FMA Live Action Review
In which I suffer for the fourth time
..
...
.........
Why do I do this to myself
The Fullmetal Alchemist live action movie is out on Netflix! And boy it was quite the ride.
The story: Obviously, when adapting a 27 volume manga into one movie, things are going to be cut. I’ve been wondering how they were going to make a single movie fit everything that took an anime 64 episodes to do, but as it turns out, it only roughly covered the first 4 volumes (or first 10 ep). And when I say roughly, I mean roughly. The movie covers the events in Lior and the Shou Tucker incident while mixing in the meeting with Dr. Marcoh, Hughes’ death, and elements from the Lab 5 arc, Mustang’s showdown with Lust, and the mannequin soldiers. There’s a possibility of a sequel to pick up where the first movie left off.
Overall, the story wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t amazing either but it still captured the feeling and complexity of fma that I think the first anime failed to do. This isn’t a stand alone film though. Too much was left out for it to have a proper conclusion. I know most of the people watching this movie are already fans of the franchise, but let’s be real, someone who just happens to pick this up would be awfully confused about things like who the villains are and what their motive is.
I’m also a little salty that they left out Major Armstrong and Scar so I hope they add them in the potential sequel.
Character portrayal: This is specifically how the script portrayed the characters we know and love, I’ll be talking about the acting separately! For the most part, the characters were written on point. I would have liked more smol and angry Ed, but he still had his spunk all the same. Since Elicia hasn’t been born yet in this story, we don’t get Proud Father Hughes™ but he’s still the father figure for our parent-less children. Winry is still feisty and the emotional support for the brothers. Riza is still the quiet and bamf we love. And Mustang is still hot. The only main difference is Hakuro who was this guy even is promoted into the main cast as well as now being a General, portrayed with the characteristics of Grumman and his 2003 anime self. The Homunculi were pretty much the same so no complaints there!
My major concerns were Mustang’s role in the story and Al’s underdeveloped character. In the movie, Mustang is very skeptical about the Elric brothers’ quest for the philosopher’s stone, even telling them to stop because it doesn’t exist. Tbh I don’t really know how to feel about that, bc I really love my Supportive Mustang™ thank you very much. We also don’t get the same grief and obsession he has concerning Hughes’ murder and the perpetrator, although he does attack Envy and Lust with the same ferocity. My problem with Al stems from the fact that he doesn’t get much screen time I think. I know that this is the “Fullmetal Alchemist” but Al is just as important and the back bone to being that title, so it upsets me that they didn’t do justice to his character. You can’t just stick in his doubt about being real and call it good. Where’s my incredibly smart, super strong, and enticingly sweet boy?
And why wasn’t that giant stone head a replica of Ed’s face? Honestly that was the most out of character thing they could’ve done in the movie :P
The acting: The only redeeming factor for this movie tbh, alongside the costumes and effects. Can we give a round applause for Ryosuke as Ed? Ed is probably the hardest character of the cast to act out and he did an amazing job. He was the highlight of the movie. He captured every spiteful look, cocky phrase, fearful expression, tearful eyes, and sunshine smile perfectly. Ryosuke and Tsubasa (Winry) had such good chemistry too! All their interactions, from banter to heartfelt conversation, made me smile. Mustang and Riza had perfect ust were incredible, Hughes stole my heart (and broke it for the umpteenth time), and Lust and Gluttony were on point. Envy’s actor seemed a little... off. He rubbed off as more creepy rather than cheeky. And shout out to the little actress who played Nina! She was so adorable I screamed at the screen bc how dare.
Costumes and effects: Boi these were good. Everything was exactly how the manga and anime depict it. The scenery and clothing of all the Lior/Reole and East City locals made me feel like I was in a fantasy Europe. The church area that Cornello was trying to get into even reminded me of the Duomo in Florence, and turns out that part of the movie was filmed in Italy. Figures haha. And the alchemy? Awesome. Al’s animated armor? Spectacular. The Homunculi attacks? Fantastic. Although the part where Gluttony runs around with his real mouth open was comically fake-looking. I also wonder how Mustang was able to sustain a rope-like flame while he was attacking Envy? Does his alchemy even work that way? And I was not ready for cgi chimeras and mannequin soldiers holy fuck. My one problem in all this was Ed’s wig. By god that thing was a hot mess, especially comparing it to manga/anime Ed’s luxious hair lol.
I’m not going to say much about the score because I honestly don’t remember any of it besides the folksy Celtic music that played when Cornello was attacking Ed and the score when Mustang is consoling(?) Ed and Al after the Tucker incident. Actually let me talk about that because it was really well composed. After Ed tells Mustang that they’re only human and that they couldn’t save even a little girl, the music pauses, then comes in slowly, fades out, and repeats. This somehow timed perfectly with my sighs and breathing bc omg that scene and really added to the intensity of emotions that both I and the characters were feeling at that moment.
That’s it for my review! Thanks for making through it till the end! For my final thoughts, I’d recommend watching it just to see the world of fma in live action. While it fell flat plot-wise, the characters were the ones that really made the movie!
Hopefully there will be a sequel so I can see more of this stupid face:

