I've gotten a FEW asks already asking for RK (this was written and saved as a draft MINUTES after the reblog. Currently it’s clear a LOT of people want to know about the Red Kraken. My Heart is So Warm rn), so I gotta say I adore the enthusiasm (copypasting the prompt from the post because it would look insane without the context)

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): Waltz, obviously. She’s been my favorite ever since their original inception, and I’ve grown her as a character more and more with time.

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): No one in the RK is explicitly “adorable”, so I’d say it either goes to Salsa or Mac, Salsa for being a literally ball of sunshine (despite being the physically strongest and largest member of the crew) and Mac for just being some awkward nerd who got tricked into being a pirate because of some catgirl

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Difficult to say since the story does not yet exist so therefore its fandom is based mostly upon my speculations, and any of the “character moments” in my head are Only In My Head, so while it would be disingenuous to call anyone “underappreciated, I’ll give it to Samba for now. Despite being the captain, he doesn’t get much attention, but then again I haven’t given y’all much.

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): Again, rough since this is all speculative. But, my glup shitto is the inevitably Larry cameo that my self-indulgent ass will almost certainly put in.

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): Disco is the funniest possible answer here since she is literally poor, and literally a cat and literally pretty little (with only waltz and dougie shorter than her in the crew) while also being “problematic” and kinda pathetic in her own fun way.

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Tap in the sense that she has to put up with Disco, which is torment in and of itself. Twist for actual Torment Reasons.

eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell):  Dougie. For a fun vacation. He would probably escape by beating the devil at a game of chess (read: eating the pieces) which was only offered because they could not find a form of torture that made sense.

RK crew roles in their Minecraft survival server?

Salsa: Singlehandedly running an enormous farm while also adding little visual fluorishes to the house.

Disco: Blitzkrieging into caves to try and find diamonds first. Succeeds, but dies five times before it happens. Also tries to solo the Ender Dragon (fails)

Mac: The one who tells everyone the recipes when they inevitably forget while also telling everyone strats. Unfortunately not very good at combat.

Waltz: Absolutely adores the potion mechanic and makes potions for everyone.

Samba: Always exploring the mainland to expand his map, leaving signs scattered across the world to the extent of “Samba was here”. Also tries to decorate the house although his interior design skills could use work.

Tango: Tries to make navigating the Nether manageable for everyone else, especially those who aren’t great at combat

Jig: Logs on once to claim a room with a sign that just says “Jig’s Room”. Inside is a bed. He comes back onto the server two years later and adds a single painting.

Dougie: Absolutely fucking around with redstone at all times. Not allowed near the lava buckets.

Tap: Pretends she isn’t really into the game and is usually out killing monsters at night, joining the server because “it’s an exercise in teamwork”. A few months in, Disco finds a house she built underground that is enormous and absolutely decked out. It’s their secret.

Twist: Likes aiding in the aesthetic of their homebase, doing big grand builds. Is incredibly good at using the bow, which makes Tap silently jealous.

Alright, so here are some fresh references for the red kraken, complete with some pieces of fanart I’ve seen of them that look the part, however the descriptions may have some lack of matching since their designs have been through some changes over time.

Mac

(art by necconya on instagram) Mac’s got messy black hair that’s around mid-length (but goes a lot more out than down) and round glasses. He’s above average height and very lanky, usually carrying a small book around with him. Upon joining the crew, he wears a red plaid button down with some baggy brown pants and eventually a bandana over his hair, trying his best to nail the pirate look (whether it was successful is up for debate). He also probably looks tired half the time.

Disco

(art by @tmvagabond) Disco is a blue-furred yellow-eyed catgirl with black stripes that run perpendicular to her limbs and sideways on her face who dons a red blouse and somewhat torn up brown pants. She’s usually carrying either her weapon of choice, a crossbow, or whatever she’s recently stolen.

Twist

(art by @val-ocity )Twist wears a thick red sweater with a darker red scarf featuring a dolphin embroidered into the end of it. She has freckles on her black skin and curly black hair with a sidecut on each side. Her eyes used to be brown, but ever since the start of where the story begins, they’ve turned purple for some reason, sometimes glowing an incredibly bright purple when her powers are out of control. I’m sure it’s nothing.

