EXPOSED: Meta’s $36 Billion Plot to Reengineer Society and Mark Zuckerberg’s Dangerous Future Plans for Tech Addiction

Out today, Controligarchs: Exposing the Billionaire Class, Their Secret Deals, and the Globalist Plot to Dominate Your Life, blows the lid off of Meta’s pattern of intentionally using harmful and aggressive tactics to get users addicted to social media apps like Facebook and Instagram and documents a shocking rise in depression and suicide that some scientists have linked to social media use.

This comes just weeks after dozens of state attorneys general (AGs) filed suit against Facebook’s and Instagram’s parent company, Meta Platforms Inc. (Meta), and three of its subsidiaries, for harming children by addicting them to the social media platforms. Forty-two states, including California and New York, allege that billionaire creator Mark Zuckerberg’s company “knowingly designed and deployed harmful features on Instagram and Facebook to purposefully addict children and teens.”

Previously, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen claimed that Meta targeted children and teens for monetary reasons and a leaked document showed that the youth demographic was “a valuable but untapped audience.”

Just weeks after Haugen blew the whistle on Facebook’s tactics, Zuckerberg unveiled his plan to release what may prove to be Meta’s most addictive product yet: Facebook Horizon. Zuckerberg’s October 2021 virtual tour of the new product, which was panned as “super weird,” was his coming-out party for what has become known as “the metaverse”—a digital world that users can essentially live in and access via a virtual reality (VR) headset such as Facebook’s Oculus Quest.

Zuckerberg’s metaverse launch was a conveniently timed and thinly veiled rebranding effort to distract from whistleblower documents and allegations that, according to the Associated Press, show that “Facebook ignored or downplayed internal warnings of the negative and often harmful consequences its algorithms wreaked across the world.”

In October 2021, Zuckerberg changed the name of the Facebook Inc. family of companies to Meta Platforms Inc. to signal the direction his social media empire would be heading. And Zuckerberg has pumped more than $36 billion into making his metaverse ambitions a reality.

Controligarchs reveals that Zuckerberg’s $36 billion (and growing) metaverse efforts are only just the beginning. The book documents Zuckerberg’s ongoing efforts to make the most addictive product in history: the metaverse.

One of the first virtual shops in the metaverse was a cannabis store. But it is not the tangible drugs that are the most dangerous of Meta’s offerings. The metaverse brings new consumer product offerings—including physical and biotechnological upgrades for the human body.

Meta has already filed a patent for bionic eyeballs so that users can bring their virtual reality with them everywhere and never have to leave. Zuckerberg is tinkering with other brand-new technologies, including a synthetic skin prototype called ReSkin and pneumatic “haptic gloves,” so that users could literally feel and grasp the metaverse.

Innovators are even developing scent blasters that shoot chemical mist at a user’s nose to allow them to “smell” the metaverse. In addition to basic scents like chocolate and strawberry (and even “beach”), there are more nuanced fragrances such as “fascinate,” “annihilate,” and “carouse.”

And while Meta’s VR aspirations appear to be failing with consumers, Zuckerberg’s obsession with the metaverse shows no signs of ceasing, as evidenced by its ongoing partnership with the popular Ray-Ban sunglasses franchise. Last Thursday, Meta announced a new strategic partnership China’s Tencent to make headsets cheaper and more accessible.

As Controligarchs documents, Meta’s losses are short term while its metaverse determinations are here to stay. More than five hundred major corporations are also helping to build the metaverse. Coca-Cola has released a new “pixel-flavored soda” that was “born in the metaverse.” Another company called Taste the TV has devised a method for users to literally lick their screens to “taste” the metaverse.

Critics believe that Meta’s losses mean that the metaverse is doomed to fail, but not so fast. iPhone’s manufacturer is set to release its own set of augmented reality glasses called Apple Vision Pro and the metaverse has big support from the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The WEF website has thousands of pages about the metaverse and a new initiative titled “Defining and Building the Metaverse.” It runs positive headlines such as “71% of Executives Say the Metaverse Will Be Good for Business. Here’s Why,” “Younger Generations Expect to Spend a Lot More Time in the Metaverse,” and “Who Will Govern the Metaverse.” The WEF has positioned itself as the arbiter of “best practices” for this new digital world.

