I definitely plan on posting more thoughts about Sanda when I finish it; but I think I've gotten to the end of the Ono plotline and really wanted to give some thoughts on it. Spoilers for the first 40 or so chapters below.

So Ono's disappearance is the inciting incident of the manga. The whole reason Fuyumura unlocks Sanda's santa powers is so that he can help her find Ono. And pretty quickly we get a lead in chapter 3 when we learn that students deemed to have trauma are taken "underground". Awfully suspicious.

And then the underground stuff is kinda forgotten about and still hasn't been elaborated on by the point I've gotten to. Maybe it's a plot point later but it's a little odd to set it up so early, especially when it seems so relevant to the current mystery.

But then they discover that Sanda is a lie detector, and since everyone at school except the main characters think Ono is dead, they are able to find out that someone is lying when they say they think Ono is dead. This is a big deal. Someone knows something and is keeping it secret. And it's later revealed to be Sanda's fiancee! ... This also is not use at all to solve the mystery.

And eventually the Ono plotline kinda just feels like an afterthought since none of the characters are doing anything to solve it. But eventually Ono appears in the flesh! and she runs and the main characters fail to catch up to her. This could add another lair of mystery if it didn't just go back to none of the characters trying to solve the mystery.

And then a lot more stuff happens, and the characters talk about Ono and finding her a bunch but none of it is "here is what we will do to find Ono".

And then Fuyumura is doing laundry. And Ono just shows up. And explains to her and the audience where she was. Turns out that the answer to the mystery was "she fell asleep which made her go through puberty. So she ran away from school." And like... there are worse reveals. This does a lot to deepen the worldbuilding. And it leads to a cool fight scene. But it's super anti-climactic if you ask me.

But hey now Ono is part of the main cast! What will they do with her? Well you see she has several scenes where she tells Fuyumura "you don't actually love me. You should fall in love with the protagonist boy instead." until Fuyumura has to snap some sense into her and say "I DO love you! It's been my motivation since day one!" And then Ono dies.

And then Ono dies.

From what you may ask? Growing pains. She puberty'd too hard and it literally killed her, and despite medical surgery being so advanced you can replace every part of your body but your hands and brain with artificial parts, nothing was done to prevent this.

And this was the moment that made me sat down and type all of this. Cause WHAT HAPPENED? This couldn't have been the plan when the story started. It feels like so much of what happens with Ono as a character is just "and then this happens" and none of it has anything to do with the actions of the characters.

I also wanna say at this point a very important thing; I LOVE Sanda. I've been loving reading it and I can't wait to read the rest. And even I think the things that happen in this plotline are bad, the way the characters react to said things are great moments. And also every other plotline in the manga is really really good.

But wow. Ono. They did you so dirty.

I'm quite excited to watch the Sanda anime. It'll be really cool seeing all these characters I love animated and with voices. But I am staying the hell away from the fandom tag once the dub releases. Modern Western fandom cannot handle Sanda. Holy shit the discourse it will spawn. Santa runs around in his underwear for quite a while, and as we know Sanda is 14 years old. Ono (14) has a very steamy dream about Fuyumura. And yes it is illustrated. Santa ends up completely naked in front of a group of teens. (They walk away thinking they saw God.)

And of course, one of the villains' mission is to preserve a child's innocence as long as possible and through any means necessary. As soon as a kid shows any sign of "trauma" or growing up he banishes them to the basement so they don't corrupt any other students.

I'm excited but also a little filled with dread. Hopefully the fandom tag won't be as bad as I'm expecting it to be.

So I just read the first chapter of Paru Itagaki's (mangaka of Beastars) new series, "Sanda."

This is a story that literally opens with our main female lead, Fuyumura, trying to stab our main male lead, Sanda.

Which Sanda then misinterprets into thinking that Fuyumura might have feelings for him and this is how she is showing it after the mysterious and presumed death of her friend, Ono.

None of that could have prepared me for what came next.

And y’know what... She was right... After stabbing Sanda, of course

And now its up to this Santa with muscles to make this Tim Burton girl happy by finding her missing friend in a world that doesn’t believe in Christmas or Santa anymore or even snow in December. 

Okay, manga... You have all of my attention.
