Spreadtrum processors primer: What you need to know Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung and Huawei might rule the mobile processor roost, but that doesn’t mean they’re the only players in town. In the past few years, we’ve also seen another player emerge in the form of China’s Spreadtrum, mainly gaining ground in the entry-level sector. Spreadtrum, founded in 2001, has made waves recently thanks to a high-profile partnership with Intel to produce new chips. But you may have used a Spreadtrum-powered device before, with Samsung being its most high-profile customer. In fact, we see Spreadtrum chipsets in Samsung’s Z series of Tizen phones (as seen above), the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, Galaxy Tab E, and the Galaxy Pocket 2, to name several models. So it’s fair to say that the company isn’t a fly-by-night player in the market. What should you expect from Spreadtrum processors though? We put together a beginner’s guide to their SoCs. The low-end Spreadtrum chips Spreadtrum’s first foray into low-end chips, starting in 2012, yielded chips that were lacking features, even back then. Some chips in their initial lineup lacked 3G capabilities, but we did see single-core A7 or dual-core A5 CPUs and single or dual-core Mali 400 GPUs. These SoCs went toe to toe with the likes of Qualcomm’s S4 Play chip, seeing adoption by the likes of Samsung (Galaxy Pocket 2). Once the company got moving into the 3G era proper, we saw the firm delivering a bunch of quad-core A7 designs in the low-end category (with the exception of the dual-core SC7727S). Don’t expect A53 cores here at all, let alone the new A55 cores. Editor's Pick A closer look at ARM’s new Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 CPUs ARM recently unveiled its next-generation CPU cores, the Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55, which are the first processors to support the company’s also new DynamIQ multi-core technology. The A75 is the successor to ARM’s high performance A73 … Quad-core A7 trappings aside, we still see the now obsolete Mali 400 GPU being used in these chips. The Mali configurations range from single-core (SC7727S) to dual-core (SC7730A, SC7730S, SC7731G, SC8831G) and quad-core (SC7735S, SC8735S, SC8835S). A rather interesting observation in this tier is that the number of GPU cores seems to correlate with the camera and video support. The single-core SC7727S tops out at 720p for video support and 8MP for camera size. Meanwhile, the SoCs with dual-core graphics offer up 1080p video/8MP camera support, while the SoCs with quad-core GPUs offer 1080p video and cameras up to 13MPs. SC7727S SC9830 Snapdragon 212 (MSM8909AA) Mediatek MT6582 CPU 2x Cortex-A7 @ 1.2Ghz 4x Cortex-A7 @ 1.5Ghz 4x Cortex-A7 @ 1.3Ghz 4x Cortex-A7 @ 1.3Ghz GPU Mali 400 MP1 Mali 400 MP2 Adreno 304 Mali 400 MP2 Cameras 8MP single 13MP single Up to 16MP 13MP single Process 28nm 28nm 28nm 28nm There are three other peculiar chips in this category that we haven’t mentioned, with the first being the dual-core A7 SC9820. Featuring a single-core Mali 400 GPU, support for 5MP cameras and 720p video viewing, the SC9820 actually supports LTE. The other two peculiar chips in this bracket are the SC9830A and SC9850, being quad-core A7 designs with LTE capabilities, 1080p video decoding and support for up to 13MP cameras. The former offers a dual-core Mali 400 GPU while the latter delivers newer but single-core Mali T820 graphics. Notable phones: We’ve seen a couple of major brands opt for these SoCs, with high-profile devices like the Samsung Z1 (SC7727S) and the Samsung Galaxy J3 2016 (SC9830). Believe it or not, but the firm’s low-end SC9820 (dual-core A7) actually powers the Nokia 3310 4G. TL;DR: These chips are basically the equivalent of Qualcomm’s 32-bit Snapdragon 200 and 400 series in many ways. So that means quad-core A7 CPUs (for the most part), camera support topping out at 13MPs and possibly packing LTE. Don’t bet on the latter though. The Mali-400 GPUs are very old right now, with the quad-core variant being the only one to compare favourably to the Adreno 305 in the Snapdragon 400. But the GPU is competitive with the low-end Snapdragon 200. In any event, Qualcomm and Mediatek have long moved from quad-core A7 designs to 64-bit A53 designs in this price category — at least for the most part. Mid-range This is going to be an extremely brief category because Spreadtrum’s only chip that qualifies as a traditional mid-range processor is the SC9860GV. And it hasn’t been used in any phones. So what qualifies as mid-range these days then? Well, for the past two or three years, that’s meant a phone with an octacore A53 chipset for starters (see MediaTek’s MT675x range, the Helio P-series and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 43x, 61x, 62x and 63x series). Spreadtrum’s SoC fits the bill here. Spreadtrum hasn't had much success in the mid-range tier, seeing adoption at the low-end instead We also