In Your Boots by @thesecretdetectivecollection- funny, sweet, MNF-era. SO CUTE Gary jumping to conclusions and panicking over Jamie leaving. Lots of Jamie-scenery descriptions of pretty eyes and "absurd cheekbones" and "Jamie's reliable heart" <3 

keep your silver, give me that gold by @thesecretdetectivecollection - MNF-era Carraville. Jamie decides to box Rio Ferdinand. Gary has SERIOUS RESERVATIONS about his beefy colleague (just colleague, no feelings, cough cough) putting himself in harms way for a stupid charity wager. Thing come to a head in a good way. Lots of verbal eye candy Carra. <3 

Loss / loss / win by milleseptcent guuuuh the SCALE! The FEELS! Soulmates Carraville. Takes place from playing days to MNF-era. Gary and Carra, both without soul marks, fuck around in a casual relationship... for about twenty years. The ending is SO SWEET!

Anything That Isn’t This by @kloppend the sleeping death apocalypse fic, read if you want to ruin yourself for two or three days but ALSO the beauty of the writing is 100% worth the devastation, one of the finest written pieces in the fandom imho. HAUNTING, gorgeous, aching, amazing. 

Play the Whistle by @zevons - Referee!AU Carraville!! What more do you need to know?! Gary and Jamie’s football dreams never came true, so they do the next best thing. Lovely Jamie&Stevie friendship. Enemies to lovers. So much snippy banter before they realize they are actually besties who want to smootch. FEEL GOOD but with tons of depth as well. 

amunt by @carraville short, punchy, poetic = classic redandgold! Valencia!Gary, pining!Jamie. Also incredible that this was written only two weeks into Gary’s appointment, BEFORE the Barcelona loss, before things unravelled, so it’s an amazing time-capsule into the fandom in late 2015 (when they didn’t know if Gary would ever come back!) 

Through fresh eyes by @aramblingjay - Jamie comes to MNF. Gary deals. Truly top-notch writing, amazing language, deft characterization. It never overindulges while remaining poignant throughout. Can be read as pre-Carraville or platonic-soulmates type friendship. It’s tagged as incomplete but it is finished. Essential reading, a classic!

Advantages of Playing Away by @zevons MNF-era testimonial blowjob in Old Trafford dressing room Carraville!! Sooo sweet, soooo hot, dialogue is sharp and funny. Just perfect <3

Tasting Syrup on My Tongue by @heyyjulien - PLAYERS ERA!!! Jamie and Gary have a casual relationship that gets put to the test after Jamie’s injured in a derby game. Great banter-to-feels ratio, you will want to put Julien’s sweet Jamie in your pocket and give their Gary a big hug. Great romantic closing scene where they negotiate the implications of Jamie’s injury scare. Also SCHOLESY!! <3

It’s just not what’s done by @player1064 truly a Carraville writer that ‘burst onto the scene’ as fast and furious as Micah Richards! My fave of theirs. A truly hysterical premise on the surface that they plumb deep to turn up real emotion. I love the time-jump style. Wonderful David&Gary friendship, as well as all of the Co92 rallying around Gary. Covers all eras up until today, with a January 2024 Carraville in Courcheval scene!! <3 

Package Deal (It’s Valentine’s Day, ye dimwit) by @kloppinthekop My fave of their “Holiday Husbands” series. So cute and sweet and the love scene is sooooo (SOOO) hot and poignant !! Jamie taking care of Gary in every way on Valentine’s Day. Domestic feels. 

Love You More by @effervescentdragon outstanding emotional excavation, Jamie POV Carraville. Uses a slightly disorienting (in a good way) jump around style that isn’t time stamped, but if you know your Carraville, you get your footing in a sentence or two. It’s a bookended journey between ‘fuck you too’ (visceral hatred) to ‘fuck you too’ (affectionate). 

Gary Neville is Still a Red, Just a Different Shade by @fanficburner - your ultimate ABO Carraville! This isn’t for the faint-of-heart, angst abounds, I would not call this a romance! But a great character piece. Gary gets unwillingly bonded with Jamie, while still in love with Beckham. The standout part of this fic is the world-building and social implications of what an ABO society might actually look like; separate Omega changing rooms, registration offices for Omega registration, the harsh realities of an owned class of people.

2. anything that you'd like to write but feel like you're unable to?

i have a very straightforward answer for this. DEFENSELINE FIC!!!!! i feel so insane about the dynamic they have going on over there. i have a whole section in my gdocs of wilo/gabi moments in interviews that i want to build a fic off of but i feel like i just can't nail down their voices well enough to write a fic from either of their POVs. a lot of rpf for me is feeling comfy enough in their voice to write it but i don't think i have a good enough handle on how they speak to write about how they Think... if that makes sense.

(one of my fave wilo/gabi interactions is where they're arguing about who's the best dressed on the team and wilo goes yeah but you like my fashion and gabi's like eeeh sometimes. and wilo presses like so sometimes no? and gabi fake-winces at how bad it is and says no....and they kind of devolve into a laughing argument which wilo ends by saying something like yeah but i know you like that one outfit of mine. OUGH.)

