Pls Tell Me More about How Politically Scary Ella's Marriage to Robert Tyrell actually is.

Robert being related to everyone started out as a fucking bit, & now Robella is literally one of the most terrifying matches in the fucking fic.

I talked about the premise of the branch of House Tyrell that Robert is from here. The tl;dr is that the Lord Tyrell during the beginning Jaehaerys's reign had a bunch of bastard sons, & I made one be legitimized as a backup heir. That son, Ser Luthor the Knight of Thorns, is the late uncle to the current Lord Tyrell who, at the moment, only has daughters. So, with all that in mind: we are immediately starting with "Ser Garth Tyrell, the current Knight of Thorns & Lord of Thorn Hall, is the direct cousin of Lord Mathos Tyrell & the son of the guy who almost inherited High Garden. He is affable & well liked, & if he was more ambitious he could push to inherit over his cousin's daughters." Lord Mathos is, overall, jazzed that his cousin has net zero ambition & genuinely likes not being in charge of the entirety of The Reach; the threat is still there though. This isn't aided by the fact that Garth's wife, Lady Danielle Reyne, would absolutely love for her husband to push for High Garden. She's kind of ambitious for the sake of ambition, but that's just sort of how House Reyne is in SOTF. (Also, I feel like naming your son "Garth," or really any "g" name in The Reach is the equivalent of a Targaryen naming their son "Aegon." That kid is named the equivalent of "King McHeir" at that point)

Through just the Thorn Hall Tyrells Robert has connections to:

House Oldflowers by way of Ser Luthor's widow/Robert's grandmother, who are the last (& most direct) verifiable descendants of House Gardener/the guys who had High Garden before the Tyrells.

House Oakheart by way of one of Garth's sisters (Cathryne) being Dear Bosom Companions with Lord Oakheart's sister. House Oakheart is one of the oldest & most powerful noble families within The Reach, trace their lineage all the way back to Garth Greenhand old & powerful.

House Hunt by way of one of Garth's brothers (Ser Gregor) being married to one of them. The Hunts are just Tarly bannermen, but that's still something & could potentially bring in the Tarlys themselves if push came to shove (depending on how close Aunt Caryss is to any family members who married into House Tarly)

Oldtown & The Citadel by way of another of Garth's brothers (Garlan) having become a maester

House Strong by way of Garth's other sister having been Lyonel Strong's second wife, & the mother of Larys. RIP Delylah Tyrell, we will never know if having had you in his life would have made Larys normal to be around

House Pommingham by way of Garth's oldest son/Robert's older brother's wife. The Pommingham's are kind of a nothingburger House, but that's still a noble family Robert has ties to.

Then you factor in Robert's mom's side of the family bringing in connections & it gets more ridiculous:

House Reyne, Robert's mother's birth House who is already pretty powerful & influential within The Westerlands

House Stark, by way of Queen Alysanne's friend Alarra. Robert's maternal grandmother was Lord Alaric Stark's daughter/Cregan Stark's Great Aunt

House Serrett by way of Danielle's younger brother (Lord Samson) being married to Lord Serrett's niece. Like the Pommingham's kind of a nothingburger House within canon, but that is, y'know, still a family Robert has some kind of connection to.

House Strong again, because Robert's cousin & the heir to Castamere, is married to Lyonel's oldest kid/Harwin's older sister

Danielle's Aunt Elisha/one of Robert's Great Aunts, is the mother of Lord Humfrey Bracken (the dad of the guy who got murdered in Boremund's living room). Y'know, the Brackens? The guys who keep fighting with the Blackwoods about who's more important?Those guys.

Danielle's Aunt Ceira/Robert's other Great Aunt is the mom of Jason & Tyland Lannister. I don't think I have to explain how being related to the Lord of Casterly Rock is a big deal.

So Robert is related to fucking everyone, including 2 guys on the small council. This shit gets fucking worse when you factor in Ella.

Ella is a Royce. The Royces just are one of the oldest & most influential families in The Vale. They control the vast majority of The Vale's coastline, & her brother is not only married to a Baratheon, but the Baratheons love him.