see LTE connectivity and a GPU that, while significantly slower than today’s flagships, gives two or three year old flagships a run for their money. Yep, the SC9860GV packs a Mali T880 MP4 (the same chip and core count as the Huawei P9 and Mate 8). In fact, the T880 was also used by the Galaxy S7 range, in MP12 flavour. The chipset, which was first unveiled at MWC 2016, also sports dual-camera support, a 16nm FinFET manufacturing process, HEVC encode/decode and 4K recording/playback. So why haven’t we seen any phones adopting this? SC9860GV Snapdragon 625 Mediatek Helio P20 CPU 4x Cortex-A53 @ 2Ghz 4x Cortex-A53 @ 1.25Ghz 8x Cortex-A53 @ 2Ghz 8x Cortex-A53 @ 2.3Ghz GPU Mali T880 MP4 Adreno 506 Mali T880 MP2 Camera 13MP+13MP dual or 26MP single 13MP+13MP dual or 24MP single 24MP Process 16nm 14nm 16nm TL;DR: Spreadtrum’s only traditional 64-bit mid-range chip ticks all the boxes for a great budget processor on paper, but it seems like the company was late to the party. It doesn’t hurt that the Snapdragon 625 ticked all these boxes and added a smaller 14nm process for better power efficiency. MediaTek’s Helio P series has also been a firm fixture in scores of mid-range Chinese smartphones for almost two years now, affecting Spreadtrum’s momentum in this price bracket. Look at the GPU and you’ve got a match for Huawei’s Kirin 950, while confidently trading blows with the Snapdragon 625’s Adreno 506 GPU. A pity we didn’t get to see it in a production device. Spreadtrum’s top-end chips Much like Spreadtrum’s mid-range category, it’s slim pickings at its top-end bracket, but what interesting pickings nonetheless. Because both of the chips are essentially octacore versions of Intel’s Atom SoCs, using eight Airmont cores. It doesn’t hurt that both of the chips (SC9853i and SC9861G-IA) are built on Intel’s 14nm manufacturing process too. Fortunately, these chips are in at least two smartphones already, as Leagoo’s T5C and the LS9718 from little-known brand Senwa feature the SC9853i. Announced in August 2017 and launched a few months later, the SC9853i packs those eight aforementioned Airmont cores, but also includes a dual-core version of the ageing Mali T820 graphics chip. Sigh, you can’t win them all, can you? Otherwise, the chip also supports up to 16MP+8MP dual cameras, but we’re not sure about display resolution. It’s also noteworthy that 4K recording isn’t guaranteed with this chip, offering 1080p instead. Editor's Pick 5G battle heats up as Intel lays out plans The development of 5G is presenting business opportunities not only for those building next-generation network technologies, such as Huawei and ZTE, but also for those designing components for future consumer and business products. Processor and … The SC9861G-IA (announced in March) seems a little better on the spec sheet, packing the octacore Airmont cores but also delivering a 2014-era PowerVR GT7200 GPU, 2560×1600 display resolution, 18:9 screen ratios, 4K/30fps HEVC encoding/decoding and 13MP dual-camera/26MP single camera support. SC9853I SC9861G-IA Snapdragon 625 Snapdragon 845 CPU 8x Intel Airmont cores @ 1.8Ghz 8x Intel Airmont cores @ 2Ghz 8x Cortex-A53 @ 2Ghz 8x Kryo 385 @ 2.8Ghz GPU Mali T820 MP2 PowerVR GT7200 Adreno 506 Adreno 630 Camera 16MP+8MP dual 13MP+13MP dual or 26MP single 13MP+13MP dual or 24MP single 16MP+16MP dual or 32MP single Process 14nm 14nm 14nm 10nm The one question though is whether the former SoC will indeed see mass buy-in from manufacturers. Intel’s x86 chips haven’t been in an Android phone for almost two years now, with this essentially being an unofficial Atom processor. But it’s not meant to be a one-off, as Intel CEO Bryan Kazanich says we can indeed expect “additional mobile platforms” as a result of this partnership. TL;DR: The SC9853i is an octacore Intel Atom chip, really. But don’t let that fool you into thinking it’ll be desktop-class. In fact, Leagoo’s own benchmarks claim it beats the MT6750 by 25% and 36% for single and multicore performance respectively. For the record, the MT6750 is one of MediaTek’s budget octacore offerings, essentially being an underclocked Helio P10 with the same core layout and GPU. It’s a bit concerning if that’s your benchmark rather than even 2016’s high-end chipsets, isn’t it? Heck, the Snapdragon 820 scores exponentially more than the MT6750 in single-core benchmarks alone. So Leagoo and Spreadtrum are essentially saying that the new SC9853i isn’t as good as two-year-old flagship silicon. To be fair, Leagoo’s senior vice president Zhijie Xie told us at MWC 2018 that the SC9853i was targeted at the Snapdragon 625. However, the Leagoo representative acknowledged that the performance was a “little bit low” in comparison. Where to next for Spreadtrum? The Intel relationship is certainly a big one and not a once-off. The introduction of the SC9853i is definitely a sign of intent from Spreadtrum that it’s aiming for the volume-shifting mid-range sector. “Spreadtrum, which is already