Connecting with Consciousness as a way of becoming “immortal”, same old Cogito, Ergo Sum. It’s easy to label a girl blessed with an unnerving amount of self-awareness, self-consciousness, as “insane”, rather than think on her words and realize she’s speaking in extremely advanced philosophical terms. It delves right into Hegelian territory too. If we want to spice it up I definitely am linking this to La Coscienza di Zeno somehow, which would be interesting

Something something ancient (long since disproved) thing about how the moon cycle affects the psyche but how for a fact it DOES affect sleep cycles. something of the sort, but make it supernatural, and fun. Moon symbolizes madness after all, besides motherliness, and a connection with intuition

Salice: The Devil (XV) or The Strength (XI)?

It’s funny because she made a deal with the devil haha ha ha. But also, it is the one that makes the most sense - although there are other cards who also fit her.

THE DEVIL

This is also the card of temptation: is an order to search for hidden treasures, to seek immortality and powerful energy buried deep in the soul, essentials for great human efforts. So funny this mentioned Faust! That story really goes back, it all circles together. Although it makes sense as Faust was based on a real-life alchemist of the 13th century, and these cards were created from the 14th-century onwards. Very interesting stuff. It aligns with how I wanted to make Mephistopheles a blue devil rather than red, as blue is one of the two colors (along w red) he is often described as.

Especially since her philosophy and the point of her character is about discreet determination, the unwillingness to be noticed explicitly although she’d love for her efforts to be recognized, even if shes basically scared of everyone LOL

Today there are three stories in the news about the mechanics of government that add up to a much larger story about American democracy.

First, by a vote of 216 to 208, the House of Representatives passed a bill to grant statehood to the District of Columbia. The measure would carve out the area around Capitol Hill, the White House, and the National Mall to remain much as they are today, but the rest of what is now the District would get one representative in Congress and two senators. About 712,000 people live in Washington, D.C., only about 37.5% of whom are non-Hispanic white.

Republicans are furiously arguing that this is a naked power play on the part of the Democrats, for D.C.’s inhabitants are presumed to be Democratic voters. In response, those in favor of D.C. statehood point out that the Republican Party, quite famously, admitted six states in twelve months between 1889 and 1890. They were not shy about what they were doing. The admission of North Dakota, South Dakota (they split the Dakota Territory in two), Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming, Republicans said, should guarantee to the Republican Party a permanent majority. (They were so blatant that they convinced a number of Republicans to turn against them.)

But today’s vote to admit D.C. to the Union is not quite the same as the power grab of the 1890s for the simple reason that Washington, D.C., in 2021 has a lot of people in it. Republicans pushed for the admission of their six new states as quickly as they did because they knew that the 1890 census would reveal that the new states did not have enough people in them to become states (unlike Arizona and New Mexico, which did have a lot of people, but those folks supported the Democrats).

In contrast to that push to create states purely for political power, today’s D.C. has people in it. A lot of them. It has more people today than Vermont… and Wyoming, one of the states the Republican brought in in 1890.

The second thing that happened today dealing with the mechanics of government was that on the steps of the Supreme Court building, in a talk to reporters, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), alongside Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), linked the vote for D.C. statehood to control of the Supreme Court. Cruz accused the Democrats of trying to pack the Supreme Court both by trying to add Washington, D.C., as a state—which would add two Senate seats, presumably going to Democrats—and by adding more seats to the court. Then Cruz went on to say something astonishing:

“You didn’t see Republicans when we had control of the Senate try to rig the game. You didn’t see us try to pack the court. There was nothing that would have prevented Republicans from doing what they’re doing other than respect for the rule of law, other than basic decency, other than recognizing that democracy matters, and packing the court and tearing down the institutions that protect our rights is fundamentally wrong.”

This is classic Cruz: straight up gaslighting. Because, of course, Republicans have been stacking the Supreme Court since the Reagan administration, when Attorney General Edwin Meese deliberately politicized the Department of Justice in an attempt, as he said, to “institutionalize the Reagan revolution so it can’t be set aside no matter what happens in future elections.”

Currently, on the court there are 6 justices appointed by Republican presidents and 3 appointed by Democratic presidents. Of the five justices appointed by a Republican president, only one—Clarence Thomas—was appointed by a president who won the popular vote (George H. W. Bush). Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito were both appointed by George W. Bush. Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett were all appointed by Donald Trump. That is, five of the Republicans on the court were appointed by presidents who did not represent the majority of voters, not to mention the majority of Americans.

The story of “rigging” goes beyond this, though. Gorsuch got his seat only because then–Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) declared that President Barack Obama’s appointment of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in March 2016 was too close to the date of a presidential election, the following November, to allow for the nomination to go through. That left the seat free for the president who followed Obama—Donald Trump—to fill, even though McConnell had invented that rule.

Even so, Gorsuch could not get the votes he needed for confirmation until McConnell had invoked the so-called “nuclear option” to get rid of the filibuster so that Gorsuch’s appointment could get through with just 51 votes.

And then, of course, although he had declared that eight months before a presidential election was too late to nominate a Supreme Court justice, McConnell pushed through the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett on October 26, 2020, eight days before the end of a presidential election in which voters had already begun to cast their ballots.

The third thing in the news today is the filibuster. The admission of D.C. as a state, as well as the popular new voting rights bill (which would protect the right to vote, stop gerrymandering, and end the flood of corporate money into our elections), the infrastructure bill, and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (which bans chokeholds, limits military equipment on our streets, and requires body cameras) all come down to whether the Senate will preserve the filibuster, which enables the 50 Republicans in the Senate—who represent 40.5 million fewer Americans than the 50 Democrats in the Senate—to stop the passage of bills unless the majority can nail together 60 yes votes.