17. past or present tense? why?

OKAY. even though both of my published ones have been in present tense i actually like past a lot more......i feel like there's a depth and reflection to it that lends it a lot more weight. present for me comes naturally when i'm writing shorter fic / when i want the fic to feel more stream-of-consciousness and really immersed in the character's POV. then again i love that present always feels more real to me......more (unintentional pun) present, like i can see it playing out in front of me. as you can see i'm quite indecisive which is a huge problem with my WIPs because for a single fic scenes always come to me in different tenses and i end up having to decide which one fits better.

28. any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing?

i am the worst person to ask this bc i genuinely don't look up writing advice....i've always believed that the best way to improve is to read more & write more. READ! both published books AND fic from authors you like. figure out what exactly you like about their writing, learn from them, try to recreate the same feeling their writing gives you. in 22/23 when i was arsenaling but unaware that there was actually a fan community i read every single one of tetrapod's arsenal fics and their style had a HUGE impact on me.....big fan also of old footie fic that's on livejournal/ported to ao3 etc because that was actually how i got into football (users saltstreets redandgold guede rave etc, basically all my ao3 bookmarks)

Gary should’ve known better than to answer his phone. It’s a beautiful day for football. Which has fuck all to do with Gary. Gary’s on holiday. At home maybe, but it still counts. He’d even had a lie-in ‘til nearly half seven.

He doesn’t, won’t, can’t hold back a weary sigh, soul-deep. He’s got a headache already. Worse, he already knows he won’t say no in the end.

Still.

“I can’t fuckin’ do it, Stuart. I’m on holiday.”

“What, in fuckin’ Bury?”

“How d’you know I’m still in Bury? Maybe I’m in Ibiza!”

“Fuck you are, you boring cunt. You’ve probably been in the back garden, tellin’ the daisies which way to grow.”

“Fuck off.” They both laugh, it’s fucking true innit.

“Fuck me.” He can’t do it. He will do it.

“Already got me lad on the way, son. He’ll scoop you up, you’ll be on the pitch in thirty. Lovely day for it.”

“They’ll not go for it, Stu.” For fucking obvious reasons. “Raffa won’t, anyways.”

“Already had it out with ‘em, you mong, ‘course I have. Sir Alex and Raffa are well up for it. Talked you up, didn’t I? No one I’d trust to do the job right. Sterling lad, absolutely professional he is, our Gary Neville, no one else for it.”

“No one else stupid enough to take it on, you mean.”

“Right you are, son!”

Stuart laughs some more at Gary’s pain. It’s a thing they do. “It don’t hurt you’re a short taxi ride away, either.”

“This is mad, this is.” Gary shakes his head. “If the scousers even let me off the pitch in one piece, I’m gonna get absolutely killed by the fans, no matter the result. Both sides, probably.”

“Yeah. But you’ll be golden in my books, Nev, don’t you worry about that.”

Gary feels a bit sick. “This is me fucked, you understand that, right?”

“Listen,” Stuart actually sounds worryingly sincere. “I wouldn’t ask it if we didn’t need you, Gaz. Really. I know it’s unorthodox, but I’ve made everything absolutely crystal with the managers. The press is being made aware. It’s the wrong time of year for a re-play, innit. Everyone wants to play today. I’ll protect you, lad, I swear it. It’ll be alright.”

He can see it now: Ex-Academy Player Officiates Derby Match, Ripped to Pieces By Former Teammates and Blood-Thirsty Scousers Alike!!

Gary tries to grasp at anything to make the situation better in his mind. “It’ll be Keane and Gerrard to captain, I assume?”

There’s a suspicious pause. Stuart sounds mildly apologetic. 

“Err, well. Gerrard’s out today, actually, knee’s acting up again. It’ll be Carragher in his place.”

Oh, well, fuck Gary Neville then. Just fuck him all day long.

“Oh, well, that’s more good news then, Stuart. The only moderately sane man in Liverpool is out on injury, in his stead an Actual Fucking Lunatic.” He is absolutely insane is Carragher. “Between him and Keane, it’s gonna be sunshine and fucking daisies. I can’t wait to be spoken to with nothing but dignity and respect for ninety minutes.”

Suddenly, Gary hears the desperate honks of a car horn idling impatiently just outside the kitchen window. Stuart must hear it over the phone, he sounds absolutely elated to ring off.

“That’ll be our Dave, then. Off you go, Gaz, that’s a good lad! Don’t forget your whistle, you’re gonna need it today, sure!”

Christ.

It’s gonna be a fuckin’ shambles.

terror camp ‘22 day 2: an informal reclist

Well, it’s been like a month (stuff came up) but Terror Camp was still SOME GOOD SHIT and honestly I’m not even a little bit done thinking about it yet. Since this one’s a little harder to directly seek in Terror fic, I have honored Mertz and Ninnis’s choice of reading material with loose inspiration. (Hey, I said that it was all very loosely related. This is still true.)

The Hound of the Baskervilles is, I agree, a capital novel, masterfully unfolding a character-driven and atmospherically spooky mystery. This fic is also those, and it’s sci-fi, and epistolary with an artfully crafted Crozier voice.

