A star scattered January night, the weaving narrow road shepherded us to a friends low lying bungalow encircled by coffee estate on all sides, jute beige and cherry red – desolate, lined with golden trumpet wines and a lone Norfolk pine which almost touches the sky.

All night the steady swish of tropical downpour had been drumming on the clay tile roof, I had opened the window wide to allow the fragrance of rain-drenched earth to drift into my room, and snug myself on the cot with a woolen quilt and slid into a peaceful sleep.⁣

⁣

The next morning I woke up to the birds call, I looked out from my rain tattered windows, dawn was breaking, the monsoons showers made the outdoors look as inviting as ever, I stood in front of the window, and gazed across the landscape that surrounded the house. The thickly forested mountain hid the waterfall in it, I had never seen the waterfall with my own eyes, but from my friend I had heard of it, of its rocks and currents and the forest surrounding it, and it only remained for me to feel the water and know it personally.⁣

⁣I began to climb the mountain, I was barefooted; because I feel free and I like to feel the wet grass and rain-drenched earth under my feet. I traversed through paddy fields, plains, and streams until there were no more fields or huts, only forest, rain, and solitude. From here on it was the feral wilderness.⁣

⁣After a while I stopped and looked around, there were no men, and no signs of mans influence, only the wild and silence. The dark foliage around me was enveloped in white fog.⁣⁣ After about 20 mins of walk the path started to rise, and I could hear the gushing of the stream and I began to run until I plunged into the cold sharp mountain water. The water was cascading down the steep moss-covered rocks, it was white, cold and wonderful, except for the locals no one else had discovered this paradise of wild and green things.⁣

The leeches had fastened themselves onto my leg and feasted on my blood. But it was worth it tramping through the forest to feast my eyes on the glorious waterfall and foliage that surrounded it.⁣

An hour or so in the waterfall, I forced myself out of it even though my thirst of feeing the mountain water hadn’t quenched and I started to head back, after a few mins of walk as I rounded a sharp bend, I heard a twig snap and I gasped with anxiety and fear, I stopped and slowly started to examine my surrounding, suddenly all my senses began to heighten and I start to look over my left shoulder, as I turn from left to right, I caught a sniff of the strong pungent scent of the elephant, a moment later I spot a wild tusker in the ravine down to my right. I turn my upper body towards him and made this picture and as I was turning the camera off, a sharp trumpet sent shivers down my spine.⁣⁣

I threw a cloth in front of me and I turned back and started to brisk walk the opposite way. After I created a safe enough distance between me and the elephant, I found the courage and turned around and saw, he hadn’t moved a step, he was not interested in charging at me or even do a mock charge, his trumpet was just of his annoyance at being disturbed, as it was an unexpected encounter in a blind curve.⁣

Throwing a part of clothing in the opposite direction is a good way to distract an elephant, as it has a very keen sense of smell.⁣

⁣ Only if the elephant twiddles his trunk and swings his legs to and fro he's deciding between retreat and attack only during this time must you start running before they complete their thought process or you can just walk away respecting its space.⁣⁣

⁣⁣These kinds of encounters are likely to happen if you're driving or walking on foot in wild India. Knowledge of animal behavior often saves your life. ⁣⁣

⁣ps : I got back to the waterfall and spent another hour or so until the elephant moved else where and picked up the towel (I stayed back just to pick up the cloth which I threw away) DON’T TRASH.
