scorpion's heart
Sometimes while thinking about TBHK thoughts will run through my head that I realize aren't universal among the fandom. I have actually touched upon this topic before, but I still wanted to make a quick post for the uninformed about an official parallel drawn between Tsukasa and a moment in a beloved piece of Japanese literature.
Night on the Galactic Railroad is a classic Japanese novel often taught in Japanese classrooms, similar to how English classics will often be taught in the Anglosphere. It's well known in Japan for this reason, and for the sake of this post I'll assume you either haven't heard of it or that you don't know much about it. Regardless, this post is centering on only a small portion of the novel, so you won't come away from it with a total understanding of what it's all about. I encourage you to check it out yourself!
As you might be able to tell by the name, the story involves a boy riding a train through a fantastical version of outerspace. During his trip through the cosmos, he meets others riding the train. One of these people tells him the story of Antares, the brightest star in the constellation Scorpio. Already there is one connection to the story of Hanako-kun, that being Amane's infamous monologue about the star during the Picture Perfect arc.
The story goes as follows: a scorpion was being chased by a weasel. In a last ditch effort to escape the weasel, it threw itself into a well. But the scorpion had no means of escape, and realized it was going to die there. The scorpion bemoans this fate, because as a predator it has only ever taken life away. It regrets not taking the chance to help the weasel, even if it would only help the weasel live a single day longer. And now the scorpion is going to die having helped no one.
So it prays to God, and asks that its body be used to bring happiness to everyone. And as if God had heard its plea, the scorpion's body burst into a brilliant red flame. This same light is said to be the star Antares, the heart of the Scorpio constellation.
...so! Already somewhat superficially you can compare this story to Tsukasa and the Red House. Little guy jumps into hole/well,
Tumblr media
little guy makes a wish to a God to bring happiness to others,
Tumblr media
little guy bursts into flames...
Tumblr media
Personally I find these alone to be staggering similarities, but it leaves you asking: What is the significance of this?
Well, I tend to interpret it as a reflection of Tsukasa's selflessness. I think Tsukasa's intentions as a child were very pure. But later on it seems like this selflessness distorts into something else, something more twisted. Regardless, Tsukasa's motivations involve destroying himself for other people's happiness. His own destruction will bring happiness to Sakura (she needs all the yorishiro to be destroyed to have her wish granted) and also Amane, who has a wish of his own he wants granted.
Anyway, besides Amane comparing himself to Antares in Picture Perfect, we also have this official Night on the Galactic Railroad AU art with Tsukasa bearing the tail of the scorpion:
Tumblr media
Note the red flame on the tip of his stinger. (And most importantly note his cuteness. 🦂🔥❤️)
Touching briefly upon Amane's Antares story in Picture Perfect, there aren't many obvious comparisons to draw between it and Night on the Galactic Railroad. However, one thing I'll touch upon is how Antares is a binary star, or a "twin star." It being a binary star isn't talked about in Night on the Galactic Railroad, but Amane mentions it. He also mentions how you can't normally see its twin. This is because its twin is a main sequence star, much less bright than the red supergiant Antares. It was only ever discovered that Antares had a twin when the moon covered the red supergiant and an astromer spotted the main sequence star beside it. Perhaps Amane and Tsukasa are supposed to represent the red flame of Antares in different ways, but it does make me wonder if Amane is meant to represent the little main sequence star too, since Tsukasa is very clearly the red flame in this story. But considering Amane's analysis of Antares is so much more scientific than the fantastical version seen in Night on the Galactic Railroad, I think it's safer to regard these as fundamentally separate stories. Still fun to consider however.
But if we did want to talk about the scientific implications of Tsukasa being Antares, I'd bring up how red supergiants often become black holes, almost the antithesis of what the scorpion wanted to become. The scorpion wanted to bring light and happiness to everyone, but a black hole only devours and destroys, just the thing the scorpion didn't want to be anymore. I don't think Tsukasa started in the same place as the scorpion, who regretted its life of selfishness... but it makes me wonder if he's meant to be the anti-scorpion: a selfless being becoming a black hole of destruction. That's a very sad way of looking at things, but it's hard not to think of it when we see what's happened to him in the series as a whole:
Tumblr media
In the context of Night on the Galactic Railroad, the scorpion is regarded as a selfless hero. Although another character expresses distastes for dangerous creatures like the scorpion, the character who tells the Antares story argues that the scorpion is a fundamentally good creature. It's another one of those little things in Hanako-kun that reminds me that Tsukasa, for all his faults, has good inside him too. But it does leave me wondering how far this comparison will go, and what that means for Tsukasa's fate. Will he continue to sacrifice himself till the end? And will that sacrifice be for the good of everyone, or only a few?
My favorite part about all this is there's no answer! It's just a fun comparison AidaIro made that helps recontextualize Tsukasa's character. Is this a meaningful comparison, or just a surface-level one? Will his story end the same way as the scorpion, or will he subvert expectations? Who knows! I mostly just think back on it and remember that Tsukasa started as an extremely selfless character that still displays these traits in the manga today, even as a nefarious ghost. Maybe he is isn't misunderstood like the scorpion, but he's certainly just as tragic. Thanks for reading!

