Hello, hello, my lovelies! Since I've gotten zero bites for asks for my other non-KHR/K fandoms, I'm going to host a little special event before my box reopens (after I finish writing fic and have posts done for all my fandoms) and I have another big event! So, this is how it's going to work!

I have exactly 42 fandoms, if I'm counting right. Below you'll find all 42 fandoms listed. Under those fandoms, you'll find a list of 42 AU's. I'll accept 1 request per fandom and one request per AU. For example, if someone requests KHR and mermaids, for example, I'll cross out both KHR and Mermaids and neither the fandom nor the AU can be requested for anymore. It's first come, first serve and I'll do my best to keep the lists up-to-date with requests. This event will close when all prompts and fandoms are taken. 5 headcanons for a Saiyuki AU where Goku gets send back in time to his younger body. It's up to you if this happens before or after the 500 years of imprisonment, but it's definitely before the main events of Saiyuki canon. Thank you!

Ugh, choices, choices. If I pick Goku in the heaven era, odds are that he isn't remembering a thing? If I pick Goku a little before the main events, he knows stuff but he will have to go through several years of solitary confinement, at the very least, and it's the one thing I don't want to do to him.

You know what? Seiten Taisei ex machina!

1 - So, for some reasons, when Goku is sent back in time to his younger body, his diadem was off. (I am going to guess that he was too powerful to be neutralized in any of the usual ways so the collision of several sutras that were used to banish him sent him back in time.) When he wakes up, he is in heaven, he has just recovered all of his memories, and he is freaking out. Also, he is weaker and smaller, which isn't cool.

2 - This is not a "Goku remembers the future the first time he sees Konzen and starts crying" or something story. This is a story where Konzen woke up in the middle of the night then screamed because Goku was standing over the edge of the bed, looking at him with golden eyes that slightly glow in the dark. Once Konzen recovers from a very literal heart attack (he's a god, he will be fine), Goku, who is more serious that Konzen has ever seen him, informs him Tenpou, Kenren and the both of them need to leave Heaven about yesterday. The mortal world is lovely this time of the year. Also, they are kidnapping... bringing Nataku along with them.

3 - Once Goku recovers from the paper fan-induced-concussion of all paper-fan-induced concussions, Konzen is actually worried about him? That is completely unlike Goku, after all. He talks about it with Kenren and Tenpou and they kinda assume that the stress of living among a bunch of asshole gods is starting to get to Goku. Tenpou argues that a vacation might be good for Goku but Konzen says he can't just drop everything.

4 - I know the exact way Konzen snaps. This is a very quiet snap, btw. He is complaining to Tenpou about Goku who keeps telling him they need to relocate NOW and while they are walking, a god who isn't talking softly enough is "Yes, the new heretic one would make a good war god to counterbalance Li Touten's power." Konzen doesn't say anything. He just turns heels, grabs Goku, and they are out, with Tenpou and Kenren trailing after them (Nataku is hidden under Kenren's coat, he has been waiting YEARS for an occasion to kidnap himself a new little brother, it's ON).

5 - So obviously, half of heaven gets really mad about it and send people after them. Said people get utterly obliterated since pretty much no one except for Tenpou and Kenren has fought any battles since Nataku's birth. Also, Nataku and Goku are very OP. About a century of shenanigans ensue where Homura is catapulted as the new prince of war and tasked with the very undignified task of chasing after them. He tries to find some common ground with Goku about both of them being heretics and talks a lot but Goku absolutely doesn't care. Also, Goujun always ends up as the traitors' hostage. They do not take him hostage. The universe decides that he will be the hostage of Goku and co. He is really tired.

+ 1 - I don't know who it will be but someone will adopt Bear Nataku.

Monthly Minekura Christmas edition

Day 25 “Swapped” (FREE)

Final piece of this cool and amazing monthly event that helped me to boost my self-confidence in digital painting especially when it comes to backgrounds. Since the prompt of this day is free, I decided to digitalize an old piece made in 2014 when I first started to draw Saiyuki characters for the first time. This draw is pure non-sense XD I would shit bricks if I saw a Ukoku-headed jungle crow but I wouldn't mind a jungle crow-headed Ukoku, lol. The whole subject doesn't have any particular meaning, the only notable thing is the Buddhist temple in the background which is Dafo Temple in Xinchang County, a county in the east-central part of Zhejiang province. This is the photo reference I used and I discovered that I love drawing and painting traditional Chinese architecture, plus I discovered several temples I want to visit when I plan to visit China.