Tap

(art by @tmvagabond) Tap is also a furry (technically known as “Beastials” in this world) and is part rabbit with burnt orange fur. She has somewhat long black wavy hair and hazel eyes. Her attire is usually a more skin-tight dark bodysuit to allow her to be more difficult to spot along with a red bandana that is spotted like the skin of a cuttlefish and black fingerless gloves, however will wear unbuttoned flannel shirts in more casual settings.

Samba

(art by @thooidd or beaudryfilms on Twitter (also someone who is cute)) Samba, the proud captain of the Red Kraken, is a somewhat burly guy who usually doesn’t wear a shirt, which reveals his hairy, scar-ridden chest, however will usually wear a crimson coat with golden highlights to at least cover up somewhat. He has short red hair with a full red beard with blue eyes and after a recent accident has a classic peg leg along with a harpoon gun to replace his left arm. He wears bright tan pants underneath his golden kraken-shaped belt buckle.

Dougie

(This art was submitted to me, and when I looked back it didn’t tell me who submitted it, so if you’re the submitter hmu and I’ll put your name up!!!!) Dougie is…..an odd creature. He looks more like a ghoul or a goblin than a person with pinkish skin and wiry white hair. He’s much shorter than all the other members with clothing that looks more like a patchwork of red torn rags than actual clothing. He’s usually seen either wearing huge circular glasses or equally huge green goggles when he’s working on….whatever he’s working on. He also always wears his shrimp-shaped earrings.

Tango

(art by @val-ocity) Tango has short black hair that’s usually sticking up somewhat, brown eyes, olive skin and is ripped. Just absolutely stacked my dude. Like. Wow. His weapon of choice is a bl. His attire of choice is a red suit with the sleeves ripped off along with long red pants. His right arm has a tattoo of a shark with exposed teeth along his bicep.

Waltz

(Art by @redbuddi) HER! Waltz is a short girl with messy blonde hair that’s usually tied up in a ponytail. She has green eyes, and her face is always partially obscured by her squid-shaped gas mask. She wears a brown coat (that lightly glows in the dark from exposure to previous experiments) with a red shirt underneath, a pair of dark blue pants, and brown boots. Around her belt are usually a variety of corked flasks containing gaseous potions of various colors (the most common being pink, orange and green, however there are always different varieties).

Jig

A very tall, incredibly slim and somewhat elderly man (moreso middle-aged) with a clean-cut head of hair and sideburns that are brown with plenty of gray hairs growing in. Like Tango, he wears a suit, however this one still has its sleeves. He also wears very small spectacles along with a bowler hat with a sea turtle sewn into the front.

Salsa

Salsa’s infectious happiness is visible everywhere she goes, and is always always ALWAYS smiling. She has short pink hair, freckles and grey eyes, and is found either wearing a white shirt with a red vest or her red checkered apron. Also, she is very big, very muscular, and might accidentally break something during a hug. Also I am formally apologizing to this character because of how often I’ve changed her design

wait have you mentioned each RK member’s orientation yet?

Not explicitly, however most of their specific orientations aren’t EXPLICITLY defined yet (like pan vs bi vs lesbian) both because their overall orientation isn’t strictly relevant to the plot (which is my primary focus in writing this story) and because I fall into a risk of putting my own personality into it too far (in other words, making everyone bi)

That said, here’s what I have thus far. They are subject to change.

you got any Fun Kraken Facts you want 2 share? just like in general?

If you search “red kraken” on the blog you’ll find a few. Here are some more. I might have said them before but nevertheless

The Red Kraken started as a coalition between Samba and Tango. Salsa joined next, then Waltz. It was just the four of them for a long while, then Tap joined, then Dougie, then Twist, then Jig, then Disco and Mac.

Until Mac and Disco joined, Waltz was the youngest member. Until Jig joined, Tango was the oldest.

There are three existing canon’s of the RK. There’s the Realms canon, which is DRAMATICALLY different from what we know now (think of it like a beta version), there’s what I’ll call “True Red Kraken”, which is the version of them I’m writing a story about, and then there’s Surely You Quest Red Kraken, where they appear in the upcoming DnD podcast (which should be going live at some point today) where a few changes are made, mostly because the story is about the players, and much less about the Red Kraken.

