Dr. William Lineas Maples (March 31, 1869 - 1943) a physician and musician, was born in Sevierville, Tennessee. The son of Edward Maples and Martha Jane Runions, he graduated in the first class of the segregated high school in Knoxville.

He taught high school for one year in Austin, Tennessee, and entered medical school at Howard University. He received an MD and returned to Knoxville to establish a medical practice. The Spanish-American War in 1898 interrupted that practice as he joined the Army’s medical unit of the all-Black Third Regiment of the North Carolina Volunteers. He ended his service a year later and returned to Knoxville to resume his practice.

In 1900 agents for the Hawaii Commercial and Sugar Company on Maui traveled through Tennessee and Alabama looking for workers for Hawaii’s plantations. They sought a physician to staff the hospital that would serve the contract workers. He was recruited as the anesthetist for the hospital. His older brother, Samuel, a lawyer accepted a position as a representative of the Black contract laborers recruited for the HC&S plantations.

He married Sadie, who accompanied him on the voyage to Hawaii. He was assigned to the hospital in Puunene and for the first few years lived in plantation housing provided to the medical staff. They had not planned on staying in Hawaii for more than two contracts, or six years, but he increasingly found the work professionally satisfying. The hospital had installed a new operating room comparable to any found in a small, modern hospital in Tennessee.

They had two daughters, Gladys and Elizabeth, and the family became active in the community, especially after they purchased a house in the town of Wailuku in 1905. He opened Maples Drug Store in April 1905.

In 1911 he became manager of the Navarro orchestra in Wailuku. He wrote the Puunene school song in 1931.

He was the first African American university-trained physician to practice in Hawaii and remained on Maui working for the Hawaii Commercial and Sugar Company until his retirement in 1931. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

           FASHION CREDITS: “911″ MUSIC VIDEO PART I

Lady Gaga is expanding the world of “Chromatica”! Yesterday, she released the highly anticipated music video for her third single “911″, which was directed by award-winning director Tarsem Singh. On set photography by Mason Poole.

The video reveals itself to be an elaborate hallucination, as Gaga suddenly snaps back into reality in an ambulance after being involved in a serious accident and cries out that she forgot her pills.

Over 10 looks styled by Nicola Formichetti and Marta Del Rio with tailoring by Samuel Ososki and Alex Navarro. Hair by Frederic Aspiras and makeup by Sarah Tanno-Stewart using Haus Laboratories. Nails by Miho Okawara.

Instead of focusing on the runway, Gaga and her team sought out new designers and one-of-a-kind pieces. 

Central Saint Martins alum Johannes Warnke, who I introduced you to the other day, contributes the opening look: a slinky, asymmetrical, red-to-white ombré dress and matching cape that Gaga wears while passed out in the sand dunes. 

Inspired by his “Windows of Perception” graduate collection, this piece was further customized by the Haus of Gaga.

The Ombra red mesh mask with latex trim by Dead Lotus Couture shields her eyes.

She accessorized the look with a pair of House of Emmanuele’s Venus pearl and crystal long drop earrings...

...and pearls by Lillian Shalom wrapped around her wrist (similar pictured).

The white gloves, she mostly wears throughout the entire video, ruby anklet, lapis lazuli cabochon ring (similar pictured) and Nepali Tibetan flower turquoise and coral ring (similar bracelet pictured) are all from the stylist’s kit.

Even all the background characters were a feast for the eyes.

The horse rider, we see at the beginning and end of the video, is wearing a full outfit from the archive of Western Costume Co. and a custom Gladys Tamez Millinery black felt velour hat similar to Jodorowsky’s hats in “El Topo”.

The pillow boy aka. car driver is wearing an Arabesque dress and embroidered slippers sourced from Universal Costume Department, along with a leather, wood and bamboo corset belt by San Francisco-based designer Lance Victor Moore!

Each of the four firefighters dressed as popes in custom Garo Sparo exaggerated papal capes, mozzetas and mitre headpieces!

Each of the tangerine & yellow versions of religious vestments, high-collared gowns detailed with embroidery, and towering headpieces would have been impressive on its own but combined, they fill the video with a spectacular chorus of oddities.

Everything only gets wilder from here. The saint/perimedic wears the finale look from Richard Quinn’s “House of Quinn” Fall/Winter 2020 collection - an impeccably embroidered cape trimmed with feathers, and a hi-lo skirt in dove-colored silk taffeta.

If that wasn’t already enough, check out that beaded mitre headpiece created by Agnieszka Osipa (similar pictured). The shoes are from Universal Costume Department.

Our other paramedic rocks a bespoke Laurel DeWitt black & gold metal chain fringe shoulder piece and matching belt, and black wide-leg pants by costume designer and maker Jim Tanner.

