Chapter 8: Life Between Battles
Life Between Battles The days after their first battle passed in a haze of exhaustion and grief. The men of the Saint Patrick’s Battalion worked tirelessly to bury their dead, patch their wounds, and make sense of the lives they had just taken. For James Dawkins, the weight of what he had seen clung to him like a shadow. Every face, every cry of pain, every life lost—it was all etched into his…

One Man´s Hero (1999) - Saint Patrick's Battalion
Interesting film for Saint Patrick's day, One Man’s Hero about Irish deserters from US Army that Fought on Mexican side. I would show clips from this film to my Us History classes back when I taught US History. I liked how it showed that no matter how outnumbered they were or how hard the Mexicans and deserters fought, that Red White and Blue flag and the US Army just kept on advancing. Tough to beat brave men led by leaders like, Robert E Lee, Ulysses S Grant, Thomas Jackson and Jefferson Davis. It Is one of very few movies made about the Mexican American war. Well worth watching for Irish theme too. Actually a high proportion of the enlisted men of the small outnumbered US Army that did not desert and kept advancing under the stars and stripes were recent immigrants from Ireland. Good history Movie.

Eva Leonor Smith Riley
Cw: use of a slur, mentions of suicide
For oc names i go with how the parents would name them given the society they live in and vibe. Eva was no different.
Eva gets two lastnames because of naming conventions in mexico, so its her father's surname followed by mother's maiden name.
So first name and middle name:
Eva: is the latin spelling of the hebrew words Chava/Hava meaning life or life giver.
While i could lie and say Eva’s name was chosen of the symbolism that she helps Tommy heal and grow into a better man, she is named Eva after Evita Peron, first lady of Argentina who after her dictator husband was overthrown.
She was rather influentian and there was a myth taht where her body was hidden(it was exhumed and stolen) flowers would appear there.
Eva's name also comes from a 1917 femme fatale played by Mimi Derba in La Tigeresa named Eva who pretended to be a poor woman to win the heart of a lower class man and then broke up with him, faked her death which drove him insane only for her (now married to a rich man) to visit the institution he was in for charity and he kills her in his mad rage.
While the femme fatale is more in line with s1 Grace , Eva reveals in Of Gods and Witches she seduced the president's son and when he discovered his father was gonna have her assassinated while under house arrest he commits suicide ala Antigone and Haemon. This all happened while she was secretly dating her best friend and cousin’s secret girlfriend, Antonia.
But in the fic, Eva is named Eva because her mother, Isabel, schemed to make herself go into labor in the Sistine Chapel(right ubder God's Creation of Eve)to get the current Pope (Benedict XV) attend the baptism and his successor the future Pope Pius XI to be her godfather because the archbishop of mexico refused to go to her family's estate to baptize Eva’s older brother Gabriel.
Leonor: is the portuguese and spanish variant of Eleanor meaning Torch, light and/or sun ray.
Leonor was the name of her great grandmother who descends from Emperor Moctezuma, the last Aztec ruler, through his son Juan Moctezuma who was made a spanish noble. Leonor Moctezuma, Eva’s great grandmother, was born to a member of the Moctezuma family and a Nahua secretary in Mexico City.
Last Names:
Smith: anglo-saxon 'to hit or strike' possibly related to a person who was a metal worker.
So Smith is a common English surname and the surname of a romani traveller king named Absalom Smith in the early 19th century. He died in 1826 with the title of king of the gypsies (please excuse the slur)and had been elected so in the early 19th century according to the Mamchester Times. He was a fiddler and his daughter Beatte Smith was so beautiful there is portrait of her in Belvoir Castle, Manchester.
The Smiths were apparently an important Romani family like the Boswells who the Shelbys claim descendance from and the Welsh Romani woman Tommy seeks to see if the sapphire was cursed is also a Boswell. Eva was originally going to be a Boswell but that would've made her a relative of Tommy and i decided against it.
Riley: anglicized irish last name meaning rye-clearing.
So Eva’s grandfather Patrick Riley was an Irish immigrant and oc nephew to John Patrick Riley, Captain of the Saint Patrick's Battalion who were composed Catholic Irish, Scotsmen. Freed slaves and men of color tired of the racism they dealt with in the US and defected to Mexico right before the Mexican American War in the 1850s.
John Riley immigrated to the US due to the Great Famine and despute being known for his great strength of character and morality died alone and penniless in Veracruz as the torture and defeat of his battalion at the hands of the americans left him with very severe trauma and teh letters D on both sides of his face branded onto his skin for desertion even though he deserted before the war.
It provides as to why Eva is of mixed race and how her grandmother who is old money ended up having red haired children and show how diverse Mexico actually is