The temple has a long history of more than 1600 years. Dafo Temple is constructed with five levels with several halls like the Heavenly King Hall, the Big Buddha Hall and the Scripture Hall. The Big Buddha is almost 15 meters in height, its nose alone is 1.5 meters and ears are 2.7 meters in size. There is also a grotto, several Buddha statues, a waterfall and a petrified forest. I was unsure if drawing the petrified forest instead of the temple entrance for the background but I couldn't resist to paint those vivid colours.

Fun fact: during the Cultural Revolution, locals covered the giant Buddha statues in the temple with pictures of Mao Zedong that managed to prevent the fanatic red guards from destroying the sacred statues, because they believed that all old traditions should be destroyed.

I deeply thank you locals for preserving such gem from human stupidity, thank you!

"Oh my, thank you for letting me know. There was such a chaos around the disappearance and returning of the city, it was impossible to look over all the news... I'm really disappointed that nobody bothered to tell me that my daughter was in such grave danger.

"Honestly, this really makes me question my decision to leave her in Achefall. When I had to go to my long trip, I reasoned that consistency was too important to take her out of school and bring her to another country, so I decided to leave her at the care of my staff, despite knowing that I'd miss her dearly every day. But thinking about how the city is under a constant siege of supervillains, maybe it was a bad decision. It must be shocking enough for her that I was victimized by Riodinidae, but now she has to deal with all those treacherous events without me being there to support her.

"Well, I'm afraid it's too late now, I can't go back for her any time soon. Maybe I should consider homeschooling though. It would be much easier to keep her safe that way, and I could pay closer attention to her studies too. Akimoto Academy is a prestigious school for a reason, but there's always room for improvement, right?"

The man behind the voice: Horiuchi Ken'yū

I previously wrote about how, in a roundabout way, Saiyuki was my main gateway to BL. But, in a more direct way, Saiyuki plays a large influence on which BL Drama CDs I tend to listen to. Thanks to a kind soul who has compiled a directory of BL Drama CDs with the voice actors (VAs) as the index, it is very convenient to download those Drama CDs based on the VAs playing the romantic leads in the Drama CDs.

There are two characters in Saiyuki whose VAs I became a big fan of. I now have tons of their Drama CDs on a few hard drives, one USB thumbstick, my phone and my tablet. This post is about one of them, the funny guy and BL legend who played... *drumrolls* the Great Zakuro.

In some ways, Horiuchi Ken'yū the VA is just as silly and dramatic as Zakuro. Did you know that

he once asked the VA of Ni Jianyi / Ukoku to sell him a copy of the script because he had mistakenly brought a telephone directory instead to the recording session? (click on CC button for EN subtitles)

he is notorious for making up ridiculous and yet inventive excuses for being late to recording sessions?

The second video is not subtitled, but here’s my quick and rough translation regarding the ‘excuses’:

Excuse #1: He saved an old lady by extricating her from a spider’s web. He admitted to both actually giving this excuse and that it was a lie (obviously). Also, although he made up this one excuse under pressure, he said that this was the origin of his reputation for inventing ridiculous excuses for not being on time.

Excuse #2: He got stung on the head by a rhinoceros beetle. He claimed that this one was actually true.

Excuse #3: A goat ate his copy of the script. He denied ever giving this one. According to him, it was the director who remarked, “Seems like goat ate your copy of the script, eh?” Finding it bothersome to contradict the director, he simply responded, “Yes, sorry [for being late].”

He was also one of the leads in the Radio Pastel Collection and co-hosts of Live Pastel Collection events. Being an old fart myself, I just can’t help wax nostalgic about how young everyone looked in those bilibili videos. *sighs”

My favorite BL Drama CDs in which he appears as the main lead:

Takarara Hadaka (Vibrator Company). You can find the scanlations of the manga here. The second half of the story depicted in the Drama CD begins in Chapter 3 (Page 61).

Open Sesame. Trigger warning: sexual abuse, multiple personality disorder. Although I must say that the real star here is Miki Shin’ichiro, who must be having the time of his life playing the multiple personalities: a child, a woman, a thug and a seemingly normal young man, on top of the main personality, an erratic actor.

