Credit © 🎞 ✅ @eiko_jones_ Post by @pacificwild #SalmonNews // In 2009, just 1.6 million Fraser River sockeye returned from the Pacific Ocean to spawn, shockingly lower than the originally anticipated 10.6 million. This crisis triggered a federal commission led by BC Supreme Court Justice Bruce Cohen — a 1100+ page report consisting of 75 recommendations to turn things around for Fraser River sockeye salmon. One of the key drivers in wild salmon decline in the Fraser is the net pen salmon farms on the BC coast, particularly in the Discovery Islands. Cohen decided that these net pen salmon farms were a serious threat to Fraser sockeye, but there were too many scientific unknowns, and decided to give DFO eight years to fill the knowledge gaps. He recommended that come September 30, 2020, fish farms should be prohibited unless they were proven to have minimal risk to Fraser River sockeye. Aquatic ecologists have found overwhelming evidence that the current open-net pen farm mode is extremely harmful to wild salmon, with an emphasis on the damaging effects sea lice have on wild fish. The deadline to end fish farming on Discovery Islands is quickly approaching and likely won't be met. This isn’t just an issue for Fraser River sockeye. Up along the central and north coasts of BC, fish farms are wreaking havoc on other populations of wild salmon migrating through river systems and coastal waters of the #GreatBearRainforest. It's time to #GetFishFarmsOut of our province! #SalmonCount Read more via a new @hakaimag article at the link in our bio! Did you know, 2019 saw the lowest number of wild sockeye salmon return to the B.C. coast in history? In the Fraser River, 90% fewer sockeye returned than was forecasted by @fisheriesoceanscan. During their annual journey, sockeye and other threatened species of wild salmon must swim past open-net fish farms that spew a harmful virus called piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) into their migration route. Two years ago, B.C.’s salmon farming industry was caught dumping virus-infected blood into Discovery Passage, a critical area for returning wild salmon. Recent dives in November 2019 by @tavishcampbell have shown the blood is still flowing and is still infected with PRV. This virus, which came from the Atlantic ocean, infects 80% of the farmed fish in B.C. @justinpjtrudeau committed to removing fish farms from the ocean by 2025. Help ensure this promise is kept. Let him and DFO's Minister, @bernadettejordanmp how much you want them to #GetFishFarmsOut! Learn more in this IGTV video by @TavishCampbell and check out CTV News' coverage from last night at the link in our bio and stories. #SalmonCount #SalmonNation #WildFirst #Salmon #PacificSalmon https://www.instagram.com/p/B5uPTQ8hStB/?igshid=1w1eba8679zhe

🚨Call to Action!🚨 ➡️ @pnwprotectors Credit © 🎬 ✅ @tavishcampbell INFECTED BLOOD STILL FLOWING! Two years ago, British Columbia’s fish farming industry was caught dumping infected blood into Canada’s largest wild salmon migration route. @tavishcampbell returned underwater this past month and revealed the blood is still flowing and STILL INFECTED with piscine orthoreovirus. This virus, which came from the Atlantic ocean, infects 80% of the farmed fish in B.C. and is proven harmful to Pacific salmon.🐟 Fisheries and Oceans Canada is tasked with both regulating and promoting the fish farming industry and this conflict of interest is leading them to ignore the law and continue to allow infected farmed salmon to be transferred into the ocean. The Liberal Party of Canada has promised to solve this problem by transitioning fish farms out of the ocean and onto land by 2025. Help ensure they keep their promise by sending a message to: @justinpjtrudeau @fisheriesandoceanscan @bernadettejordanmp Powerful post & video by @tavishcampbell Thank you @farlyncampbell and Jody Eriksson for banner painting. 🚨Let’s all write letters to: Minister of fisheries Bernadette Jordan: 200 Kent st Station 15N100 Ottawa ON K1A 0E6 [email protected] #getfishfarmsout #wildsalmon #salmoncount #salmon #fishfarms #virus #bloodwater #disease #turningthetide https://www.instagram.com/p/B5xWoTNBWk4/?igshid=zx5127xzuun2

Please watch and read! Via @eco_jgatto Reposted from @pacificwild - Last week, our friends at @clayoquot.action discovered trucks moving large amounts of dead farmed salmon from @cermaqcanada’s Tofino fish plant. The mass die-off is taking place at three of their operations in the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Region, north of Tofino, B.C., in the territory of Ahousaht First Nation. Impacts from open-net pen salmon farms such as sea lice epidemics, pesticide use, viral outbreaks, and harmful algae blooms pose a serious risk to Clayoquot Sound's historically low wild salmon populations. If Cermaq is unable to manage fish health in their own facilities, how will they ensure negative impacts on wild fish are avoided? It's time to #getfishfarmsout of B.C. Tell Trudeau to keep his promise to ban this practice. Take action now—sign this petition and share: salmonpeople.ca/remove-all-fish-farms (clickable link in our bio). #SalmonCount #fishfarms #wildfirst #keepitwild #salmon #salmonnation #bcnature #bcpoli #conservation #GetFishFarmsOut #NoFishNoBlackfish #PNW #WildSalmon #BC Credit © Video by @clayoquot.action Sea lice footage by @tavishcampbell https://www.instagram.com/p/B5GYQKRB22u/?igshid=1ipxvp3l7tdra