obscure history facts please?
My favorite more obscure thing that I've been researching lately is the saint patricks battalion. Basically during the Mexican-American War a bunch of Irish catholic and escaped formerly enslaved people ran over to the Mexican border and helped fight the American invasion. They have a really cool history and I'm writing a book about them at the moment.

Libby Spotlight: Romance eBook Picks for Hispanic Heritage Month
A Ballad of Love and Glory by Reyna Grande
A forgotten war. An unforgettable romance.
The year is 1846. After the controversial annexation of Texas, the US Army marches south to provoke war with México over the disputed Río Grande boundary.
Ximena Salomé is a gifted Mexican healer who dreams of building a family with the man she loves on the coveted land she calls home. But when Texas Rangers storm her ranch and shoot her husband dead, her dreams are burned to ashes. Vowing to honor her husband’s memory and defend her country, Ximena uses her healing skills as an army nurse on the frontlines of the ravaging war.
Meanwhile, John Riley, an Irish immigrant in the Yankee army desperate to help his family escape the famine devastating his homeland, is sickened by the unjust war and the unspeakable atrocities against his countrymen by nativist officers. In a bold act of defiance, he swims across the Río Grande and joins the Mexican Army—a desertion punishable by execution. He forms the St. Patrick’s Battalion, a band of Irish soldiers willing to fight to the death for México’s freedom.
When Ximena and John meet, a dangerous attraction blooms between them. As the war intensifies, so does their passion. Swept up by forces with the power to change history, they fight not only for the fate of a nation but for their future together.
History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera

But now, the future he's been imagining for himself has gone far off course.
To make things worse, the only person who truly understands his heartache is Jackson. But no matter how much they open up to each other, Griffin's downward spiral continues. He's losing himself in his obsessive compulsions and destructive choices, and the secrets he's been keeping are tearing him apart.
If Griffin is ever to rebuild his future, he must first confront his history, every last heartbreaking piece in the puzzle of his life.
Island Affair by Priscilla Oliveras
Sought-after social media influencer Sara Vance, in recovery from an eating disorder, is coming into her own, with a potential career expansion on the horizon. Despite the good news, her successful siblings (and their perfect spouses) have a way of making her feel like the odd one out. So, when her unreliable boyfriend is a no-show for a Florida family vacation, Sara recruits Luis Navarro—a firefighter paramedic and dive captain willing to play the part of her smitten fiancé . . .
Luis’s big Cuban familia has been in Key West for generations, and his quiet strength feeds off the island’s laidback style. Though guarded after a deep betrayal, he’ll always help someone in need—especially a spunky beauty with a surprising knowledge of Spanish curse words. Soon, he and Sara have memorized their “how we met” story and are immersed in family dinners, bike tours, private snorkeling trips . . . sharing secrets, and slow, melting kisses. But when it’s time for Sara to return home, will their fake relationship fade like the stunning sunset . . . or blossom into something beautiful?
This is the first volume of the "Keys to Love" series.
Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende
Born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue, Zarité - known as Tété - is the daughter of an African mother she never knew and one of the white sailors who brought her into bondage. Though her childhood is one of brutality and fear, Tété finds solace in the traditional rhythms of African drums and in the voodoo loas she discovers through her fellow slaves.
When twenty-year-old Toulouse Valmorain arrives on the island in 1770, it’s with powdered wigs in his baggage and dreams of financial success in his mind. But running his father’s plantation, Saint-Lazare, is neither glamorous nor easy. It will be eight years before he brings home a bride - but marriage, too, proves more difficult than he imagined. And Valmorain remains dependent on the services of his teenaged slave.
Spanning four decades, Island Beneath the Sea is the moving story of the intertwined lives of Tété and Valmorain, and of one woman’s determination to find love amid loss, to offer humanity though her own has been battered, and to forge her own identity in the cruellest of circumstances.