Dougie, Waltz, Disco, and Tap all have not revealed their true name to anyone else on the crew. Tap because she trusts no one, Disco because she digs the mystery behind it all, Waltz because she does not remember, and Dougie because he claims “no one could possibly comprehend it”

Tap is averse to anyone who can use magic. Oddly enough, Twist, the only fully realized mage on the ship and one of the strongest mages in the world, is her closest companion.

The Ahab Force is a group of vigilantes whose goal is to eliminate piracy from the seas. Their leader has a specific grudge against the Red Kraken

The only members of the Red Kraken who had not formally broken the law prior to joining are Twist and Salsa. Maybe Dougie, but only because no one knows what he did before joining.

Overwatch

Disco - Tracer or Genji, sometimes Lucio if healers are needed. All about that speed.

Mac - Soldier or Hanzo, but can play pretty much anyone. Usually subscribes to simpler playstyles, but is good at using them effectively.

Twist - Echo, Mei, Sombra, or Symmetra. Likes to be the annoying player, but tries to avoid annoying playstyles. True defeat is losing and being unable to insult your opponent out of rage, despite all the rage you hold in

Dougie - Torbjorn, Junkrat, or Wrecking Ball, depending on his mood. Unlike Twist, he is as annoying as possible

Salsa - Almost always plays support usually going Mercy, Zen or Brigitte. Sometimes picks up Zarya

Samba - Reaper, Pharah, McCree or D.va, usually trying to get big kills with Ultimates

Tango - Reinhardt, Winston, Roadhog or Orisa. Go tank or go home, usually opting for close combat, so he also has a pocket Reaper and Doomfist

Tap - Hanzo, Widowmaker and sometimes Ashe. Will sometimes pick Ana if they’re down a healer, but isn’t good at it. Enjoys sniping.

Jig - Baptiste, Sigma, Zenyatta or Symmetra. Enjoys characters with multiple pieces that require keeping track of at times

Waltz - Moira or Ana, enjoying the duality of healing and dealing damage, although she dabbles with Ashe from time to time.

Wow I covered everyone but Bastion. Anyway, now for the best game of the three dont @ me (Idk if I’ll go into as deep of strategical phrasing here since a lot of its covered in the OW section but)

Paladins

Disco - Maeve (loving that Catgirl Life), Cassie (loves the mobility and the crossbow), Evie, and Talus. She’s a huge fan of most of the flanks since that suits her style of play.

Mac - Viktor, Willo, Mal’Damba, Buck, Lex. Do not sleep on Mac in Paladins, he has cards specialized for every character down to a science, he has frankly spent way too much time on this game.

Twist - Imani (main), Corvus, Inara, Koga. Can adapt to any playstyle, and overall just kicks all kinds of ass.

Dougie - Ruckus, Bomb King, Moji, Zhin. The former two because “they’re funny” and the latter two because they make people angry

Salsa - Once again, really likes healing, so she usually picks Seris, Furia, Grover, or Grohk.

Samba - Dredge (for the aesthetic), Drogoz, Bomb King, Fernando. Aiming is for suckers. Still usually leads the charge

Tango - Terminus (main), Makoa, Khan, Raum. He’s just a guy that tanks hard. He isn’t that good at the game though.

Tap - Strix main, Kinessa, Sha Lin, Vivian. Sometimes switches to Ash if she’s tilted.

Jig - Torvald, Atlas, Corvus, Ying. Enjoys all of the stranger and more out there mechanics and loves using them in fun ways.

Waltz - Pip (feels a sort of kinship with a character that fires potions that can be used to harm and heal. Considered making a potion that turns people into chickens at one point), Io, Skye, and Tiberius (although she isn’t very good as Tiberius. Disco thinks she has as crush on him, which she ADAMANTLY denies)

Weird question, but do you have canonical heights for all the Red Kraken characters? Sorry if this has been asked before.