Sakura has a very predictable routine. She wakes up and takes her shower at 4am. By 5am, she's already dressed and and eating her half burnt egg sandwich, she always forgets about the bread. By 6:30am, she's already at the train station waiting for the 7am train to come. Well...it is now seven and the train has not come yet.
"Damnit I'm gonna be late! Tsunade is going to kill me..."
No one is around except a tall bright blonde man sitting a few feet away from her. He had his head down, dozing off maybe, with his air pods in.
She always sees him at 6:55, always late but somehow never missing the train, and usually goes to the back on the train while she stays near the front. Even though she sees him every morning, this is the first time she's taken a good look. He's actually kind of cute.
Its 7:10 when she decides to walk towards him. Even though she stood right in front of him, his head was still down and his pods were blasting. Sakura huffed and tapped him on his shoulder. The man jumped at her touch and sat back wide-eyed.
"I'm sorry for scaring you! I just...see you on the same train sometimes so I wanted to ask if you know why our train hasn't come yet..."
He just stared at her with those bright blue eyes.
"Hello...?"
The man blinked a couple times before he face turned a bright red. "Y-Yes! Ah...the train! It uh...they said earlier when you checked in that it would be delayed until 7:30."
It was Sakura's turn to look at him wide-eyed. "7:30?! I have to get to work by 8!" Sakura sighed and put her hand into her hands. "I guess I have no choice."
Sakura sighed for the third time and sat next to the blonde. "I'm...Sakura by the way."
The man took out his air pods and turned to her. "I'm Naruto. And...you said you always see me?"
"Ah yeah," she chuckled. "You're always running to the train at 6:55."
"Oh...yeah. And the one time I come early," he gestures the the empty railroad. "But that's okay. You're...good company."
Sakura looked at him surprised. "Oh? That hold this early in the morning?"
"I-I mean you're nice to talk to since you know we see each other on the train and....stuff."
"Uh huh..."
They talked for a good 20 minutes more before the sound of a horn interrupted their conversation. It was the train.
Sakura looked at her phone and saw that it was 7:30 on the dot. "Finally, the train is here!" Sakura got on her feet gathering her stuff.
"Well, it was nice meeting you, Sakura-chan."
She turned to him. "Sakura-chan?"
"If you don't like it then-" she stopped him.
"Oh no it's fine. I like it." She smiled at him. His face started to heat up once again.
"Now, you're gonna sit with me on the train, right?"
Naruto, red face and all, only nodded. He gathered his stuff and followed behind her.

it feels as if we'll be getting Natsuhiko lore soon ? so much art featuring him as of late.....
I don't know what Natsuhiko/Sakura's deal is ... for the Night on the Galactic Railroad AU, Natsuhiko is the man who captures herons to turn into candy, and Sakura is a heron. A thing he pursues.
Tumblr media
In another AU, Sakura is ? some sort of ? hen ? associated ? woman ? and Natsuhiko is a ? wolf ?
Tumblr media
in Ghost Hotel, she's a woman seemingly trapped in sleep, while Natsuhiko is a . frankenstein, singing to her ??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in Hanako of the Opera he's simply a tenor singer while Sakura is a teacher ....
Natsuhiko has a weird tiny crown on his head always, I have no idea if it is hair or an object. its even in the simplest image, like above, so it's a feature essential to him.
in Hanako of the Opera he's simply a tenor singer while Sakura is a teacher ....
this has been: a post (?)

Was super curious as to why this exists, so lets find out!
The obvious answer ofc: the Wikipedia page of Kagami Yoshimizu, the author of Lucky Star, lists him as doing the cover for an edition of Nietzsche's Words for Young People:
Words for Young People (若き人々への言葉, Wakaki Hitobito no Kotoba) (cover illustration, by Friedrich Nietzsche, Kadokawa Shoten, 2011)
Straightforward so far, right? But still, *why* is a real question. Kadokawa does stuff like this all the time actually - Japan's 'collector book culture' is very large, way larger than it is in the US, special cover editions by famed artists is a very common occurrence. And in June of 2011 we have the -
Tumblr media
God dammit, and the internet archive isn't any help either due to shenanigans w/ frikkin Flash. Anyway, blogs to the rescue!
Tumblr media
This entry details the "Discovery! Kadokawa Bunko 2011" Summer Fair, where you amoung other things win adorable keychains related to cooling down - totally buyable off Yahoo Auctions still if that is your thing.
But in addition to that, 5 'collectors' versions of classic books were released to encourage participation in the festival, featuring art by different manga artists. We have:
Anne of Green Gables" Cover Illustration by Kiyohiko Azuma "Words for Young People" Cover illustration by Kagami Yoshimizu Yi Ling, Shan Tsuki Ki, Disciples, and Biographies of the Great Masters" Cover illustration by Asagi Sakura Greek and Roman Mythology: A Complete Translation" Cover illustration by Mari Yamazaki Night on the Galactic Railroad" Cover Illustration: Kohaku Kuroboshi
Funnily enough the rest of them did art a bit more aligned with the source material. Kiyohiko Azuma, for example, is the author of Azumanga Daioh, but his cover looks like this:
Tumblr media
Yoshimizu is just a renowned troll and so just drew Konata in a castle because you aren't the boss of me I do what I want. Which is ofc why this book got tiny amounts of traction in the english-speaking internet, removed from its wider context.
If you want to see a little more of the book btw, there are a few more Konata's on the cover flap and under the obi:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is Konata doin on a cover of a Nietzsche book, why was the creator of lucky star commissioned to do art for a Nietzsche book