It seems to me that these three stories about the mechanics of our government show that our democracy is in a bad place right now. Republicans have stacked the deck in their favor for a long time and have come to rely on that unfair system, rather than policies that appeal to voters, to retain power. Now that Democrats are trying to level the playing field, they howl that the Democrats are cheating.

how do you make poses for the roof? i'm not sure how i can know if the sims will clip into the roof or float

honestly i just...eyeball it...because all roofs are different and you can’t put them into blender so. i just winged it lmao...i just made a pose that looked like it could’ve been lou climbing out the window, only the rig was still ground level, and then i used alt + 9 to lift the teleporter onto the roof as best as i could. that’s why it probably wouldn’t be a very practical pose to release, because i have no way of making it easy to use

seungkwan fakes his own disappearance so he’s free to work, and places suspicion on wonwoo, who he knows Seungcheol has beef with (source). that done, he snatches chan, who he knows seungcheol is close with (and we know this bc they were in the same group together and it’s reasonable to assume that they grouped with people they don’t hate) (source). he texted vernon with ‘don’t trust S’ (source) to sow more confusion and distrust. that done, the theory goes that if in part 5 wonwoo goes missing, seungcheol will be top suspect as he checks off a lot of the points (motivation to knock wonwoo off, chan vanished while alone with him, name starts with an S). (extended cr. Molly in the gc): if Jun and wonwoo had seen him it’s possible they were like “look it’s our missing friend! he looks like he’s in trouble. let’s go help him,” thus allowing him to knock off two at once.

In Palimande, Louisiana, it was a blazing fall Friday. Everyone at St. Jude’s Academy for Boys was ecstatic to get out of the stuffy school and finally strip out of those hot wool uniforms. Gideon Lambeaux sat at his desk in English letting out sighs of frustration, trying to understand the basics of Hamlet’s reason for acting the way he was. As a senior, it was finally time to start slacking off, but Gideon’s parents wouldn’t hear of it. He needed completely straight A’s or else his parents wouldn’t let him out of the house this summer before he went away to college. The very thought of being forced to stay in the Lambeaux house all summer made his mind want to go numb. Sure, it wasn’t like the house was anything to sneeze at, but Gideon had friends he liked to visit and, even more importantly, guys he wanted to flirt with!

“Mister Lambeax perhaps you can tell us why?” Mrs. Peterson said, snapping Gideon out of his thoughts of cute boys and hot men he could flirt and tease.

“W-What?” he asked, dropping his pencil.

Mrs. Peterson pursed her lips, “Your take on why Hamlet acts the way he does, even before his beloved Ophelia.”

Gideon slouched in his seat, “I suppose you could argue the only person who knows for sure why Hamlet is acting the way he is would be to ask William Shakespeare himself. It’s one of the fundamental questions that keeps the story alive, whether Hamlet is acting or whether he truly is going insane. So, in my personal opinion? Hmm… I’d say he’s faking it.”

Mrs. Peterson smiled, “Excellent point Mister Lambeaux!” The bell rang, causing all of the students to praise their gods for their mercy. “We’ll pick up next week. Have a nice weekend everyone!”

After hanging around a bit, Gideon walked into the parking lot along with the other boys. He clicked the button on his keys and his white jeep blipped. On the way home he was hopelessly daydreaming over what he could do this weekend. Maybe he should stop by Pete’s place, since his brother was quite the attractive guy with a nice perky ass. Not amazing, but not bad.

Gideon readjusted himself thinking about it, his slacks tight against his thigh. The Lambeaux family was known for being… well endowed. Gideon personally had a massive uncut hog stuffed into his slacks, which is a big double edged sword. On one side, it got hot, itchy and tight in his pants sometimes. On the other hand, he looked fucking sexy in a speedo, especially if he was around gay guys who couldn’t help but stare. Sometimes even straight guys couldn’t look away from his package sometimes.

Gideon wouldn’t call himself the humblest person. His family was the richest in the town, so why even feign modesty? He walked like he owned the place and always wore expensive clothes and shoes. Even his face screamed rich, with smooth alabaster skin, crew cut blonde hair and eyes that always held a cockiness that was almost icy. Old money defined him and his family. They were the ones who wore suits to dinner and had a personal library. Gideon wasn’t mean about money, but he had a pride that couldn’t be ignored.

Suddenly he felt his car jump and screech. “God damn it!” He said, pulling over to the side of the road. The tire must have hit a piece of metal or a nail because there was a large puncture that quickly leaked air. “Son of a bitch!” he said, checking the back of the jeep. There was the spare, but Gideon had never taken a tire on or off before, so he was completely lost. Checking his phone, he groaned when he saw he had no service.

The road to his neighborhood was rather winding and off the beaten path compared to the rest of the town. Gideon leaned against the side of the car and kept trying his phone until he saw, or rather heard, a truck noisily coming down the road.

Waving it down, he hoped that the other person had a slight knowing of mechanics. Gideon had a small scowl when he noticed that the truck was beaten and dirty, probably from the more trashy part of town. Palimande could easily be split in three parts, the rich district (where Gideon lived), the middle class residential area, and the “Allotments” an area of the town where small plots of land were “allotted” to people, usually for trailers or motor homes. Those in the rich district and upper middle class were fortunate enough to go to St. Jude’s, while everyone else went to the Palimande Public High School. It wasn’t bad… per se… but compared to St. Jude’s it was pretty ratty.

The truck stopped behind Gideon’s jeep and parked. Gideon expected an older guy, maybe in a disgusting wifebeater and with greying, sloppy hair.

Well… to say the least, he got the wifebeater right, even though it wasn’t disgusting really….

Gideon stared as a hunk stepped out of the truck, about the same age as himself. He was in a tight wifebeater, showing off his thick torso, and a pair of high cut off jean shorts, showing off his entire leg and ending in a pair of lace up leather boots that had seen better days.

