Baseball Films

If anybody feels like watching a good baseball movie or documentary now that the season is over, here are some good ones I watched/rewatched recently:

The Rookie - Dennis Quaid stars in this movie about Jim Morris, a high school science teacher and baseball coach, who gets a second chance to fulfill his dream of becoming a Major League pitcher. (Based on a true story)

Moneyball - Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane in this movie based on the Oakland Athletics' turnaround to analytics, which changed the way the game is played. (Based on a true story)

Four Days in October - This documentary is about the 2004 ALCS when the Boston Red Sox came back and won the series after being down 3-0 to the Yankees; to this day, this is the only time in the game's history this has ever happened.

The Day the Series Stopped - This film documents the 1989 world series, often called the "Battle of the Bay" due to the teams being the San Francisco Giants vs. the Oakland Athletics. During the third game of the series, one of the worst earthquakes to ever hit California struck, leaving many dead and injured, but bringing together the community with the love of the sport.

The Sandlot - A true classic, this comedy about a group of ragtag kids who love playing baseball is a great watch for anybody who wants to laugh. (Based on a true story)

Hands Up by Joel G on YouTube is a very enjoyable webseries, and I LOVE these outfits that Margo and Ula wore, so I drew my fursona in them too. I believe I posted the first one a while back on this blog, but that's alright; it's part of this prompt!

The outfit came from a funny meme featuring a very well-dressed person with someone saying "some outfits gotta stay in the closet bro" and then a reply that was like "he's out here Wonkamaxxing and you want to put him in what, a snapback and hoodie? awful people". I, for one, admire the Wonkamaxxing.

in a similar vein. top fanfictions of all time ever 1) fundamental imperfection again. she's untouchable to ME idec. 2) well redacted from november let's not get into it just trust me when i tell you that shit went crazy. 3) reddie baseball au..... dear god please let's not get into it but that one was life changing and earth shattering. and i never finished it which is part of the reason it haunts me in the night. 4) i'll say it. the hunger games au.... that was a crazy experience tee posted a screenshot of it to make fun of it thinking there's no way it could possibly be good and then next thing we knew i was awake at 6am having just finished 80k words of insanity. you had to be there. no i'll never reread it to verify if it was actually good or if we had horrors brain rot, i don't need to know that!!! 5) did anyone else read that reddie fanfic where. it was like they went on a road trip to san fransisco i think. i think it was a popular fanfic at the time? or i might be wrong to assume that idk wy i think that actually. maybe it was just a rec from a popular blog. ok i don't remember. but it was really good. reddie fanfic was like really good you guys what was in the water... anyway yeah. now you know <3 if there were lesbian ships i liked that were popular enough to have good fanfic they'd be here. alas you're getting all men because that's the market :/

Sonic- Spinner (he always spin dashing)

Tails- Tinker (he started working on Sonics plane without permission)

Knuckles- Guard (do I need to explain?)

Normally when you wake up in the morning, you don’t think about the possibility of meeting an alternate version of yourself.

Apparently that’s what Tails thought of, because his series of decisions lead to him, his brothers, alternate versions of themselves, some gals named Amy and Cream, and some random ass kid named Chris sitting together in a circle talking about life and other stuff.

“Tails said that you two are his brothers, is that true?” Chris is the first to ask a question. Sonic nods “yep I’m a proud middle child to these two. I got adopted by a human couple and they decided that my bro squad will become literal and legal.” Spinner hums “huh never thought there’d be a reality where I have human parents. That’s kinda neat!”

Chris pipes up “so do you like… go to school?” Immediate groans from the 3.

Knuckles sneers “They expect me to know all these equations and barely give me any help. I have to learn everything on my own.. thankfully I made some friends who help me out. I greatly appreciate them.”

Sonic huffs “On the first day, they immediately called mom and dad and declared that I have something wrong with me. I’m no longer in that class.”

Tails sighs “it’s too easy! First grade sucks! I’m surrounded by kids my age, sure, but they can’t tie their shoes, they think potty jokes are peak humour, AND THERES THIS ONE GIRL JANICE WHO FEELS THE NEED TO SHARE WITH ME THAT FOXES GO FAST.”