working with various global brands, has been very meticulous or even picky to select its first SC9853i smartphone partner because its ambition has little tolerance for business mistakes,” read an excerpt from the partnership statement, calling Leagoo a partner which can “penetrate in the world mobile market (sic)”. Read: Why pay a thousand bucks for an iPhone X when you can pay $300 for an Android lookalike? Another question is whether they can secure enough buy-in from budget manufacturers, which traditionally have a cosy relationship with Qualcomm and Mediatek. More specifically, the move to team up with Leagoo also suggests that Spreadtrum, while trumpeting expansion, is hoping to carve out a slice of the tasty domestic mid-range pie in China. Spreadtrum's ambition has little tolerance for business mistakes Earning adoption in the Chinese budget sector also bodes well for success in emerging markets such as India and the African continent, where Chinese brands enjoy massive popularity. Take a look at Xiaomi in India or Huawei on the African continent for proof. As for the high-end smartphone sector? At this early stage it’s clear that the new chipsets are more of a mid-range product than anything truly top-end. A major 5G partnership Could we see flagship chipsets borne from this partnership then? I suppose it depends on how deep Spreadtrum can dig into Intel’s IP. But recent news that the duo are teaming up for 5G smartphones has made us sit and take notice. Editor's Pick 5G vs Gigabit LTE: the differences explained 5G is coming this year, if some carriers are to be believed. But you won't find a phone able to make use of 5G until at least 2019. Meanwhile, other networks and equipment manufacturers have been … “Integrating Intel’s strong technical expertise in modems with Unigroup Spreadtrum & RDA’s solid experience in chipset design, the companies will collaborate on 5G and develop Spreadtrum’s first Android-based high-end 5G smartphone solution utilizing an Intel modem and Spreadtrum’s application processor technology,” read an Intel press release announcing the partnership in February. The companies are targeting a launch in the second half of 2019. It’s clear that the likes of Qualcomm and Huawei are leading the way for 5G technology, but the transition might prove to be a windfall for Spreadtrum as well. Nevertheless, Intel’s extended absence in the higher end arena means it’ll be a massive task to take on the current mobile SoC juggernauts. , via Android Authority http://bit.ly/2ItofBx

Sony Xperia XZ Review Roundup
Could the newest Sony’s mobile phone compete with Galaxy S7 edge or iPhone 7?
On October 2016, Sony launched the Xperia flagship Sony Xperia XZ, which is the last mobile phone of Sony in this year. The new flagship contains the merits of the former models and some new features. The device configures the old features, including the waterproof, fingerprint sensor, 3GB RAM and etc. What’s new? Xperia XZ is the first phone which adapts the 5-axis stabilization system and the triple image sensing technology.
5-axis stabilization system can stabilize five directions, including the X and Y axes, yaw, pitch and roll. The camera can keep stable even the user shakes the phone. However, this unique feature is only available in recording HD video.
The triple image sensing technology constitutes predictive hybrid AF, laser AF and RGB infrared sensor. These sensors help to capture image in different environments.
Can the flagship help Sony to undercut the rivals in the smartphone market? Let see the review roundup, which combine the opinions of different professional reviewers.
Forbes recommends this latest flagship of Sony. The reviewer mentioned the reasons why the flagship is worth to buy. “Sony’s decades of camcorder building really shows in the XZ’s 5-axis stabilization, which Sony has transported over from its DSLR, the A7 II. What that means is that the XZ can shoot oddly smooth video, even with exaggerated movements […]
Sony has added some extra bulk to the excellent Z5 camera. It’s largely the same 23MP Exmor RS sensor, but with new focussing abilities. The new laser autofocus and the predictive hybrid autofocus (which tracks movement and predicts where the subject will be when the picture is taken) work jointly for a faster focussing speed. Sony’s claiming that the XZ’s camera can focus in 0.03 seconds […]
Charging to your phone from 0% to 100% can damage the battery and reduce its overall life. However, many people leave their phones plugged in overnight, powering up the battery to the max. Sony is trying to combat this with its Battery Care feature […] For example, if you leave your XZ in to charge overnight, Battery Care will only charge your device to 90% before you wake up.”
Recombu mentioned the comparison between Xperia XZ and iPhone7 in different features. The reviewer said it is difficult to determine which is better. These two sexy phones can fulfil different customers’ needs.
