1960 Edsel Deluxe Hardtop
This Day in Auto History
6.7.1954
The Ford Motor Company formed a styling team to take on the project of designing an entirely new car that would later be named the Edsel. The decision came as Ford enjoyed its greatest historical success in the 1950s. The 1955 Thunderbird had outsold its Chevy counterpart, the Corvette, and the consumer demand for automobiles, in all price brackets, was steadily increasing. The Ford Motor Company consisted of four brand names: Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, and Continental, listed from lowest to highest in price range. Ford executives believed that there was a gap in the marketplace between the Mercury and the Lincoln, where a new car would compete against GM's Oldsmobile and Buick lines. In the mid-1950s, Americans seemed to have an insatiable hunger for high horse-powered, heavily styled cars, with lots of chrome and many accessories. So Ford planned to fill the public's appetite with a suitable answer. The company spared no expense in the development of its new car, even going so far as to employ famous American poet Marianne Moore to supply possibilities for its name. After an extensive name search and no satisfactory result, somebody suggested that the car be named after Henry Ford II's father, Edsel. Ford balked at the suggestion initially and later relented, on the grounds that his father deserved a tribute; he urged the car's designers to live up to his father's name. Edsel had always had a knack for design, even if his business sense hadn't always lived up to his father's expectations. The Edsel project was launched with great fanfare and vigorous advertising. During the years between the car's conception and its production, the American economy took a downturn. By the time the Edsel was released in 1957, the high end of the car market had once again contracted. Public reaction to the car's exaggerated styling was tepid at best, with particular objections aimed at the Edsel's awkward-looking "horse collar" grill. Sales for the car started slowly and foundered. Newly appointed company Vice President Robert McNamara was charged with the task of salvaging the operation. Had McNamara held the position years earlier, historians point out, the Edsel project may never have been taken on, as McNamara strongly believed Ford should concentrate on the economy car market. McNamara attempted to improve the car's construction and appearance, but when the attempt failed, he was forced to halt production of the car at a disastrous loss of $250 million. To this day, the Edsel remains the biggest failure in American car history, "a monumental disaster created for tomorrow's markets created by yesterday's statistical inputs." History has treated the Edsel more kindly, as its looks are now considered to be an attractive example of 1950s flair. Like its namesake, Edsel Ford, the Edsel has come to be known as an unfair victim of circumstance.
This 1960 Edsel Deluxe Hardtop was photographed at Das Awkscht Fescht at Macungie Park in 2022.

You suggested some merformer based asks, so consider this: Merformer! Shockwave x reader? Maybe the reader is a marine biologist and isn't used to being studied, especially this... thoroughly?
As usual I went way overboard, and with a slightly different vibe than you might have intended so I hope you like this, anon!! I was imagining a TFP Shockwave but of course you're free to imagine him as you choose!
For those who don't know: if you like my writing style, you can always commission me, and please reblog to help spread my work! Thank you!
Note: Thalassicon is just my word for what merformers call themselves.
Holding on tightly to Shockwave, you reminded yourself that oxygen was limited as you sucked in each careful breath from your scuba tank, and that he'd promised you it was just a quick swim through these dark tunnels to reach his lair. You trusted him completely, but it was impossible to shake your instinctive anxiety as his massive frame pulled you through the underwater caverns without a trace of light. Time seemed to drag on until a light blue glow at the end of the path caught your eye through your goggles.
As the light grew brighter, the water around you became warmer as Shockwave had promised, and you clung less tightly to his back to raise your head for a better look, almost forgetting to breathe when he finally swam clear of the tunnel and entered a massive underwater cave.
Bioluminescent plant life gave the water a beautiful blue glow, their long, delicate tendrils swaying with the currents Shockwave left in his wake as he pumped his tail without urgency to swim forward. You barely remembered to hold onto his back as you tried in vain to mentally catalog the rich biodiversity before you, wondering if the mech had cultivated it all himself just to keep his home suitably lit. As you stared in open awe, a sudden gesture for you to let go caught you quite by surprise, and you blushed at having lost yourself to the beauty of it all. Releasing your hold on his back, you allowed the merformer to take control when he spun to face you, trusting him completely as he cupped your tiny body in one servo and pointed upwards. Overwhelmed by everything, you merely nodded and allowed him to take you to the rippling surface overhead.
The air above was thankfully far fresher than you could have anticipated so far beneath the ocean, and there was also no shortage of light to see by either, thanks to a similarly breathtaking species of bioluminescent plant casting its soft glow down from the high ceiling above.
"You can breathe freely. I installed air scrubbers to keep oxygen at an ideal level." Shockwave instructed, holding you at the surface so you didn't have to waste your energy treading water. Happily removing your mask, you took a deep breath and massaged the creases left on your face, savoring the feeling of unimpeded oxygen before you looked around for a better idea of your surroundings. The cave was absolutely massive, and had a number of adjoining caverns with varying levels of exposed stone atop which Shockwave stored his less water friendly technology and salvage. More than a few boat engines the size of automobiles were stacked about and waiting to have their parts repurposed, along with a number of shipping containers you doubted had been pulled from shipwrecks. All in all, his lair felt just as much like a pirate's treasure cove as it did a scientist's lab, and you loved it more than words could convey.