From Cardi B To Kylie, These Are The Dumbest Phrases Celebs Trademarked Betches
Over the last two years, Cardi B has truly transformed from a random person on Love & Hip-Hop to one of the biggest stars in the world. This week, it was announced that she’ll be making her film debut, but that’s not the only business move she has in the works. I have a feeling some new merch is coming in the near future, because Cardi B has officially trademarked “Okurr.” She’s making money moves.
The official trademark designation is for “Clothing, namely, T-shirts, sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts, pants, shorts, jackets, footwear, headgear, namely, hats and caps, blouses, bodysuits, dresses, jumpsuits, leggings, skirts, sweaters, undergarments,” so we can definitely expect Cardi B to drop an OKURR clothing line any day now. This is very on brand for Cardi, and I’m sure she’ll sell millions of whatever she decides to make. I’m only a little salty about this, because she definitely wasn’t the first one to start saying this (I’m looking at you, drag queens).
Okurr is far from the craziest thing that a celebrity has trademarked, and at least Cardi B isn’t claiming ownership of a real, everyday word. Here are some of the most hilarious celebrity trademarks:
Taylor Swift
I won’t dive into my personal feelings about Taylor Swift today, but she has a long history of trademarking her lyrics. Some of these are pretty specific, like “Look What You Made Me Do” or “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now.” But Taylor has also gone after some trademarks that are honestly so questionable. In the past, she’s tried to trademark her album titles “Fearless” and “1989,” and I don’t get it. Fearless is a word. Like, it was fearless of me to push through my crippling hangover and make it to brunch last weekend. And 1989 IS A F*CKING YEAR. Taylor can have “this sick beat,” I don’t really care, but 1989 is too far.

Kylie Jenner
Out of all the dumb celebrity trademark drama, Kylie Jenner’s might be my favorite. Back in 2015, Kylie filed a trademark request to use “KYLIE” for “advertising and endorsement services.” Does Kylie really think she’s the only person in the world named Kylie? This turned into a major issue in early 2016, when legendary pop star Kylie Minogue filed her opposition. Behold, the most passive-aggressive tweet of all time:
Hello….. My name is KYLIE #lightyears
— Kylie Minogue (@kylieminogue) February 28, 2016
This case went back and forth for almost a full year, until Kylie Minogue withdrew her opposition. About a month later, the trademark office rejected Kylie Jenner’s claim. So sad! More recently, Kylie tried to trademark “Kylie Skin,” leading to speculation that she’s planning to launch a skin care branch of her cosmetics line. No news about this yet, but this is probably how Kylie will make her second billion dollars.
Beyoncé
Unsurprisingly, Beyoncé has lots of trademarks, and most of them are pretty n0rmal. There’s “Beyoncé,” “Beyhive,” and a few different fragrance names. The most intriguing thing is that Beyoncé has trademarked the names of all three of her children. The trademarks apply to basically ever kind of product imaginable, but it doesn’t actually seem like Bey has any plans to use them. More likely, she just wants to prevent other people from profiting off of her kids. Lol, this is such a famous person problem to have.
Katy Perry
After performing at the Super Bowl in 2015, Katy Perry moved to capitalize on a viral moment, and tried to trademark “left shark,” “right shark,” “drunk shark,” and “basking shark.” Wow, imagine a time when we cared this much about a dancing shark at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Katy’s trademark filings were initially denied, but eventually she appealed and got approved for them. Katy also has various spellings of “Katycat” trademarked, because apparently people are really dying to pretend to be Katy Perry fans these days.