I don’t think I’ve ever revealed them, but I also never had a firmly solid height decided, so until I come up with an “official” height chart, here's a pretty close estimation:

Mac: 6′0

Disco: 5′5

Samba: 5′11

Tango: 7′0

I’ve probably talked about them a good bit already! I got a tag for them called “red kraken” (which I will tag this post as for convenience) but here’s the long and short of it.

The Red Kraken are a band of pirates who are sailing the seas of a newly uncovered world that was once obscured by thick purple clouds and swarming with strange violet monsters. However now the wall of clouds are clear and exploring the new world is anyone’s game.

Each member of the Red Kraken is named after a dance due to the captain (Samba)’s belief that they are simply dancers upon the melodies that the ocean provides. Each member also wears an accessory that relates to a sea creature once they have proven themselves to be loyal enough to the Kraken. This includes Samba, the captain with a Kraken-shaped belt buckle, Tango, the second in command with a tattoo on his arm shaped like a shark, Waltz, the alchemist who creates aerosol potions wearing a gas mask in the shape of a squid, Tap, the scout of the Kraken who wears a bandana with spotted skin akin to a cuttlefish, Twist, the mage of the group who wears a scarf with a dolphin embroidered onto the end, Jig, the strategist who wears a suit with a sea turtle shape sewn into the back, Dougie, the mechanic of the crew who creates magical machines of sorts and is the closest to a mad scientist up there with Waltz and he wears earrings in the shape of shrimp, Salsa, the chef and emotional center of the crew who wears gloves with crab claw designs, and then the two newest members Mac and Disco.

I’m writing all of this into one big story that I hope to be releasing pretty soon. I want to get a few chapters under my belt first just so that I’m entirely sure that I’m going to stay dedicated to this story. I have a prologue done, and the first chapter is about halfway there. I’ll probably post it when I finish the second or third chapter, but time will tell. I seem pretty dedicated, but I don’t wanna post it, get people hyped, then leave them hangin’. I’ll definitely be keeping you all posted.

Shitposting aside though, this really helped me out to flesh out some of these characters more. I used a fun aspect wheel made by @turntechgodammit found here to help determine that because it has a lot of nice character stuff, but nothing too special for the class part outside of A) how they are in my story and B) what I see on the wiki, which had a lot more than I expected (although it’s surface level so nitpicking nerds who will say that any classes are gender exclusive, do not interact).

Fun fact: Actually writing an episodic series of stories or smthn about The Red Kraken so hopefully I can push through with that and you can get some rad info on that, but here’s some info about Tango until then.

In the DnD series, Tango is an orc. I’m still on the edge of what level of fantasy I’m going to have my stories be, since I do want SOME fantasy races, but I don’t want to make it too much of the same old elf/dwarf/orc/goblin/yadda yadda yadda. So for these, we’ll say Tango is an orc, and in the story, he’ll either stay an orc or just be a Big Guy™

One of the first members of the Red Kraken, and the closest to Samba.

Originally joined the Red Kraken with Samba because he was searching for his father, who had taken to the seas years before. Tango never found his father, but eventually stopped caring.

Tamed the shark he rides with his bare hands, named him Major. This event is what gave him a few scars on his chest, and also what inspired the idea of head members all having iconography of aquatic creatures, starting with him donning a face mask that looks like the mouth of a shark

Tango found Waltz as an infant during a raid on a wealthy town to find that her parents had fled in fear without taking her. The house ended up catching fire, and Tango did what he could to save her, eventually adopting her into the crew.

Tango hates working alone on missions, usually opting to bring along another admin with him, since his strategies usually include some variety of cooperation between members

It takes a long time for Tango to trust new members of the Red Kraken, even when they’re upgraded to an admin. It took him a long time to warm up to Twist, Tap, and Salsa, he STILL doesn’t trust Jig (granted he is the newest), and he’s not really sure why Dougie is considered an admin (of course I can talk about those guys another time).

Considers himself more old-fashioned and refuses to accept any mechanical or technological upgrades that Dougie continues to insist upon, however still respects how much they assist others when strategizing.

Honestly thank you so much for giving me literally any reason to talk about the Red Kraken. If you guys want to ask me more about them I would be HAPPY to talk about them because I love these dudes and I’m loving writing about them.