“Sony's Xperia XZ flagship was announced a week before the iPhone7 and is just as sexy, boasting a fresh new Alkeleido metal design that’s impressively hardy. Fair enough, the Xperia is a bit of a handful and definitely not as easy to use one-handed as the dinkier iPhone7. But those curvy edges and the slender build still means it’s comfortable to clutch […]
You get a fingerprint sensor with both handsets too, for improved security. But only the Xperia XZ boasts expandable storage via a microSD memory card slot; with the iPhone7, you’re stuck with the on-board storage.
The Xperia XZ’s Full HD 5.2-inch screen is just as strong as the iPhone7’s 4.7-inch Retina panel […]
If you want to attach a pair of wired headphones, however, you’ll need to use Apple’s fiddly adapter with the iPhone 7; the 3.5mm jack is missing in action. Sony’s Xperia XZ not only has a jack, but also boasts support for Hi-Res audio, for true audiophiles.”
Pocket-lint compared the Xperia XZ, S7 and S7 edge in different parts, including design, display, camera, hardware and etc. The reviewer thinks that the performance of the new Sony’s flagship is not sufficient enough to compete with its rivals.
“The Galaxy S7 measures 142.4 x 69.6 x 7.9mm and weighs 152g, while the S7 edge measures 150.9 x 72.6 x 7.7mm and weighs 157g. This means the S7 is smaller and slimmer than the Xperia XZ, while the S7 edge is larger but still slimmer and offers a more exciting curved design than both the Xperia XZ and the Galaxy S7.
The Sony Xperia XZ comes with a 5.2-inch display and a Full HD resolution, meaning a pixel density of 424ppi […] The Samsung Galaxy S7 has a slightly smaller 5.1-inch flat display, ups the resolution to Quad HD and offers Super AMOLED technology. This means its pixel density sits at 577ppi for sharper and crisper images than what the Xperia XZ, as well as the potential for brighter and more vibrant colours […]
The Sony Xperia XZ has a 23-megapixel rear camera with two supporting sensors for colour and depth of vision, coupled with a 13-megapixel front camera […] The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge both feature a 12-megapixel rear camera, coupled with a 5-megapixel front camera. The rear has optical image stabilisation, along with phase detection autofocus and both the front and rear deliver excellent results.”
Expertreviews said that the XZ flagship is more extraordinary than competitors in some parts, like speed, screen and battery life. However, the reviewers also said the flagship can’t undercut rivals due to the expensive price.
“The design might not be to everyone's tastes, but the good news is that Sony's IPS screen technology remains first-class […] It might not look quite as saturated as Samsung's Super AMOLED screens on the S7 and S7 Edge, but colours are beautifully rich and vibrant. Videos, in particular, look fantastic.
Indeed, Sony's version of Android 6.0.1 felt silky smooth on the XZ, and web browsing was equally quick, showing few signs of stutter – even on pages laden with dozens of images […] This is faster than Samsung's S7 and S7 Edge as well as the LG G5.
The Xperia XZ has enough stamina to go the distance. Its 2,900mAh battery lasted an impressive 14hrs 32mins in our continuous video playback test with the screen set to our predefined brightness level of 170cd/m2. That puts it ahead of the LG G5 and HTC 10, but it’s still some way behind the S7, S7 Edge and OnePlus 3, all of which last several hours longer.”
To conclude, the Xperia XZ has its extraordinary features, including 5-axis stabilization system and triple image sensing technology. However, the flagship is quite expensive. Well, new technology is always expensive, isn’t it?

