Part 1: ★ Box Office Analysis: Salman Khan is the biggest Bollywood superstar at box office since 1947; Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Dharmendra follow!
Dec 16, 2020
The difference between a star and a superstar is the ability of the latter to ensure a good opening for most of his films and deliver big grossers that create benchmarks at the box-office. Over the last 75 years, Bollywood has seen several stars, however, there have been select few stars, who managed to get the superstar tag due to the culmination of record openers and big grossers. And without any doubts, the names which will find a place in top 10 superstars of all time in books of Bollywood history include Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Raj Kapoor, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan, as these seven names (in any order) have been consistent for a larger part of their career in delivering not just big hits but also record openers. The battle for 8, 9 and 10 spots will be between Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Mithun Chakraborty, Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, depending on the success count, box-office impact and longevity.  Over the last few days, social media has been buzzing about the superstars who have delivered maximum highest grossers of the year since the time India became Independent i.e. 1947. We at Bollywood Hungama have come up with the list of superstars with maximum highest grossers of the year, which would give a sense of who has dominated box-office like never before in their career.
Rank 1 - Salman Khan
Salman Khan is the perfect example of a superstar with raw stardom, whose fan following will stay intact irrespective of the film’s quality. And to have such a loyal fan following in the social media age is in itself an achievement. In his career spanning over 30 years, he has delivered 10 highest grossers of the year, which is a record for any actor in the history of Indian cinema. With some gas still left in the tank, he stands a chance to add a film or two more to the list, making him out of reach for most of the actors in today’s time. It was a surprise for us to discover this, but well, Salman has never really broadcasted his achievements in the media and hence, everything comes across as a surprise. His 10 highest grossers of the year include Maine Pyar Kiya, Saajan, Hum Aapke Hai Koun, Hum Saath Saath Hai, No Entry, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Tiger Zinda Hai. He stands tall against the stalwarts of Bollywood indeed.
From the current lot of actors, Ajay Devgn got his first highest grosser of the year in 2020 with Tanhaji and Akshay Kumar is yet to open his account when it comes to delivering highest grossing film of the year. Rajesh Khanna on the other hand has 2 highest grossing films of the year in Aaradhana and Haathi Mere Saathi. Sunny Deol too is in the list with 2 highest grossers of the year in Border and Gadar.
Stay tuned for detailed analysis of all the top actors and an in depth account of all HGOTY since 1947 in part 2 of this series.

Part 3: ★ Highest Grosser of The Year from 1990 to 2020: Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan dominate, as Hrithik Roshan climbs the ladder!
Dec 29, 2020
In the first part of the highest grosser of the year series, Bollywood Hungama did an in-depth analysis of the actors with maximum highest grossing film of the year spanning 73 years from 1947 to 2020. While Salman Khan was crowned the biggest Bollywood superstar since independence with 10 highest grossers of the year, Dilip Kumar bagged the second spot with 9 films in the list, whereas Aamir Khan was third with 7 films in the list. Shah Rukh Khan on the other hand had 5 films in the list, while Hrithik Roshan was fast climbing the ladder of success with 4 highest grossers of the year in merely 20 years span. The top three stars contributed 26 of the total 73 highest grossers of the year, which in percentage terms is 35%. In the second part of the series, we came up with a detailed decade by decade analysis of stars fighting for the top spot in the respective decades from 1957 to 1989. Now, in the third and final part of this Bollywood Hungama exclusive, we are back with the number crunching analysis from 1990 till 2020. Interestingly, in a span of these 31 years (From 1989 till 2020), the three Khans – Salman Khan (10), Aamir Khan (7) and Shah Rukh Khan (5) – in total delivered 22 highest grossers of the year, whereas Hrithik Roshan delivered 4 more, leaving just 5 spots in three decades for some 25 plus actors of the industry to score the biggest hit of the year. Here’s a 3-decade analysis
1990 to 1999: Sunny Deol, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan take charge
In terms of sheer box-office pull, this decade was dominated by three names – Sunny Deol, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, though Anil Kapoor and Govinda too were going strong in terms of hit count this decade. While Deol delivered one highest grosser of the year this decade in Border, he maintained his supremacy with constant flow of releases. Ghayal (1990) too managed to surpass the collections of Dil, if we take reruns into account, taking his total to two films.
Salman on the other hand rose like a phoenix with Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989) and followed it up with three other highest grossers of the year in the 90s – Saajan, Hum Aapke Hai Koun and Hum Saath Saath Hain.