Kim Kardashian
actually blown away that the name of Kim Kardashian’s company is Kimsaprincess inc – she's out here conning us all with her fast fashion partners in crime with a 2003 Myspace namehttps://t.co/CK7rjVO0XW pic.twitter.com/kdAUazUweF
— Anna Cafolla (@AnnaCafolla) February 21, 2019
Kim Kardashian’s trademarks are really nothing out of the ordinary–mostly just variations of her name and initials. What’s more important is the company behind her trademark applications. All of these celebrities have like, fake companies that they use to apply for trademarks, and Kim’s is called KIMSAPRINCESS, INC. You guys, I am dying right now. For reference, Khloe’s is KHLOMONEY, INC., and Kourtney’s is called 2DIE4KOURT. I love this so much, you don’t even know. I feel like this is actual confirmation of what all the Kardashians’ AIM screen names were back in the day. I’ve never related to the Kardashians more.
If you just can’t wait to get your hands on an “okurr” shirt, you’re in luck, because Shop Betches has “I Said Okurrrr” and “She Said Okurrrr” tanks available… for now.

If a movie wants to be more than 2 hours long it automatically has to PROVE that it's warranted and worth the audience's time if that makes sense. Letting it be that long just because the director feels like it is some bullshit. That's why we have separate director's editions
RIGHT, LIKE:  not to be obvious but M:I - Fallout is 2 and a half hours long and every minute of screen time is not wasted. It absolutely feels justified to be over two hours.  There are movies where being over two hours is warranted. Sometimes a story takes a lot of time to tell, and whether you’re engaged with the story or not affects how long it feels.  Like Spectre, (Which is a movie you know I WILL complain about all the time) that move has no right being that long. It just meanders through its plot with no urgency, and it pads out the run time. Also it’s just a bad movie. If a movie is good and happens to be over two hours people won’t complain. If it’s bad, that’s the first thing you notice.

something about the inaccessibility of films blah blah the emphasis of convenience over physical ownership classism and racism are all tied down into the idea of ethical media consumption (the way that corporations want us to consume media, not Tumblr purity culture)
You should fear The Digital Only Release

Yes of course major concerns with the death of the movie theatres is removing accessibility, allowing more censorship and a ton of other issues but a person can care about those issues and also value the uniqueness of movie theatre experiance and not want that lost. People do not exclusively care about one thing at a time and I can not stress that enough. Just because those major concerns matter more doesn't mean the other minor issues don't matter.
Listen I get that I really do, I also care about those things I just, it’s incredibly frustrating to see engangment based on something not the major issue
Like alright if you really feel strongly about the movie theater experience™️ then make your own post
But it’s not really the place to do so on a post about systematic racism and class oppression, it just comes across as rather flippant
Im a film major i kinda have that ingrained in my dna I don’t want to lose the theater experience, but like this is more than that
It’s more than the dimming of the lights or getting salty popcorn
It’s about not being able to experience movies in any context. It’s about how as an immigrant child my acess to internet or even cable box was never stable until I was a tennager. It’s about how I never cultivated a strong relationship to film until we had come into stable fincances, having grown up during the 08 financial crisis.
Now I’m seeing events repeat and it doesn’t sit well with me,.
I get that you can care about more than one thing at a time, and it’s rather obvious to me that no one wants to lose the theater experience. It’s integral to us a culture, but also no one is debating theater enjoyment. People are talking about how online movies make them more accessible to people but that will be true in a small percentage of cases in the end, within America’s context, and that I think deserves a more critical lense

People talk about Video On Demand for movies being a fundamentally good thing because it brings accessibility to the movies, but really that’s only gonna be true for a small percentage of people, and that the Death of the Movie theater is a fundamentally good thing because “Fuck Corporations” or whatever. And People fail to critically analyze that if movies went digital only, that the people in the parts of America in an internet drought because of the failure to incentivize the building of broadband, the accessibility of movies becomes a class and racial issue.
The places that have limited broadband access in the states, are places with a largely poorer minority population. It’s another way systematic racism affects people of color in this country: Limiting access to job opportunities, education, etc. Everything going online is not a good thing if it becomes Online only. Broadband internet access is also fucking Expensive.
In tangent with this, movies can only be viewed by a capable device, further limiting access to who can stream a movie. Don’t have a decent computer or smart phone or smart tv or streaming stick? Well you’re fresh out of luck until it comes out on Blu-ray or Dvd. That is, if you have a player.
The problem with mostly digital releases is that the accessibility of movies becomes more and more an issue of The Haves and the Have nots. There must always be a place where you can physically go and watch a movie.

what's residuals?
Basically it’s the money that is made over time after the initial release of a peice of media, but in this context film.
The people getting residuals are not crew members like camera operators lighting or basically anyone in the bts production. It’s usually actors and the bigger name people who get residuals, I think writers too sometimes but that’s a newer development that I don’t remember the details of and has more to do with tv
