Saint Seiya’s Mythology I - Introduction
In this post I will be introducing my first series of mythological analysis of pop culture with one of the most famous anime series in 90s (and also one of my favourites)
Saint Seiya (or, as it's known in English, “Knights of the Zodiac”) is an anime series produced by Toei Entertainment based on a manga series created by Masami Kurumada in 1985 and serialized from 1986 to 1989 in Japan. In the 90's, the show was licensed for emission in Europe, being France the first foreign country broadcasting it, followed by Italy, Spain (where it earned a great success) and Latin America. It had a huge success in Latin America (at the point to create a certain “division” between Dragon Ball – maybe the most popular anime series in history - and Saint Seiya fan bases). His entrance in the Anglo-Saxon world was late, being dubbed in English (and strongly censored) in 2003, with moderated success in Canada and a minimum success in the US.
The plot can be summarized as “Long time ago, in the myth ages, when the gods walked among us, an order of protectors of peace and justice on Earth called the Athena Saints rose. Their members’ main mission was the protection of the goddess Athena (who reincarnates in the Earth every 200 years). Due to their sacred vow, they were only allowed to fight with his bare hands but they gained access to an inner energy (or “cosmo energy”) that can be manipulated for a long variety of powerful attacks. They were also given suits of armour inspired in the night-sky constellations to protect his bodies known as “cloths”. Today, Athena has reincarnated once more and, with five of this protectors by her side, would protect the planet from the evil divinities who wants to destroy it. They are the 'Knights of the Zodiac' ”
About the name of the anime series, in our Western world it’s called “Knights of the Zodiac” because, in our culture, the word “Saint” evokes a person more akin to spiritual virtues like faith, charity, selflessness, etc. than the type of martial values displayed by the holy warriors of this series (more related to the European Knight code of the medieval legends thanks to the Japanese culture influence). Seiya it’s the name of the main character, who is the bravest and more devoted to Athena of the group of five protectors that support the cause of the goddess all along the series.