Shah Rukh Khan was the biggest find of the 90s, particularly for the kind of consistency he showed at the box-office – both in terms of opening as well as lifetime collections. He delivered two highest grossers of the year in the 90s – Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He became a superstar within two years of arriving in the industry, and with every passing year, bettered his standing. As the 90’s came to an end, the trade already started to label Shah Rukh Khan alongside legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar. In-fact, in times to come, he became the biggest superstar India has ever seen in the overseas market (more on this later). Though Salman has a lead in terms of HGOTY in the 90s, the consistency gave Shah Rukh an edge over him for the top spot of 90s, with him and Sunny following suit. However, in terms of highest grossers of the year, Salman scored big, and without any doubts, it was in the 90s itself that he cemented his position as a superstar as he had some solid openers, massive blockbusters and big grossers under his kitty within 10 years in the industry. Sunny Deol on the other hand saw the lead in terms of sheer raw mass fan following in the 90s. Anil Kapoor and Govinda too had one HGOTY year in Beta (1992) and Aankhen (1993).
2000 to 2009: Shah Rukh Khan’s supremacy challenged by Hrithik Roshan
This decade saw a major turnaround of things, as Shah Rukh continued to scale new heights in the beginning, whereas Salman Khan was seeing a slight downfall due to controversies in the personal space, whereas Aamir Khan had taken a break from acting due to some issues in personal life following his divorce. While everyone thought that Shah Rukh Khan will be undisputed number one star of 00’s, there came Hrithik Roshan to challenge the supremacy and following the release of Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, there was no looking back for him. He became a superstar overnight and just the second actor after Salman to make his debut with a highest grosser of the year. Till date, Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai is considered the biggest launch vehicle for a Bollywood actor, and one had to witness the euphoria surrounding Hrithik post his debut, to believe it. It marked the arrival of a superstar, probably the last of Hindi cinema. In the first seven years of this decade, Shah Rukh Khan delivered three highest grossers of the year in Devdas (2002), Veer Zaara (2004) and Om Shanti Om (2007), whereas Hrithik Roshan too had three highest grossers of the year in Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai (2000), Koi Mil Gaya (2003) and Dhoom 2 (2006). In-fact, in 2006, the top 2 grossers of the year (Dhoom 2 and Krrish) belonged to Hrithik. Towards the decade end, Aamir made a comeback and delivered back-to-back HGOTY in Ghajini (2008) and 3 Idiots (2009). Salman and Sunny Deol had one HGOTY each in No Entry and Gadar, with latter being the biggest grosser of all time in India. Akshay too was strong for a period of 3 years between 2006 and 2008, with back-to-back hits and bumper openers, however, none of his releases could find a place in the prestigious list of highest grosser of the year, and till date, though a major film star, he awaits his turn to open his account in this aspect. The decade belonged to Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.
2010 to 2020: The Salman Khan Era, with some cameo’s by Aamir Khan
It would not be wrong to say that the decade of 2010 to 2019 belonged to Salman Khan as the superstar delivered five highest grosser of the year – Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), along with three second highest grosser of the year – Ready (2011, overlapping with Bodyguard), Kick (2014) and Sultan (2016) – indicating that 7 of the 10 years belonged to him, an unheard phenomenon in Bollywood history, easily putting him in the list of all-time greats.
Aamir comes at the third spot with three highest grossers of the year, which all proved to be all time grossers – Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014) and Dangal (2016). 8 of the 10 years belonged to these two mighty Khans, dominating like no other decade post-Independence. Hrithik Roshan took the tally of his highest grosser of the year to 4 films with War becoming the highest grosser of 2019. He is just a film away to tie with Raj Kapoor, Dharmendra and Shah Rukh Khan, and all this within a period of 20 years. Ranbir Kapoor opened his account this decade with his first highest grosser of the year with Sanju (2018), and Ajay Devgn too, after an illustrious career of over 25 years, delivered his first highest grosser of the year with Tanhaji (2020).