In the short slow-motion scene, we can spot the Horus lightweight manipulated and treated cotton cloak by Gelareh!

Our crying lady is wearing a full custom purple satin dress and veil, custom-made by Jim Tanner along with a vintage gold plate necklace from Western Costume Co.

L.O.V.E. these! The choir aka. witnesses are all dressed in bespoke BCALLA show-stopping blue metallic tapestry velvet cloaks trimmed with blue rope, and pleated white high collar blouses.

The king is seen in a gold metal headpiece custom-made for the video by designer Marianna Harutunian, who shouldn’t be a stranger to you!

He’s also rocking the House of Emmanuele Countess crystal necklace on his eyes, a Laurel DeWitt gold metal fishnet and rope outfit, a black fur cape from Universal Costume Department and gold metal cuffs by Gelareh.

The two police officers wear custom Howie B. floor-length midnight-blue satin-trimmed velvet ponchos and insane headpieces.

Global architectural design firm, Populous, has been selected as the architect for a new 65,000-seat stadium for Liga MX football club, Tigres UANL, in the club’s home state of Nuevo León, Mexico

The new stadium will be located on a site close to Tigres’ current home, Estadio Universitario, meaning the club will not need to relocate during construction and will retain its position at the University with direct transport links to the downtown area. The project is expected to employ 60,000 people directly and indirectly and will be privately funded.

In line with Populous’ mission to create multi-use venues, the new stadium design is centred around a retractable pitch that will allow a range of events to be hosted, from soccer and athletics to concerts and American football. The mixed-use scheme also incorporates retail, hospitality, hotel rooms, offices, and classrooms for the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), facilitating year-round usage and creating a socially responsible and financially sustainable venue. The stadium design features separate changing rooms for Tigres’ men’s and women’s teams, creating a shared home for Tigres UANL and Tigres Femenil.

Plans for the stadium, which is due to be delivered in 2025, were unveiled at a press conference on 14 January 2022, with the Governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, in attendance alongside representatives of the club, Populous, Cemex, UANL, Sinergia Deportiva and Juego de Pelota.

Christopher Lee, Managing Director – EMEA, Populous, said: “We are proud to be part of this exciting project to create a new home for Tigres that will allow them to continue to flourish at the very highest level. Our design builds on the club’s rich history at Estadio Universitario to deliver a stadium that will come to hold a special place in the hearts of the fans and indeed the wider community. We look forward to continuing to work closely with UANL, Tigres, Cemex and Juego de Pelota Inc. to deliver a new sporting landmark for Nuevo León and Mexico.”

César Esparza, Principal Partner of Juego de Pelota, said: “There is going to be another setting for concerts and sport. It is a stadium prepared to host all sports, this stadium will be the postcard of Nuevo León… It will not happen that the new stadium will be expensive, if it has that capacity it will allow us to create different price levels for events, becoming inclusive for all people.”

Mauricio Doehner, a member of Tigres’ parent company Sinergia Deportiva, said: “Today Tigres is internationally recognised and we are always striving for more. Of course we deserve a new stadium, it will be the headquarters in this new era. Today, Tigres is not only a benchmark in Mexican soccer, but also in the international one.”

Mid-century modern design picked up on the second wave of modern design trends in the 20th century.

The first was 1930s Streamline Moderne, which rocketed out of the Arts & Crafts and Art Deco era with sleek, smooth curves and bright metalwork.

Hard to imagine this was from the thirties.

Or this, in the Samuel-Navarro House.

Yeah, we still haven’t caught up yet.

In fact, much of what you associate a traditional 1950s diner with, such as chrome-colored wraparound countertops, started in that era.

"THE GROOVIEST”

The second wave carried out of a postwar boom, eschewing ranch and traditional styles for large format, big windows, steel, rectilinear forms that we have come to know and love as mid-century modern.

Much of this look carried over and still looks modern and futuristic (”Jetsons-style”) in the present day.

The famous Stahl House.

The third wave of modernism came in the 1980s and built on the two previous eras but added in more glitz and glamour - vast expanses of marble and glass, mirrors on everything.  Think office-building modern.  And of course, that look also carries into the present time.

Yes, well.

VAPORWAVE.

The following building is a 1950 residence from Raphael Soriano, a famous mid-century modern architect who got his start during the Streamline Moderne era.  In the 1980s, futurist Alvin Toffler and his wife Heidi purchased the residence and significantly renovated it, reflecting the modernism of that era.

So this is a rare residence in that it reflects the modernism of all three eras of the 20th century in one building.

The entry is simple and spartan with marble and steel.  Little is given away to what’s inside.

Note how the entry reflects what’s on the other side of the door: same lights, same high windows, same floors, same walls - blurring the illusion between indoors and outdoors.

