“She was an Anglo-Saxon Benedictine nun and is recognized as a saint. In 746 she and others left Wimborne Minster in Dorset to join her kinsman Boniface in his mission to the German people. She was a learned woman and was involved in the foundation of nunneries in Kitzingen and Ochsenfurt. She had a leading role in evangelizing the area. Leoba was acclaimed for many miracles: saving a village from fire; saving a town from a terrible storm; protecting the reputation of the nuns in her convent; and saving the life of a fellow nun who was gravely ill – all accomplished through prayer.”

Catholic Worldbuilding and the Wizarding World - Headcanons and More

If you've read All That Remains, my Regulus-Black centric work, you'll know I've incorporated Catholicism into my fics since then. The inspiration to incorporate Catholicism came from both @artemisia-black's Lacrimosa and Fiat justitia and her world building in D&D and Pietas, and @green-and-grey-kenaz's And he Drank.

Some caveats before I go on:

These are just headcanons of mine and things I've put into my fics. They work with the world but you don't need to accept them as canon or canon-compliant. Nor am I asking you to do so. I'm just excited to have this list put together of what I've done and the research that went into it.

There are other religions and faiths in the wizarding world. As Britain became more multicultural and diverse, it meant the purebloods and wizarding population did too.

This list is specifically for certain old-school Catholic families, particularly ones like the Blacks.

Catholic HCs and world building in my works:

Old-world pureblood families were Catholic. As the Roman Empire spread, witches and wizards from other areas hopped into Britain and converted Muggles and purebloods alike from paganism to Christianity. Wizarding world Jesus was a wizard; the Resurrection can still hold up as a miracle because no magic can reverse death.

When Hogwarts was founded in about 1000 AD, a chapel was installed inside the school. In my Regulus Black-centric work, I have the chapel and its tabernacle being a personal gift from Pope John XV to Salazar Slytherin in honor of the new school being built. 

Magical Catholic Mass isn’t terribly different from Muggle Catholic Mass. The key difference is that since purebloods/wizarding society tends to be more old-school than Muggles, purebloods never bothered to implement the vernacular changes of Vatican II. They still celebrate Mass in Latin. 

The Pope is always aware of magical Catholics, not unlike the Prime Minister knowing about wizards. There are wizarding bishops and cardinals buried in the catacombs in the Vatican.

Magical Catholics have their own dioceses; they’re bigger, geographically speaking, because there’s a much smaller wizarding population than the general population. 

Pureblood Squibs are sent to monasteries or convents. 

I’ve created several locations like St. Mungo’s to accommodate various parts of wizarding society. St. Mungo was a real Britonnic saint, so all these saints below are also Anglo-Saxon/British and I’ve incorporated them into my worldbuilding, particularly in my current longfic, Supernova. Again, these are all my creations - not actual canon. 

There is a privately-funded pureblood hospital called St. Teilo’s. It’s where purebloods go to avoid being treated by Muggleborn Healers or associating with Muggleborns in general. St. Teilo’s bio page.

I created a day school for pureblood girls called St. Leoba’s. In the context of my fic, Supernova, it’s where a lot of pureblood girls go to school before they go to Hogwarts, whose parents aren’t keen to educate them themselves. St. Leoba’s bio page. 

There is a long-term care home called St. Hugh’s Home for Hopeless Cases. It’s a poorly funded Ministry facility for wizards with long-term illnesses and inmates from Azkaban who have been Kissed. St. Hugh of Lincoln’s bio page.

Purebloods worship at St. Aelred’s Cathedral. St. Aelred of Rievaulx was a real monastic whose abbey is now in ruins in Northumbria. I weave that into my stories by having Muggles see the abbey in ruins, but purebloods can see a proper cathedral and that’s where they have Mass. St. Aelred’s bio page. 

St. Aelred also has an extensive graveyard, complete with private mausoleums for individual families. The Blacks have one of the grandest mausoleums. 

The stained glass windows and art in St. Aelred’s move like photographs and portraits. The crucifix appears to be ‘living’ with blood shining on Christ’s wounds. Purebloods think it’s neat.  

The Statute of Secrecy and the creation of the Church of England were tied together. The CoE was founded in the early 1500s. The Statute of Secrecy went into effect in the late 1600s. The rise in persecution against witches and wizards, particularly from Muggles associating Catholic practices with witchcraft in general, was one of the reasons why the Statute went into effect. As a result, this is one of the other reasons why purebloods are so resentful towards Muggles and Muggleborns, as most of them are Anglicans.

Most pureblood families aren’t necessarily devout. Cultural Christianity/Catholicism is fairly common, but even when it’s cultural, it’s still very much a way for purebloods to wield power, influence, and control. 

Like many Catholics, old-school purebloods really like their relics and/or more ‘gory’ mementos. You may be aware that Catholics venerate (not worship, not adore, more like honoring) relics of dead saints, such as fragments of bone, skin, blood, etc. Given the Black family’s cool collection of blood and other unusual items, it makes sense to me that pureblood Catholics are fully on board with collecting pieces of dead bodies and having their own reliquaries at home. 