"I never thought you'd actually bring me here. Am I your first visitor?" you asked in awe, allowing him to pull you in as he floated on his back. Setting you down atop his ample chest, he ensured you were lying comfortably on your belly before he answered your question with a single word and a nod.
"Affirmative."
You smiled and looked up at the glowing vines swirling along the stalactites overhead, sighing softly at the beautiful scene and the warm water lapping at your wetsuit. Despite rarely understanding his technological feats thanks to your biology focused education, you were awed by everything he'd accomplished, and were beyond grateful to be given the privilege to behold his home. More than a few conversations had alluded to how his culture considered visiting one's home to be a great gesture of trust saved for only the closest of friends and lovers. Considering the hidden depths of your feelings for him, that thought carried far more weight in your head than you'd intended, so you quickly pushed it down as you always did such things. "Thank you for trusting me, Shockwave. I'm honored."
"You have proven yourself to be my ally." he affirmed, gently taking your hand between his thumb and foredigit. The touch made your heart flutter, especially as you met his single red optic and saw his helm accents twitch as they did when he was processing deeper than usual emotions. "I am not one for my people's superstitions, but I do believe in our custom of reciprocating gestures of trust. You gave me reason to trust you completely, and I wish to do the same."
Straight away, your mind snapped back to the fateful day he spoke of, the terror and uncertainty still raw thanks to how little time had passed. It had been a blur; the ambush by government officials, the net that had unintentionally caught you with him, and his shock when you took the time to cut him loose after freeing yourself. Echoes of the shots that had so narrowly missed the both of you were still clear in your mind, and you could easily recall how he'd held you close to take the hits as he swam for your lives... In the moment freeing him had just been a matter of course, and looking back on it you couldn't imagine doing anything else. You needed him to know that, even if he still seemed to struggle believing it. "You don't have to reward me for what I did. It was the right thing to do, they were going to hurt you."
"Perhaps." he mused in deep thought, going quiet and averting his optic. You allowed him time to think, able to tell from his twitching antennae that he was running over something very challenging in his processor. Looking ready to drop the topic and move on for several defeated seconds, he suddenly steeled himself and met your gaze, holding your hand all the more tightly as he carefully enunciated every last word. "But you have done far more than earn my trust. I have found our time together... enriching.
Though he obviously didn't expect a reply, you were in no shape to give him one, the shock on your face giving him another moment of pause before he forged ahead. How like him, you'd have thought if your brain weren't frozen, to drop something like this so suddenly... Neither one of you excelled at handling your emotions.
"You are unlike any human I have ever met, observed, or would have theorized possible." he continued to confess, obviously struggling but feeling a deep need to get through this. Your heart flipped at his words, beating strongly enough you were halfway worried he'd be able to feel it through your wetsuit, though if he did he didn't let it stop him. The merformer looked to your tiny hand in his, sharp optic tracing all the details imperceptible to the human eye as he allowed himself a rare emotive sigh from his vents. "I have grown very close to you, even if our relationship started on purely academic terms."
"Shockwave..." was all you could say, your voice locked in your throat and your eyes damp with more than seawater. Perhaps in your most self indulgent dreams you'd have allowed yourself to fantasize about such a moment, but to have it happen in reality, which was hardly known for its kindness, you simply couldn't dare to believe you'd be so fortunate. Then again, hadn't your entire relationship been a kind of fantasy made reality? Bumping into this brilliant mech, earning his interest with your scientific endeavors, beginning a relationship of mutual academic benefit that had deepened into something more... You only wished you could find enough words to tell him you felt the same, and had for such a long time. Some of the other feelings he created within you could be discussed at a later date...
Before you could try to force out a reply, Shockwave shifted once again, his antennae twitching backwards and his gaze dropping more out of what you dared to call bashfulness than simple nerves. It seemed the merformer wasn't done surprising you with shared yearning
"For my people, bringing another to your home means more than displaying trust. It is also intended to express a certain amount of... desire." he explained in the most halting voice you'd ever heard from him, usual confidence nowhere to be found.
"O-oh?" you squeaked, hopeful the glow wasn't bright enough to betray the blush turning your entire face to fire. He couldn't possibly be speaking of the same kind of desire that had made you wonder what his servos would feel like on your bare skin, or the kind that had you theorizing what certain parts of his anatomy looked like and hoping to find out... Thankfully for your sake, he seemed even more overwhelmed by what he was trying to say, enough that he didn't even seem to notice your struggles.
"We... do not approach such matters like humans. When a Thalassicon wishes to have a relationship that is more... intimate, there is not a period of courting. That is not to say we do not engage in courtship, only that it is not a prerequisite for physical relations. Intimacy is more for... expressing a certain level of trust, as well as desire, and..." he drifted off, the uncertainty in his voice so thick it weighed down every last word. Slapping his face into the palm of his servo, he mumbled in total defeat, too overcome to continue. "This is very hard to articulate."