“Hey there!” the hunk said, “Looks like yyou could use a bit a’ help there!” The other boy was beaming with a white, innocent smile.

“Heh, yeah I think I have a flat. Think you could help me out there Mr…?” Gideon said, his wavy gold blonde hair whipping a bit in the hot wind.

“Real name’s Robert Johnson, but please call me Bubba,” he says, happily shaking Gideon’s hand. He could feel every callous, rough patch and scar. Clearly those hands had been used for labor a lot. It kinda turned Gideon on.

“Nice to meet you Bubba. I’m Gideon Lambeaux,” Gideon responded, realizing that his trousers were beginning to tighten. No no no, please no… he thought, trying to force himself down. Whenever he got even a little bit hard it was so obvious with a huge bulge in his slacks.

“Lambeaux? As in the Lambeaux family that owns jus’ about the whole town?” Bubba asked, his blue eyes wide. Gideon smiled at Bubba’s amazement.

“Yeah. I guess my family name precedes me huh?” He asked, scratching his head.

“Well’a course! Ah guess that explains why your hand is as soft as a baby’s behind. Here, lemme just get my tools out and we’ll get started!” Bubba said, turning around to reach into the bed of the truck. Gideon felt his breathing catch. Before him was one of the roundest, bounciest, and jiggliest asses he’d ever seen in his life. It wasn’t just that. It jiggled with every step, sending ripples like jello. According to reporting from the New York Times’s Peter Baker, President Donald Trump believed in advance of his Tuesday night Oval Office address that speaking to the public about his desire for a border wall was pointless.

And, according to Baker, he did not want to make the publicity stunt trip to the Texas border zone that is scheduled for Thursday.

“It’s not going to change a damn thing, but I’m still doing it,” Trump reportedly said before gesturing at some of his communications aides and saying he’s going to do it despite his doubts because “these people behind you say it’s worth it.”

Trump, however, was right. Time and again, even presidents who are universally regarded as eloquent public speakers and effective public communicators — think Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama — have tried and failed to bring public opinion around to their point of view by talking about it. Trump is not a charming, eloquent figure in their mold. The presidential “bully pulpit” is one of the office’s real powers, but it simply doesn’t work the way proponents of this kind of table-pounding strategy want it to.

And that goes double or triple for a crude and unpopular president like Trump. The place for him to make progress toward his goals on border security is the obscure back rooms of Congress where deals can be cut and priorities swapped. Talking about his agenda in high-profile ways — and dramatizing his commitment to it by shutting down the government — is completely counterproductive, serving only to fire up millions of banal Democrats who’ve never in their lives held an opinion about what kind of border security measures are appropriate in rural West Texas in order to oppose Trump at every turn.

Presidential speeches don’t persuade the public

George C. Edwards, a Texas A&M political scientist, undertook a comprehensive study of presidential speechmaking and public opinion for his 2006 book On Deaf Ears: The Limits of the Bully Pulpit.

What he finds is, basically, it doesn’t work: High-profile presidential addresses simply fail to influence public opinion.

At times, we end up mythologizing presidential communications in ways that are at odds with the public record. Edwards notes, for example, that FDR gave “only two or three fireside chats a year, and rarely did he focus them on legislation under consideration in Congress.” Of that group, the most clearly legislative-focused one was his 1937 advocacy for his court-packing plan — a plan that failed. And while some of the chats advocating for greater US involvement in World War II came to look prescient after Pearl Harbor, that doesn’t mean they were actually persuasive at the time.

A Drew DeSilver article for the Pew Research Center from 2013 reminds us that a string of Oval Office addressed by Ronald Reagan failed to move the needle on voters’ view of providing aid to the Contras in Nicaragua, George W. Bush’s congressional address on behalf of comprehensive immigration reform left opinion flat, and George H.W. Bush’s speech defending his bipartisan congressional budget deal did nothing to change views.

Indeed, the general tendency is for public opinion to move in the opposite direction from the president’s preferences — a regulatory model that’s known as the thermostatic model of public opinion.

Reagan was an influential president because public opinion became very conservative in the late 1970s, leading to election results in 1980 that allowed him to govern effectively while the strong economic rebound in 1983-’84 helped him secure a landslide reelection bid. But according to Edwards, “surveys of public opinion have found that support for regulatory programs and spending on health care, welfare, urban problems, education, environmental protection and aid to minorities increased rather than decreased during Reagan’s tenure,” while support for higher military spending fell.

The longer he stayed in office, in other words, the less the public worried that liberals were out of control and the more they worried that traditional liberal priorities were being neglected.

Similarly, public opinion on immigration keeps becoming more favorable the longer Trump persists in office. The good news, for him, is that as president, he has formidable tools at his disposal to shift policy in ways he thinks are important. But to make that happen, he needs to shut up.

Presidential involvement is counterproductive in Congress

Bipartisan dealmaking gets done all the time in Congress, even in today’s polarized atmosphere. But the key to getting a bipartisan deal done is typically for the president to avoid putting his hands all over it.

The landmark Every Student Succeeds Act that passed Congress in late 2015, for example, obviously wouldn’t have passed unless it incorporated a lot of education policy ideas that the Obama administration was on board with. But it was put together quietly, by negotiators from both parties, without a lot of presidential tweets and speechmaking.

The downside of this, from Obama’s point of view, was that signing it doesn’t count in the public imagination as an Obama achievement or a major win for his administration. But precisely because it didn’t count as a big “win” for Obama, congressional Republicans could sign on to it.

As the University of Maryland’s Frances Lee explains in her book Beyond Ideology: Politics, Principles, and Partisanship in the United States Senate,members of Congress have two different kinds of preferences. Preferences on issues are amenable to compromise because you can either accept half a loaf or else swap something you care about for something you don’t care about. But the preference to win is inherently zero-sum. For Republicans to get Democrats to agree to something on substance, they can’t also demand that Democrats hand them a political win.

