Manicomio

Visual effects and compositing has been an extremely interesting module, the appeal of being able to learn an extremely new piece of software was one of the most interesting parts of this module. The premise of this module being hell from the third years was very overwhelming but I went in head first and took it on and I loved it. I feel that the software is very simple and easy to pick up if you understand what the nodes mean.
In terms of the idea and the concept of the module, I feel that the brief 2100 has been such a cool idea and very interesting. I enjoyed the idea of creating my own future in the eyes that I wanted and I feel that the idea I came up with was original because of the added element of the dictator Alex Hunt. I wanted to add stuff which I had seen in the world already and I matched this with the ideas which I had already implemented, I got a lot of inspiration from Hunger Games and The Divergent Series. Splitting the people of the world into different segments was what I wanted to achieve, I got a map and split the earth into different factions and then that's how I decided to split them up. I thought this was a very cool concept and worked with the dictator idea. I also decided to add an element of brainwashing through dictator Alex Hunt going crazy from being in power too long and letting it go to his head so he wanted to stop people going against him so he did this by brainwashing them and anyone who resisted them are sent to the waters and not allowed to live out their days on land anymore.
One of my favourite parts of this module is creating the technology for the world, so I decided to create a Drone, a Hydrator and S.A.M Self-Supporting Advanced Mainframe. The Drone system was created to protect the borders of the factions, it patrols up the fences and scans every second of the day while also holding a 360-degree camera which is being watched 24 hours a day. If anyone tries to cross the borders then they are picked up by the drones and dropped in the waters of the factionless. I loved creating this piece of technology as I enjoyed the process of compositing the 3D aspects in with the matte paintings and all the elements that I created such as the fences.
I then created SAM, this branched from the idea of the houses which I created. I wanted something to control them so I came up with the idea of creating an artificial intelligence which runs all the houses in the world, and this was SAM. I am extremely happy with his design; I used After Effects and Photoshop to achieve this design and I love how it looks, I added a sound wave to this and changed the effects so that it matches to the sound that I attach to it. This is the effect that I desired and I am so happy with how it looks.
After I created the House I got some feedback from my lecturer and we were speaking about appliances in the house and I then came up with the idea to have food in packets which are then rehydrated into food in front of your very eyes. I loved this concept and enjoyed the whole process of animating it was so interesting to create this piece and I loved the way the packet turns into actual food.
I modelled a beautiful city as I wanted to have these big beautiful modern cities which is where the world is run from, I decided that there would be three cities which each did different things for the world. Unity which is the main Headquarters for the world, Salutem which looks after Citizen welfare and Muneris which is Citizen Enforcement. I loved creating this whole concept of the city and it was so cool being able to create all these towers and texture them, the beautiful design is something which I really wanted to achieve and I feel I did this through the whites and blues that I have used. I got a lot of reference from Stargate Atlantis and I’ve watched this for quite a few years and enjoyed the overall futuristic look of the program thanks to all the alien technology.
I decided to litter the world with houses which are given to the each and every citizen a place to live if they follow the rules, I began by designing them and I decided to create sphere houses for this and I liked the shape of the sphere and thought that it was very futuristic shape and decided to model it and all it’s interior which I was extremely happy with, getting to model all these things was really cool and really heightened my modelling and texturing skills. This shot took a very long time thanks to the 1800 frame length, I had to render this out on multiple computers to be able to achieve the final amount, it was really annoying as I just wanted to get the shot finished but I just had to wait which was extremely annoying. It took me a while to add all the effects and composite them on, the city background was one of the hardest thanks to its movement being all over the place in Nuke so I decided to add the picture in Maya and render that out in Mental Ray so that the camera moves with picture easily, I added this into the Nuke file and it worked extremely well and fit perfectly in the background which I was so happy about.
The final shot was my drone scene which I thought looked really cool and looked very realistic, I rendered the drone shot out of Maya and put a background of a mountain countryside in and this made it look so realistic, I colour corrected it so that the drones looked overcast like the background image and it worked really well behind the fence. I created this hologram fence in after effects and imported it into Nuke and adjusted the transform and corner pin settings so that it fit between the poles and was in the right perspective. This was a really cool scene to create and I was extremely happy with the final outcome of this scene and it looked really cool. I then decided to use it again in another scene, but this time I used a matte painting which I created and put it in the background, I did think it looked really cool but didn’t think it looked the best which it could.