The last thing you wanted was for him to stop, especially when you could swear you understood what he was trying to say, and very much wanted the conversation to continue in the direction it seemed to be heading. Taking a firmer hold of his hand, you pulled it close to yourself and sat up quickly. Something primal within you gave you the capacity to speak. "Then... show me? Use your hands?"
"If I have your permission-" he began, holding his servos just shy of your wetsuit.
"My full consent, and ask questions if you need to." you explained as you stripped off your mask and oxygen tank in record time, fully motivated to get things moving. You dared to hope you really understood just what he was getting at, that he yearned for your relationship to be more physical, and that your own desire for the same was soon to be quenched. It was much harder to be bashful with such giddy excitement fluttering through your belly.
A surge of similar energy moved through his massive frame, and you felt all thirty or more feet of him become alive beneath you, making your position straddling his chest all the more exciting. Biting your lip to hold back an overwhelmed whimper, you welcomed both of his servos as they lifted from the water, taking a hold of each one and guiding them to your body until his digits settled on your hips. Straight away you felt how different the contact was from any time he'd touched you in the past, a realization that only intensified when he began to explore, sliding his servos over the tight fabric of your wetsuit with all the deliberation one would expect of a scientist. You sat up straighter to open more of your body to him, jaw going visibly slack as his thumbs massaged up your front and stopped just shy of your breasts.
Recalling that you also had a pair of hands that were very skilled at studying aquatic anatomy, you let out all of your pent up curiosity and arousal and began to explore his massive frame, tracing the seams on his chest and savoring the smoothness of his mesh. As his touches stirred something in you, so did yours in him, the hum of his spark intensifying beneath your very fingertips. You were flattered and awed by the mech's receptiveness to your obviously desired advances.
"May I see you as you are?" he asked suddenly, tapping a digit over the tiny zipper on your front. Thoroughly pleased by the bold request, you met his gaze to find far more of his usual confidence had returned, a change you hoped was here to stay. Your certainty that it would intensified when his other servo traced your curves and took their time savoring the softness of your organic body. "I wish to know you without obstacles."
"Here, let me..." you began helpfully, pulling down the zipper in a manner you hoped read as inviting. He'd made his fascination with human anatomy known only in passing, but as you unzipped your suit and revealed a thin sliver of skin beneath, his optic betrayed far more than just academic interest. Loving the attention, you tried to play it cool as you peeled the wet fabric off your shoulders, moving slowly thanks to how the swimsuit clung to you when it was soaked. You managed to free the upper half of your body without too much trouble, baring your breasts to the open air and earning a quiver of excitement from his frame before you decided help would make the remaining process much easier.
"If you could help me pull off- oh!"
To your continued surprise, he didn't hesitate to follow your instructions, peeling off your wetsuit in a series of precise movements and leaving you naked on his chassis as he tucked it away in a convenient subspace.
Completely bare and wet, you looked to him in a brief moment of total vulnerability, fears of rejection rising up only to be quickly squashed down when his optic dilated and his voice rumbled more deeply than you'd ever heard it before. "Fascinating..."
Shockwave did just as you'd bid and began to explore, starting at your legs that had so often fascinated him as a being with a tail. Tracing the shape of your muscles and somehow finding every sensitive nerve along the way, he made a point to massage your thighs, encouraging you to spread them but not yet focusing between them. The mech was approaching your body as one would an exquisite meal, savoring every last bit and saving the very best parts for last. You were a bit too overwhelmed to be impatient when he made it to your ribs, circling his thumbs over the tender flesh on the sides before he dipped inwards to heft your breasts, making your breath hitch as he finally got to your erect nipples. Biting your lip was the only way to hold back a moan.
Beneath you, his frame grew heated, and you felt an almost crackling energy building in the mech as his arousal increased with your own. All the little feelings for him that you'd pushed down over the past few months were returning with interest, creating a fire between your legs that refused to be satisfied by simple touches and demanded attention. Granted your own boldness by your pent up needs, you took a hold of his wrists and pushed them downwards, sitting up to bring your pussy into view in the hope he might skip exploration and go straight for experimentation. A needy whine was your attempt at an invitation.
To your delight and near overwhelm, Shockwave growled at the sight, his desire letting you know the move was the right one even before he spoke with the same level of open, feral want. "How do you prefer to be stimulated?"
"Clit, circles, please." you begged, incapable of anything more eloquent. Thankfully he was quite the master of blunt communication, and seemed to find the invitation more than sufficiently invigorating from the desperation with which he slipped his servo between your legs. Supporting your weight entirely, he began to rub his way from the tender skin between your legs to the sopping lips of your entrance, where he found a wealth of lubrication to get started with.
Your first moan echoed along the ceiling when his digits met your throbbing clit, the smooth mesh delighting you more than you could have ever imagined as he began to circle the erect bud as you'd requested. It occurred to you that you'd never once described such human anatomy to him, and even though you'd learned your species were shockingly similar in this regard you were confident the speed with which he'd found your sweet spot meant he'd been doing research. That thought alone had you moaning far more shamelessly, your hands holding on tightly to his servo as he adjusted you to press his thumb into your clit whilst his foredigit fingered your entrance to test its flexibility. Your eyes rolled back when you felt the heavenly stretch of him slipping inside.