ZTE Axon 7 Review,Introduction,Design And Display | Axon 7 Zte The Best Smart Phone Ever. ZTE AXON 7 Unboxing- Flagship Wannabe? ZTE Axon 7: Top Budget Smartphone? ZTE AXON 7 "Real Review" The Best $400 Phone? ZTE Axon 7 Hands On: All Flagship, All Sound, Great Price | zte axon 7 camera test | zte axon 7 vs oneplus 3 | zte axon 7 vs s7 edge. Share Video...https://youtu.be/jUBKhDBOtsU The ZTE Axon 7 is a new Android phone with a sleek design, powerful specs and a reasonable unlocked price, which challenges the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and iPhone 7. And that last fact explains the confusing name of this successor to last year's ZTE Axon Pro (ZTE Axon Elite in the UK); ZTE has skipped right over the Axon 2 through Axon 6 between 2015 and 2016. See all ZTE Axon 7 deals The Chinese phone-maker is ambitiously trying to compete with the top phone manufacturers from the US and South Korea, so much so that it designed the phone outside of China, in the US. What we end up with is an Android Marshmallow smartphone with a polished metal design, rich-looking Quad HD display, booming front-facing speakers, and a load of software customizations of the kind often found in a more expensive handset. That's not all. It won't be long before the Axon 7 is updated to Android Nougat, and ZTE is touting it as the first phone compatible with Google Daydream VR, which is technically true – we're just waiting for Android 7.1 Nougat, which debuted with the Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL and Google DayDream View VR headset, to make that happen. The ZTE Axon 7 doesn't outclass Samsung's top-of-the-line camera in the Samsung Galaxy S7, or the elegantly curved look of the Galaxy S7 Edge – but it does come really, really close for the price. It's not quite inexpensive enough to make it onto our best cheap phones list, but it does now feature on TechRadar's updated best phones list. Let's break down why that is. ZTE Axon 7 Release date and price. The ZTE Axon 7 release date was July 27 in the US, it came to the UK and the rest of Europe in September, and finally launched in Australia in late November. You just won't find it everywhere, including in US carrier stores. You have to buy this phone unlocked on Amazon or another retailer and pay full price. It won't be sold at US carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or Sprint and you shouldn't expect price subsidies. While it technically has enough bands to support all US phone networks, it only works with AT&T and T-Mobile nanoSIM cards right now. Verizon and Sprint compatibility is due "possibly later in the year", essentially requiring the two CDMA carriers to flip a switch. All of the antennas are inside – this isn't just a GSM phone. The good news here is that if it works with your carrier, the ZTE Axon 7 is available at an attractive price. Packed with 64GB of internal storage it costs $399 (£359, AU$699). Plus, you won't have to deal with a pesky two-year (or any) contract or carrier app bloatware for that price. There's also a 128GB ZTE Axon 7, which includes the company's own take on a Force Touch display, an always-on screen and 6GB of RAM – which makes it potentially faster than the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge – but we'll have to see if that one ever makes it out of China; there's no price or availability information for Western markets yet. .............................................................................................................. Android is crying out for another OnePlus X At $250 the OnePlus X was nothing short of a revelation for mid-tier smartphones in 2015. It didn’t have all the bells and whistles, as its price would suggest, and the “small” 5-inch display and infuriating invite system wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it had a lot of good points. The powerful processing hardware, purist software, and incredibly nice build quality were all very compelling for the price. OnePlus hasn’t been alone in offering excellent hardware in the under $300 in the past few years. Motorola, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Meizu, and several others have all released some very notable handsets in this price bracket, each reinvigorating the low cost market at various points over the past three or four years. Blast from the past OnePlus X review Boasting a design overhaul and a compelling price point, OnePlus is hoping to marry the features of their most recent flagship, the OnePlus 2, with the value of its predecessor. Will the first mid-range offering … Now the mid-range phone market is gradually shifting upwards in price, with OEMs increasingly focusing on the “super mid-tier” or “cost-effective flagship” market, costing around $500 or more. See OnePlus’ latest offering or Samsung’s good, albeit overpriced, Galaxy A7 and A8. The classic, affordable mid-tier is disappearing. At $250 the OnePlus X was nothing short of a revelation for mid-tier smartphones back in 2015. Old vs the new There are still good handsets at this price point. It’s a competitive and vibrant market place for the budget conscious. However, it’s been a considerable length of time since the last breakout device, like the OnePlus X or the original Moto G, shook up the landscape. Editor's Pick OnePlus quickly debunks bogus rumor of a OnePlus X successor The rumor mill is abuzz with news that OnePlus might be working on the successor to 2015's OnePlus X. However, OnePlus was quick to dispel that rumor and throw in a little extra. According to the … Under Lenovo’s guidance, the budget Motorola line-up has become increasingly less inspiring. The design of the Moto G5S Plus is clunky, despite being made of metal. Its bezels are thick and just so 