As newborn Samantha slumbers, cradled in his arms, Daniel thinks. 

A good man is rare enough. A good father rarer still. How lucky to have had two in his life. 

Two different people, two different men. Supporting him when he’d needed a hand, a friend. A teacher. A dad. Holding him up like bookends when the going got tough.

“I hope,” Daniel whispers tenderly, “That life is kind to you. And if not, that it’ll soon be.” He drops a kiss on her sparse curls, her tiny nose.

“And that I can be to you what they’ve been to me.”
