream color than the usual Sandshrew. Its armor looks like its made of snow, unsurprisingly. When we look at its shiny form, its armored plating appears to stay the same shade of snowy white with hints of blue, but its creamy muzzle is now a much darker blue, like a lighter version of its eye color. I absolutely love this. It looks so pretty. I imagine Alolan Sandshrew use the snow to make armor considering it doesn't change color when shiny.
I would hug every Sandshrew I saw if I could get the mental image of nail-growth feeling armor out of my head.
What's in the Name:
Not too difficult to figure out either version of this critter's name, really. Sandshrew comes from Sand and Shrew. It's Japanese name is Sand. If I have to explain what this thing's name means I'm going to need to take another vacation.
The 'Dex Says:
Sandshrew dislike water, since they're ground types. This is why they choose to live in burrows dug deep in arid desert-like areas. According to Hoenn dex entries, it burrows into the ground at night to sleep. I'd think the deeper you go even in an arid environment the more likely you are to find moisture from underground water deposits. But I'm not a geologist or anything so I'm probably wrong. Anyway, Sandshrew stay in their burrows unless they've come up to hunt and while hunting they will wait at the mouth of their burrow's entrance and quickly lash out and drag its captured prey inside. According to Alolan dex entries, it also digs holes to catch bug type pokemon!
Unsurprisingly, the plate like hide they protect themselves with is very dry. Though during cold nights its said to become coated in a fine dew. I'm not exactly sure how that works, but neat! Its body is built to absorb any amount of water without waste, so I suppose this is how they get the majority of their water based nourishment. When their skin grows too saturated with water it wrinkles. When this happens they basically bask on warm volcanic rock to dry themselves off. I imagine they would also bask on hot desert stones in regions where volcanic activity isn't really a thing. To protect itself from danger it will curl into a tight ball, protecting itself with its tough hide. They can survive even high falls by curling into a ball and simply bouncing from the impact. These things must have very thick rubbery plating or something, and apparently it travels the desert by rolling up in a ball like Sonic the Hedgehog. Good thing I don't have any of the desert themed zone songs memorized or I'd be very annoyed right now.
Now, for Alolan Sandshrew... these critters came about from Sandshrew that fled a volcanic eruption. I guess even if regular sandshrew use volcanic heat to dry themselves out they can't really sand up to lava. These Sandshrew ended up developing hard, icy plated shells. However, this variation is unable to curl into balls any longer due to the stiffness of these shells, which are said to be hard as steel. Predators take advantage of this lack of curling defense and try to attack the soft unprotected sections of its body, resulting in the poor Alolan Sandshrew desperately clinging to the ground and hoping they don't get flipped over.
Also Alolan natives like to slide them across ice as far as they can during festivals like they're those things you use in curling. I.. I really hope that's fun for the sandshrew.
It's Rating Time!
Regular Sandshrew gets a 4/5. They're super cute!
Alolan Sandshrew gets a 5/5. They're even cuter!
But Wait, There's More:
Sandshrew has one of my favorite sprites in any of the games. Look at this happy boy. Look how cute it is. I want to hug it. He's like a round lil happy baby!! If you don't find this even the slightest bit adorable I'm pretty sure it means you have no soul and should probably get that looked at.

Facts about the Sandshrew Family
1. Alolan Sandshrew is based on an igloo and a curling stone
The igloo basis may seem rather obvious based on its appearance. However, Sandshrew is also based on the stone or “rock” used in curling, a sport that is very popular in Canada but actually originates from Scotland.
2. Both forms of this evolution family have weather-based abilities
Sandshrew’s ability is Sand Veil, which increases evasion in a sandstorm, and its hidden ability is Sand Rush, which increases speed in a sandstorm. Alolan Sandshrew’s ability is Snow Cloak, which increases evasion in hail, and its hidden ability is Slush Rush, which increases speed in hail.
3. Alolan Sandshrew cannot curl into a ball but can still use rollout
Pokemon Sun’s Pokedex entry states that Alolan Sandshrew’s ice shell is so hard that it cannot roll up into a ball. Despite this, it can still learn the move rollout.
4. Sandshrew is based on an armadillo
Armadillos also roll up into balls, have sharp claws and live in deserts, which are all traits that Kantoian Sandshrew has.
5. Sandslash is based on pangolins as well as many spiny creatures
Pangolins are also know as scaly anteaters and are found in desert regions. However, Sandslash having spikes also points toward hedgehogs, echidnas, and porcupines.
6. Alolan Sandslash’s claws are inspired by ice axes
Alolan Sandslash has hooked claws which give it the ability to climb icy surfaces. Ice axes are used by mountaineers climbing snowy, icy, or frozen surfaces.

Double Sandslash Extravaganza
Requested by typewryter
Sandslash - Sand Rush Swords Dance
Ability: Sand Rush (This Pokemon’s Speed doubles in a Sandstorm)
Nature: Jolly (+Spe -Spe Atk) Item: Life Orb Moves: Earthquake (Level 53/TM 26) Knock Off (ORAS Move Tutor) Leech Life (TM 28) Swords Dance (TM 75/ Level 43) EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 Def
Even though Sandslash only has a base speed of 65 a Jolly nature and Sandstorm setup allows Sandslash to move incredibly fast. Since you’ll need a turn to set up With Swords Dance this set would work best on a doubles team with a Pokemon that can automatically set up Sand Stream, like Tyranitar or Gigalith. Knock Off will do great damage after a Swords Dance and will greatly reduce the effectiveness of any enemy Pokemon not holding a Mega Stone or Z-Crystal, and Leech Seed provides type coverage while giving Sandslash a way to recover from the Life Orb HP drain.
Alolan Sandslash - Slush Rush Swords Dance
Ability: Slush Rush (Doubles the Pokemon’s Speed in Hail; provides immunity to Hail) Nature: Jolly (+Spe -Sp Atk) Item: Life Orb Moves: Icicle Crash (Heart Scale/Egg Move) Iron Head (Sandshrew at level 30) Earthquake (TM 87) Swords Dance (TM 75) EVs: 252 Atk, 252 Spe, 4 Atk Similar to standard Sandslash, Alolan Sandslash works best on a Doubles team to quickly set up Hail and activate Slush Rush. I enjoy pairing A. Sandslash with Alolan Ninetails simply because A. Ninetail’s Hidden Ability, Snow Warning, seems to have been made specifically to be used with A. Sandslash. Of course, this double Ice pairing leaves you very vulnerable to Fire types, but Earthquake can help with that threat. Just make sure to run Protect on A. Ninetails so it won’t become collateral damage to Earthquake.
Real talk, Alolan Sandslash should have been called Slicicle. Honestly I would have liked it if all the Alolan forms had new names. What the hell does an Ice-type Sandslash have to do with sand?