2016. Its processing hardware is not really any faster than the two year old OnePlus X. Likewise, the Samsung Galaxy A series has seen some flagship specs trickle down and nicer looking design, but the J range is still has lackluster processing components and display resolution. Delving into the specifics, the biggest differences between today’s $250 handsets and what the OnePlus X offered back in the day boils down two major bits of hardware: display resolution and processing power. The X certainly didn’t have everything. It lacked NFC and an IP rating, which can be found on cheaper phones these days. The table below gives a pretty good outline of what you got for your money then versus now. OnePlus X Moto G5S Plus Galaxy A3 2017 Nokia 6 Honor 7x Display 5.0-inch 1080p LCD 5.5-inch 1080p LCD 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED 5.5-inch 1080p LCD 5.9-inch 2160x1080 LCD SoC Snapdragon 801 4x Krait 400 @ 2.3 GHz Adreno 330 Snapdragon 625 8x Cortex-A53 @ 2.0 GHz Adreno 506 Exynos 7870 8x Cortex-A53 @ 1.6 GHz Mali-T830 MP1 Snapdragon 430 8x Cortex-A53 @ 1.4 GHz Adreno 505 Kirin 659 8x Cortex-A53 @ 2.3 / 1.7 GHz Mali-T830 MP2 RAM 3 GB 3 /4 GB 2 GB 3 / 4 GB 3 / 4 GB Storage 16 GB 32 / 64 GB 16 GB 32 / 64 GB 32 / 64 GB Cameras 13 MP rear 8 MP front Dual 13 MP rear 8 MP front 13 MP rear 8 MP front 16 MP rear 8 MP front Dual 16 MP rear 8 MP front Launch Price $250 $250 £279 ($250) $229 $200 The OnePlus X's hardware remains competitive with phones two years its junior. Modern mid-rangers need to push the envelope further. Current mid-tier phones are definitely better than the OnePlus X. Camera, memory, and even cheaper processing hardware has improved a fair bit since then, and you’ll find newer and better software on some handsets too. However at the time, the OnePlus X was essentially a mini flagship, more closely aligned to the Xperia Compact series, but at a much more competitive price. We aren’t seeing any $250 phones powered by the likes of a Snapdragon 835 or even 660 in today’s market. Perhaps it’s simply not economically viable anymore. The OnePlus X could be just a one off. Maybe there simply isn’t the need to push high-end processors into cost-effective products anymore. Some close contenders Lately some very good mid-tier handsets hit the market and 2018 is looking very promising. The closest brands that stick to the ideals of the OnePlus X are Huawei’s Honor and Xiaomi. However you’ll struggle to find many, if any, of these handsets available in the U.S.. Even across Europe sales can be patchy. An honourable mention to goes Nokia for its design, but its processing hardware still lags notably behind. Some of these handsets come very close to perfecting the mid-tier formula. The Honor 7X, for example, offers a very modern design, a nice display, and even a dual camera setup. However, you still have to go up to the more expensive Honor 9 or View 10 to get your hands on that flagship-tier processing hardware and truly competitive cameras. The hidden downside of Huawei’s rejection from the U.S. is that these excellent handsets won’t be making their way to carrier stores in the country. Chinese brands like Huawei's Honor and Xiaomi offer the best phones at $250, but are lacking official U.S distribution channels. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 and Pro models offer similarly excellent value for money in India, especially if you’re after a bigger display size. You won’t find the very best processing hardware, and some features like an IP rating are missing, but at between 11,999 to 16,999 rupees ($185 to $262) the Redmi Note 5 series is tough to beat. The Chinese market has a much wider range of handsets offering high-end hardware at these cutthroat price points. However, swathes of customers across Europe and even more in the U.S. can’t get their hands on these brands without some finicky import routes or having to rely on the occasional Amazon GSM-only sale. If popular Western brands can’t rise to the challenge, we need Chinese OEMs to secure some import routes. Closing thoughts Even though it wasn’t universally loved at the time, looking back the OnePlus X accomplished a since unrivalled feat. Offering flagship processing hardware in a stylish package at a price point that barely registers as mid-range. It’s taken more than two years since its launch for equivalent phones to catch up with the phone’s hardware and style, and it’s good that it’s finally happened. However what the market could really use is another ground-breaker which proves just how far the boundaries can be pushed on a budget. Another powerhouse that makes compromises in just the right places to punch well above its price tag. 2018 could well be the year that OEMs perfect the mid-tier formula. The hardware is there to be implemented, so hopefully we’ll see at least one OEM release a cost effective handset as potent as the Oneplus X was back in its day. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like a successor is in the works from the company itself, so we’ll have to look to other manufacturers to pick up the baton. , via Android Authority http://bit.ly/2FMy9hn