"Need this. Need you." he said quickly, tail slapping the water as your open enjoyment egged him on. Dropping his spare servo to his waist, you had just enough scientific curiosity available to whip your head around in time to see his modesty plating retract, which allowed for an erection nearly as long as you were tall to swing forth with a splash. Beholding the full size and intensity of his arousal made your walls pulse around his digits, something that was not missed on the mech as he began to pump with a groan of pent up, frustrated arousal. You were hypnotized by the impressive purple length, watching in open mouthed desire as his digits moved up and down its streamlined ridges and simple rows of red biolights.
"Shockwave..." you moaned again, grinding down into his palm as the water around you grew choppy from your shared exertions. Hearing his name had exactly the effect you wanted, his thrusting digit going deeper and curling up into your sweet spot as his thumb pressed firmer circles into your clit. The warmth of your arousal running down to pool in his palm made the scientist all the more eager, his tail churning the water as his other servo splashed into the waves with every pump of his erection. Though you wanted to watch him work, you found your eyes rolling back as a familiar coil began to build in your lower body, the promise of a long overdue release making it more or less impossible to care about anything beyond the ecstasy of the moment.
"I'm so close!" you announced to encourage him, cries spilling out of you with every thrust of his wrist. Thighs quivered on either side of his palm as you practically bounced in his grasp, moving yourself to the rhythm of his masturbation and praying both of you could reach completion at around the same time. Judging by how his every sound was some animalistic growl or moan of want, you doubted it would be long, especially with his noises adding so much to your own enjoyment. There was something unspeakably flattering about having such a massive, beautiful, intelligent being moaning over what they were doing to you...
A sudden twist of his deeply buried digit and an increase in the pressure on your clit did you in without warning, making your entire body spasm in his grip as you came hard around him, throbbing walls sending waves of ecstasy through your very being. Stars swirled in the spinning lights overhead, forcing you to grab him for balance as you rode out the release you'd needed for weeks without relief.
Seeing you so overcome pushed Shockwave into his own explosive release, his spinal strut arching as he came in plentiful ropes of transfluid that gushed over himself and grazed your bare back. Moaning in euphoria, he somehow managed to keep you balanced and upright as his hips twitched into every throb, the remainder of the mess being washed away by the waves even before reality came hurtling back. You managed to catch a glance of his near theatrical release before your own orgasm faded into the afterglow, and by the time he did the same you were much closer to unconsciousness than you would have thought possible.
Collapsing in his grip, you very nearly fell off into the water before he released his spent spike to hold you up with both servos, chassis rising and falling as he ventilated hard to cool off. Naked and completely satisfied, you allowed the warm water to welcome you as you were laid flat on his chest, your own ribs expanding repeatedly for deep breaths of exertion. You weren't sure you'd ever been more spent in your life...
"I built a small station on the far side of my lair. There is a platform on which you can rest and dry off." Shockwave said suddenly, total exhaustion belying the monumental step forward the two of you had just taken. It didn't even really hit you when you nodded for him to proceed, your limp body staying just where he kept it on his chassis as he swam slowly in the direction indicated. Purring, you noted the lingering warmth of his release on your back with a bit of pride. Shockwave had needed this just as desperately as you had...
Laying on his chest as the two of you lazily floated towards your destination, you wondered what might come next in your relationship, but admittedly couldn't think of much of anything in depth with so little energy to spare. It was enough just to be happy with him, with how everything had turned out since the fateful day the two of you had met... Judging by how tenderly he cupped you to himself as he swam along, you dared to believe he felt the same way, and if he preferred to show such emotions the way you'd just experienced you were more than fine with it.

Hello! Do you happen to know any fics where it’s ‘enemies to lovers’ but it’s really more like Crowley irritates Aziraphale and Aziraphale thinks they hate each other?
For example - Matching Speed by crepesandoysters on Ao3, where Crowley sort of antagonizes Aziraphale?
Thank you for all you do!!
Hi! Here are some light-hearted bickering annoyed enemies-to-lovers fics for you...
Thistlewood Lane by Caedmon (T)
The house next door to Aziraphale's, on Thistlewood Lane, has been empty for quite a while. He hopes a nice young family is going to move into it, or someone he can get along with. But his hopes are dashed when someone comes tearing down his quiet residential street at a million miles an hour blaring obnoxious music. Aziraphale marches over to give his rude new neighbor a piece of his mind, and is a little unsettled to find that he's quite attractive. But that doesn't salvage the situation, the two of them end up getting off on the complete wrong foot, and a little neighborhood rivalry begins. Until it ends.
it had to be you by curtaincall (M)
“What I’m saying,” said Aziraphale, looking fixedly ahead, “and please don’t take this as a personal insult in any way, is that an angel and a demon can’t be friends.” “Why not?” “Because,” said Aziraphale, firmly. “It’s against the order of things. You’re supposed to tempt. I’m supposed to thwart. We can’t go being friends.” * A canon-divergent AU inspired by When Harry Met Sally.
Press L in the Chat (for Love) by Phoenix_Soar & Djapchan (E) (+ podfic!)
