Fangirl, Vol. 1: The Manga Adapted by Sam Maggs. Illustrated by Gabi Nam. Based on the novel by Rainbow Rowell.
Series: Fangirl Manga, Vol. 1 Read time: 1 Day Rating: 4/5 Stars
The Quote: I always get lost in the library, no matter how many times I go. In fact, I think I get lost there more, the more that I go. Like it's getting to know me, and revealing new passages. — Levi (look my librarian ass loves this line)
Full disclosure I still haven't read Fangirl so I'm coming into this a bit differently from most. Basically, I always intended to read it but never got around to it. I now intend on reading it before volume two is released in June (? I think), before writing this review I put it on hold at my local library. But from what I can see at this point it is well suited to a visual adaptation. This appears to be a clever adaptation. Sam Maggs has ensured that it flows properly. Particularly when combined with Gabi Nam's illustrations which are all clearly distinct. Wren and Cather have the perfect facial structure similarities that were needed. It feels like it depends on how Cath is feeling as to how they look. Both Cath's fandom self and Simon and Baz are shown regularly. Nam's take on Simon and Baz is fantastic and slightly varied. What I can clearly see from this is why people wanted Simon Snow's story so badly Rainbow sells their story well.
Cath and Wren are the ideal for the demonstration of growing apart and finding identity as twins. I quite like Reagan. I really like that Cath is Reagan's mealtime bitching buddy, I like that it is clearly leading to a friendship. Also, the best friendships to me can be shown through what you see in the random people around you. Personality traits. Nick and Levi have this interesting counterbalance thing going on. And well Dad is trying his best, he is a great representation of a parent. That's all I'm going to write in the review for now. I'll probably reread it at a later date and might be able to comment better.

Blog Recommendation Of The Month
February 2023 - Interview
@gbiechele
1. When and how did you start to become interested in photography?
My interest in photography began during the time I was in college, majoring in natural resource conservation. I was involved in many outdoor activities, and found myself drawn to landscape / nature photography. Over the years I continued to make pictures, but not with the same passion. This passion was rekindled with the advent of digital photography. I was drawn to digital photography because of the degree of personal control and creativity this medium affords. I could processes my images myself and not have to rely on a photo lab. I was able to tweak and adjust them to more closely reflect my own vision.
2. If you’d have to describe yourself as a photographer in one sentence, what would that sentence be?
I am a photographer who tries to capture the essence of the natural world, and in doing so, to better understand my place in it.
3. Is there something you learned during your photographic journey that you would have loved to know when you were just starting out?
To those just starting out in nature photography, I would say that it is very important to spend time studying the work of the masters (Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell, Freeman Patterson, Eliot Porter, Sam Abell, and Kristi Odom, to name a few). Then, forget about them and photograph what you are passionate about. If you are serious, try to make photography part of your daily (or at least weekly) routine. Use it as a way to engage with the world and your surroundings and express your own unique feelings and perspective. The more you photograph in this way, the more you will come to discover that there are always meaningful images to be made all around you.
4. What inspires you?
Beautiful light inspires me. Light that lands on a subject and calls out “Photograph me!” I am especially inspired by natural forms, the shape of a leaf, the arc of a branch, the water etched patterns on beach sand, fissures in a stone. It is a challenge to integrate these forms into an expressive image.
5. Your blog consists to a large degree of nature photography. What is the big challenge in nature photography for you?
For me, the biggest challenge in nature photography is to see a subject clearly and deeply, and to try to capture what I see with my camera. To do this I have recently been combining daily photography with journaling to uncover fresh insights into myself and the world around me. I believe these new insights are helping my photography to evolve.