In this view, there is no more catastrophic intervention possible than Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) chiming in to remark that “if Trump caves, it’s the end of his presidency.”

This may be a good way to motivate Republicans to hang with Trump even if they don’t really agree with his strategy. But House Democrats are going to look at that kind of effort and redouble their resolve to resist Trump. If you actually want the $5.7 billion appropriation to build steel slats, you need to lower the stakes, not raise them.

Trump has created a mess with no way out

Republican senators have taken to pointing out on social media that various prominent Democrats, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, have in the past voted for broadly similar fence-building measures.

But that merely goes to show how poorly the GOP has played its hand here. If Trump had simply stayed quiet and let congressional allies ask for a $5.7 billion fence appropriation, Democrats would have shot back that $5.7 billion is an awful lot of money and asked what they’re getting in exchange. Negotiations over appropriations are never easy, but both parties usually manage to come out of them with their top priorities intact.

The awkward problem for Trump would be that this steel bollard structure doesn’t seem like the 30-foot concrete wall he described during the campaign. But if he’d stayed quiet and reluctantly signaled willingness to sign a fence-rather-than-wall bill, he could’ve gotten it done.

Instead, while whipping his base into a wall fervor, he also created anti-wall enthusiasm on the Democratic side. Then he redefined “the wall,” and suddenly fencing he’d previously deemed inadequate and Democrats deemed unobjectionable became subject to the exact same polarization dynamics.

Then in the Oval Office speech, he made things worse again: He explicitly linked the slat wall not to some narrow technical Border Patrol objective about funneling people away from some specific patch of land, but to the entire Trumpian worldview, in which immigrants are coming over the border to kill you.

Taken literally, of course, it doesn’t have to be this way.

First-term Texas Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw, for example, gestured toward a deflationary account of what’s at stake that could conceivably have worked in Congress had Republicans pursued it.

The problem is that Crenshaw blames “Democrats” who “are pretending” that this is a high-stakes political battle about the big beautiful wall that Trump made the centerpiece of his 2016 campaign message. However, it’s clearly Trump who’s to blame.

You don’t shut down the government over a dispute between a $1.3 billion and a $5.7 billion appropriation — you pass a continuing resolution while you keep talking it over. But Trump has drastically elevated the stakes, over and over again, by shutting down the government, equating the proposal with his wall, and concocting a fake border crisis to which somehow a multi-year construction project is an urgently needed solution.

It’s incredibly stupid, and Republicans like Crenshaw who know better need to talk to Trump about it, not their political enemies. Reopen the government, start tweeting about something else, let congressional appropriators do their boring horse-trading, and they will find some money for some steel slats.

But to get that, Trump needs to be willing to humble himself on the fence-versus-wall semantics and step out of the spotlight. And that doesn’t sound like Trump at all.

Armchair Analyst: What you need to know about all 8 Knockout Round teams

And now it’s onto the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs. Twelve teams enter, one team leaves. Survival of the fittest. Survive and advance. Win or go home. I stole this lede from last year’s column because it’s eternally applicable. Don’t judge me.

Let’s take a closer look at the eight teams who will play in the Knockout Round, team-by-team, starting at the bottom (you can find times, dates, TV info here):

Real Salt Lake

WHY THEY’RE HERE: Mike Petke, after last week’s drubbing at Portland, said it was a “one in a million” shot that the Claret-and-Cobalt would make the postseason. That man should’ve bought a Mega Millions ticket last week.

RSL are here because the LA Galaxy had the worst final day breakdown I’ve ever seen in this league, coughing up a 2-0 halftime lead at home to lose 3-2 against a Dynamo side that had nothing to play for and had been acting like it over the past month. That second half was inexplicable.

But RSL are also here because by mid-May they started playing pretty well, and mostly kept playing pretty well throughout the rest of the season save for that unfortunate home-and-home with the Timbers. They are not spectacular at any one thing, but they have a lot of very good attackers, a defense that can win on the day and a legendary goalkeeper. They’re prohibitive underdogs going to LAFC for the Knockout Round, but weird things can happen when you play with house money.

FORMATION/TACTICS: It’s a 4-2-3-1 that relies upon overlapping fullbacks, wingers who roast defenders in isolation, and some unusual interplay between the center forward and No. 10 (which will be Albert Rusnak).

ACHILLES’ HEEL: They’ve conceded 58 goals, which is easily the worst of any playoff team. And they are just a wee bit susceptible to speed out of the midfield:

If you can dominate their midfield three and make them ragged, you put pressure on the backline to make plays. And for good chunks of time, the backline has not been able to make plays.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Damir Kreilach (F): Yeah I’ve got him listed as a forward, and to be honest he’s been pretty good playing as a sort of No. 9. He’ll have to find gaps and keep the LAFC backline honest, because if they compress the midfield RSL’s in trouble.

Corey Baird (W): When RSL needed a win in what was, at the time, their biggest game of the season, Baird dominated a decent New England side. He should start against LAFC even if it means benching a higher-priced player.

Marcelo Silva (CB): Silva’s generally been pretty good in his 2,200 MLS minutes, but he was a disaster against Portland last weekend. They need the reliable, veteran version to show up in the playoffs.

PRESSURE’S ON: The whole backline to get on the same page and stop allowing huge gaps. Do that at LAFC and you’ll take another L.

Philadelphia Union

WHY THEY’RE HERE: Like RSL, they’re here primarily because they played pretty good, winning soccer from mid-May onwards. Like RSL, there were some pretty high highs that were followed by some pretty low lows. So it goes with a young team.