Everyone in the room chuckles as Tails continues “WOW I, A FOX, DID NOT KNOW THAT! THANK YOU JANICE FOR ALSO INFORMING ME THAT FOXES ARE GREAT PARENTS KNOWING FULL WELL I AM ADOPTED.”

“Thats horrible! She should be ashamed!” Cream says. Tails goes “oh yea she sure felt ashamed when I tattled on her.

Sonic suddenly gets this wide grin. Knuckles and Tails’ eyes widen in panic, knowing what’s about to come.

“I guess you can say-“

“Sonic no” Tails pleads.

“Hedgehog, I suggest you pause this instant.” Knuckles demands.

Their pleas fall on deaf ears.

“I guess you can say you’re a… tattle tails?”

Ba dum cchhh

Spinner instantly starts wheezing like it’s the greatest joke he’s ever heard in his Goddamn life. Chuck also gets a chuckle. Cream giggles! Everyone else? Hoping the portal gun is finished quicker so they can send this guy home.

“I’m gonna change the topic. What are your parents like? Are they nice? What do they do for a living? How did this happen? We need details.” Amy suggests.

“Father is a sheriff and Mother is a veterinarian. Both occupations greatly help the community. They took us all in despite bringing all that trouble with us. I believe they are some of the kindest souls the universe has to offer.” Knuckles thinks very highly of his parents. Sonic and Tails nod in agreement.

Sonic begins “They adopted me first! It’s a super long story, but to make it short, the tragic death of my first guardian Longclaw sent me to live on earth. I think I was like 2??? Almost 3?? Anyway, I was pretty much alone for 10 years because I was scared that someone would hurt me for my power. I watched Mom and Dad all the time. I formed a bond with them without them even knowing I was there. After an incident during solo baseball, I was hunted down by Robotnik. I ended up teaming with Dad, who I called Donut Lord at the time and we went on a road trip to find the rings I dropped in San Fransisco, then we kicked butt, and Dad punched Eggman twice. Then Mom and Dad fell in love with me and gave me a room in their attic. A home. Then one day 9 months later, I’m Home Aloneing it in my house, then Knuckles and Eggman rudely break in, ruin the wall, then as Knux has me pinned against a tree in a chokehold, Miles Tails Prower, king of first introductions, came barreling through the fence in a stolen cop car and hit Knuckles.”

“Wait. Slow down. Other me hit Knuckles with a car?” Tinker is experiencing several emotions, and despite having an extensive vocabulary, can’t give a word to describe one.

“Do not worry, other brother. I was not injured. It was merely a tap.” Knuckles says.

“So we’re just gonna gloss over the fact that Tails committed grand theft auto?” Chuck said, a little concerned.

Tails shrugs “hey, nobody was using it!”

Sonic stutters “that’s still a crime, buddy.”

“Well how was I supposed to know that?”

“Isn’t it common sense to.. not steal?”

“I’m 6, what do I know?”

“Miles, you hotwired a car, and built your own line of high tech weaponry.”

“That’s unimportant.”

The story continues! Sonic briefly explains the events following.

“Mom and Dad invited Knuckles and I to stay with them and Sonic once the house was fixed. I was so nervous.. waiting for the letter to come in the mail that we got adopted. When the letters came, I think Sonic cried more than the rest of us!” Tails giggles, and Sonic brings up his hand in a stop motion “I did NOT cry.”

Knuckles grins “you did. You cried like a little baby hedgehog.” Sonic huffs as everyone either coos or laughs.

“HEY HEY SHUSH. SHUT UP. SHUT UP. I will kill you. And then kill you again.” Sonic points at Knuckles menacingly. Knuckles laughs “Sure, Sonic.”

Guard has one question on his mind “You mentioned going Super but didn’t elaborate on what you did besides the fact you beat Eggman.”

Sonic is suddenly much better “oh yea, after I became god, I summoned the universes greatest chilli dog!”

Guard chokes on air “yOU USED THE MASTER EMERALDS SACRED POWER TO SUMMON A STREET SNACK?!”