One of Ella's cousins is Jeyne Arryn, her grandpa was her regent until he got Medieval Prostate Cancer & retired back home. Jeyne loves her Royce family, she's got good memories with them & they've always defended her

Ella's Great Aunt is the Head of House Mormont, which isn't that impressive, but that's still an old family who is regularly fending off the Iron Islanders. This Great Aunt also has a Manderly for a husband--a Manderly who encouraged his nephew (the current Lord of White Harbor) to foster Ella's baby brother.

Regardless of the fallout with Laena, Yorick is still friends with Laenor & Rhea was friends with Rhaenys. That pulls the Velaryons in at least a little bit.

Ella's Aunt Rina is married to the Lord of House Costayne. That's one of the Hightower bannermen, & within the canon of SOTF, Aunt Rina's husband is the cousin of Hobert & Otto Hightower. Like, those guys' mom just is sotf!Owen Costayne's aunt.

Ella has friends strewn across the Free Cities thanks to her hot girl gap year

The Strongs are once again being brought back out because Lyonel & his third wife were friends with Lady Rhea, & their daughter is married to one of Ella's cousins

There is, of course, the elephant in the room of her being related to House Targaryen. Ella's uncle is the king, she is maintaining a friendship with at least one of his kids at all times, & she's friends with his second wife.

Not only does Ella have a sentient WMD she takes on joy rides, so do her 2 brothers. And these are some of the largest & oldest of the dragons that are currently alive.

If Robert Tyrell had loftier ambitions than just being a professional trophy husband, boytoy, malewife he would be the most politically terrifying man in Westeros. He has connections to most of the Great Houses, several of the oldest & most powerful Houses within Westeros, most of the eastern coastline of Westeros & part of the western coastline, Essosi nobles & politicians, the royal family, 3 guys on the small council, & an insane wife who rides Jumbo Peepaw Vermithor

What's in a Name: A Court of Gold and Shadows

A Court of Gold and Shadows: 

Lots of names here! 

Oriana Fireborn Belmond

“Dawn, gold” 

Oriana is the “Gold” in A Court of Gold and Shadows, so she needed a name to match. There is a definite theme of Fire/Precious Metals going in my naming of my Tartera Faeries. 

In medieval legend Oriana was the daughter of a king of England who married the knight Amadis…her grandmother is the next thing to a Queen the Tartera have, with her mother and sister next in line, which makes Oriana something like a Princess. 

Fireborn is a honorific and was given to her because Oriana was literally born in the rings of fire that surround the Eternal Flame. 

Belmond literally means "beautiful mountain”, and she is a Tartera Faerie, who was born in the mountains surrounding the night court. 

Cyra, Custodian of the Mountain

“Throne”

She is the nearest thing Tartera’s have to a Queen, to I wanted a “regal” name. This fit the bill beautifully. 

Adara, First Daughter

“Noble”

Adara is the Heiress to Cyra and as such was also given a name that shows her position in the mountains. 

Titania, First Daughter of the First Daughter

“Titanium”

The first of Ariana’s siblings that follow the Fire/Precious Metals naming theme in that family. Titanium is incredibly resistant to specific pressures like bending or cracking. Unlike certain other materials, it is extremely tough to snap a titanium band. Titania is a very harsh character in a lot of ways, with a hard shell, though a surprisingly soft core. She may not always be the nicest to her sibling, though whoever treats them badly, will rue that day, because Titania will come down on them like a ton of bricks. 

Kiran

“Beam of light” 

For me, he is definelty the lightest of Oriana’s siblings and spends most of his days in the forge, always there with a quip on his lips. 

Samson

“Sun, shield”

A member of the rare Guard the Tartera has, Samson is the only one in Oriana’s family that was trained to fight. Even like that, Tartera do not go to war, his position a purely defensive one. A shield to keep the mountain safe. 

Enya, Second Daughter of the First Daughter

“Little Fire”

 Of all her siblings, probably closest to Oriana in pure magical potential, which is why she got a name meaning “little” fire. A very knowledgeable healer, that will never be interested in romantic relationships. 

Cyrus

“Sun”

Oriana’s only full sibling, he is the sun to her dawn. Also the only one of her siblings that absolutely has no Tartera abilities whatsoever. 