“Why they’re here” as in “why are they playing on the road in the Knockout Round despite being in fourth place just two weeks ago” is baked into the above. They’re a veteran team in some ways, but a very young one in others, and have made a habit this season of coming up short in big games. Individual errors are part of it, but another part is that they use the ball a lot, and it’s hard to use the ball a lot when playing against good, smart, well-coached teams. And if you do that, you leave yourself open, and if you leave yourself open, you do something like lose 3-1 on the road at NYCFC on Decision Day.

FORMATION/TACTICS: They play almost every minute of every game in a 4-2-3-1 that can, at times, look like a 4-3-3.

They get heavy usage out of their central midfield, which is designed to control the tempo of the game and where on the field it’s played. When they’re going good, both fullbacks will push up and the Union will almost envelope teams, stretching them from touchline to touchline.

ACHILLES’ HEEL: Push that many numbers forward, and you are bound to get roasted on the counter once or twice. That’s one. For two, while their midfield is super-skilled, two of the players (d-mid Haris Medunjanin and No. 10 Borek Dockal) don’t provide much in the way of field coverage. Teams that play fast can blow them up.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Medunjanin (DM): There aren’t many deep-lying distributors in this league as good as he is at spreading the field and setting the tempo for the game. But he’s being targeted by smart teams now, and has become something of a defensive liability.

Keegan Rosenberry (RB): When the midfield gets gummed up, Roseberry becomes the primary distribution hub. He’ll probably have to serve that role in the playoffs while also providing lock-down defense on that flank.

Fafa Picault (W): Picault has had a good-not-great year diving in from the right wing to become a secondary goal threat. He can disappear from games, though, and the Union can’t afford that in the playoffs.

PRESSURE’S ON: The young center back pairing of Auston Trusty and Mark McKenzie. They’re both excellent prospects who have been, at times, excellent professional defenders this season. And at other times – like on Sunday in the Bronx – they have looked like out-of-their-depth 20-year-olds getting taught a lesson.

Philly are going to, in 2019, stick with the bet they made on them regardless of what happens in the playoffs. But it will be a lot easier to feel good about that bet if they put in a good performance (i.e., the opposite of what they did Sunday) this week.

Portland Timbers

WHY THEY’RE HERE: They rattled off 15 unbeaten from April to August, and when you do that you tend to make the playoffs. While the final three months of the year wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, and there were times when it looked like they might fall on their faces and out of the playoffs… nah.

Also, they have a road game in the Knockout Round because they lost on the final day at Vancouver. Had they won they’d be hosting FC Dallas instead of the other way around.

For what it’s worth, I think Gio Savarese was right to rest his starters and play the B team on Decision Day. But it’s got to sting at least a little bit.

FORMATION/TACTICS: After nearly a season’s worth of tinkering, Savarese settled on a 4-2-3-1 out of a deep block with a strong hankering to get out on the counter. They do have some other looks they can throw at teams, but that’s the main one.

ACHILLES’ HEEL: The above is really their only way to approach a game. When they’ve tried to carry a ton of possession and be that kind of team…

…they’ve been pretty thoroughly roasted no matter their shape. Savarese threw a lot of stuff at the wall this summer – new formations, new partnerships, Diego Chara out wide, etc. etc. etc., and none of it really worked.

If you don’t let the Timbers counter on you, you’ll probably beat them. Or at the very least, if you make them carry the ball upfield, you’ll get your own chances to blow through their lines and grab a couple goals of your own.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Jeremy Ebobisse (F): The 21-year-old has been excellent in very limited minutes this year, but seems to have locked down the starting No. 9 job. He needs to play beyond both his age and experience, and at the very least occupy the opposing center backs and link play.

David Guzman (DM): For a guy with his resume he’s been wildly up-and-down. They’ll need the bests out of the Costa Rican international both in winning the ball, and in getting it to good spots.

Liam Ridgewell (CB): His minutes decreased for the third straight year and it’s clear the 34-year-old has lost a step, to the point that he might not even be first choice at Dallas. If he plays, how he handles the speedy FCD attackers will determine a lot about the game.

PRESSURE’S ON: The core group. Ridgewell is part of it, as is Chara, as are Diego Valeri and Sebastian Blanco. All of them are 30 or older, and their title window probably isn’t going to stay open much longer – you could probably argue that this year is it, considering the age and relative trajectory of the CBs.

The good news is that the two most talented players on the field in this game are Valeri and Chara, and that Blanco might be No. 3. Even in a road game, you have to like a team with those odds if that’s the balance of power.

Columbus Crew SC

WHY THEY’RE HERE: They spent most of the year being really hard to beat in large part because they play the most defined and structured system in the league. So their lows were never really that low, save for gakking up an L at Orlando City in Week 34.

But because they don’t have much top-end talent, their highs never got particularly high. Put Ignacio Piatti on this team and I legit believe they’d be the best in the league, but the production from their wingers has been something substantially less than Piatti-esque.

FORMATION/TACTICS: It’s a 4-2-3-1 almost all the time. The d-mid drops between the CBs to split them and distribute, the fullbacks push up high, the center forward occupies both opposing CBs – but they don’t want to play through him, they want to play to him. Oh hell just take a look:

This is maybe the Crewiest Crew SC goal of the year. They’re really, really good at getting into those spots where killer balls come from, and because they’re so structured they’re really, really hard to counter on or break down.

By the numbers – boxscore and underlying – they had one of the league’s best defenses.

ACHILLES’ HEEL: By the numbers – boxscore only – they had one of the league’s worst attacks. Gyasi Zardes had 19 goals, but beyond that they got consistent production from exactly nobody, and massively underperformed their expected goals.

Simply put: Columbus are at a talent deficit in their attack against any other playoff team. Maybe Niko Hansen (who had the assist on that clip above) is ready to break out and be a difference-maker in the playoff pressure cooker. They probably need that from him, since neither Justin Meram nor Pedro Santos have been up to it in 2018.