All Right, in honor of Pride: The first One-Shot from The Forest From the Trees. A/N: This fic pairs Silva from "Strange Way of Life" with Silas Selleck from "Slow West." This happens 10 years after Slow West and five years after Strange Way of Life, with both Silva and Silas Selleck both returning to their Gunslinger lives. I am taking a liberty or two here and there regarding Silva's and Silas Selleck stories (Such as adding a name to Silva (Silas is too similar a name, which would confuse the reader, and adding Silas having a brush with the Saint Patrick Batallion). Background: Feel free to ask for the link of what I wrote as a story. But to summarize, after selling their respective ranch and farm, Silva and Silas Selleck worked as lone gunslingers. But having both a reputation of being skilled and feared through the years after their return, an unscrupulous rich man sends them on a mission to kill a rival in California and steal an expensive piece of art from him, one they are competing with a few other bounty Hunters for.
THE FOREST FROM THE TREES ONE-SHOT: A Saint Patrick Batallion of Two
Prologue: After overcoming an earlier ambush by a bandit on their way to a Colorado town they were following a rival gang to, Silas Selleck and Saul Silva check in at the same post some gang members do as well. In the intimacy of this room, Silas slowly opens his heart to Silva and starts realizing there are feelings there he has been so afraid of having.
-Great having a cozy room and a comfortable bed for a damn change. - Silva removed his boots and let himself fall on the bed he chose as his own. -We should be thankful to the bastard who attempted to ambush us. I still can believe he could move with all that money. -Selleck was turning on some. Silva kept observing him. -For someone who claims not to be religious, you sure light quite a bit of candles.- Silva chuckled. -Do you prefer complete darkness?- Selleck finished and looked at Silva.- These damn candles are too weak. - The Irishman proceeded to remove his own boots and seat in the bed across the room from Silva. -Guess you'd feel at home here somehow. - Selleck clasped his hands -The decoration does remind me of home indeed, for something so austere. I still can't believe there are fellow mejicans around here. -Yeah, I figured. It did remind me of Mexico too. -You've ever been in Mejico?- Silva nailed his brown gaze more intensely in the man in front of him. After seeing Selleck nodding with a smile, he continued asking: -What were you doing there? -It was after I escaped Payne's gang with my... friend. He was Irish like me and he thought going to Mexico to join the Saint Patrick's Battalion would give some meaning to our existence, so I followed him and we joined. -You were a San Patricio?- Silva smiled. -That's right. -Selleck smiled back. -It was something I did out of love for my friend, but for a while, I did feel my life had some purpose, with my friend, them soldiers and the Mexicans we fought alongside. You know Silva, I just realized I feel happy joining forces with a Mexican again, even if it is for a much smaller mission Silva smiled; took the bottle of whiskey that he bought downstairs and served it in two glasses he saw on the night stand that divided the space between their beds, and gave the glass to Selleck. He raised the glass. -To being an Irishman and a Mejican in a Saint Patrick's Batallion of two. -To the Saint Patrick Alliance of two.- Selleck smiled and both men drank from their glasses. -I've met other former San Patricios when I was a rancher. Some escaped the hangings and settled in my town. Good people. I remember a song they would sing together. - Silva started singing "Am I a Soldier of The Cross*," which Selleck promptly joined in, and then the men laughed. -I sing that song often. - Selleck quipped. -Especially when I feel I'm close to death. -Closer to death? Thought you didn't believe in God.- Silva chuckled remembering all the times Selleck would roll his eyes at him whenever he entered a church or prayed at his small Virgen de Guadalupe image. -I don't.- Selleck frowned. -But it brings me close to those times. I feel comfort in those memories.
Silva and Selleck then continued to make the plan to follow the gang to the train station and the way they would attack them, before they went to sleep. Silva fell asleep first, and, as Selleck observed him, he started to get pensive. He thought Silva was a handsome man despite of his age showing in his face in ways not disimilar to those that were showing in Selleck's. And perhaps it was the fact that Silva was Mexican and an overall warm person that brought Selleck some memories.
But Selleck also felt a sudden fear. A fear of falling in love with that man. A month together and the Irishman noticed feeling drawn to him, and that scared him. Selleck promised himself not to attach to others nor allow himself intense feelings of love, especially romantic only to lose them again. He was carrying enough guilt with the death of his mother's and Jay's and then giving Rose to the doctor she fell in love with, and encourage their adoptive children to have a better life with him. It was not like Selleck liked going back to the aloneness and danger of being a bounty hunter, but it was not fare for Rose to stay with him where there was someone who could love her in ways Silas never could.
Selleck tried to block his thoughts of eventually splitting with Silva when the mission ended, and resolved to, instead, just enjoying his company until that moment would arrive, given that being drawn to his fellow gunslinger proved inevitable. _______________________________________ Useful links: I chose Silas Selleck past with the Saint Patrick's Battalion for two reasons: Silva is Mexican and Silas is Irish, and based on the song "Am I A Soldier of the Cross." Most members of the Saint Patrick's Battalion were Irish Catholic so the song Am I a Soldier of the Cross opened a chance to take this liberty and associate it with Silas's Irishness and Silva's Mexicanity.
The song "Am I a Soldier of the Cross was based in this Slow West scene. Silas sang one part during the shooting scene.

