The zeitgeist

Art by @rukafais
This is Samata Mahto, an OC I made after an idle train of thought about D&D classes one day. It went sort of like this:
1: D&D has two main kind of arcane spellcasters, Wizards and Sorcerers (There are more for sure but let's just focus on these two for now)
2: Sorcerers gain their magic from their blood, as their ability to cast spells is inherited from some kind of magical creature somewhere in their family tree. Wizards, on the other hand, gain their magic from endless rigorous study of arcane rituals.
3: That means that being a wizard is a skill that you can learn
4: Does that mean that there's someone who invented wizardry? Was there someone in the mists of history who can claim the title of being the First Wizard?
And thus, Samata was born. She lives in a world where Istavan, the god of magic, blessed certain people hundreds of years ago to be the first sorcerers. Their descendants are also sorcerers who currently run society as an aristocratic elite, taxing non-magical commoners into poverty so they can throw lavish parties and blasting anyone who argues with fireballs.
Samata was a university student who was content to just keep her head down and not be anyone important until, at her graduation party, a drunken sorcerer tried to use magic to open a bottle of wine and fucked it up hard enough that he accidentally cut Samata's arm off.
When she tried to have him brought to justice, the law fell ENTIRELY on his side because he was a sorcerer and she wasn't. She was told she was lucky SHE didn't get into trouble for trying to besmirch the name of such an esteemed sorcerer family. She fell into a deep funk, and enrolled in post-graduate courses to distract herself. Her main project was focused around her project to build a prosthetic arm that could use ambient magic in the atmosphere to power itself.
As she worked on the project, she realized that the principles she was developing could also be used by a non-sorcerer to use magic. When she presented her findings, the Powers That Be told her that this was EXTREME heresy and that she had to stop.
Having a fierce temper, Samata said "Fuck you" and began a revolutionary movement to spread knowledge of this new power, which she called "Wizardry", to the people before the sorcerers could stamp it out. She dreams of a future where magic is so common that sorcerers aren't relevant anymore.
More Samata art I've gotten over the years:
@rukafais again, of Samata posing for a portrait along with a jellyfish demon that metaphorically represents her pride which borders on hubris
@lucifinelovestruck
Expression sheet also by Ruka (I like their art style okay?)

Looking for beta readers for my novel
I'm looking for beta readers for my new novel while I also get in touch with an editor, so I'm gonna ask at every place I can about it. I'd be totally down to do a novel swap- one of my jobs is being an MFA Creative Writing professor, and I've been part of critique groups for years, so I like to think I'm good at feedback. Here's the pitch:
22-year-old Samata “Sam” Chandy is a girl who will do anything for love—even become a supervillain. Sam’s best friend and crush, Alyssa, is the superhero Whirlwind, and the hero is depressed with no villains to fight. Sam decides to secretly become the perfect rival for Whirlwind. Mentored by a talking cat who claims to be a legendary former supervillain, Sam brings excitement to her small town as the terrifying Tivala and builds her own self-confidence. But then Sam’s lies catch up with her, her rivalry with Whirlwind turns deadly, and her villainous mentor reveals dark secrets. Sam begins to question everything, even her own motives and her love for Whirlwind. Are there any true heroes? Can Sam be the villain that saves the day, or will she bring nothing but destruction to herself and her loved ones?
---
DM me if you're interested and I can give more details! We can even do a sample swap to see if we like each other's feedback.

Success comes to a person of faith and self-confidence, but there is no success for others. Hence practice hard.
The first sign of success is confidence that [one's efforts] will bear fruit. The second is being firm in that faith; the third is worship of the guru;
The fourth is equanimity (samata-bhava); the fifth control over the senses; the sixth is moderate eating; there is no seventh.
— Shiva-Samhita (3.16, 18-19)