Toron

“a family once having lived near a thorn bush or hedge”

Toron lost his leg in a mining accident that also claimed the life of Oriana’s and Cyrus’ father. Because of that I wanted a name that signified the hardship he went through. 

Althea

“Healing”

The only daughter of Titania and Toron was born after decades of fertility issues. 

In Greek mythology Alther was the mother of Meleager. Soon after her son was born she was told that he would die as soon as a piece of wood that was burning on her fire was fully consumed. She immediately extinguished the piece of wood and sealed it in a chest, but in a fit of rage many years later she took it out and set it alight, thereby killing her son. (This is definitely not what I am planning with her character, but I love the fact that her myth had something to do with fire) 

Briony

“climbing plant”

Hailing from the Autumn Court, Cyrus’ wife has a botanical name and dark auburn hair. (It can also be seen because she “climbed” the societal ladder, marrying something akin to Tartera Royalty, and has never cared one bit about it.) 

Sienna

“orange-red”

Named for her paternal family’s penchant for roaring flames and her red hair. 

Finley

“Courageous one”

The middle kid of Cyrus and Briony, with the ability to always get into trouble. 

Rory

“red”

Just like his older sister, also named for red hair and autumn heritage. 

Wynstan

“Joyful stone”

Oriana’s late husband got a name that totally doesn’t fit him because I was in a sarcastic mood. A stony, and very much not joyful marriage was the result of the political match between Oriana and Wynstan. 

Titus

“Title of honor”

And for Wynstan’s dishonourable brother we got a name that means the exact opposite!.

Christian Symbolism in the Succession war

We've all seen Chrollo's cross, but there are some other references to biblical stories in the succession war that I think bear mentioning. We're going to start with the most obvious and work our way down to ones I think are a stretch.

Crown of Thorns

Morena's design features a halo or crown of thorns wrapped around her head, similar to classic depictions of the martyrdom of Jesus. The crown of thorns is the ultimate symbol of self sacrifice, the incarnation of the suffering of Jesus on the cross.

Morena's suffering, and perception of the world because of her suffering, makes her view herself as a twisted savior, here to save humanity from itself by purging all of it. In this way, she views herself as a martyr along side Jesus.

If the parallel holds true, I would expect Morena to die after being betrayed by one of her "disciples"

Samson and the Lion

Our first introduction to Prince Benjamin is as he strangles a lion while talking with his brother. This is possible a reference to the biblical story where Samson, looking for a wife, happens upon a lion and, using the power of god (and anime) beats the fuck out of so he can marry a Philistine lady. Later, she begs to know the secret of his power, and after revealing his power come from his uncut hair, she cuts it off in his sleep and turns him over to the Philistines.

Samson is the biblical ideal of strength. His faith is not perfect, his morals are iffy, and he's not the sharpest tool, but he is physically and spiritually powerful. This is emblematic of Benjamin's strong Nen and physical power.

If the parallel holds true, Benjamin will be betrayed by a woman and left to his enemies.

Virgin Mary and Jesus

The virgin Mary and Jesus are symbols of innocence, hope and the future. Woble might be a good allegory for baby jesus, as he is saddled with the sins of others, and while Oito is (probably) not a virgin, she is young, innocent, unwilling to watch people die quietly and fiercely protective of her child.

If the parallel holds true, Woble will become a symbol of hope and purity and, ultimately, not outlive his mother.

Prince of Thorns & Nightmares - Review

I knew from the moment I read the summary of this book that I was going to love it, but I wasn't expecting to re-discover myself in these 426 pages. Sleeping Beauty was my first Disney movie-my most watched Disney movie as a child-and even though it has been probably 25 years since I last saw it, I still have vivid images of it in my mind, but, at the same time, a lot of details are blurred, and this book filled those holes perfectly.

The review is hidden below due to spoilers.

Let's talk about characters!

Philip is not a prince charming by any chance. Part of the reason why this book does not have a perfect 10 is because Philip was kind of a selfish bastard that frustrated me at times with his self-loathing and uselessness. However(!), by the end, I understood perfectly the reason for his behavior and mentality. It was a much needed growth arc that lead him from being a do-nothing gallivanting Prince to the Hero of our story.