To put the last 3 decades in a nutshell, Salman Khan (10 films) + Aamir Khan (7 films) + Shah Rukh Khan (5 films) topped the year 22 times since 1989, whereas Hrithik topped it 4 times since 2000 – Putting these 4 as the top 4 stars of Hindi cinema since the new millennium aka 2000. While the three Khans have at most 5 more years to continue as leading heroes until they reach the age of 60, Hrithik still has ample of gas left in his tank to keep climbing the ladder, and aim at the sky. Salman, Aamir and Shah Rukh can add a film or two more to their kitty and in the years to come. Given the current pattern of working adapted by the actors, it would be near impossible for anyone to reach the double-digit mark in terms of highest grosser of the year and dethrone Salman from the top spot with 10 films at the moment, which is highest for any actor in history of Hindi cinema. Aamir, with 7 films as biggest grosser of the year at present, however can aim at the second spot - a tie with Dilip Kumar, who has ended his career with 9 highest grossers of the year.

★ Sultan to Bharat: Salman Khan’s mega success features a Delhi University biochemistry grad!
8 June, 2019
Ali Abbas Zafar is a master at disguising the subtext in the opulent, big-budget spectaculars he has been delivering.
Tumblr media
One of Bollywood’s biggest hit-machines is a man who left his home in Dehradun at 16 to study biochemistry at Delhi’s Kirori Mal College, but survived on a diet of Saadat Hasan Manto, Premchand and William Shakespeare. Ali Abbas Zafar has recast Salman Khan’s career with three mega movies, Sultan (2016), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and now Bharat (2019).
He is the Salman Whisperer. Son of a father who moved from the Border Roads Organisation to ONGC and a mother who taught English and Urdu at a government school, Ali Abbas Zafar has single-handedly made back-to-back Rs 300-crore movies.
Zafar, 37, is a master at disguising the subtext in the opulent, sometimes noisy, big-budget spectaculars he has been delivering. His early reading shaped his worldview, gave him his belief in equality, in rational thought, and in India’s democracy. His heroes were Bhagat Singh (in Tiger Zinda Hai, Tiger reads a bedtime story about him to his son) and Mahatma Gandhi, and it is no accident that he believes India’s greatest strength is its diversity.
Also read: Salman Khan’s Eid release Bharat finally has him play a character his age — a 70-year-old
Nelson Mandela inspired me, he says. So did the Dalai Lama. “You listen to him and realise how simply he sees the world. The first instinct of all these great men,” he tells ThePrint, “is and was always humane and emotional.”
It’s a message he hopes will reach every last person in the line buying tickets for Salman Khan’s films; and the star clearly trusts him enough to do what is asked of him, whether it is putting on weight to play an out-of-shape boxer on his way to redemption in Sultan or switching from a motorcycle to a horseback to a battered sedan to escape an ISI militant in a town called Ikrit in Tiger Zinda Hai.
Or, play a character embodying the nation in his new film. “Tujh main poora Bharat hai beta,” says his father to a young Salman in Bharat. He asks him to take care of his family, and Salman does precisely that over 70 years of change in India – watching over events from Jawaharlal Nehru’s death to the liberalisation of the Indian economy and its asli hero, Manmohan Singh, along the way working on an oil rig in the Arabian desert, and fighting Somali pirates on the high seas.
Sitting in the atrium of Yash Raj Studios, which has been his home since 2008, Zafar says: “The nation is one big family and by contributing to it, you are contributing to the nation. To say this with a superstar with a mass mainstream following is challenging”.
And so, he focuses on what is humane – Salman as an oil rig worker fights with the American supervisor over quality of food, or the young orphan in the refugee camp in 1947 who refuses to go to Pakistan though he is a Muslim because his father fought for India’s freedom. “I am not interested in propagating one party’s goodness over another. I am interested in remaining true to my characters, to use their narrative to understand the times we are in,” says Zafar. “And I want to leave everyone with hope,” he adds.
So, if Salman played the classic underdog in Sultan, who was fighting the demons within, in Tiger Zinda Hai, he took on an enemy who was threatening to destroy the world with his evil ideology and who could be fought only by uniting India and Pakistan’s forces.
The idea for Bharat came from Salman, says Zafar, who loved the South Korean film, Ode to my Father (2014), and wanted him to adapt it. “I think what appealed to Salman was the idea of one man looking out for his family,” says Zafar, which is similar to the star’s own life.
Zafar’s worldview was cemented by his three years at the Kirori Mal College, not so much because of the course, but because of his involvement with its much-feted dramatic society, The Players. He staged a play annually in college. From then on, working in films was his only obsession.