Commemoration of the mass hanging of the Saint Patrick’s Battalion
Formed and led by John Riley, was a unit of 175 to several hundred immigrants (accounts vary) and expatriates of European descent who fought as part of the Mexican Army against the United States in the Mexican–American War of 1846–8. El Batallón de San Patricio, The Saint Patrick’s Battalion, deserted to fight on the side of Mexico. Los San Patricios fought in five major battles from Monterrey,…

Translation:
I'm sorry Trigun but
The Irish have a better relationship with Mexico than the United states because there was a irish battalion (Saint Patrick's Battalion) in the Mexican–American War that told the gringos to go fuck themselves for being little bitches and anti catholic and anti irish. (We lost by a lot and the US stole California but that doesn't matter)
Sister Michael deserves to win just once. I'll be content
Just people the some irish dude in the 1850s united against the gringos and that's why we have Canelo Alvarez
FINALS - Catholic Character Tournament

Propaganda below ⬇️
Wolfwood
I love him. Man who has no faith in himself or humanity or god with so much blood on his hands, fighting for something he knows he can never see come to fruition in person. He carries his own literal cross and grave marker on his back. Just… he’s so iconic to me.
I'm sure I'm not the first to submit him. But I did it anyway. I hope he wins and I'll do anything in my power to make sure he does
Dude is literally a priest who carries around a giant cross. Yes he uses the cross to murder people but that is besides the point. Also he has a mini church he carries around for on-the-go confession services.
hes literally a priest(hes not a priest in the reboot but he is in the original and thats what matters to Me). he carries around a cross that is actually secretly a gun with guns inside that gun. he runs a church/orphanage. he carries around a portable confession booth and charges people money for it because he is broke as fuck. he dies bleeding out over an alter begging to god for forgiveness he doesnt think he deserves. he is everything to me.
look at this man he's a priest with a cross shaped gun that (spoilers) dies against the side of a church while waxing poetic about life and redemption (/spoilers), this is the Catholic ever.
Wolfwood is liiiiiterally Judas coded in the text. AND his weapon is a massive cross that turns into a machine gun and a LASER. Not to mention his religious trauma. Oh baby. The religious trauma.
Homeboy literally walks around with a giantass 300lb machine gun shaped like a cross called the Punisher. Hes a priest/undertaker depending on what version of trigun you reference. Grew up in a church orphanage. Also literally walks around with a portable confessional box for people to pay to confess to him. Need i say more.
HE IS LITERALLY JUDAS. he is literally leading the jesus allegory to his doom. hes also in love with the jesus allegory (vash). he is also carrying arouns a giant cross rhat is also a gun. hes literally catholic and judas and his tits are perfect. in one piece of official art he's wearing a cross choker. also the catholicism on gunsmoke is about making vash submit. wolfwood looking at that pathetic wet mess of a man oh i can make him submit easily.
He literally carries around a giant cross and is referred to as a priest by multiple characters. also he offers people confessionals
He carries a huge machine gun that is in the shape of a cross that is really heavy (he is strong) and his boobs are huge. So you know hes serving cunt in a god honoring way. Also in trigun 1998 he brings around a small chapel that he uses as a portable confessional and in trigun stampede he holds funeral services as an undertaker which are way overly priced. Also he dies very gayly (basicly confessing his love to his best boy friend forever)
Nick's funny bc he's probably the least Christian acting guy but is literally a preacher. There's a running gag with Vash asking some variation of "what the hell kinda churchman are you?" His gun is a gigantic cross. He rides a shitty motorcycle in the middle of the desert.
ok so thematically the main conflict in trigun is about peace vs violence and its represented by the characters vash and knives respectively. the two aren't /technically/ angels but thematically and through imagery they are and are comparable to michael and lucifer specifically. ANYWAYS. vash and knives are the characters who are constantly pushing and pulling at wolfwood's morality, sort of like a "the devil and god are raging inside of me" kinda deal. his grappling with his morality and faith is a big factor in his character. also he has a giant fucking gun shaped like a cross. and he dies in a church while praying.
Bros an orphan who grew up at a Catholic orphanage and taken away to be trained and genetically changed into a supercharged assassin for interworldly beings that have lots of angel imagery attached. Guy thought he was just going to be taken to become a missonary...instead he got 6 years of religious trauma. He still wears a cross necklace and holds it often. His gun is a literal cross "full of mercy" (its a missile launcher). He never really believed fully in the faith or anything, but the way he interacts with it is FASCINATING. He's jaded by the planet he lives on and his upbringing, and makes him say his most iconic quote: "We're nothing like God. Not only do we have limited powers, but sometimes we're driven to become the devil himself." He prays to a God he doesn't know if he actually believes in, asking for another day— for hope for the human race. The organization hes part of (The Eye of Michael) works for an interdimensional otherworldly being that has an incredible amount of angelic metaphor and imagery attached who intends to purge the planet of humans... and ends up siding with that guy's twin brother who is so Jesus coded it's insane. They are best friends even as Wolfwood is acting under instructions to babysit and watch him for his twin brother. He dies after facing down against his old mentor (named Chapel) and his pseudo brother from the orphanage who was taken into the Eye as well and his Jesus bestie buries him and sticks his cross-gun in the ground after losing his shit crazy style and using his pseudo alien angel Jesus powers to lash out at his brother for being the cause of Wolfwood's death. Rest in peace king