A royalty free soundtrack I found on youtube known as Nightwalker by an artist called Sentient Pulse. I liked this soundtrack thanks to the very chilled vibe of the song but also the electronic aspect of the song works in harmony with what I want. I found that this had a strong aspect of perfection thanks to the chilled aspect of the song, it also gives off a strong aspect of coldness thanks to the slow pace of the song. I applied this to the piece with the talking over the top, I lowered the loudness of the soundtrack and it sounded very nice underneath the speech that I have placed into the final piece. The addition of the robotic voice with the soundtrack really made it cold and this wasn’t the style I wanted until I heard it because I felt that this world is extremely cold thanks to the dictatorship which the world holds.
Some problems I encountered was when it came to Nuke and working with tracking, I didn't have tracking markers in my scenes so when it came to applying the little bits of animation I wanted in the house shot I found it really hard to make it look like it was there thanks to it jumping about. I feel that I have been able to achieve it to a very good standard and looks quite realistic in place and I did this my turning down the opacity until it was needed which is where it didn't look so jumpy.
Another problem I had was trying to apply the background in the house shot because of the camera tracking forward, I found out this was a problem when I added into Nuke and found that the movement looked extremely weird. I got around this by adding the picture into Maya behind the house and then rendering that out separately without the house in the scene, I finally put it behind the house in Nuke and I was extremely happy with how the pair merged up and I felt that they worked in harmony.
If I were to do this task again or had more time I would have looked into doing more art for the drone technology infographic, by showing a little human being picked up, at the time that I was creating the shot I didn't feel it needed it because I was just showing the technology but now I feel that it does because the way the blue drops down is just a bit lacking of what I am trying to show.
I would also go a bit more in-depth into the design of the camera and how it works because in the infographic it kinda just tells you its the camera but there is no actual design so I would have gone a bit more in-depth. I have added a little section of how it works in my document but have decided that it would look better if I had added a small element of animation detailing how the camera works.
To conclude I feel that this module has been an extremely strong and enjoyable module to go through, the new aspects of software and art which I have been able to learn and create has allowed me to create something I am extremely happy with. My favourite being the shots thanks to the time and effort I put into it, my favourite being the house because I took a lot of time to do the modelling, texturing and rendering. These things became a small annoyance over time but now I that I look back over all the annoying aspects that I encountered I can say that I am extremely happy with the final outcome.

Lennon was born in a poor part of IMPERium ruled Washington D.C. As the poor populations of the cities are often largely ignored, her parents were able to join the rebellion and fly under the radar while still in the midst of android central. They reported all of their intel to the rebels working both in the city and for IMPERium. It was a dangerous way to live, but her parents felt like they needed to make their daughter’s future a bright one. Lennon’s parents were low-level developers for IMPERium, who mainly worked in the local android maintenance shops, where people would bring their family androids for repairs and updates. Lennon spent every afternoon and all school breaks in the shop and she soon grew to have an interest in android development and engineering.
However, school was difficult for Lennon. Because of her parents’ careers, she was able to attend a private school in a wealthier part of the city. However, her parents could not afford much, so she went to school in hand-me-downs and thrift store clothing. The other children teased Lennon relentlessly, which caused her to close down and only interact if she absolutely had to. The loneliness was debilitating and she was often very sad. She focused on her school work and excelled in all of her academics, even surprising her teachers with how incredibly brilliant she was. By the time she was in seventh grade, she had completed all of the classes the school had to offer. Her math teacher nominated her to skip a grade the following year. With her parent’s permission, she accepted and started high school a year early and at a 10th-grade level.