The book shows that Zuckerberg has had a general disdain for the users of his products since before Facebook (in its current form) was even founded. When asked why people share personal data with him, the Facebook founder said: “People just submitted it. I don’t know why. They ‘trust me.’ Dumb fucks.” In fairness, Zuckerberg made the comment while in college at Harvard and has since distanced himself from it stating that he “absolutely” regretted the comment and thinks he has “grown and learned a lot.”

According to Controligarchs, Facebook has always exploited its users by making its features addictive, as admitted by Facebook’s founding president Sean Parker who called it a “social-validation feedback loop.” Every time a Facebook (or Instagram) user hears the notification chime, the brain emits “little dopamine hit,” Parker said, and the user gets a rush.

Controligarchs has also uncovered that the architect of the metaverse, Vishal Shah, previously served as an Instagram developer and was involved with the effort to launch “Instagram for kids.” A 2019 study found that depression and suicidal tendencies are rising among teens, and they pointed to social media use as a possible culprit.

“Facebook is going back to its old tricks, offering another product designed to get kids hooked when they are the most vulnerable,” said the head of an organization called Common Sense. The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood cited several studies to conclude that “excessive use of digital devices and social media is linked to a number of risks for children and adolescents, including obesity, lower psychological wellbeing, increased risk of depression, and increases in suicide-related outcomes.”

Zuckerberg’s Meta rebrand was criticized as a “tactic” or potential “distraction” from the fact that his companies rely on addiction as a business model. But the reality is that Meta’s new VR products may have even greater potential to addict users.

San Jose has long been known as the home of vast parking lots and suburban sprawl, but a coalition of transit advocates and tech companies have introduced tools they say will turn the city into a testing ground for the future of housing and parking policies in California.

The tools include an Airbnb-like platform for parking garage management and a heat map of San Jose’s parking demand that advocates want to use as a guide for managing metered parking in the city and identifying areas where street parking can be replaced with things like parklets and bicycle lanes.

At the heart of the tech rollout is a push to limit the construction of new large-scale parking lots and expand parking restrictions on city streets in San Jose — a city that is one of the most “overparked” municipalities in the state, according to transportation advocates — and pave the way for more homes, retail and restaurant spaces.

And city officials are on board. In December, San Jose became the country’s largest municipality to abolish decades-old parking minimums that fueled expansive concrete lots and commuter sprawl. Other cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Berkeley, have eliminated all or most parking minimums for new developments. The state also banned parking requirements near public transit stops last year.

In San Jose, housing and transit advocates worry that despite the city’s policy change, developers will continue building car-friendly structures, limiting the density of San Jose’s building boom and the impact of a new BART line in the next decade. In the city’s downtown, developers have historically provided at least one parking space per apartment unit.

“Many developers are probably just going to stick there,” said Stuart Cohen, the founder of TransForm, the organization leading the tech rollout. “Because it’s just what people have done traditionally. So we’re really trying to create a new model of development, where often you won’t even have to have one space per unit.”

The $1.6 million project, backed in large part by a Knight Foundation grant, will see TransForm push developers to scale down their parking garages by using Parkade, a private application that allows both tenants and landlords to manage limited parking spots by renting out unused spaces.

Evan Goldin, the Parkade CEO, said the company helps buildings make better use of limited parking by eliminating unneeded long-term parking spots and turning others into short-term rentals that cater to guests. In one case, a Los Angeles apartment eliminated some parking and used the space for a restaurant, he said.

“There were literally people that lived in the building that were renting long-term parking just so their girlfriend could come over twice a week,” said Goldin. “That’s pretty silly.”

Another company, Parknav, will provide a real-time parking heat map and phone app of San Jose’s downtown area that shows expected parking availability based on studies of cell phone data and other metrics.

Cohen said the map can be used by city planners to see where parking demand is high to expand metering locations, along with providing a roadmap for adjusting rates that fluctuate with demand. One example would be hiking parking meter rates at peak periods, like lunchtime near a business district.

“You can much better come up with regulations for parking,” he said. Right now he said city parking management is “all visceral and best guess.”