“Hey, it isn’t a street snack if it came from the sky, you dingus.” Sonic makes a good point.

When that portal gun is finished, Knuckles picks up Sonic and yeets him home first. Tails hugged everyone before going. Except Spinner and Guard who just gave him head pats. One day he will get a hug. One day.

Art Hickman (on drums) and His Orchestra (~1919)

Arthur Hickman's Californian dance ensemble - the first professional band to incorporate trace elements of jazz, some say - landed their first gig entertaining the San Fransisco Seals, a baseball team, at their training camp in 1913.

That led to a stint at the St Francis Hotel after the hotel manager heard the group play. They performed in the Rose Room, which would lend its name to Hickman's best known composition.

Here, their reputation bloomed, leading to a gig as the house band for the San Fransisco World Fair in 1915, and eventually paving the way for prestigious outings to New York four years after that.

Hickman returned to California in the early 1920s, playing in San Fransisco (including a return to the St Francis Hotel) as well as Los Angeles. Ill health forced him to step away from his band in the latter half of the 20s however, eventually claiming his life when he as 43 in January 1930.

Origins of The New York Giants Football Team by Braeden Loe

The New York Giants are an NFL team that was founded in 1925. It is important to note that in the 1920s-1940s, Baseball was the most popular sport in America so a common trend with many modern day NFL teams in this era was mimicking the names of the baseball team names in order to gain more notoriety and publicity. Because the Giants baseball team at the time had not yet migrated to San Fransisco, they were still known as the New York Giants. This wouldn't change until much later when the team moved to San Fransisco and became the San Fransisco Giants.

During the early decades of the New York Giants, they played on the Polo grounds located in upper Manhatten, where they would designate as their training and playing grounds. The New York Football Giants would not find much success during the games in the early days as the would lose 14–0 to the Frankford Yellow Jackets but would be recgonized as one of the greats in the early football era winning championships in 1927, 1934, and 1938.

The team would be purchased for $500 by Tim Mara in 1925, and he would split the team ownership between his two sons sometime in the 1930s. Tim Mara’s family and subsequent successors would own the giants from 1925 until 1991. The Mara family still retains ownership of the Giants today and is only beaten by the famed Chicago bears as being the only team in the NFL to have the longest family dynasty ownership claimed in 1921, 4 years earlier. It is important to note that a fued within the family led to a faction of the family selling their shares of the team to Preston Robert Tisch.

The New York Giants would move from the Polo grounds to the famed New York Yankees stadium in which was most likely met with glee by the Mara family, fans, and players alike. The Yankee stadium move would prove to be a great success to the New York Giants as they would win the fourth NFL championship during this period. The New York Giants also have a claim to fame as the first African American player to earn their way into Pro Football Hall of Fame, Emlen Tunnel, would play 11 seasons with the Giants.

Many greats within the NFL have had time within the New York Giants such as the famed Tom Landry who coached the defense and Vince Lombardi who coached the offense. These respective coaches would become legends in the NFL for their excellence in coaching within the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers.

In 1958, the NFL championship came down to a game between the New York Giants and the Baltimore colts which would be a closely watched and exciting game by many at the stadium and those lisetning on the radio with nail biting anxiety and excitement. This game is arguable at the beginning of the popularity growth of the NFL as the Baltimore Colts would defeat the New York Giants 23–17 in an exciting game that would only end in overtime.

The New York Giants continue to be a widely followed football team due to their fame and location. While they do not play directly in New York, they actually play in Metlife Stadium located in East Rutherford New Jersey and share their stadium with the second New York based football team, many New Yorkers identify closely with them. New York is not short of exciting sports teams and shares two football teams and two baseball teams.

In regards to why they are called the New York Giants, some accreddit the name to the tall skyscrapers in New York or the coach referring to his players as giants. The widely accepted theory is that they got their name in order to mimic the New York Giants Baseball team in order to gain more fans and more following. Whatever the case, the New York Giants will, for the most part, always be the most followed football team in New York and surrounding areas. New York state is home to a total of three football teams, which I will cover in later blog posts.