Aurora/Briar Rose is a perfect princess who can't do anything wrong and I will defend her with my life. She is sassy, she is smart, she is a dreamer. She is everything I love and care about, and I'm so, so happy that this book changed her for me. Aurora has always been my favorite Disney Princess, but growing up I was always ashamed of it because she basically doesn't do much, right? She lies there, sleeping, until she's awaken by a kiss. What does that say about me? But this book made her a fighter, someone who didn't rest until she got the answers to her questions, who never gave up, even when things got hard. *chef's kiss*

I don't remember if Eris, Poena and Phrike are in the original story or not, but I thought they were a great addition to the book. I loved the betrayal, the way they tricked Philip into believe he had magic so he could steal the sword and shield for them. I loved the hint at a redemption arc for Eris that ended up not happening in the end. I thought it was the perfect way for the author to take the rug from underneath our feet while letting us remain in a safety bubble only to burst that bubble at the end. Again, *chef's kiss*

Short mention to King Hubert. I hate him and everything he represent parent-wise, and no matter that he apologized and saw his errors in the end, I still hate what he did to Philip.

The plot and writing of this book were simply perfect. I was hooked from the get go and couldn't stop thinking about the book when I was forced to take breaks. I literally stayed up to late to finish reading because I was so excited about it.

Seeing this side of Aurora and Philip's story was a nice complement to the original tale (when I mention 'original tale', I'm talking about the 1959 Disney movie, not Charles Perrault's story). Being witness to the flourishing of their love-with the enemies to friends to lovers arc that I love so much-in the dream world was exactly what I needed to fill the gaps in my memory of this story, but also a reminder of how this was one of my first ships. Reading their meeting in the dream world and consequent re-meet in the real world made me kick my feetsies in the air and gave me butterflies. :')

The end of the book was perfect, too. It gave us a little glimpse at what happens after "they lived happily ever after", while also keeping the narrative open to a possible sequel (which I would read in a heartbeat).

Honorable mentions:

Johanna referring to Samson as Your High Horseness made me cackle.

"You have to practice to get good at things. [...] That's why I write all the time and we spar so often. The more we fail, the better we get." Boy, do I relate to this. A much needed slap of reality to teach me a lesson.

"You're scared to love anyone and disappoint them like you do your father that you don't even love yourself, no matter how self-centered you pretend to be." I need an Aurora in my life to yell some truths in my face like this, please.

"The dreams are the only interesting to ever happen to me. [...] These dreams are all I have." This part absolutely broke my heart. Firstly because Philip finally realizes Briar Rose has been lying about roaming the kingdom and having the freedom to do what she wants with her life, then because we, readers, realize Briar Rose only made up these lies because she was jealous of Philip's freedom, and lastly because I, again, relate so much to her. When I was 16 all I had were books and dreams.

Yes! I've finally finished my new fan book cover of my Disney Chills Rescue fan series! It took a whole week to get it done but it was worth it!

Anyway, here's what happens in my new DCR story.

Motsuki keeps having the same nightmare about Dawn and Maleficent. At first, she thinks it's a coincidence, but after having a different nightmare where she meets Dawn (who is outside her mirror prison and warning Motsuki not to trust anyone in Castletown), Motsuki is sent on a Disney Chills Rescue mission to Castletown to save Dawn from her ageless sleep in order to get a goodnight's sleep again. Along the way, Motsuki will meet a sheepdog named Samson and the refugees (Phillipa, Leah, Kaylee, Stephanie, Fred, Winnie, Mr. Blankenship, Dawn's parents, Danielle, Ronnie, and Dawn's aunts Fleur and Fauna) who are hiding in Spindles N Things from Maleficent's evil rose thorn vines until they decide help her find Dawn's hidden prison and save her.