Bickering fan-content creators Aziraphale and Crowley only have three things in common — they are both avid fans of a new revolutionary TV series about pirates, they are popular for their fantastic fanfiction and fanart… and they are members of the same discord server. Neither of them likes the other, but across the chaotic virtual world of a discord chatroom, who knows what can happen when these two unlikely fans are paired up for an exciting collaboration? Us. We know ;)
Planes, Trains & the Apocalypse by walking_contradiction42 (T)
Crowley only wanted to get home for Christmas. Unfortunately, a sudden onset of winter thwarts his plans. Making his way down to Tadfield by the most obscure means of transportation he is forced to stick with his very annoying seat mate Aziraphale. Only someone up there (or down there, or wherever it is that things are nowadays) seems to have it in for him, because trouble seems to be waiting for them around every corner. Or the Planes, Trains & Automobiles AU all have been waiting for
A Bit of Crumpet by Fyre (T)
With a handsome, successful fiance and a respectable home in Manhattan, Aziraphale Fell thought his life was more than adequate. He never expected to be jilted in a long-distance telephone call and so he sets out for England to find out exactly what's going on and gets a lot more than he bargained for. French Kiss AU
Fire, Bridges, and other Sensible Idioms by KiaraMGrey (E)
To: The person who stopped the washer in the middle of my wash cycle and took my clothes out just to wash your own… You are an arsehole! Unfortunately for you, so am I. You can find your wet clothes frozen outside in the snow. If you have any problems with this, come see me in 301. or Aziraphale has a new neighbor, and they certainly don't start off on the right foot.
And the one you mentioned...
Matching Speed by crepesandoysters (T)
Aziraphale isn't expecting much from the group ski trip he's been roped into, but he's determined to make the best of it. That is, until he meets Anthony Crowley — who makes a show of skiing like a daredevil — and it's irritation at first sight. For the most part...

The European Union won't let me come into the country, because my lead foot violates their RoHS directives. And that's okay. Europe has lots of fantastic automobiles: the 1988 Fiat Panda 4x4, the 1993 Renault Twingo, and pretend I mentioned something German here. All of them have delightful, teeny-tiny engines, and are a joy to drive in a crowded city. None of them are easy to import.
Japanese folks are all too willing to dump a Skyline or a Crown on a cargo ship for you. We've got too many amazing high-performance automobiles, just like fields full of them, and Big Otochan Government says that we have to keep them in pristine condition, or no registration. So why don't you have a couple of them? Clear out the back forty behind my mechanic's shop. Europeans, though, make it very difficult to import their cars. It isn't a full-service auction-to-driveway curbstoning operation.
All this is to say: I can't enter European countries. I can't ask them to send me a car (I barely speak The Queen's English,) and also they will probably expect payment of some kind. Getting a beautiful, 80s-wedge-humping-a-space-shuttle Citroen BX in my driveway is going to be a challenge.
Luckily for me, there are a lot of cargo ships that have failed to deliver their cargo in time. Hurricanes. Typhoons. Really ugly storms. Captain farts on the GPS and breaks it. The bottom of the ocean is full of little tiny Italian shitboxes, and all I have to do is commission a submarine research project to go pick them up. Billionaires love a submarine research project, and standards for the industry have slipped in recent months such that you're no longer expected that they survive the mission. Best part is? Maritime salvage law means those suckers are free.
Now, I know what you're saying: doesn't salt water violently corrode every part of the car, rendering it nearly unusable after mere days immersed? And you'd be right, but I also live in a province that salts the roads in winter. The only difference between the car I'm actively driving and a chunk of rusty Frenchmobile that I pulled off the ocean floor using a robot is that the latter one is more predictable. See you next spring, in something with twelve-inch that will be half Bondo, but with an air of the exotic about it.

Thunderbird Necklace
"For hundreds of years craftspeople at Santo Domingo Pueblo (now known by its traditional name, Kewa) were known for exquisite shell, turquoise, and jet jewelry that they made and traded throughout the Southwest. But by the 1920s these traditional materials were scarce. Motivated by circumstance, jewelers at Santo Domingo discovered an exciting new medium: abandoned automobile battery casings.
Manufactured from hard rubber, discarded car batteries made an admirable substitute for traditional jet, and with Route 66 bringing throngs of motorists into the West, they were abundant. Batteries were soon augmented with broken phonograph records and bright colored celluloid from combs and other household goods. By the 1930s Santo Domingo had developed a unique style of folk-art jewelry, made entirely of repurposed and found materials: sun-bleached animal bone, local gypsum, tiny chips of turquoise, and modern plastics.
Gathered in rangelands, trash dumps, salvage yards, and dime stores, these unlikely items formed the basis of a new economic enterprise for the pueblo. Whole families took part in the manufacture of whimsical, colorful necklaces whose signature motif was a Thunderbird with outstretched wings. Santa Fe’s art community dismissed these creations as “tourist junk,” but tourists couldn’t get enough. At roadside stands, on railroad platforms, and in curio shops, Thunderbird necklaces sold by the thousands.