Okay, since Fleetwood Mac obviously exists in the DJATS verse, there's articles comparing Billy and Daisy to Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, that they both shut down quickly. Billy and Camila read the articles out loud and laugh at them, because they think it's ridiculous, especially after Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham break up. There are also fans who think Camila "gets in the way of" Daisy and Billy being together, and again, everyone thinks it's ridiculous bc Billy doesn't even like Daisy like that. Idk,I just have a lot of headcanons based off of the fandom misogyny I've seen, bullying actresses (it happened to Grace Van Dien in the stranger things fandom) bc their character "gets in the way" of a ship. Thank God there's no shipping drama in the DJATS fandom,at least not on here. But yeah, I wholeheartedly hc Camila struggling with fans who attack her bc they ship Billy with Daisy.
I always imagined Fleetwood Mac don't exist in the DJATS-verse. (There's the book Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, in which the protagonist is a huge, well, fangirl of a fictional wizard Simon Snow, who attends a boarding school, I don't need to tell you what that's inspired by, and then one character suddenly namedrops Harry Potter. That took me out bc to me the book takes place in a world where there is no HP, bc Simon Snow is their HP. It's the only gripe I have with that book, it's otherwise good and depicts social anxiety well.)
I should imagine Camila pays no attention to such articles. I do wonder from time to time how partners and relatives of celebs handle the gossip, and it's much harder to escape it now with the internet. The best way to deal with such things is to ignore it. The wives/gfs of popular male stars must have it hard. In fact I have a perfect example at hand--FKA twigs. She got an absolute barrage of abuse from Robert Pattinson's fangirls when she was dating him. The album Magdalene is about that (srsly one of my faves albums, I must have played it as often as Evermore. Cellophane and Tolerate It are spiritual sisters.) He's now with Suki Waterhouse and they've just had a baby so I hope Suki is having a better time with it.
I think everything is the other way round with DJATS, though. The only hate I have seen was towards Billy, and by extension Sam Claflin, but then my perception might be skewed. I'm still surprised about what a beloved character Daisy is, when better female characters than her get crucified for nothing (Rory Gilmore, to name an example). She's not even that interesting as a character. Give me Karen, Camila, show!Simone and even Bernie instead, any time.
I feel like I have derailed from your original question. Actually I have thought about there being gossip about Billy and Daisy, but Camila trusts him (discard anything stupid the show did as more bad writing). Post band breakup, there may still be an article or two full of speculation, but she doesn't read that (she doesn't have time for such publications). The most important thing is that they protect Julia.

Sequels and retellings, mostly.
Also read: Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu and “Death of Snow” by Tansy Rayner Roberts.
Reread: Fangirl and Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.
Total: Eleven novels (including one audiobook), one graphic novel, one short story collection and one short story.
My favourites: The Swallows’ Flight (perspicacious and poignant and vividly-written), Return of the Thief (tense, with twists and revelations I didn’t anticipate and a satisfying ending) and “Winter Songs for Summer” in Scattered Showers (the early noughties tech made me nostalgic and Summer’s relationship with music was interesting).
I’d also recommend: Ten Thousand Stitches, Great or Nothing, Fangirl vol. 2, Scattered Showers and If the Shoe Fits.
Cover thoughts: The covers for both The Swallows’ Flight and Great or Nothing are lovely. I like the internal illustrations for Scattered Showers more than its cover. I think I would have read Return of the Thief sooner if its cover were less ominous.
Titles, authors, genres and ratings listed below, with links to my reviews on LibraryThing.
The Swallows' Flight by Hilary McKay. Children’s historical fiction about growing up during the 30s and WWII, set in England and Germany. 4☆
Naughty Dragons Try School! by Natalie Jane Prior (illustrated by Simon Howe). Sequel to Naughty Dragons Make Trouble! Children's fantasy. 3½☆
Ten Thousand Stitches by Olivia Atwater. Romantic Regency fantasy about a housemaid who receives an offer of help from a faerie lord. Same world as Half a Soul. 3½☆
If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy. Contemporary retelling of Cinderella, about participating in a dating reality TV show. Single POV. 3½☆
By the Book by Jasmine Guillory. Contemporary retelling of Beauty and the Beast, about an editor's assistant and an uncommunicative author. Single POV.
“Death of Snow” by Tansy Rayner Roberts. Murder mystery retelling of Snow White. Short story.
Great or Nothing by Joy McCullough, Caroline Tung Richmond, Tess Sharpe and Jessica Spotswood. A retelling of the later part of Little Women, set during WWII. 3½☆
Circling Back to You by Julie Tieu. Contemporary office romance.
Fangirl: the manga (volume 2), adapted by Sam Maggs and Rainbow Rowell and illustrated by Gabi Nam. Part 2 of 4, adapting Rowell's novel about a fangirl at college. 3½☆
Scattered Showers by Rainbow Rowell. A collection of nine short stories. Three stories revisit characters from her novels. Most are romantic. 4☆
Four Kings by Karan K Anders (aka Andrea K. Höst). Sequel to The Book of Firsts. A very low-key sort of book about uni students who have the resources to pursue their passions -- in terms of their studies, artistic ambitions, paid work and unconventional relationships. 3☆
Return of the Thief Megan Whalen Turner. Fantasy. Final Queen's Thief book. 4☆
