nothing will ever describe my life and how I view it as much as Will Stetson’s cover of Unknown Mother Goose
#“If my life is thrown away forgotten by the side then could I here at the end sing of this love inside?”#“One more time would it be fine if I could try to find? One last sign of life stuck in the voice that I had left behind?”#“Through the pain if they still could love it all the same Through the pain if they wished to find love anyway”#“Hey if you’re gonna share all your love Well then tell me my friend who will you meet at the end?”#“Stuck in a box locked I’ll free your heart with a knock Come you’re free a fellow failure like me”#“I had knew it deep down inside That you had always stood to fight Protecting this place we hide there by my side”#“I’ve grown to take it the pain welling in me the breaking and hurting“#“Joy grief rage and pleasure they all blend together through every endeavor”#“If happiness that I cherish is real and is out there somewhere lost on this earth“#“Will I wander forever and ever in agony in this darkened and cold world”#“As the blackened the sheep that will never belong anywhere as I live forever? --Don’t leave me like that!”#“How could I grow to adore this world surrounding me? Tell me will I just keep on rolling on eternally?”#“Hey I think I’ll take these feelings no one ever wants”#“Give this world a chance and share them all now with this final song”#“Look at me what exactly do you want to be? Look at me can you tell me what you long to see?”#“My heart breaks apart however it still burns On now more than any other Look at me can you see the one I try to be?”#“Is there light out piercing through the night Guiding me on to my life?”#these lyrics man… it hurts. - 🎡#(🎡) marz/nep

Honestly that first part also sums up the problem with the exile side of things as well. WQ and AR dying? Sad, but still poignant when it happened, both due to the death itself and the actions before hand (see: AR not wanting to blow WV up). And then you turn to WV and PM in act 6 and start asking "where's the rest of it"? Even the act 6 agents like dignitary got the same nothing treatment.
Yeah! WQ and AR died at the right time and place (even though it makes me soo sosad 😭) and honestly with how little character and planning there was for the exiles it probably should have extended to the others, but it didnt because hussie Needs that fandom aproval.

I dyed some of that lovely merino with multicoloured Donegal nep for the upcoming winter season. It’s so pretty and looks just like the snowy branches of evergreen trees. Every year I vary the green mix and pattern of dye application so it’s never exactly the same twice.

What are your head cannons for characters in different factions within Zenless being friends? (Example: Lucy and Corin being friends because they have the shared experience of not great parents based on what the game reveals).
Ooooooh I hadn’t thought about this til now—
I’m gonna try and include as many characters as possible in this!!
So first off, everyone in the Cunning Hares gets along with everyone in The Sons of Calydon. Considering Billy used to be a former member of the gang, I’d say the two work pretty closely/know each other fairly well. For specifics, I think Anby and Caesar have the same mindset when it comes to combat, and Nekomata and Burnice bond over being chaos gremlins. Nekomata would also love Piper, nap taking gang go Brrrr. I think the only ones who wouldn’t like each other would be Nicole and Lucy, and they tend to just hate each other in secret/behind everyone else’s back’s cause they care about their own groups too much.
Similarly, I think Belobog also has similar ties to Victoria Housekeeping. Lycaon and Corin both like Ben, but for different reasons. Lycaon likes Ben due to thiren solidarity, and Lycaon also thinks he’s a pretty decent guy who’s chill and all that. If Belobog ever needs a commission from Victoria, or vice versa, the transactions are made between those two.
Corin likes him cause of how gentle and understanding he is. She sees a lot of her new father figure Lycaon in him.
As much as it pains me to say it, I don’t really think anyone in Victoria Housekeeping would like the company of the more criminally aligned factions (so far being the Cunning Hares and Sons of Calydon). Sure, Victoria Housekeeping may not have the greatest moral compass, but they do have a reputation to uphold.
The only one I think does make sense is Corin and Nekomata considering their actions in canon. Maaaaaybeee if you squint, I can see Anby and Ellen getting along, too
Seth being the himbo that he is would definitely befriend Rina on accident. Like, she would just be doing the mind manipulation stuff and being super condescending and shit, and he’d be none the wiser and think her insults to be genuine compliments.
And obviously because of that, I think Rina and Jane would also be besties. Gaslight gatekeep girlboss solidarity.
Lycaon and Qingyi I think would also get along at least somewhat well, considering both are very peepaw coded characters. Lycaon also deems it good to have at least one cop friend for emergencies.
Soldier 11 often works with NEPS, but hasn’t been able to form a close bond with anyone outside of Phaethon due to how insanely busy she always is. She’d definitely like Qingyi the most if given the time to actually hang out with the NEPS faction.
Seth, if ever given the chance, would also probably like Anton’s company. The two have similar moral compasses and even more similar himbo mindsets.
Anton would also love Billy for the same reasons. He has to keep their friendship somewhat hidden though, lest Grace finds out Billy exists and tries to cut him open to see how he works.
Piper seems to be the mechanic of the Sons of Calydon group, so I think she’d get along with at least Koleda and Anton from Belobog. Solidarity in working with big machinery and all that y’know?
Soukaku would definitely be friends with Burnice, no explanation needed. Chaos gremlin x chaos gremlin.
Harumasa and Seth probably have a history together the same way Zhu Yuan and Miyabi do.
Until they reveal more about her, I don’t really know what to say about Yanagi, but I think she’d probably get along with people like Lycaon and Qingyi
I ran into Lighter once in Lumina square and he had dialogue about being kinda shy so y’know what, fuck it, anxious mf solidarity between him and Corin. Let the tall scary looking biker guy have social anxiety and let it be the most normal thing ever please Hoyo I beg do not make him like fucking Mika from genshin
I really hope they officially reveal the idol/livestreamer faction, as well as the vampire guy in Lycaon’s story quest soon, cause I’d love to see how their personalities are, and how they’d fit in with the rest of the cast

