Opera Of The Year
I don’t suppose you expect to be on the receiving end of medical treatment on a night out at the opera, but this is what happened to eighteen members of the audience who attended two performances at the Stuttgart State Opera of Sancta, a interpretation of Paul Hindesmith’s original opera, Sancta Susanna, by Austrian choreographer, Florentina Holzinger. The performance featured live piercing,…

Explicit Sex Scenes & Sadist Depictions in ‘Sancta Susanna’ Leave 18 Audiences Seeking Medical Attention at Staatsoper Stuttgart
"According to the Guardian and TMZ, the production featured a live piercing, unsimulated sexual intercourse, and copious amounts of fake and real blood. The Daily Mail which first reported the story added that production includes “an actress with dwarfism dressed as the Pope being raised up into the air and spun around by a robotic arm, while another performs Eminem songs dressed as Jesus” and sees the female cast “playing nuns who strip off their habits throughout the ‘sensual, poetic and wild’ show.”

ive never gone to see an opera live in europe let alone one outside of a major theater that regularly records and broadcasts their productions so grain of salt etc but i think there's some kind of distinct cultural difference between how european companies do "reimagined" productions of operas vs how american companies do it
#sasha speaks#especially thinking about the number of 'canonical' operas that are recently getting adaptations over here#frequently into english language musicals/operettas#not like rent and miss saigon though i mean more like matchbox magic flute#and la périchole getting adapted as songbird by glimmerglass and wno#or the local company that's putting on a 'circus' version of rigoletto with a new english libretto here in dec#(not sure what that will entail yet but i'm intrigued to find out)#hell even the upcoming pirates of penzance revival on bway which is also weirdly enough getting the jazz age new orleans makeover#ik pirates and bway is a different story from Opera(tm) Proper but still. tangential#anyway don't expect much more elaboration tonight i'm in bed rn as i type.#plus i'd want some actual researched data to back up my claim here if i were to really go on#and i have enough school related research to be prioritizing rn as it is#anyway#oh also smth about what content does and does not appeal to american vs european audiences#and by extension what you can and cannot get away with depicting onstage#(for a recent example consider sancta susanna vs grounded)#(okay anyway gn for real this time)

I also heard somebody gets pierced onstage and “a performer has a piece of their very real flesh cut off and fried on a stove”, tbf (source)
(but I still wanna see it. so annoyed it's already sold out >:[ )
so have any of my german followers heard of that opera sancta susanna that's playing in stuttgart lately
because when i read there's an opera that had 18 people "so aghast and nauseous" they walked out and had to be treated for it i thought it'd be yk
something highly disturbing like body horror or other gross shit
not lesbian nuns having non-simulated sex on stage and there being a female pope with dwarfism and apparently sometimes they're covered in blood
#sancta susanna#opera#current events#only two performances in berlin?! come on people!#this is clearly classic berlin culture#i want ittttttttttt#german stuff#mutilation cw#body horror

i have no opinions on the whole sancta susanna thing except: good for them as long as everyone involved in the production is freely consenting and also fuck artistic censorship bc if it’s not for you it’s not for you and that’s fine! let everyone come to their own decisions

Under the guise of “performance art,” the creators of the show expose the audience to an actual Black Mass where real sex, pain, blood, and blasphemy are carried out, releasing all of this sick energy into the ether. None of this is artistic and has nothing to do with feminism. It has everything to do with saturating the public space with specific symbolism and meanings and dominating culture with a particular message.
If culture is a reflection of those who control society, does that mean that they’re Satanic, degenerate cannibals who are obsessed with desecrating Christianity? Exactly.

USC Offers to Drag Students to Hell
The ostentatiously blasphemous opera Sancta Susanna makes the satanic underpinning of moonbattery hard not to notice — as does a taxpayer-supported university drag festival entitled “Drag Me to Hell”:
“Join us for a festive night of dancing, drag, and dress-up!” reads the event description on the University of Southern California’s website featuring grotesque videos of men dressed as caricatures of women covered in blood and demonic regalia.
One nonbinary performer has a day job doing “gender-affirming body modification.” Another is comparably depraved, boasting of having raised over $50,000 for Black Lives Matter thugs out of a “passion for philanthropy.”
Numerous faculty members are involved.
The event offers a window into the world students enter when they attend college these days.

The article about audience members requiring medical treatment after Sancta Susanna reminded me of my favorite opera experience ever, a matinee double bill of Bluebeard's Castle and Erwartung.
Bluebeard's Castle is a retelling of the eponymous fairy tale, and at one point the previous wives come out of a trap door covered in red fabric. They kind of coalesce out of it, dripping in blood*. It is the most metal thing I have ever seen on a stage.
Erwartung ("expectation") is basically a monologue by an extremely mentally unwell woman wandering through the woods searching for her lover, who has left her for another woman. It's pretty strongly implied she murdered the other woman, and it's unhinged in the best way. (Here's a performance from Vienna. There's no subtitles but I think you can get the vibe.)
The house lights go on after it ends. I've been sitting near these little old white ladies, the ones you see at opera matinees because they're cheaper and it's too much fuss to go out in the evening. idk what exactly they were expecting, but it was, uh, not that.
I think opera's reputation suffers a lot from being perceived as a rich person's art form and mostly not in English. And there is a canon of stuff that gets performed all the time, because it has broad appeal and familiar tropes. But I think the weird stuff is more fun, and I wish they'd do more of it.

* Very much like Zagreus in Hades, but without quite so much annoyance and resignation hahaha
#pear text#i have seen many 'classic' operas#and for the most part they all slide out of my head#except verdi for some reason

18 зрителям понадобилась помощь медиков после просмотра скандальной оперы
В Германии скандальная опера так шокировала зрителей, что пришлось вызвать для них скорую помощь. Об этом пишет Sky News.