2024-12-12: Ohio (Hex 12)
Great fields of corn are wedged between stands of buckeye trees growing near the numerous streams and rivers, though the waters often smell of industrial chemical runoff. The way to the northeast is prone to delays.
Notable Feature: Black Star Salvage Yard (Resource)
A vast expanse of old and partially-destroyed vehicles stretches out across one side of the highway. For a small fee and a few hours of searching, any component that would reasonably found in heavy machinery, commercial trucks, or consumer automobiles can be located here. Black Star Salvage Yard is a reputable business that is able to offer such cheap prices and broad inventory because the company is able to tow all the vehicles that get stranded on The Routes. The profits from the salvage are invested in Black Liberation movements (which will eventually include the Black Panther Party in the winter of 1966). After paying the entry fee to the salvage yard, each paying customer can select from several salvage options:
A single perfectly functional part that looks brand new
Two mostly-functional parts (they don’t have to be the same part) that have a 50% chance of malfunctioning when used
Four parts (they don’t have to be the same part) that are probably broken, but have a 25% chance of working if installed
Six parts (don’t have to be the same) that are definitely broken but can be relatively easily repaired with the right tools
Mix and match from options 2-4, taking half of the indicated parts from each of any two of those options
It takes 4 hours to search for the needed parts, but they will always be found. Helping can halve the time it takes to find the requested part(s), but the person who is helping doesn’t get to request select from the above salvage options.
Service Station (Black Star Fuel and Towing Company)
Located next door to the Black Star Salvage Yard is a service station owned by the same company. It’s a sturdy building with walls made of painted cinderblock, prioritizing functionality and protection over aesthetics, which is an unfortunate necessity after several racially-motivated arson attempts on the property. The store proudly serves people of any color, creed, or national origin, though making bigoted remarks and acting a fool will result in the offender being forcibly removed from the establishment. LeDarius Huffman runs the service station and freely hands out business cards for their towing services in case of problems along The Routes. He also tries to upsell customers on a more expensive rescue service (paid in advance, of course!).
The tow truck drivers will provide vehicle assistance and towing at any point along The Routes, though the service is neither cheap nor without risk outside of Ohio. Black Star employs 10 tow truck drivers who work in teams of two. At any given time, three teams are patrolling The Routes for abandoned vehicles to salvage, one team is on call local vehicle trouble, while the final team rests. Each tow team is far more familiar with The Routes than the average driver and knows how to reliably cross dangerous shortcuts that are either unknown to most travelers or are too risky. The teams travel with firearms to deal with the horrors lurking in the shadows of The Routes, extra fuel to traverse long stretches without service stations, and food to last for up to four days.
If the party has paid for the rescue service and needs help outside of Ohio or its adjacent hexes, a tow team can arrive at the party’s location in four hours. From there, the tow team can traverse a hexes at a rate of 1 hour per hex, regardless of terrain or if a segment is prone to delays. Inside Ohio or its adjacent hexes, the tow team can arrive within an hour and return to the service station in an hour. If a person lacks the money to pay for towing, Ledarius or the tow team drivers will accept payment in the form of political action. Payments of this kind inevitably involve putting oneself into a life threatening situation.

DIY Etched Map Serving Tray
Project by Ashley Ann:
Summer brings out the travel bug in me. I start dreaming of the beautiful places I’ve been and the locations I still hope to visit. My initial idea for this project was to create a roadmap of one of my favorite travel destinations. I thought a subtle tray celebrating a place I love would be a fun daily reminder of my dreamy locale. However, the more I thought about it, the more I knew my favorite place did not require a plane, train or automobile. It sounds cliche, but my home is my favorite place.
So, instead of a roadmap of an exotic destination, my tray bears the grid of where I spend all my days. The combination of a salvaged window and modern road grid appealed to me, but you could create the same project in countless ways. Etched glass is very subtle, only really noticeable if you look at it from a certain angle. So it is perfect for an unexpected design. —Ashley
Materials
window pane
Armour Etch
utility knife
clear contact paper
paintbrush
roadmap
2 decorative knobs (mine are from Anthropologie)
Instructions
1. Print a roadmap of your desired location based on the size of your frame. I chose my location and used an online search to find a roadmap. After measuring my window, I enlarged my map using Photoshop. If you do not have Photoshop, you can take your small map to a local copy center for a basic enlargement. Do not worry if the map is blurry; you only need to see where the roads are located. Tape your map to the underside of your window.
2. Apply clear contact paper to the top of the frame. My window was wider than the contact paper, so I need to use two sheets of contact paper. Instead of trying to make the two sheets of contact paper line up perfectly, I used a main road down the middle of the frame as a space between the two sheets.
3. Using your utility knife and a ruler, cut out each road by tracing the map on the underside of the window. Remove the cut out sections.
4. Using your paintbrush, apply a thick coat of Armour Etch over the exposed glass areas. Let dry for a minimum of 5 minutes, and then wash thoroughly. You can now remove all the extra contact paper and clean the window again.
5. Attach your drawer handles by drilling two holes into the window frame at the desired locations. I wanted a feminine feel to contrast the geometric design of the grid, so I chose floral drawer pulls. You could give the tray an entirely different feel based on the type of handles you choose.