For what it’s worth, Hansen is a much more direct type of winger than the other two, who are both pocket wingers. He does a good job of getting to the endline and extending the field, which can pay dividends (again, look at the above clip). That personnel change could usher in a slight enough tactical change to push Columbus through.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Wil Trapp (DM): He’s been smart and steady for a good chunk of his entire career, and will now need to play one of his very best games trying to keep Wayne Rooney and Lucho Acosta under wraps.

Meram (W): His return to Ohio has been a happy one but not yet a productive one, and it’s been more than a year since he looked like an elite attacker in MLS. The talent’s still there, and now he needs to bring it to bear.

Jonathan Mensah (CB): Mensah’s been much better in his second MLS season, and will almost certainly be back in the XI after missing Decision Day via yellow card accumulation.

PRESSURE’S ON: Gregg Berhalter. I think he’s an excellent tactical coach, and I like watching his team play, and I’d be fine with him as USMNT head coach (which is an idea we should all get used to). He’ll want to go into that job with as much momentum as possible, and a listless Knockout Round loss at D.C. would not be the way.

WHY THEY’RE HERE: From the beginning of March until the end of July they went 12-3-6, which gave them a huuuuge amount of breathing room at the top of the Western Conference.

Over the last three months they’ve done everything in their power to try to squander that breathing room, going 4-6-3 since the start of August and generally forgetting where the goal is. If the scale is “nosedive” to “tailspin” to “death spiral,” and 2017 was definitively a “death spiral,” this feels somewhere around “tailspin.”

They don’t look like a good team right now and haven’t for months.

FORMATION/TACTICS: I think we’ll call it a 4-2-3-1, though at times it looks like a 4-4-1-1 and at other times it’s a 4-4-2.

Whatever you want to call the formation, it usually involves two guys who can really run up top, and two guys who can really run on the wings, and two guys who win the ball and spray in central midfield, and all of that means a lot of counterattacking soccer.

It’s become their only way.

ACHILLES’ HEEL: It’s become their only way. And while good-to-great counterattacking teams have done serious playoff damage before…

…Dallas sure do miss some chances. (Full disclosure: I’m a big Dom Badji guy and I think the move to acquire him will pay out in the long term).

It’s going to be weird watching Dallas and the Timbers daring each other to carry possession.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Maxi Urruti (FW): He’s basically the No. 10 now, and he just scored his first goal in two months (and only his second since May), and he’s had big playoff performances before. He needs to again.

Carlos Gruezo (DM): There are moments where Gruezo looks like he’ll be amongst the league’s best No. 6s. There are other moments where he does not. Putting in a big performance against Valeri & Blanco would be a big boost for his rep (and his team)

Santiago Mosquera (W): Maybe the only guy in this FCD attack who can go out and win a game for you single-handed. But he has been wildly hit-and-miss in his debut season.

PRESSURE’S ON: I’d say Oscar Pareja at least a little bit. Yes, he righted the ship after last season’s misery, and yes he’s successfully navigated some choppy, player movement-related waters, but this is unquestionably his team now, and he’s built a machine that doesn’t score goals from open play. It’s a problem.

On the field, the pressure’s on the entire attack. Period.

D.C. United

WHY THEY’RE HERE: Because they got Wayne Rooney in July and he gave everybody else on the roster superpowers, apparently.

Rooney was the key to putting together one of the most remarkable second-half turnarounds in league history (and to be clear, he didn’t do it all himself). Also key was having 15 home games crammed into the second half of the schedule.

And guess what? They played so well they have another in the Knockout Round. You couldn’t really have asked for more if you were a D.C. fan.

FORMATION/TACTICS: Since Rooney came and Russell Canouse got healthy they’ve usually played out of a 4-2-3-1, scrapping the 4-1-4-1 they’d used earlier in the season. It allows them to press a lot higher, which they’ve put to good use:

They’ve also put Rooney’s passing ability to good use. He’s their No. 9, and functions as a No. 9, but also functions as a No. 10 at times when necessary. That’s allows Lucho Acosta in particular to get waaaaaay more goal dangerous, and has led to some very pretty interplay through the second half of the year.

ACHILLES’ HEEL: It feels like they don’t really have one right now, since their attack has mostly been humming along, and since their defense has given up more than a single goal just once in the last two months (and that was against the Supporters’ Shield-winning Red Bulls, so I’m gonna give them a mulligan).

The reality, though, is twofold: First, they’ve kind of stopped getting goals from the wing – none in over a month. Second, I’m just not sold on Frederic Brillant as a playoff-caliber center back. Just look at his record with NYCFC where he started all four games over in 2016 and 2017 as they conceded 11 goals and were eliminated. He’s had a solid enough second half of the season, but his lack of mobility is a problem. Especially given how much overlapping Ben Olsen demands from his right back.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Yamil Asad (W): No goals since Aug. 4 for the Argentine, who is probably the most talented attacker of D.C.’s winger corps. He doesn’t need to be a star, but he does need to be a threat.

Paul Arriola (RW/RB): He’s spent time at both spots, and his positional flexibility allows Olsen some tactical flexibility (i.e., be more attacking or more defensive?). I love Arriola on the overlap for what it’s worth.

Steven Birnbaum (CB): He’s quietly bounced back after a tough 2017, re-establishing himself as a dominant aerial presence and a rock of a defender. There’s nothing fancy about him, but when he keeps the game in front of him he’s very good.

PRESSURE’S ON: Everybody’s got a little. Olsen has to curb his BennyBall instincts and put out an XI that will actually go on the attack; Birnbaum has to marshall the backline; Rooney has to be Rooney, and Acosta has to be the little No. 10 who buried folks the second half of the year.