Vanity Fair is a colorful satire of Victorian social roles and the ways in which they get their hooks in each other, with a side of unromantic romance and deconstructing the artistic convention of the hero-protagonist. Just like this fic, which has the excellent logline “lonely rich spinster/handsome scheming servant but they’re both huge bitches.” Is this an admission that Hickey is like Becky Sharp, to me? Maybe a little bit.

okay!!!!!! okay!!!!! hear me out on this one!! this fic is wonderful. i’m a sucker for fics dealing with edward’s suffering during the worst of crozier’s captaincy, and this one is so good. blanky is so wonderful in this; i feel like his tender, kind side frequently gets overlooked in favor of his bigger, bolder attributes, and this fic truly delivers on everything i’ve been missing! it’s really gentle and sweet and i urge you to give it a read!!!!

this piece is so good!! it has some really beautiful (sad) foreshadowing of the franklin expedition, and is just... so soft, with some wonderful romantic tension!! and it’s funny! darwin and fitzroy are wonderful in this, and i’m always here for fic that deals with peglar learning to read (which this does!!!).

on beechey island, fitzjames reveals clio’s cheetah to the men. or... something like it! this piece is really a blast; fitzjames is in rare form, francis is glaring form the sidelines, and le vesconte is an absolute champ. and the ending is wonderfully witty and racy!

set during 1.09, this fic is a really poignant, heartwrenching piece in which james comes to terms with the reality of his death, and of his life, as he watches francis grieve. very sad, and wonderfully written!

70s scifi (space program!!!) au. really great translation of the terror; the mood in this is so good!!! and the little flashbacks are fantastic. it’s pretty sad, but it hurts in a good way.

wwii au. edward is a squadron leader in the royal air force, and jopson is a corporal working for group captain crozier. i’m weak for wwi and wwii aus to begin with, and this one is done beautifully. while it doesn’t hand-wave the trauma and heartbreak of war, it doesn’t hit you over the head with it either, and the result is a really soft, bittersweet, hopeful piece.

this piece is!!! beautiful!!! very poignant, and really had me feeling for solomon. i love what’s been done with the soulmark conceit—it’s not just a simple “we have soulmarks, we’re soulmates!!!’ au (which i’ll admit to enjoying too), but a really thoughtful take on the trope. the slow way tozer puzzles everything out is wonderful, and i love the glimpses we get into several of his friendships & relationships.

6. fic you’d recommend to someone new in the fandom?

Hmmmmm this is a good question. It’s weird in football rpf because it depends on the teams you support, etc. So I guess I’m not totally sure. If it was someone who was a Spurs fan like I am I would definitely point them towards @ericdier-and-chill or @howsareeasy or possibly ourseparatedcities since I generally like what I read.

I think for RMCF fic I would say @pob-lwc-caixa is doing great stuff and @guti has some fics that are fun.

Yeah wow, this is really pairing/team specific so IDK that there is THAT ONE FIC that I would recommend. I have been reading some of the things that saltstreets does and really like the style of them and they have some pretty accessible (if older) pairings.

8. google docs, microsoft word, or other?

Google docs and other, at least these days. Generally, I write in Google docs because it means I have access to the fic on my laptop or my tablet or my phone or a different computer, so it’s nice because I can work on it on the bus or wherever I happen to be.

With the AU, since it is long, I’m working on things in my writing software, WriteWay, since that’s good for storyboarding and planning and making revision notes and character notes and keeping a folder of research and reference stuff and it also tracks your daily progress for you.

The actual writing I do these days is on a site called 750words.com I don’t know why I like writing in there, it’s just a blank screen where you type and it keeps track of how many words you’ve written and the target is 750, but honestly you can write as many as you want. It’s nice because it tracks your word count and some other basic metrics, etc. and it saves all the words for the month so I can go back to individual days and copy/paste what I wrote into Google docs and WriteWay. It’s helping me write, so that’s what I’m using.

Truth or Dare by Dollylux. This fic. I swear.

So okay, I have had feelings about Iker Casillas for a long time (it’s a David Beckham problem) and when he had that terrible World Cup in 2014 I had an ENORMOUS UNWANTED FEELS RESURGENCE and was like I need some fic where Iker is not sad and instead is happy and loved and snuggled.

This fic is not that fic. Or, well, it is sometimes that fic, but not always.

But we’re not here to talk about Iker Casillas. I admit I have ZERO IDEA where the Iker/Cesc thing came from and I’m not hugely into it (although in that fic it definitely works and it made me look at it differently and say...hmmmm. okay.) No. We are here to talk about how I spent YEARS OF MY LIFE actively trying not to have positive feelings about Sergio Ramos OR Fernando Torres and then I read this 120k fic full of FEELINGS AND NONSENSE in like 2 days and all of a sudden I’m over here like cool, I guess I ship Iker with EVERYTHING and have feelings about Sergio Ramos and Fernando Torres that are not negative now. Thanks for that.

I didn’t want them nor did I ask for them, but now they are here and I cannot shake them no matter how hard I try.