Sorry to pile on to your asks, but does nep have a lotta legs? You usually draw her with two arms and two legs, but you draw the other insects/arachnids with the right amount of legs. I think your centipede goldrule has more buggy legs attached to their tail (might be misremembering, sorry ;-;) and Karkat is also bipedal. She’s super cute (and fuzzy <3 ), I was just wondering if she had a leggy secret or if the humanoidyness took over the design at this point. (Love your art! <3 <3 <3)
I love getting asks like this your memory is super good!! thank you!! This does have an explanation ;) IRL, Caterpillars have 3 real legs and then sets of false limbs. The squishy 'limbs' on their butt isn't real legs and can't be manipulated in the same way, which is why when they become moths, their three 'real' legs are all that remain! On the other hand, limebloods have a second set of true legs that are exposed after hitting their second molt to support the weight of their heavy tails. I think the centipede morphs (and soon to be introduced millipedes) have had extra thorax legs for their entire lives. Millipedes and Centipedes are APPARENTLY isopod relatives!?!? ....which made me do i did a shitton of research into insect family trees to figure out who was related to what and made like, two to three handwritten maps and charts. I'll be posting those soon. in the meantime GREENBLOOD COMP

“And you’re the one who taught me to be brave I’ve never spent a moment loving anyone but you And maybe that’s just something that people say But I hope that you know it’s the truth
Because I went downhill at such steep incline That my rearview mirror showed me only the sky And I laughed about it all night”
🥀
“And I said ‘Hey man, isn’t it poetic That the sky is what we leave behind?’ Because I was born into the world on a silken cloud And I got bored of the world before I hit the ground”