But really, I think it’s mostly on Bill Hamid. This time six years ago, he was considered the best young goalkeeper in the US pipeline. This time two years ago, and he was considered the best goalkeeper in the league. This time in 2018? He’s rarely mentioned in that company, and a strong playoff run could help propel him back into the conversation.

United will call on him to produce some big saves. He’s got to be up to the task.

WHY THEY’RE HERE: Because they came out of the gates hot and spent most of the year playing good, solid, and at times wildly entertaining soccer. Their worst stretch was when they went winless in five in the middle of the summer, but they followed that up by going unbeaten in six.

In other words they’re a good, deep, talented team. But they’re also a little bit soft and sloppy in their defensive third, which is why they’re playing in the Knockout Round instead of skipping the midweek fun.

FORMATION/TACTICS: It’s mostly what I would consider to be a 4-3-3, though at times it’s definitely been a 4-2-3-1 with Carlos Vela as a pure No. 10 operating in the hole underneath a center forward.

Either way, the idea is that the center forward occupies both opposing center backs, pins them, and that creates gaps for goal-scoring wingers to hit off the ball at speed. The Black-and-Gold scored 68 goals this year so it’s worked pretty, pretty well.

ACHILLES’ HEEL: Playing pretty soccer has come at something of a price, as their 52 goals conceded is second-worst amongst playoff teams behind RSL (who they’ll be hosting, so the game should be high-scoring, but because it’s MLS this is definitely going to PKs after 120 goalless minutes). Bob Bradley’s spent a good chunk of the year going sans d-mid, which has posed occasional problems:

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Danilo Silva (CB): Silva played at a good club (Dynamo Kiev) for a long time, but it’s hard to miss how slow he looks at times on an MLS field. He will be hard-pressed to keep track of all RSL’s jitterbug attackers.

Adama Diomande (F): He was dominant when he arrived in June, but has been a bit more passive lately. It’s clear that he’s the starting No. 9 now, and it’s clear that he has to be goal-hungry in his movements and overall approach.

Eduard Atuesta (DM): The young Colombian is the closest thing LAFC have to a real d-mid, and it’s worth noting the above goal came after he was subbed out at the half. If he’s healthy and able to go 90, and then plays like he did in September, that can elevate the whole team.

PRESSURE’S ON: Nobody reaaaaaallly. Sure they’ve spent a lot of money, but they just set the single-season points record for an expansion team and are going to have at least one game at home. It’s a cool story, just like Atlanta last year.

That said, Vela’s been billed as and treated as a superstar from the moment he put on that hat and looked up. He’s had a very good year, but a lot of that has been overshadowed by other stars doing bigger, better, brighter things.

So far.

New York City FC

WHY THEY’RE HERE: For the first half of the season they were at worst a top three team in the league, suffocating opponents with their press, ripping them apart with their passing, and playing through an injury to David Villa.

In the second half they were mostly pants. But then they came through bigtime on Decision Day, drilling Philly 3-1 at home, and that’s why they finished in third despite the tailspin of the last two months.

FORMATION/TACTICS: It really, really does change game-to-game. This last time out it was back to a 4-2-3-1 with overlapping fullbacks, attacking wingers and Maxi Moralez pulling strings from his No. 10 role:

This isn’t exactly “classic” NYCFC – they’re not really a “run in behind” team, and Moralez’s No. 10 role was significantly more defined than it had been when they played mostly out of a 4-3-3 – but it’s at least a little bit reminiscent of how they looked when they were at the best, flooding the box and getting the ball on Villa’s foot eventually.

They absolutely look like another team when they play at home, by the way. The fullbacks get higher earlier in the play, and it makes a big difference.

ACHILLES’ HEEL: At this point I think it comes down to a lack of identity. They don’t play the ball from the back as much as they used to, instead settling for long-balls and 50/50s in spots where they used to be able to just play through.

Because of that they’ve exerted less control over the shape and tempo of the game than they used to, which has meant the have to defend both more and deeper. It’s no one thing, but a collection of little things that’s made them more and more uncomfortable as the season’s gone on.

And while the Decision Day win was nice, it was just their third win in three months. 

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH:

Yangel Herrera (CM): The 20-year-old box-to-box midfielder – who is freaking awesome, it needs to be said – has gotten healthy just in time. But how much will he have left in the tank after going 90 on Sunday?

Jesus Medina (W): He finished the year with 6g/7a, which is ok. He hasn’t scored since August and hasn’t picked up an assist since July, which is not. So this is yet another team that desperately need a winger to carry some of the load.

Anton Tinnerholm (RB): He’s been one of the best attacking right backs in the league, and showed it again on Sunday. But when he goes the ever-more-fragile NYCFC backline can be exposed, as they were on Sunday when Philly earned a penalty.

PRESSURE’S ON: All the players, up to and including Villa, but especially on head coach Dome Torrent. He took over from Patrick Vieira midseason and rather than make little tweaks to the system and approach that made NYCFC borderline dominant, he’s brought in new personnel and tactics almost every week.

Perhaps there’s been real method to the madness and this team’s about to go HAM on the rest of the East. If that’s how it turns out, I’ll tip my hat. But it hasn’t much looked like that over the past three months, and a bad, brief showing in the playoffs will only embolden the segment of the fanbase in the Bronx that are calling for blood.