Parking has been an important driver of housing costs because it reduces the number of dwellings that can be built and hikes the per-unit cost of development. A 2020 SPUR report estimated that parking garage spots cost about $50,000 per space to build, and even more if the garage is underground.

The impact of San Jose’s elimination of parking minimums is still unknown. Michael Manville, an urban planning professor at UCLA, said the city shouldn’t expect parking garage construction to end anytime soon. The likely impact is a “little bit less” parking with some more housing that “adds up over time.”

Even if a developer wants to build less parking, the other challenge, said Manville, is convincing lenders to finance a project that veers away from vehicle ownership in a city where the car has historically been king.

“The key is, do you have a market in mind of people who are willing to walk a block or two to get their car?” said Manville.

While a short drive through San Jose will reveal large parking lots sitting half empty, some parts of the city, including neighborhoods in East San Jose, are already facing a severe parking crunch. Some community representatives say the city needs to take a cautious approach to discouraging parking when public transit is not a viable option for their residents’ day-to-day lives.

“When developments are not including parking spaces it’s not going to deter these residents from not having cars,” said Councilmember Peter Ortiz, who represents East San Jose’s District 5. “They’re just going to park in the surrounding neighborhoods, which are already being impacted.”

Hey there! My name’s Lee Klarich. I’m the Chief Product Officer for Palo Alto Networks, a role I’ve had in various forms for almost 20 years – since the company started. 

In that time, I’ve seen new technologies emerge that require security and enablement. However, I don’t think I’ve seen anything adopted as abruptly as generative AI over the last 12 months. It’s incredible.

Think about the amazing things that are being worked on – exciting new creative concepts, advancements in healthcare, and much more. Just last week, I was on a panel with someone from the Mayo Clinic discussing how AI will change medicine, transform how doctors will work, and even revolutionize prosthetics. 

We’ve got all sorts of cool stuff emerging, and I’m hoping you’re creating “good AI bees” that positively pollinate rather than killer bees! But alas, I work in cybersecurity. So, the AI developments I pay attention to are how attackers exploit generative AI to make our lives more difficult. 

So, in this article, I’ll discuss the rise of adversarial AI, how we’re using AI to counter this challenge, and how we hope to enable you to do amazing things responsibly.

AI is expanding the horizons of what’s possible – for cyber threats

Let’s look at some examples of how adversaries use AI. 

Remember the SolarWinds attack of 2020? In case you don’t, let me remind you. The Russian state-sponsored group ATP29 compromised SolarWinds’ source code for their IT monitoring app. So, when SolarWinds sent updates, their customers were compromised. The attackers systematically worked through US government orgs, system integrators, and cybersecurity companies – around 100 high-value targets.

The interesting part is that ATP29 could have targeted around 3,000 companies, but they were limited by human resources to only 100 serial attacks before being caught. Imagine if, instead of relying on people, they had used AI to automatically execute 3,000 parallel attacks. That’s scary.

At Palo Alto, we’re thinking hard about this. Attacks are speeding up – our experiments show ransomware attackers could use automation to carry out attacks four to five times faster than they do today. 

Attackers are already getting faster, thanks to automation tools – and we’re getting faster at blocking them. Just this morning, my team’s researchers showed me how quickly we can use AI to anticipate what adversaries will do next. We do this proactively to retrain our security capabilities.

Despite everything that’s going on, I’m one of the rare optimists in the cybersecurity space. Most people dwell on the horrible threats, but I think AI provides more opportunity than risk – if we take advantage of it in the right way.

Better security with AI

Let me share a couple of examples of how we’ve used AI, which might spark ideas for how you could use it too. 

Reactive cybersecurity

For many years, whenever anyone in the cybersecurity industry uncovered a new attack, we’d generate a signature to detect and block it. This worked for known attacks but not zero-day or unseen attacks, since you can’t have a signature for the unknown. There was always a “patient zero” in this model of attack prevention. 

The cycle was to detect attacks, create signatures, and push signatures out. We got faster and faster at doing this – from weeks with floppy disks in the 90s, down to minutes. But we were still using this detect-update-respond model. 

The problem is that AI makes it possible for nearly every attack to be a zero-day attack. So how do we deal with zero-day attacks enabled by AI?