Sister Michael
She drives a DeLorean. She does judo on Fridays. She likes a good statue and despises the French. Her full nun name is Sister George Michael, after the guy from Wham!. She is the fiercest nun you’ll ever come across and, if you’re attending Lady Immaculate College, she’s the woman in charge. So whatever you do, if you’re feeling anxious or worried or just need a chat: don’t come crying to her.
joined the nunnery for the free accommodation?
she does love a good statue it has to be said
She is the headmistress of a catholic school <3
sister michael so reminds me of the nuns who taught me. they're tough and sometimes a little harsher than a woman who dedicated her life to god should be but they're also wonderful people. i had a nun teacher who was 60 years old and would do handstands. another nun (also in her 60s) told me god was nonbinary. another was really mean and made me cry. (so did the handstand nun.) while the catholic girls school is The Catholic Experience, the school wouldn't have been the same for me or the derry girls without at least one nun who seemed to have sprung up out of the ground fully formed, ageless.

@dejlige-dage Of course!

This is gonna be a bit long, but here goes, I’m writing a paper based on a book of my choice, and since I happen to be really interested in the Mexican-American war of 1846-1848, with a specific interest in the Saint Patrick’s Battalion that fought for the Mexican army, here are some highlights:
Since this is about a war, I will put some warnings
Trigger Warning:
War brutality
Body mutilation
I mention the Potato Famine (1845), and how many Irish people migrated to the U.S.
Further migration to the west and the south of the country, this also happens to take place during Manifest Destiny, there was also an event of the Bible Riots in 1844 where they burned down a catholic convent in Boston.
1846, after Texas is annexed into the U.S. in 1845, Mexico denies such annexation due to the conflicts in such territory in the 1830s, and thus war starts.
Many of the Irish immigrants immediately upon arrival to the U.S. enlist in the army with the promise of a good pay and land. Tensions arise amongst the soldiers between Catholics and Protestants.
According to the Smithsonian article I’m using, about 40% of the U.S. army consisted of immigrants when they entered the war.
Upon serious mistreatment from the U.S. army due to xenophobia and anti-Catholic sentiments, many of the soldiers of immigrant backgrounds (this consisted of Irish, Polish, Germans, Italians, etc.) fled or deserted, among them John Riley.
These men joined the Mexican Army, which, by the words of Santa Anna “The Mexican nation only looks upon you as some deceived foreigners, and hereby stretch out to you a friendly hand, offer you the felicity and fertility of their territory.”
Thus those who had left the U.S. army formed the Saint Patrick’s Battalion, made up of Infantry and Artillery soldiers, complete with their own banner (it’ll be at the bottom of the post), In the article by Jaime Fogarty, he mentions the banner: The group’s banner displayed an Irish harp surrounded by the Mexican coat-of-armswith a scroll reading, “Freedom for the Mexican Republic,” and underneath the harp was the motto in Gaelic “Erin go Brágh” (Ireland for Ever). On the other side of the banner Saint Patrick was depicted holding a pastoral staff resting on a serpent. A U.S. soldier described it as “a beautiful green silk banner [that] waved over their heads; on it glittered a silver cross and a golden harp, embroidered by the hands of the fair nuns of San Luis Potosí.