So I was driving along the turnpike here in Oklahoma the other day when I noticed a vibration I was pushing 70mph at the most in my 1998 ford ranger when i noticed this. my truck was valued by the claims adjuster at $5800 As the vibration continued I pulled over and slowed down right then I noticed and felt my tire tread from the rear drivers side fly out and do some damage to the bed the tire still had air in it but when i got out to look my tread had flown completely off along with some other truck pieces. The adjuster said more then likely the belt slipped or snapped or something along those lines the damage total was $2,695.00 less my $500.0 deductible the insurance will pay the remaining balance. it would have totaled out had the repair cost more the 50% of the value of the truck. Now my question will be tricky to answer because everyone has a different driving record I haven't filed a claim sense 2004 I hit a car ! guilty I have had speeding tickets but not sense 2007 I had one guy try and file a claim against me in 2008 he said i backed into him but he didn't carry insurance and had no proof and the claim was never paid out so I'm pretty sure my rates will go up come time for renewal I'm just trying to see by how much? can i call progressive would they tell me? do they even know???? Factory Muscle Cars do Battle at the Pure Stock Drags

What goes through your mind when the words “stock” are uttered regarding a muscle car? To many, the vehicle retains much of its factory equipment and the engine hasn’t been modified. But when we have “Pure Stock” Mopars, Chevys, and even Pontiacs low 12s and mid 11 second ETs at will, one has to wonder, are they really that Stock?

Before we can go further, let’s get something out of the way to avoid confusion regarding the Pure Stock competitors.

These are not the same cars that run in F.A.S.T. (Factory Appearing Stock Tire) class that tickle the nine-second barrier on bias ply, G70-15 Redline tires. We all know those engines look tame from the outside, but they’re infused with Pro Stock technology. Don’t let the factory air cleaner, valve covers, and exhaust manifolds fool you, the motors under the hoods of most F.A.S.T. racers contained the latest technology usually reserved for NHRA class record holders.

Enter the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race (PSMCDR). It has been a fixture for over two decades, and its organizers make sure to weed out any infiltration of F.A.S.T. competitors trying to weasel in. At the Pure Stock Drags, you cannot build a 500 cubic-inch stroker combo with a roller cam and hogged out heads than can inhale a tennis ball. That’s massively frowned upon. Plus, you’ll look like a tool to the 120 or so competitors at the event as you’re trying to backpedal before the stripe.

At PSMCDR, competitors are paired up based on qualifying times and compete in best two out three-match races. The organizers try to have different brands compete against each other to create rivalry that the fans can cheer for. There’s no trophy or big checks, your reward is knowing you’re able to beat the guy in the other lane with your tuning and driving skills.

What is allowed in the PSMCDR competition is to blueprint your motor to the NHRA Stock Eliminator specification as found on their Racer.com link. You must retain the stock intake and exhaust manifolds, carburetor, air cleaner, and other factory items such as valve covers, oil pan, etc. for the year, make and model claimed. Also, the car you wish to run must have built from 1955-1979 and have rolled off a United States or Canadian assembly plant (that’s so guys with those super cool Pontiac Beaumont Sport Deluxe with a 396 Chevy big block can compete).

The rules also require eligible cars been available with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles. Why you ask? This is to make the lightweight, package cars like the Swiss Cheese Pontiac Catalina, 1964,65, 68 Super Stock HEMI Mopars, Ford T-Bolts, and other purpose built factory drag race vehicles, ineligible to compete at the PSMCDR. Tire sizing is limited to no wider than a 60-series; that’s an equalizer in many cases.

One final note, if you’re brave enough to take on the challenge and think, “hey no sweat, within these rules, I can build a combo that’ll go low 11s at will!” Think again, at the PSMCDR, if you go faster than 11.49, the officials will pay you a visit, watch you pack up, and escort you out of the gate.

So, if you’re looking for a break from the car shows and cruise nights, you may want to check out next year’s Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race. It’s scheduled for September 14 and 15 at the Mid Michigan Motorplex, so there’s time to start working on your car and getting it dialed-in.

At this year’s race, the heavy hitters were two iconic muscle cars from Detroit’s illustrious past. A1968 Dodge HEMI Super and 1969 ZL-1 COPO Camaro, and both came precariously close to the 11.50 ET threshold. Rick Mahoney’s Bee qualified with an 11.51 @ 122.98 while Eric Simpson’s Chevy was right there with an 11.54 @ 120.48. During the shootout, the Mopar won.

James Kryta’s 1972 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 heats up the Goodyear Polyglas tires on his way to a low 12-second pass. During eliminations, Kryta shutdown a Six Barrel Road Runner to claim glory for Dr. Olds.

The show organizers honored the late Tom Shaw with a touching tribute. Tom was the editor of our sister pub Muscle Car Review and a great fan/supporter of the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race.

The fastest small block at the event was Owen Simpson in his 1970 Chevy Yenko Nova. The LT-1 350 scorched the pavement with an insane 12.31 @ 113.52 and had no problem out running the Camaro SS396 in the next lane.

20 year-old Adrianna Straub was racing her family’s 1970 Olds 442 W-30. The big 455 ran consistent mid to low 13-second ETs and she victorious in her shootout.

When was the last time you saw a 1971 AMC SC/360 Hornet running in the 12s? Heck, when was the last time you actually saw AMC SC/360 Hornet? Larry Weymouth brought this fine example of Kenosha’s answer to the econo-muscle car.

These might be Pure Stock Muscle Cars on street tires, but there’s always carnage. Paul Glasgo’s 1970 Pontiac Tempest split rear end housing when he dumped the clutch. It sounded like a howitzer artillery round going off.

The Pure Stock Drags showcase all engine combinations and David Byers 1970 Chevelle SS396 is a good example. Rather than the killer L78 402/375 horse combo, Byers’ runs the more sedate 350 horsepower package. With a best pass of 13.40 @ 105, he can hang with some heavy hitters like the 454 LS-6, Mopar 440 Six Packs, and Ram Air Pontiacs

The Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race is attracts all the orphaned brands including this gorgeous AMC AMX. The AMC guys have figured out how to make these 390s haul.

Speaking of orphans, there’s always a strong contingency of Studebakers tearing up the strip. Unlike the GM, Mopar and even Ford muscle car guys, you just can’t just pick up the phone and call a big mail order restoration or speed shop if you need parts for one of these things.