Lennon continued to excel in high school and her calculus teacher invited her to join the school’s programming team. The programming team was sponsored by IMPERium, in hopes of cultivating the best and brightest minds and recruiting them to further the company’s mission. During her senior year, the programming teams at all of the high schools around the world competed to see which school could solve a programming issue that IMPERium presented to the students. The students then presented their patch to IMPERium’s Princeps. Each member of the winning team received a scholarship prize and the team member that showed the most promise and most skill would be offered a job in the programming department at IMPERium’s corporate office. Upon informing her parents of this, they immediately shut down. They were afraid that their daughter was slowly becoming one of IMPERium’s pawns. Lennon couldn’t comprehend why her parents could think in such a way. Her parents were very much still involved in the rebellion, but they were also employed by the company. She simply couldn’t understand why her parents couldn’t understand that she could be doing the exact same thing. The truth was, being a spy at the corporate level was next to impossible. Corporate employees went through rigorous mental evaluations, some of which caused the person substantial damage. The house was very quiet and her parents rarely talked with Lennon from that point on.
Lennon poured herself into the project. IMPERium provided each student with hundreds of lines of code to evaluate. To most, the code would have looked like a jumbled mess. The disorganization would be enough to trip up any run of the mill programmer, but Lennon wasn’t just any programmer. She lived for a challenge. However, as soon as she unjumbled the code she realized the code was of rebel origins. It was a chunk of code that could be used to hijack an android and control it. She knew if she did not complete the assignment, she and her family could be labeled as traitors and executed immediately. However, she felt like coding a patch for this hack could be seen as a betrayal by her parents. She decided that while she may no longer be welcomed by her parents, they would still be alive if she created the patch, so she did. When it came to presentation day, Lennon shook with anxiety. Often times her brain moved faster than her mouth and that would often leave her tongue tied. However, she got through the presentation without too much of a hitch. Waiting for the rest of the schools to present was excruciating. At the end of the presentation, Princeps Ares presented her high school with the winning team prize. She then announced Lennon as the winner of the contest.
Lennon became the youngest programmer ever at IMPERium. On her first day of work, she was kicked out of the family home. She spent a week undergoing IMPERium’s mental evaluations, but she passed. Lennon worked for the company for years and created many of the programs that currently run all types of androids. In fact, she also created the anti-hacking firewall that is installed on all of the androids around the world. At her fifth-year anniversary party, the Princeps gathered to give her a gift. They flipped on the large screen and Lennon saw her parents on a platform. The gift was the company executing her parents for treason. Lennon held herself together when she just wanted to fall apart. From that day forward, she knew that her mission was to destroy IMPERium from the inside. She began reaching out to her parents' contacts, with disappointing results at first. However, upon searching every hiding space in their former home, she found a chip in the attic. When she reviewed the materials, she saw mention of a place called Salutem, with the names Edilyn Moreau, Ben Weiss, and Sanders McCoy. Lennon searched everywhere for these people and was finally able to get in contact with them. They met at a small restaurant in her childhood neighborhood. She was amazed that the three rebels were able to enter the city without being detected. They administered their test and she was immediately told to pack only her essential belongings. Sanders accompanied her to her small apartment downtown and stood guard while Lennon said goodbye to everything she knew. From that day forward, she was a rebel and took over as head of rebel technology at Salutem.
T H E P R E S E N T: 3 years later...
Lennon was the first person that was able to successfully hack into an android and turn its allegiance to the rebellion, which meant hacking her own firewall. As an unexpected result of the hack, the androids she worked with began to exhibit human-like emotions. The first android she was able to hack into was a scanner named 3S, whom she worked with at IMPERium headquarters. Even when she was working at headquarters, 3S was the only android she could actually stand being around and she couldn’t stand the fact that she had abandoned him when she left the city. A year after her exodus, Lennon convinced the leaders and Elijah to take her into the city to bring 3S back to the compound.
After his hack, the two developed an uncanny friendship. They were more like sister and brother, and sometimes Lennon even felt very motherly toward the very curious and innocent android. Lennon was the only one at the compound that actually treated 3S like a person, without any trepidation. In fact, he picked his ‘human name’ based on the little Velociraptor Lennon has sitting on her desk.
Lennon is currently working on recreating the android database for use by the rebels, but it’s proving difficult, even for her. Can she crack the database codes in time? After all, Salutem and the whole rebel alliance is depending on her skills, or they could all die.