Shinjuku Lucky Hole. A couple who founded a gay porn studio. Scanlations of the manga here.

Of course, Horiuchi Ken'yū seems to be pretty famous for mainstream and non-BL stuff, though I have scant idea what they are, since I don’t watch much anime or listen to Drama CDs from other genres such as otome.

Gyokumen Koushu/Rooftop

Gyokumen Koushu stumbles across the eerie rooms and liminal corridors. The castle is filled with skeletons and petrified stone. She almost slips her balance, nearly toppling over the stairwell. Her instincts force her to sit, an arm around her gravid belly. The sensation is strange. One moment, she had been cowering in her room, hiding from the heavenly light and the clashing thunder of weapons. Next, she woke up covered in dust on a rotting bed frame. She forced herself up, knees and ankles aching with each step up the floors until she reached the throne room.

Her Emperor was bound on his throne with layers upon layers of seals. The Empress and the Crown Prince hung on the pillars on each side. The Emperor was at his true colossal size, so enormous that she barely reached his ankle.

Her breath seized, tears springing at the corner of her eyes. She gasped. The only thing she pulled in was dust.

She closed a fist around her own throat as she choked in fear.

Suddenly, her vision plunged into darkness. 

Just as suddenly, her vision cleared, and all she could see was blue.

Blue — so clear and bright that it seared her eyes.

She turned and she saw him.

A human, a Sanzo priest with dark hair and darker eyes.

“Aah… I didn’t think I could negate a heavenly seal.” He said, amusement painting his features.

With all the elegance of a court lady, Gyokumen Koushu pulled herself up on her feet and, on the castle rooftop, greeted her destiny.

Saiyuki boys (Hakkai, Goku, Gojyo and Sanzo) tumblr

I love reading your headcannons about them! 💖💖

I had so much fun imagining and writing this ask. It amused me greatly and I really appreciate the request, anon dear! I hope you’ll enjoy the headcanons!

Sanzo

So, I’ve always headcanoned Sanzo to have a lot of ‘old man’ traits and high among them is the fact that he’s really not all that technologically gifted. At all, really. He just doesn’t understand how to use technology and he doesn’t spend a lot of time on the internet. He really only has a tumblr because the others, especially Goku, would have bothered him into getting one. Even then, he doesn’t really use it often and he often forgets he even has one. It can be months between him logging in.

He doesn’t really understand how to use themes and even has trouble figuring out how to put an avatar up and he’s definitely not going to think to ask the others for help, half because he doesn’t really care and half because he has his pride so his tumblr is so very basic. His tumblr handle is leavemealonealready, but his blog doesn’t have a title or anything notable about it.

He follows Goku, Hakkai, and Gojyo because they make him but other than that, he doesn’t follow too many people, mostly just tumblrs dedicated to cute animals (he definitely follows dogposts and only-cat-memes). He doesn’t do the whole follow-back thing. He’s also horrible for never reblogging and only liking things.

Hakkai

Tumblr is very much a Hakkai thing and he’s probably actually the one to not only have gotten the others into it, but to use it the most. If the Saiyuki universe had tumblr, I could definitely see Hakkai scrolling through his dash whenever he got bored, though I don’t think he creates original posts often.

He does put a lot of thought into his tumblr handle, blog title, theme, avatar, and the general overall aesthetic of his tumblr. His handle would be almost hipster!like, something like ‘thelostlenore’ or ‘thepathlesstravelled’ and his avatar changes from something scenic and pretty to pictures of Jeep. He prefers his tumblr themes clean and minimal, good for both pictures and text, something like Hazy by vitaminholland. He purposefully chooses not to title his blog.

I feel like he follows a lot of people. Not only does he like a lot of blogs, follow a lot of tags, and just have a general interest in various areas, but he does do the kind thing of following people who follow him. I do think he has a few fandoms that he would be into and that he would follow tumblrs related to those fandoms, along with some generally aesthetic fandoms (especially academia!aesthetic blogs). He’s also really interested in intellectual things and would follow tumblrs of that nature, such as philosophybits, scienceisdope, etc. He also would follow some positivity focused tumblrs, just because everyone needs a pick-me-up sometimes.