10 thoughts about Japan (Osaka to be Specific)
WARNING: there are too much amazement here!
Tumblr media
                                               Garden Koko-en, Himeji
They don't really know how to express their care to the foreigners verbally but with their facilities, you’ll see, they care BIG TIME! First of all they made the AC centralized! Haha.. It was 8degrees when the plane landed at Kansai International airport. Woah! I only got two jackets, I wasn’t expecting Japan to be that cold, I’ve checked the weather beforehand but still I’ve never experienced that before...It was summer in the Philippines (March 25, 2017) yet it’s so cold in Japan. I guess it is called tail of winter and early spring though. I was really not prepared; in fact I have brought a flip flops & citronella lotion. Hahah (summery feels!) Apparently I wasn’t able to use those. It’s too cold for those mosquitos to fly around Japan, they can’t because they have thick jackets as well, but the truth is they all died!
Still about the facilities, let’s talk about the comfort rooms. Toilet bowls have buttons for washing uranus, haha..really designed for pooping and as I have seen, mall toilets seemed like wifi connected cause there’s a wifi symbol on screen. So high tech! I couldn’t miss the experience so I tried it! hahah 😊 😊 😊 The comfort room will definitely give you comfort!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
                                                  at Piole Mall Himeji
3. Wide sidewalks, it’s obvious that they prioritized safety for the pedestrians and drivers inside their vehicles are courteous, when green lights turn they wait few seconds before they go. (Now imagine that situation in Manila, some drivers are just so impatient and rude). Okay too much of comparing, bad vibes are starting to cover up my feel good mood right now for this Japan review. Hihi. I’d loved to mention I did not experience traffic congestion at all on my stay there.
Tumblr media
4. Vendo capital. You’ll find vendo machines on almost every side of roads and railroads. You will never get thirsty; you’ll find variety of drinks from water to juices to sodas, (vendo kaya ng mga uhaw sa pag ibig meron?) LOL. Fare for train, vendo. Fare for buses, vendo. Open parking spaces, vendo, they don’t hire guards.
5. Safe place. Even if I had put my wallet in the front pocket of my bag pack, there’s no thief. My friend’s bag’s zip tends to open most of the time, I just told myself "great that we are not in Manila.". Houses have small gates or none, Japanese’ knows they’re safe.
Tumblr media
                                                       Hyogo, Kobe
6. Super clean environment and disciplined locals. There are trash bins for bottles, papers, some for left overs and for other garbages. No one’s littering. After eating at a restaurant people will dispose or bring back to the counter what they’ve used (utensils), so a crew will just have to wipe the tables. :) At the streets I saw some dogs being walked, one pooped, but the owner has a plastic bag on his hand and grabbed it. 😅
Tumblr media
                                                         Dotonburi
7.  Cool architecture. House exteriors are so cute, simple and ideal. Buildings have PVC exterior walls, I’ve knocked on to curiosity, interiors are plywood, I think those are assembled house, only stairs and roof deck were made of concrete, well I believe columns and beams as well. Even comfort rooms, toilet, wall, tub and floor were built altogether, so they would just install them quick. I loved the accordion door at the apartment I stayed in it made me want to take that home. 😂 Also I had time to go to a children playground, I’ve notice even the high storey houses have PVC exteriors but looks like concrete. Cool!
Tumblr media
8. Fashion city. I think I belong there, it seemed like every street is a runway, they don’t care about what people may say, whatever outfits they wear they never run out of fashion sense, skirt over leggings, long skirts, loose jeans, boots, knee high socks, hair dresses. From babies to oldies, they soooo cute!!!! ♥
9. FOODS! I loveeet!!! Sushi, grilled eel, oyster, takoyaki, chocolates, ice creams, all that I’ve eaten there were sooo oishi! Worth the expensiveness! 😂 😂

10. The spending. Japan has a high cost of living, as shown on their bodies because they choose to walk and bike. I spent more on foods and transportations, well those were the things I’ve only got to spend onto. My train fare ranges from 160-970yen (x .44 for php), taxi costs 1000yen and above.
11. Oops I am making it 11 because this is the one thing I’ve really liked about experiencing the country. You'll hear "arigato" everywhere; I didn’t even heard one uttered "bakero". Japanese' are always grateful that’s why they are successful. Beautiful people. ❤️ Try to walk around the streets of Philippines, what are you hearing?

two of my goals there, to have a picture with a pure Japanese and to see a cherry blossom. Too bad I wasn't able to prepare a good camera. I have borrowed my friend's phone but she sent the pics through facebook and quality diminished. :(
BUT I am probably coming back! ❤️