6. Once your tray is complete, you can display it on a table as a subtle reminder of your favorite place. I think this would also work well hanging on a wall without the drawer pulls or propped on a mantle. You could also create a very modern piece by using a basic sheet of glass and new frame with clean lines. There are so many creative options for taking this basic idea of etching a roadmap onto glass. Have fun creating!

A Comprehensive Guide to Buying Used Engines and Transmissions: What You Need to Know
If you are an automobile enthusiast, a mechanic, or someone trying to save money on an auto repair, buying used engines and transmissions is the way to go. Whether restoring a vintage car, fixing a vehicle with a blown engine, or replacing a worn-out transmission, purchasing used parts can save you both time and money. In this blog, we'll dive into the benefits, considerations, and tips for buying used engines and used transmissions.
Why Buy Used Engines and Transmissions? Before we get into the meat of it, though, it's worth knowing why buying used engines and used transmissions is an option worth considering. There are a lot of good reasons to buy used instead of brand-new, including:
Cost-cutting: It is one of the most important motivations for their use; used engines and transmissions are a cost-effective option since fresh ones often run in thousands of dollars, but used ones can be bought at a few hundred dollars.
Availability: In some cases, new versions of a particular engine or transmission model may be hard to come by. If you are restoring a classic car or need an out-of-production part, the used market is often the best (and sometimes the only) option.
Sustainability: Used auto parts purchase helps reduce waste and promotes the recycling of components that still have life left in them. This can have a positive environmental impact, especially as fewer parts end up in landfills.
Quick Fix: If your car is down and you need a quick fix, a used engine or transmission may be just the ticket. New parts can take longer to ship in, while used parts may be locally available or from salvage yards.
Where to Find Used Engines and Transmissions There are many sites where you will find used engines and used transmissions. Each has different advantages and drawbacks, so find out what exactly you need from them.
Salvage Yards: Some of the best places to get used engines and transmissions are auto salvage yards or junkyards. Salvage yards purchase vehicles that are written off by insurance companies or owners who don't need them anymore. In some yards, you might get a low-mileage engine or transmission at a reasonable price depending on their inventory.
Online Marketplaces: There is eBay, Craigslist, and online specialized websites from where people can buy used engines and used transmissions. These are really convenient, often you can get filters by exact make, model, and even year to search for the part required. However, buying from a marketplace can also be tricky to ascertain the actuality and genuineness and condition of that part.
Auto Parts Dealers: Some auto parts dealers specialize in used or refurbished parts, including used engines and used transmissions. Such companies may provide warranties, which would give assurance to the customer while purchasing used parts.
Mechanics and Auto Shops: A few mechanics and auto repair shops might sell some of their engines and transmissions since they've probably replaced one for a customer's vehicle, and the old one is still good enough.
Things to Watch Out For in Buying Used Engines or Transmissions Before you buy used engines or used transaxles, here are things to check.
Mileage is one of the major factors involved in determining its lifespan. It is known that lower-mileage engines and transmissions will be in much better condition. However, avoid low odometer readings as just a determining factor; a high-mileage well-maintained engine might just be a good choice over the poorly maintained, low-mileage one.
Condition and Warranty: Inspect the condition of the engine or transmission before purchasing. Check for any signs of wear and tear such as rust, oil leaks, or anything obvious. A warranty will sometimes be provided by sellers to cover the additional costs.
Compatibility: Ensure that the used engine or transmission you’re buying is compatible with your vehicle. This includes verifying the make, model, year, and engine/transmission type. Using an incorrect part could lead to expensive and time-consuming modifications.
Inspection: If possible, have the part inspected by a professional mechanic. A mechanic can provide a thorough evaluation of the engine or transmission’s condition and flag any potential issues that might not be immediately apparent.
Seller Reputation: Be it from a local salvage yard, online marketplace, or a dealership, one must always look for the reputation of the seller. One must see reviews or testimonials from other customers that will give them assurance of getting quality parts and excellent customer service.
Price Comparison: Prices for used engines and transmissions can vary widely depending on the part’s condition, mileage, and rarity. Before making a purchase, compare prices from different sellers to ensure you’re getting a fair deal.
Shipping and Delivery: If you’re buying used parts online, consider the shipping costs and delivery time. Shipping can sometimes be expensive, especially for large items like engines and transmissions, and you’ll want to make sure the part arrives on time and in good condition.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Buying Used Parts There is a plus side and minus side to buying second-hand engines, transmissions, or the like. As with any acquisition, there's no such thing as a free lunch. Here's a summary of the most critical advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages Cost: Used parts could be one or two percent or less of a new part that you could replace it with for repairs or restore a vehicle project. Eco-Friendly: You reduce wastage by having older components second-hand. Quick Availability: Used parts are usually easy to find and can be found quickly, thus making the repairs faster and more efficient. Quality: Some used engines and transmissions are in excellent condition and offer the same performance as new parts. Disadvantages No Warranty (in many cases): Most used parts, particularly those bought from salvage yards or private sellers, will not come with a warranty. No warranty means the owner will have to incur all expenses when the part fails. Unknown History: You can never really know the history of a used engine or transmission. A part may look fine, but later down the line, you'll discover some problems that existed and are now more visible. Likelihood of a Shorter Life Span: Even though used parts are in great condition, they will not be as long-lasting as brand-new ones. You'll probably have to replace a used part before you do with a new one. Compatibility Issues: There’s a risk of buying a used engine or transmission that doesn’t perfectly match your vehicle’s specifications, leading to potential fitment issues.
