May you all have a Glad Lucia/Happy Saint Lucy’s day! 🕯️🕯️🕯️
Today, the country of Sweden celebrates a saint from Syracuse. How do we do that? Well, the night to the 13th of December we are suppose to be awake all night which we call ”lussevaka”. In earlier time we stayed up all night working and the reason we did that was because the forces of darkness were extremely active on that night. In the morning you had a big breakfast. Now a days, people are mostly out partying till early morning.
Then there are “Lucia trains” (no real trains involved) where people are dressed up as white dressed maids (tärnor), star boys (symbolically the tree wise men but nobody remembers that anymore), Christmas elves, gingerbread men and -of course- Lucia herself with candles in her hair. They sing Christmas carols and Lucia songs. And then there’s a lot of saffron buns (lussekatter which literally mean lusse-cats), gingerbread, mulled wine and coffee.
Oh and did I mention? We are a Protestant country. Sweden hasn’t been catholic since the reformation. But, obviously, that doesn’t stop us from celebrating an Sicilian, catholic saint from the 4th century😘

SAINT OF THE DAY (December 13)
Tumblr media
St. Lucy is a virgin and martyr of Syracuse in Sicily, whose feast is celebrated on December 13th.
According to tradition, Saint Lucy was born to rich and noble parents in the year 283.
Her father was of Roman origin, but his early death left her dependent upon her mother, whose name Eutychia seems to indicate that she was of Greek heritage.
Like so many of the early martyrs, Lucy had consecrated her virginity to God, and she hoped to devote all her worldly goods to the service of the poor.
Her mother Eutychia arranged a marriage for her, but for three years, she managed to postpone the marriage.
Lucy prayed at the tomb of Saint Agatha to change her mother’s mind about her faith.
As a result, her mother's long haemorrhagic illness was cured, and she consented to Lucy's desire to live for God.
Lucy’s rejected bridegroom, Paschasius, denounced Lucy as a Christian.
The governor planned to force her into prostitution, but when guards went to fetch her, they could not move her even when they hitched her to a team of oxen.
The governor ordered her to be killed instead.
After a gruesome torture, which included having her eyes torn out, she was surrounded by bundles of wood that were set afire, but the fire quickly died out.
She prophesied against her persecutors and was then executed by being stabbed to death with a dagger.
According to later accounts, Lucy warned Paschasius he would be punished.
When the governor heard this, he ordered the guards to gouge out her eyes.
However, in another telling, it was Lucy who removed her eyes in an attempt to discourage a persistent suitor who greatly admired them.
When her body was being prepared for burial, they discovered her eyes had been restored.
This and the meaning of her name ("light" or "lucid") led to her patronage with eyes: the blind, eye trouble, and other eye ailments.

St Lucia of Syracuse is a 3rd century saint who was martyred for her faith. She gave her dowry to the poor & refused to marry her betrothed, promising herself to God. In some legends, her eyes were gouged out, which brings her association with being the patron of the blind & those with occular problems.
She is associated with saffron & the colour yellow, & is almost always depicted with a crown of candles representing the coming light as we approach on the solstice. She has a major association with baking due to the legend of her bringing food to Christians hiding in the catacombs. I have recipes commonly associated with her listed below ♡
Lussebullar (saffron buns) --- when curled up, they are called lussekatt, "Lucia cats"
Lucia pepparkaka (gingersnaps)
Cuccìa (boiled wheatberry pudding) --- commemorates Lucia's intervention in ending the famine in Sicily in 1646

theres a reason we celebrate the holidays that take place in or around december at the time we do. MOST of the sacred holidays celebrated near midwinter have a very similar story. its a very old story that we all know well: its always about a candle in the darkness; its always about hope in the most hopeless times. when the sun is as far away from us as it ever gets, the earth speaks and tells the same story over and over again, "spring is born in the darkest nights of winter. it is small and meek but it will grow."

anyway idk i thought this info would make u laugh if u didnt already know abt it bc damn i dont think anyone is going to take alesi’s number one charles fan status away from him
Bold of you to assume that this blog is not run by Jean Alesi.
All joking aside I have seen, and Jean is our fearless cult leader. (that being said if I ever show my Ferrari shrine people would be concerned, does it include the prayer card? well that's for me to know)
I am deeply flattered to be mentioned among such esteemed Charles fans <3