Yep, it’s got those 80s mirrors alright, as well as the white-on-white-on-white-god-help-you-if-you-spill-something palette.

There’s so much empty space here, it’s almost anxiety-building.

The wall of glass extends into a bedroom with an 80s marble fireplace, and even more open space (maybe some chairs?)

The bathroom is an 80s palooza, and to be fair, this must have looked like hot shit back in the day.

The 80s modernist designers clearly borrowed from Streamline Moderne/Art Deco - check out those sconces on the mirrors!

Indoor-outdoor is blurred yet again in the guest room, which I think might be the nicer bedroom in the house.

Chair carries over that Streamline look.

The kitchen is, well, the worst of many eras, with 50s Formica countertops and Eighties tile floors.

Needs an update, and not subway tile!

Now THAT is a dramatic staircase, spiraling up into the second floor like a nautilus.

Probably the best view in the house - pool and expansive gardens, all the plush landscaping Bel Air has to offer.

Vast open space here adds room for an office.

The Tofflers renovated the original design to add a loft library up here, and what a library it is, taking full advantage of expansive, spaceship-like windows.

Not much of a stretch of the imagination to think this library is more well-stocked than some universities.

The Tofflers were self-proclaimed futurists after all, I could imagine that requires some reading.

From this view it looks like an art gallery, and perhaps it’s the best view of the house.

I love modern farmhouses especially, but I am happy to feature a healthy diversity of architecture and interior design styles on Home Bunch. I have always done this because I am a stronger believer in that we need to see many different homes to find out what really works for us and for our home.

The exterior is stucco, Senergy 330 Ultra White – a  very similar paint color would be Sherwin Williams Oyster White SW 7637, which is a creamy, “seashell” white.

How gorgeous is this black arched metal front door? Paint color is similar to Sherwin Williams SW 6258 Tricorn Black.

              LADY GAGA AT THE MTV VMAS 2020 PART I

Lady Gaga was obviously the best dressed of the night at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards and she had not one, not two, but NINE different looks throughout the show.

She was the big winner of the night, taking home four awards including “Artist of the Year” and “Song of the Year”. She also was presented with the first-ever Tricon Award and she gave a powerful speech about the difficult year we’re all going through.

Styling by Nicola Formichetti and Marta Del Rio with assistance of Katrina Ld, Candace Lawrence, Garrett Ives and Juliana. Tailoring by Samuel Ososki, Alex Navarro and Conrad Muscarella. Makeup by Sarah Tanno-Stewart using Haus Laboratories, hair by Frederic Aspiras using Joico and nails by Miho Okawara. This is just the first part of our VMAs series, so let’s delve!

Because of the pandemic, every star had to have their own white carpet either at their home or studio of choice. And Gaga made sure she was the brightest of ‘em all!

She took us to space in this otherworldly AREA Fall/Winter 2020 couture metallic silver quilted heart-shaped parka which she accessorized with a custom Conrad Muscarella clear glass helmet.

Let’s get to the jewelry shall we? Gaga dripped in diamonds, starting off with this custom Edward Avedis petite sine wave gold diamond necklace.

All of her rings, diamond bangle and diamond curb link white gold bracelet are signed by jewelry designer Dena Kemp, a new name in her closet!

One of her rings is this square-cut emerald with diamond frame and band.

Enjoy thise close-up of her Miho Okawara grey & teal ombré stiletto nails!

The look was completed with the Pleaser Beyond-1020 black faux leather platform ankle boots, which she wore almost throughout the entire show.

We have officially landed on planet Chromatica.

Gaga looked absolutely stunning when taking the award for “Best Collaboration” in this stunning ombré technicolor fringed body sculpture, custom-made for her by the incomparable Iris van Herpen who collaborated with artist Davy Evans.

She matched it with her Pleaser boots and a custom Cecilio Castrillo pink leather muzzle mask.

My absolute favorite look of the night is this Christoper John Rogers Fall/Winter 2020 Baja Blast emerald-green silk taffeta pannier ball skirt and cropped blouse which I’ve been eyeing ever since seeing it at New York Fashion Week!

A new designer on the map is San Francisco-based Lance Victor Moore, who specializes in all kinds of Steampunk-inspired accessories. He was responsible for this insane crimson leather harness mask with dramatic studded horns.

Gaga also wore some Dena Kemp earrings and House of Emmanuele’s Tribalism crystal and venus pearl statement necklace.

Gaga’s Sirenia bangle was signed by jeweler German Kabirski.

A naturally shaped and impactful bangle is crowned with a pale green amethyst. Black rhodium has been shaped to create an organic circle. Delicate gold details join them together in their raw beauty for the wearer to share.

The Italian-American songstress also rocked a bunch of gold rings by Lillian Shalom!

She went for the Da Vinci armor ring, Galileo armor ring, Dalí midi finger tip ring and Alta ring.