He was the runner in Lakshya (2004) for 10 days when the Farhan Akhtar film was shot in Delhi, and then assisted Shonali Bose on her film Amu (2005), based on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. “That’s when I realised the power of cinema to effect social change, how it can create tremendous social consciousness and how it can happen at both ends of the spectrum, from Satyajit Ray to Yash Chopra,” he says.
So, he packed his bags and came to Mumbai to work as an assistant director on Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom (2007) and has never looked back. Quizmaster Siddhartha Basu, who was cast in Tiger Zinda Hai, says: “Zafar’s sensibility is grounded in the progressive stream of large canvas commercial cinema, and he’s been developing his story-telling abilities to match that. His focus, discipline and patience have helped him juggle the pulls and pressures of handling big-ticket projects with challenging stakeholders while remaining steadfast to the integrity of his vision”. No small feat in the Hindi film industry.
Zafar credits Aditya Chopra, movie director and chairman of Yash Raj Films, for allowing him the freedom to find his own distinct voice, especially in an environment which has become severely critical of everything. After experimenting with his vision in Mere Brother ki Dulhan (2011) and Gunday (2014), he felt he found his artistic ideal in Sultan.
What is unique about Zafar is also his collaboration with Salman. He believes the 53-year-old’s fans want to celebrate when they see his movies. “They see him as an instant energiser, like a bottle of soda who will douse them with his fizz. They don’t want to be disoriented. I believe there is a very beautiful actor under the skin of the superstar,” says Zafar. “His first instinct is always that of an actor and I have often asked him to do things, which reveal his vulnerabilities. As a director, you cannot judge your actor. You have to be like a parent, take care of the actor while he or she is on the set, between action and cut.”
Salman and he communicate silently, says Zafar, “usually through our eyes”. “We talk only when we have to. We are honest with each other and yes, we do have differences of opinion at times. Sometimes I let him prevail, sometimes he lets me prevail,” he says. But the rise and fall of movies should not affect relationships, he adds, perhaps alluding to rumours of a divide between him and Salman on the final cut of Bharat.
Zafar lives quietly amid the hurly-burly of Bollywood. He is single, obsessed with his travel, his reading, watching TV, and playing sports. “I keep my personal and professional life separate. I don’t try to be anyone’s buddy. I was raised in an isolated way and left home when I was very young. When I am part of a filmmaking team of 200 people, I realise I have to be a team player, but once I am done, I am off,” he says.
No doubt, to think about and create the next blockbuster.

Part 2:★ Highest Grosser of the Year from 1947 to 1989: Dilip Kumar’s dominance, Dharmendra’s longevity, Amitabh Bachchan’s mega stardom and Salman Khan’s entry!
Dec 25, 2020
In the first part of highest grosser of the year series, Bollywood Hungama did an in-depth analysis of the actors with maximum highest grossing film of the year spanning 73 years from 1947 to 2020. While Salman Khan was crowned the biggest Bollywood superstar since independence with 10 highest grosser of the year, Dilip Kumar bagged the second spot with 9 films in the list, whereas Aamir Khan was third with 7 films in the list. The top three stars contributed 26 of the total 73 highest grosser of the year, which in percentage terms is 35%. In the second part of the series, we come up with a detailed decade by decade analysis of stars fighting for the top spot in the respective decades. The part 2 is a decade by decade analysis from 1957 to 1989.
1980 to 1989 - Dilip Kumar’s comeback,  Amitabh Bachchan’s stability and a record entry for Saman Khan
80’s was a rather mixed bag, as no actor was consistent in delivering the highest grosser of the year. While Dilip Kumar made a comeback to acting after a sabbatical, and delivered 3 highest grossers of the year in the second innings of his career with Kranti (1981), Vidhaata (1982) and Karma (1986) the rest of the year was a mixed bag with Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Jeetendra, Dharmendra delivering one highest grosser of the year each.
However, 80’s will always be remembered for the debut of two megastars, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. While Aamir Khan made his debut with a hit film and built up an image from there, probably the first time in Bollywood history came an actor who made his debut with a highest grosser of the year, and following that, there was no stopping him. Yes, we are talking about Salman Khan, whose debut film, Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989) was not just the highest grossing film of the year, but also, the biggest grosser of the decade.
Stay tuned for part 3 of the highest grosser of the year series, as we take you through the Shah Rukh Khan phenomenon, the Hrithik Roshan impact, the Aamir Khan consistency and the Salman Khan stardom with a strong comeback.