Goku

Goku is the one I can see using tumblr the most after Hakkai. Hakkai has to show him how to work it but he catches on pretty quickly. His handle is songokueats and he mostly posts a lot of pictures of his food or funny pictures he snaps of the others getting into embarrassing moments. He titles his tumblr very simply, just calling it ‘Goku’s tumblr’ and his avatar is either a picture of food or an embarrassing photo of Sanzo or Gojyo until they make him take it down. He’s not really all that picky about his tumblr theme, with his only requisite being that it’s colourful and fun so I can see him using something like colorful space or Bitter Fruit.

Other than Sanzo, Goku follows the least amount of people. He follows the others, of course, but other than that, he mainly just follows a lot of food blogs and just kind of browses tags whenever he gains interest in something. He’d be the one to get really into the tumblr memes though and would overuse them.

He really likes to talk to people and online is no different. I could see him using the dm feature the most out of the four of them.

Gojyo

I think overall, if the world of Saiyuki had social media, Gojyo would prefer dating apps, Instagram, and TikTok and, while he’d have a tumblr, it would be hit or miss if he thinks to check it. It’s not his first choice for apps.

I think he was probably really into it at first and he did put thought into it. He uses a very image-centric theme, something dark and minimalistic but stylish, and the only posts he has up are images, usually selfies and usually of the thirst trap variety. His tumblr handle is l@vvrboi and his blog title is Too Hot to Handle, with his avatar being a selfie, of course.

He does do follow for follow and he does follow a fair amount of blogs, anything smutty or erotic, some cute animal blogs, along with a few advice blogs because he’s got a guilty pleasure for those kinds of things. He’s really susceptible, just saying, to clicking on pornbot links.

2. First ship: Gojo x Hakkai(Saiyuki) Wow I can't remember, but this is probably the first ship that I created fanart for, that wasn't from a "BL" manga.

Worldbuilding: A Matter of Timing

One problem we have with handling history in our heads is how it’s taught. I grant you, there is so much history out there, we have to find ways to divide it up or we couldn’t learn any of it.

The problem is, most people don’t teach you anything about how to put it back together.

Too often history is only taught as “this sequence of events happened, and these people ruled, in this particular region”. We almost never get a book, or a course, that takes the time to pull back and say, “while X was happening over here, Y was happening in this completely different place. And here are some reasons they may be connected....”

I write, so here’s a literary example. The Chinese writer Wu Cheng’en wrote (and/or compiled from various preexisting tales) and published the Journey to the West in 1592, in the late Ming Dynasty.

If you’re an anime or manga fan, you may be more familiar with that as the basis for Dragonball Z or Saiyuki. I have a particular fondness for Saiyuki, with a cranky, gun-toting Sanzo and all that insane crew. I like to think if Wu Cheng’en had the chance to take in that modern version, he’d crack a smile.

The same year, 1592, is when Shakespeare’s Richard III was first performed on stage. No, not at the Globe Theater, it’d be built seven years later. Like Journey to the West, it was based on preexisting stories; histories, other plays, and who knows what else. Also like that story, it’s been adapted into other versions... even manga, as of Requiem of the Rose King.

Also in 1592: The plague hit Malta. John Davis discovered the Falklands. Galileo invented the thermometer. And the Japanese invaded Korea, leading to a massive game of whack-a-mole as the Japanese won on land (most of the time) and the Korean navy laid various smackdowns on the sea (most of the time). It got ugly.

All of this was happening at once.

In the case of the two stories, there’s actually a reason they both were created about then. In both Ming China and England at the time, there was an explosion in printing, and an eager literate or semi-literate audience for entertainment. Also the harvests hadn’t exactly been the best (this was the Little Ice Age, if not as bad as it’d get later), there were wars going on nearby or on people’s doorsteps, and people really, really wanted distractions.

Those two stories are definitely distracting.

Think about this when you’re building your world’s history. Things are going to happen all over the place. If they’re far enough apart in time and space, they may not be related-

But maybe, even half a world apart, they are. Think about it!

Month of Saiyuki: end of a journey

Month of Saiyuki has ended but I did really had fun not only because I could review this fun challenge with more year experience than the first time I did it with my old blog but also because I could interact with some people who enjoyed my silly posts. I want to thank @bijectiveandinvertible for the active participation and cool comments she always left on my posts. Thank you! You made the experience even more enjoyable^^

And ofc I thank Seiten Taisei for creating years ago this fun event, it's nice to see ourselves how we evolved through this challenge.