Tips for a Successful Purchase To maximize your chances of getting a quality used engine or used transmission, consider the following tips:
Ask for a test drive: It is always prudent to take out the vehicle, which the engine or transmission is derived from, to test the car. This is to get the performance of the part before taking it.
Maintenance records: Seek the maintenance record of the vehicle if possible from the seller. This gives a clue about the care given to the part.
Check for Recalls: Some engines or transmissions may have been subject to manufacturer recalls. Ensure the part you’re buying hasn’t been affected by a recall.
Be Patient: Finding the right used engine or used transmission might take time. Don’t rush the process, as a hasty decision could lead to buyer’s remorse.
Conclusion Buying used engines and used transmissions is a great way to save money on car repairs, especially if you are looking at older vehicles or unique projects. With some research, good inspection of the parts, and dealing with reputable sellers, you can get a high-quality part that fits your needs. Just be aware of the potential risks and be cautious when buying. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or simply trying to keep your vehicle running smoothly, buying used parts can be a smart and cost-effective solution.

So finally, after a 3-year run, Marvel What If has come to a close. And even though a lot of people didn't like it, I enjoyed it for what it was (Because apparently me and the majority can never agree on anything JESUS CHRIST-)
But if you've been around my page long enough, you know the drill: here's my brief thoughts on every episode of the season.
8: What If... The Watcher Disappeared? [This one just felt a bit slow, to be honest. They were definitely trying to set up for their big finale (Obviously) but just took probably a bit too much time in it. Though I did like how Infinity Ultron got a pseudo-character arc though. As well as more material for a potential Death Battle with Heaven Ascension DIO
7: What If... Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers? [Y'know, I thought a mecha and Kaiju episode would be more entertaining, but I don't seem to remember the mechs doing all that much. Sam and Bruce's new friendship was nice, but I don't know... if you show Kaiju's and giant robots, we want to see them fight! Did that one line of Godzilla 2014 tell you nothing?
6: What If... What If? [The idea of ending the series on the Watcher facing his actions of intervening felt surprisingly fitting since he's the one character who's been in every single episode. I also liked the ending bit with the Eminence learning about seeing and not observing. Though aside from that... not much else.
5: What If... the Emergence Destroyed Earth? [Holy shit, Cy Yu's in this?! This episode was somewhat similar to the Zombie episode in some regards, what with the world being in ruin and only a few surviving heroes remaining. But what this one does in comparison to the other is leaning even harder into the loss of comrades and the dwindling hope of salvaging a better tomorrow, something that I'm sure characters like Trunks and Silver have to deal with on the reg. And seeing the Watcher coming to grips with this world's futility and intervening to help save it did feel a bit gripping. But seriously, Cy Yu in a Marvel show? For real?
4: What If... 1872? [If any of you couldn't tell, some of my favorites often wound up being the ones heavily based off other comics with different themes. First Marvel Zombies, then 1602, and now 1872 ain't too far off from the top. I just like the different atmosphere's the episodes produce, and this one is dripping in wild western flair. Even if having martial arts be a big focus in a cowboy setting is a bit odd.
3: What If... Howard the Duck Got Hitched [Look... I know a lot of people hate the goofy episodes, bit I kind of liked this one just for how bananas everyone went in order to get that egg, not even mentioning the bizarre suddenness of their Raiders-style deaths at the egg's hand. And even as weird as Darcy and Howard's ship relationship is, with the way they talk to each other, I can actually buy them as a decent couple.
2: What If... the Red Guardian Stopped the Winter Soldier? [Wasn't really expecting this one to be one I really liked, but I was thoroughly surprised. It had kind of a Planes, Trains, & Automobiles vibe to it (Or I guess you could go with a Deadpool & Wolverine vibe), and I really liked how the relationship with Bucky and the Red Guardian played out. Even in the end when they went down, they went down together. It's just neat, I tell ya.
1: What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood? [Remember what I said about the different tones of episodes like 1872? This kind of applies here. I like how much they leaned into the 40's/50's Hollywood style, with that dance-off number in the middle being pretty sick. (Take THAT, dance-off to save the universe!) And even though I haven't watched The Eternals, the way Arishem was portrayed (and bitched out by Agatha) was kinda neat as well.
But with that, What if is done. I said this at the top but I still enjoyed this series, even if it wasn't what most others wanted out of it. It even got me into thinking about what ifs for other series, like Dragon Ball and Sonic (I've got some good ones cooking up for the latter, lemme tell ya). But even if the series is over right now, maybe it'll get picked back up to tell more stories later. After all... time, space, reality... it's more than a linear path.
And to all those who bitch about the goofy-toned episodes, in the words of many Foghorn Leghorn cartoons...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH SHADDAP!!!