while we're talking about mayakovsky and disco elysium, i think the suicidal themes are very important, too.
mayakovsky died by suicide in 1930 (shot himself). his poetry is rife with suicidal imagery. it is essential to his poetic persona.
mayakovsky was also a devoted communist up to his death--"the greatest poet of our soviet epoch" according to stalin (there's a lot i can say about that quote itself and what it means for mayakovsky's complicated legacy, but i won't).
mayakovsky believed in the power of communism--especially through poetry--to fundamentally change the world.
he believed that the ideal communist state would eventually achieve actual resurrection of the dead (no, that's not an exaggeration).
he had SO much hope in the communist project. he believed that a better world could exist. at the same time, he suffered extreme disillusionment in the face of NEP communism and literary censorship by the soviet state and personal despair that he ultimately could not overcome.
these facts about him resonate a lot with characters in disco elysium.
there's kras mazov, who shoots himself after becoming disillusioned with his own revolution.
and, of course, there's harry du bois, who is often only a couple of dialogue options away from talking about suicide or even attempting.
mayakovsky wrote: "more and more often, I think / would it not be better to place / the period of a bullet at the end of my sentence?" (the backbone flute)
and eventually, he would. but he also wrote some of the most hopeful words ever written about art, about love, about human ingenuity. those contradictions lived inside him and made his art revolutionary and so utterly him.
i'm not really sure how to end this beyond saying that despair can overtake even the most hopeful and future minded of us all, but there is beauty and hope alongside darkness. disco elysium embodies that perfectly, imo.

Dmitri Shostakovich at Sergei Prokofiev's funeral, 1953.
Tumblr media
For context, Prokofiev and Stalin died on the same day- March 5, 1953. Because Stalin's funeral was such a major event in the Soviet Union, Prokofiev's was largely overlooked, despite the fact he was one of the leading Soviet composers of his day. Relatively few people attended his funeral, Shostakovich among them.
Shostakovich and Prokofiev were not particularly close, and had a thorny professional relationship- much of the correspondence between them that I've been able to find appears to be formal criticism of each other's works. As Prokofiev was from an older generation- he was born in 1891, while Shostakovich was born in 1906- they did not always see eye-to-eye musically; Shostakovich experimented with the avant-garde when possible, perhaps in part due to his musical maturation during the socially-liberal NEP era, while Prokofiev's style tended to be more conservative and neoclassical- picking up more influence from Imperial-age composers and fellow emigres to the west (he lived in France and the United States before returning to the Soviet Union in 1936). Their generational difference also partially accounted for how they responded to harsh government criticism- Shostakovich was impacted by the consequences of his 1936 denunciation all his life and, while he suffered greatly during his second denunciation in 1948, was able to develop public and private personas, in both the musical and ideological spheres, to preserve himself and his artistry. However devastating as it was for Shostakovich, the 1948 denunciations took a greater toll on many other composers, Prokofiev included. As Prokofiev did not believe he would be harshly denounced as Shostakovich had been in 1936, he was far less prepared for the censorship and attacks he faced in 1948. As a result of the denunciations, combined with his declining health, his artistic productivity decreased, and he largely regulated himself to writing basic ideological works towards the end of his life.
This is a letter Shostakovich wrote to Prokofiev on the subject of his Seventh (and last) Symphony:
Tumblr media
There's speculation as to whether or not Shostakovich was actually impressed by Prokofiev's Seventh Symphony. As Prokofiev was in decline at the time of writing it, the symphony has been criticized for being banal and not being particularly innovative; Rostropovich even claimed that Prokofiev added in its final flourish not for artistic purposes, but to have the piece nominated for a Stalin Prize, which would have meant money and a boost to his reputation after it suffered in 1948. (The Stalin Prize has its own complicated history in its role in Soviet music, and although it was the highest award a Soviet composer could earn, it could sometimes be awarded as a sort of backhanded punishment- an encouragement for composers to write the "right" sort of music, especially after they had been criticized for "formalism." Nonetheless, winning it after suffering a denunciation could mean financial and political security.) Did Shostakovich- who had often traded criticisms with Prokofiev over music- actually like this piece, or was this an effort to encourage a fellow artist to keep composing after suffering mental and physical ailments? This was a private letter and not a public statement, and Shostakovich was typically very straightforward about critiques, so if the entirely positive sentiment for the piece wasn't genuine (the only critique here is that Shostakovich says he wishes the entire symphony was encored!), the letter may have come from a place of concern.
Perhaps the most striking thing about this letter is the line, "I wish you another hundred years to live and create. Listening to such works as your Seventh Symphony makes it much easier and more joyful to live." Maybe by telling Prokofiev that he wished him another hundred years to live and create, Shostakovich was not simply praising the symphony, but encouraging Prokofiev- a composer whom he was often on icy terms with- that he needed to keep living and creating, during a time when it was becoming more and more difficult for him to do so.