John Riley, mentioned before, was given the rank of Brevet Major in the Saint Patrick’s.
They fought in a series of battles important in the Mexican-American War:
Battle of Monterrey (September 21–24, 1846) such battle happened within the city walls, with Texas rangers sent by William J. Worth, according to Mexican chroniclers, the rangers upon Worth’s orders would open fire on civilians, ransack homes, and took part in looting. The battle ended with the Mexican army to leave the city after negotiations, thus allowing for the U.S. army to take a hold of it. This battle earned the Saint Patrick’s a reputation of holding their ground. Many soldiers of the U.S. Army deserted and joined the Mexican ranks after this battle.
Battle of Buena Vista or La Angostura (February 22–23, 1847), this was a battle with an ambiguous ending, both sides claiming victory, notably one of the fiercest known fights of the Saint Patrick’s, “Two six-pounder cannon of the U.S. Fourth Artillery were captured by the enemy due to intense fire from the San Patricio cannoneers, aided by support troops.” Several Irishmen were granted the War Cross from the Mexican Army and promoted in rank.
A small break here noting that after La Angostura, Winfield Scott’s troops reach Mexico through sea, landing in Veracruz in order to advance to Mexico City.
Battle of Cerro Gordo (April 1847), after being sent from San Luis Potosi to Xalapa (Jalapa), the Saint Patrick’s had re-organized and were now officially called The Foreign Legion of Saint Patrick. John Riley and Santiago O’Leary were made captains of the First and Second Companies, and Francisco Moreno was made colonel and commander of the legion. Despite the efforts, this battle also resulted in an American victory.
Battle of Churubusco (August 20, 1847), final battle of the battalion, the Saint Patrick’s and another battalion, Los Bravos were on the parapets of the convent of Churubusco. They were outnumbered, resulting in total defeat, and an estimate of 75 -85 of the men in the battalion captured and others escaped. In Fogarty’s article, according to Dr. Michael Hogan in his own book The Irish Soldiers of Mexico, “Captain Patrick Dalton of the San Patricios tore the white flag down, and General Pedro Anaya ordered his men to fight on with their bare hands if necessary”. To continue in the aftermath, “ 35 San Patricios were killed in action, O’Leary and O’Reilly were wounded and Francis O’Connor lost both legs as a result of his heroic stand against the invaders”
What happened to the others was that they were put on trial for desertion, those before the war was declared were whipped and branded, and those who deserted after were sentenced to the gallows. Those that were only whipped and branded were forced to dig their comrade's graves. Even Francis O’Connor, who as mentioned, had lost his legs, was dragged from the hospital and was put to the gallows, Patrick Dalton, who had ripped off the flag of surrender, estimated to be 20-22 years of age, did not have a quick death.
These actions, had of course, outraged and angered the Mexican population, condemning the Americans and the U.S. army, stating these were acts of barbarity. Oddly enough, despite the horrendous acts of the executions, more deserted the U.S. army.
While this battalion isn’t exactly commemorated outside of Mexico, there is a ceremony that celebrates their participation in the Mexican-American War each September 12th and every March 17th.
This is a much lesser known part of history that I never thought I’d be absolutely interested in, and here I am wanting to make an undergrad thesis out of it.