Next, Gaga came to collect her award for “Artist of the Year”, looking like a vision in silver and white in a full look from Valentino’s “Of Grace and Light” Fall/Winter 2020 Haute Couture collection, a show like no other: intensely beautiful white dresses blown into full or intensely elongated shapes by Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli, then wildly colored with projections of digital patterns by SHOWStudio photographer and film-maker, Nick Knight.

Her ensemble included a yaaards long white tulle and organdy coat, and a silver sequin-embroidered second-skin catsuit.

The silver metal mesh mask, she wore gracefully, is a bespoke creation by Prêt-à-Couture label Maison Met! Her jewelry is by Dena Kemp.

Our girl completed the look with a custom white faux leather version of these Pleaser Xtreme-1020 platform booties.

As the first winner of the “Tricon” award, Gaga took the stage in a custom Candice Cuoco metallic liquid chrome ruffled winged train coat, which she paired with her Valentino catsuit, Maison Met mask and incredible Manuel Albarran silver metal choker and bra.

Her avant-garde Jellyfish sculpted chrome steel mask, she styled as a crown, is another custom creation by Lance Victor Moore.

Gaga was dripping in Lillian Shalom jewelry! She wore her Da Vinci armor ring, Voltaire pearl armor ring, Galileo armor ring, Lux and Saturnus orbital rings, Khepri ring and Vita ring.

RECAP A Technique for Producing Ideas By James Webb Young <- READ THIS

Gathering the raw materials for a project; the future belongs to the curious. Experience new things. Be a curious octopus. Jessica Hische; let yourself be inspired by everything else that isn’t design. "Spend time falling in love with things that aren’t design.”

Digesting the new material. Think about it, experience it. You need to understand the content you’re designing for, or it won’t make sense to the people consuming it. Type things up, sketch them out. Develop your own understanding, digest the material.

Unconscious processing. Make no effort of a direct nature!! Sleep on it, do something different.

The A-Ha Moment. (A myth?) serendipitous, out of nowhere an idea will appear.

Idea Meets Reality. The cold, grey dawn of the morning after. Making the thing and showing it to other people. Validation.

RITUALS OF PREPARATION. Aristotle talked about how excellence is a habit not an act. Stravinsky played a Bach every morning before he started. Stefan and his year sabbatical every seven years. You need to find your own creative habit. You need a creative environment that is habit forming. Distractions and fears; trepidations before starting a new project. Just! Get! Started! Fears; people will laugh at me, someone has done it before, I have nothing to say or make (IRRELEVANT), I will upset someone I love, once executed, the idea will not be as good as it was in my mind. Just wise UP. Keep refining it.

Bible; nothing new under the sun.

Use creative triggers; watching a movie? Steven Universe. Stephen King has his water or tea, sits down between 8am and 8:30am, has his vitamin pill, music, sit in the same seat and have the papers all arranged. Everything is in its right place. ROUTINE.

ESTABLISH HARD EDGES TO YOUR DAY. Routine is so important.

Early steps; do your research, ideas, ideas, ideas! Get up and get out! Nurture your ideas. Scratching; formulating your ideas etc etc. Where do you get your ideas? Everywhere! A lot of ideas will come from things that interest you. Looking at mentors and heroes, they will inspire you!! Harry Beck designed the underground tube maps. He was actually and electrical engineer. It’s important to look at other people’s work: not to condone plagiarism. It can be worthwhile copying a piece to understand how it was created. Reading. Read everything man. Condition your brain.

“The man who does not read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.” - Mark Twain. Plan for success! Scaffolding bro.

PERFECTION IS A KILLER. Finished, not perfect. Things don’t have to be flawless before you can go for feedback. Feedback is so important.

Inspiration vs imitation. It’s okay to copy people’s work; using pieces to practice and develop understanding of techniques etc. Master - apprentice. Rinse and Repeat. Focus on learning the skill as opposed to focusing on the actual creating. Focused copying. Break things apart, analyse them and recreate. When you focus on icons and deconstruct them you build an understanding. Not everything you make should be on the internet. Don’t insta someone else’s work. It can go on your blog ofc.

Diversify your inspiration. History is important. Train your eye. Identify other people’s work. Immerse yourself in inspiration. Everybody knows everybody and that’s why you can’t make derivative works. Just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s ethical. Plagiarism is illegal. Just because something isn’t illegal doesn’t mean it’s ethical.

When you create something original, it gives you so much pride. Give birth to the idea, nurture it and send it out into the world.

Mind mapping is a very useful tool when it comes to figuring out ideas. Simple; start out with a word, ten lines outward and go from there. Use word association to generate ideas! Finding illogical connections. Make a new idea. Unrelated things and put them together.

What is your skillset? Focus on that to keep on top of the project.