(Although, Leah refuses to help, much to her best friends' shock and anger that got them into a feud with her and break up their friendship while everyone else turns their backs on Leah for that invitation prank she played on Dawn, which they now believe what got them and the whole town into the mess. Even though Leah tried to protest that it was Dawn's fault for being stupid by making a deal with Maleficent just to get revenge on her for not inviting her to her birthday party, Kaylee and Stephanie angrily remind Leah that she made them go along with the prank then give the so-called Castletown princess some harsh and hypocritical "The Reason You Suck" speeches and telling her that the only person in Castletown who is stupid is her. This left Leah in shock as she watches her two best friends leave Spindles N Things with Motsuki and her rescue team, then stomps her foot in frustration before she sits on a nearby chair and sobs in guilt.)

But as Motsuki goes further into a rose maze with her rescue team to find a huge castle with ravens and thunderstorm clouds hovering above it, she soon learns the hard way why can't trust anyone when Philippa is acting a bit strange... and why Samson keeps growling at her.

The men you sent to the Emerald Graves, the Forbidden Oasis—all of them have failed. She’s not especially strong, nor is she well trained in arms. There’s no reason why she should remain such a threat to our work. All she has is spite, and a weak-willed former member of the Order working as her dog. The time for playing games is over. I don’t care if she’s 26 years old. I don’t care if she’s the leader of the damned Inquisition. She’s an insolent brat and a thorn in our side. Headcanons about my Rook, Julian Thorne!

He grew up in Kirkwall — in darktown specifically. Joined up with the Coterie after his mother died when he was 13, following in his older brother Cecil's footsteps.

He didn't become a Warden by choice. A mission went bad, and he got stuck in a cave system for a few days after causing a cave-in to cover the rest of the group. Too many close calls with darkspawn on his way out, got the blight.

Was a contact of Varric's when he was still in the Coterie, and Varric was the one who pulled the strings to get him to some wardens in the area. Feels like he owes him for that.

Was very sickly as a kid, had to tough his way through it for the most part (was only taken to a healer when a fever was literally killing him) — as a result of this, he didn't really register he had the Blight until he was back at home and woke up unable to move. Held on for like a week while his brother was shoving various herbal concoctions down his throat.

Worked as a stablehand when he wasn't doing Coterie jobs. Likes horses.

Trans man! Still deals with dysphoria sometimes.

Fiercely independent and has always had authority issues. The Coterie kept him around because he was one of their few pet mages left after the Kirkwall Rebellion. The Wardens... chafed with him a lot.

In my world state, the inquisition didn't banish the Wardens from the south, but the southern Wardens did have a huge deficit of mages after the seige of Adamant. So, he was sent down to train at the now rebuilt Adamant in the Western Approach.

He is barely a mage, though. Everything he knows now is a mix between "I made it the fuck up" (his main affinity for pyromancy, mostly) and more experienced mages going "why are you doing all that. You don't need to do all that." (simple things like barriers and fade-stepping). Other than that, he was mostly trained as a rogue. That's what you get for being a Kirkwall apostate.

Needless to say, his first time he was transferred northward and some other mage wardens taught him about fighting with orbs and daggers, he was very relieved.

Prefers tea to coffee.

Oh — his big secret is that his father is actually Raleigh Samson. When I was bouncing around ideas for Rooks, he started as a joke. Then his backstory got really real, and I got. Very attached to him.

He's never met the Champion of Kirkwall directly. Why would he? He met Anders a few times, but he doesn't remember this at all (again, fevers so intense he was literally dying).

His father was never told he was a mage. For obvious reasons. His parents separated when he was pretty young, so he saw his father rarely.

Was parentified as a child, so now he has that killer personality combo called "I compulsively have to play caretaker for my friends, but I also have an avoidant attachment style so I push them away whenever they try to do the same for me." (This is the only way I could really make the "why does Rook solve everyone else's problems but they never solve his?" thing work).

Judges 15: 13-15. "Lehi."

Lehi, the jawbone of the donkey, the supposed author of the Book of Mormon, is synonymous with the intelligence brain center of the Mashiach.

One could write an entire book on this topic but let's treat it as a Mishnah and perform a Gemara on it istead, meaning how we can beef up the verse with references and then we will tear it down and turn it into an office, a new responsibility.

The Judites are paying tribute to a bunch of Philistines and this is stupid. It is forbidden. To bind up the light and not attempt to "kill it" meaning, present a sound argument for their behavior is completely irrational. Good and evil are easily defined and understood.