Best Samsung phones you can buy right now Samsung is without a doubt the biggest name in the Android world, and so if you are considering purchasing a new phone, logic dictates you may be looking to pick up a phone made by the Korean giant. But which phone is right for your individual needs? While it might be easy to just say “get a Note or the latest Galaxy S”, Samsung’s line-up is actually quite robust with a variety of phones covering prices as low as $150 or as high as $1000. Even more confusing, some of Samsung’s mid-range and entry line-ups are so similar in specs and design that picking a phone can be a bit confusing. That’s where we come in. In this list, we break down some of the best high, mid, and even entry-level options from Samsung. Best Android phones Best cheap Android phones Editor’s note: We will be updating this list regularly as new devices launch. Best Samsung phone all around: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 See more Galaxy Note 8 photos After a controversial 2016, Samsung’s Galaxy Note line is back in full force. With top-of-the-line specs, a stunning design, an all-new dual-camera setup, and new software features, the Galaxy Note 8 is the best Android phone you can buy right now. The Note 8’s near-bezel-less 6.3-inch Quad HD+ Infinity Display with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio is one of our favorite parts about this phone. DisplayMate agrees with us too. It’s big, maybe too big for some people, but at least the company puts that screen to good use. There’s a new App Pairing feature that allows you to open up two favorited apps in multi-window at the same time, and there are a few new S Pen features that will satisfy the stylus users out there. What’s more, the new dual-camera setup on the back performs incredibly well. While picture quality isn’t a huge step up from what we saw on the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, the extra 12 MP sensor with OIS allows you to take clear, concise photos and impressive bokeh shots in just about any situation. No, it’s not perfect, but no phone is. Samsung’s fingerprint sensor placement is still super annoying, and this phone is expensive. If those things don’t matter to you though, the Note 8 might be the right phone for you. Check out our full review below! Now that a new flagship is out on the market, that means plenty of deals are starting to pop up. Right now you can get the S8 starting around $725, with the S8 Plus priced around $825. Get Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus from Samsung Samsung Galaxy S8 Active While the Galaxy S series is already waterproof and dust resistant these days, if you want even more protection — that’s where the Active series comes in. The Galaxy S8 Active is the latest member of this family, and you can get it unlocked for $850 Get Galaxy S8 Active at Samsung Best mid-range Samsung phone: Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017) and A5 (2017) The Galaxy A family seems to be Samsung’s flagship mid-range line, getting way more marketing attention than the C series — at least in the United States. Although the Galaxy A7 and A5 are an obvious step downward from the Galaxy S7 or S8 lines, they could be perfect for you if you are looking for a solid Android experience for below $400. Essentially the Galaxy A7 and A5 are the same phone, with the former packing a 5.7-inch display while the latter sticks to a more modest 5.2-inch display. Both are packing 1080p super AMOLED panels. Under the hood you’ll find the A7 and A5 are powered by the Samsung Exynos 7 Octa 7880 with 3GB RAM. Other key specs include 32GB storage with microSD, 16MP front/rear cameras, and a 3600 mAh or 3000 mAh battery respectively. There is at least one big downside though, and that’s the software is still based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. That’s slightly disappointing, considering these phones were released in January of 2017. Of course a Nougat update shouldn’t be too terribly far off. Overall, the Galaxy A series is a great substitute to the S line if you are looking to save some hard earned cash. Specs 5.2-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 424ppi (Galaxy A5) 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 386ppi (Galaxy A7) Samsung Exynos 7 Octa 7880 3 GB of RAM 32 GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion 16 MP rear and front cameras Non-removable 3,000 mAh battery for A5, 3,600 mAh for A7 Android 6.0 Marshmallow 146.1 x 71.4 x 7.9 mm, 155 g (Galaxy A5) 156.8 x 77.6 x 7.9 mm, 186 g (Galaxy A7) Read more Samsung Galaxy A5 hands-on Samsung Galaxy A7 vs A5: spec comparison Buy the Galaxy A5 for $350 BUY THE GALAXY A7 FOR $350 Honorable mentions: Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge The Galaxy S6 is now two years old, but still remains a solid option for those that gotta have a flagship. Just keep in mind that major software updates are starting to come to a close so if that’s important to you, getting a newer mid-range might actually be the better deal here for most buyers. That said, if you buy the Galaxy S6 used or refurbished — you can get it for way below the $300/$400 mark. Get Galaxy S6 for $350 / Get Galaxy S6 edge for $425 Samsung Galaxy C7 / C7 Pro / C5 Pro Frankly, the Galaxy C7 family is in many ways better than the A series, offering more RAM and built in storage. That said, the Galaxy A series seems to be more widely available in many markets (including the US). One note, the Pro variant of the C7 isn’t that much different than the slightly older C7 and is about $60 cheaper. Get Galaxy C7 for $292 / Get Galaxy C7 Pro for $350 / Get Galaxy C5 Pro for $350 Best cheap Samsung phone: Samsung Galaxy J7 / J7 Prime / J7 V When it comes to affordable Samsung phones, the J7 family is pretty easy to recommend. Each of these models have slightly different designs and specs, though they certainly aren’t worlds apart. The J7 and J7 Prime are both powered by an Exynos 7870 processor, while the J7 V trades in the Exynos chip for a Snapdragon 625. You get 3GB RAM with the Prime model, and 2GB for the other two. It’s also worth noting the Prime and standard J7 have better 13MP shooters, instead of an 8MP main camera. Turning to the display, while all three have 5.5-inch sizes, the technology and resolutions differ. The Prime has an LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920, meanwhile the J7 and J7 V offer 720 x 1280 resolutions, with Super AMOLED and TFT technologies respectively. The majority of the other specs remain the same across the board, including 16GB storage with microSD and 3,300 mAh batteries. That said, the Prime’s battery is the only one that isn’t removable. Pricing for the J7 is set at $200 (or $160 via Boost Mobile), with the Verizon only J7 V set at $240. If you are interested in the Prime’s higher resolution and higher RAM count, you’ll pay around $50 more than the standard Galaxy J7. Editor’s note: The Galaxy J7 Prime known as the Galaxy On NXT in India and other select markets. This variant offers the same looks and core specs, but with double the internal storage for roughly the same price. Specs 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 resolution (Galaxy J7) 5.5-inch LCD display with 1080 x 1920 resolution (Galaxy J7 Prime) 5.5-inch TFT display with 720 x 1280 resolution (Galaxy J7 V) Samsung Exynos 7870 or Snapdragon 625, depending on market 2 GB of RAM for J7 and J7 V, 3GB for Prime 16 GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion up to 256 GB 13MP main camera for J7 and J7 Prime, 8MP main cam for J7 V 5MP selfie cam for J7 and J7 V, 8MP selfie cam for J7 Prime 3,300 mAh battery Android 7.0 Nougat for J7 V, Android 6.0 Marshmallow for J7 and J7 Prime Read more Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime debuts Samsung Galaxy J7 V arrives on Verizon BUY THE J7 Prime FOR $245 BUY THE GALAXY J7 FOR $200 BUY THE GALAXY J7 V FOR $240 Honorable mentions: Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) If you are looking for a smaller handset, the Galaxy A3 could be perfect, thanks to its compact 4.7-inch display. The rest of the specs are on par with the J7 family as well, though it does offer a smaller 2350 mAh battery. Keep in mind that this phone isn’t officially available in the US, though you can find the international version pretty easily at places like Amazon — just make sure the bands support your particular carrier. Get Galaxy A3 (2017) for $260 Samsung Galaxy C5 While the C7 and C7 Pro are essentially the same phone with just minor changes, the gap between the C5 and the C5 Pro is actually a bit larger. That said, it’s still a good phone if you’re on a tight budget. Core specs include a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display (1080p), a Snapdragon 617, 4GB RAM, and 32 or 64GB storage. On the camera front you get a 16MP main cam and 8MP front shooter. The phone offers a non-removable 2,600 mAh battery and runs on Android 6.0-based software. Get Galaxy C5 for $250 Best entry-level Samsung phone: Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) and its variants While the Galaxy J7 and the honorable mentions listed above are the best ‘cheap’ Samsung phones, what if you are looking for the bare minimum? You simply want a phone that can do the basics relatively well. Whether you are looking for a secondary phone, a phone for a student, or just have a really thin budget — Samsung still has an option for you. Okay, so the Galaxy J3 isn’t going to blow your socks off. Don’t let that fool you, it’s still a pretty great handset, especially considering it costs around $150. Unfortunately, Samsung’s budget-friendly headsets can be a massively confusing, especially since it seems that Samsung and its carrier partners have renamed the same phone like a hundred times. Even worse AT&T GoPhone has the Samsung Galaxy Express Prime 2 for $130, while AT&T (postpaid) has the J3 (2017) for $180 — and yet they are, as far as we can tell from specs and design, the EXACT same device. The confusion continues as the AT&T J3 (2017) and Prime 2 are powered by an Exynos 7570, while the J3 V, J3 Emerge, and other 2017 J3 variants are typically powered by either a Snapdragon 410 or 425. Aside from the processor, all the models are roughly the same, and all have just 1.5GB RAM. If you are planning on getting this phone, don’t pay more than $150 for it. Sprint’s Emerge, for example, is $235 — which means it’s only like a few dollars cheaper than the more powerful Samsung Galaxy J7 V. The low amount of RAM is easily the biggest weakness for this phone, though for users with modest needs, it should still get the job done well enough. Other specs include a 5-inch 1280 x 720 display, 16GB storage with microSD for expansion, a 5MP rear cam, 2MP front cam, a 2,600 mAh battery, and Android 7.0 Nougat powered software for the AT&T variant. It is worth noting, that if you are picking up another variant other than the AT&T version, there’s a good chance your phone might still have Marshmallow-based software. Again, while the hardware specs are nowhere near those of the Galaxy S8 series, Galaxy A family, or even the J7, the price tag might be right for someone looking for an entry-level handset that comes from one of the world’s most popular handset makers. Specs 5-inch 720 x 1280, 294ppi (TFT for most variants) Exynos 7570 (AT&T version) Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 8917 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 8916 (most other variants) 1.5 GB of RAM 16 GB of on-board storage, microSD expansion 5 MP rear camera, 2 MP front camera Removable 2,600 mAh battery Android 6.0 Marshmallow or 7.0 Nougat Roughly 139.7 x 69.9 x 8.9, dimensions and weight may vary slightly based on model Read more Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) goes on sale at AT&T for $180 Galaxy J3 Emerge arrives on Sprint Get Express Prime 2 from GoPhone Get unlocked J3 (2017) for $130 And that’s all folks. Agree with our picks? Any major Samsung handset we didn’t mention that you feel should have made the list?