The splitting of one’s soul is an act of violence against the sacred. I wrote a meta on Horcruxes and Soul-Splitting; I imagine that the most zealous purebloods would find horcruxes to be outright offensive, not because of the murders involved, but because of the disintegration of the soul. “Beggars of all ages were found everywhere in the Empire. We can imagine them crowded near the church doors and massed under the portals, their numbers swelling on feast days and pilgrimages. Hagiographical texts depict genuine or fake paralytics, the lame, the blind, or simply miserable wretches hoping for a bit of silver or bread. One paralytic camped for five years at the door of Saint-Martin of Tours. A hunchback collected his sustenance every day near the tomb of Saint-Marcellin. The Abess Leoba of Bischofheim provided food and clothing for the sick woman who lay at the entrance to the monastery. Some made their way into the church itself in search of shelter and the protection of the relics and stayed the night.

Begging could be a profitable profession. A blind old man in Aix who was in the habit of begging from a door to door with a crowd of the poor refused to pray for the restoration of his sight:

Why do I need the vision I lost so long ago? It is worth more to me to be deprived of it than to have it. Blind, I can beg and none will repulse me. Rather, they hasten to attend to my needs. But if I had my sight back, it would seem wrong for me to beg alms even though I am old and weak and cannot work.

The sight of beggars gathered in squares and at crossroads was a cause of anxiety to the public power. In 806, Charlemagne took measures ‘to control the beggars who circulate around the country.’ Under Louis the Pouis a supervisor was appointed to watch the conduct of these wretches at Aix. In effect, all sorts of vagabonds mixed in with these beggars: errant monks, clerks breaking the ban, shady merchants (mangones), pseudo-penitents, half-naked and weighed down with irons ‘pretending that a penance of wandering had been imposed on them.’ Such people could become dangerous and turn to brigandage. ...Carolingian roads were not very safe. Brigandage was rampant everywhere. Outlaws hid in the forests and posted themselves at the entrances of defiles to rob travellers of the few precious objects they might be carrying. They followed the army across the country in the hopes of pillaging the baggage. The difficulties which beset the end of the reign favored brigands. A capitulary of 804 was specifically devoted to the scourge. Counts were ordered to pursue brigands taking refuge in certain privileged domains. (These were known as the lands with immunity.) For a while, brigandage seemed less threatening under Louis the Pious, but by the middle of the century it was more menacing than ever. Bandits could profit from the fraternal dissensions rising out of the partition of the Empire by seeking refuge in another kingdom. Writing to a friend about 856, Lupus of Ferrières asked him to choose a safe road and seek ‘travel companions whose number and courage would facilitate their audience of brigand groups or their repulsion necessary.’ In the same period, Charles addressed the Capitulary of Servais to the repression of banditry. Italy had the same problems. Louis II declared that brigandage flourished everywhere with the complicity of counts and royal officers. Lay and ecclesiastical aristocrats as well as the more wealthy landed proprietors often connived with brigands to divide the loot. The presence of the Normans favored the creation of such bands. Charles the Bald planned the organization of local resistance to outlaws. At the end of the century, Carloman promulgated a law against rapine at Compiègne. But how could anyone struggle when, as Hincmar says, these brigands were not only protected by the great but paid to contract themselves out as assassins?

To add to this somber picture, we must remember the habitual brutality already apparent in Merovingian Europe and even Byzantium. Reading the German laws, which continued in force, we are struck by the many forms of physical brutality that were expected, for the laws give precise details of the behaviour for which financial compensation was to be expected. They speak of severed ears, with or without loss of hearing, the rape of poor women, eyes torn out, noses slit partially or totally, tongues cut out, teeth broken, beards torn, joints crushed, hands and feet cut off, testicles mangled. And the penalties ordained by the law were no less cruel. The classic punishment for rebellion was blinding, particularly for a member of the royal family. Judges did not recoil from punishing slaves with mutilation and castration, fire or drowning. Theodulf was one of the rare ones to protest these ‘barbarous’ punishments. A bishop of Le Mans even chastised his clerks who had displeased him. To be sure, that act provoked Charlemagne’s intervention and the removal of the offending bishop. The king also tried to impede the course of private wars, faida, in which entire families were wiped out. Civil war was no less terrible. The Aquitainians long remembered the devastation caused by Charles Martel and Pepin III; nor did Bretons forget the campaigns of Louis the Pious in Armorica. Lothar’s army, in the struggle with the king’s brothers, behaved as though they were in an enemy country. And when combat was joined with pagans, the Frankish fury knew no limits. Victims of the Childbed - Hildegard of the Vinzgau (or of Swabia), Queen of the Franks

     Of the four wives and six concubines Charlemagne is known to have had relationships with, Hildegard was perhaps his best beloved. Their marriage was, of course, solely politically motivated. Prior to marrying Hildegard, Charlemagne was caught up in a dangerous rivalry with his younger brother Carloman. Their father Pepin the Short, King of the Franks had bequeathed his kingdom to both of his sons, with the lands divided between them. A conflict had arisen when it became apparent that both sons believed themselves to be the sole heir to the entirety of their father’s territory.

     Charlemagne, who would have at the time been known by his first name of Charles, took Hildegard as his consort sometime in 771. He had just annulled his first marriage to a Lombardian princess and intended this match to undermine his brother’s power. Hildegard was from a powerful Germanic family. Her father Gerold was Count of Kraichgau and Anglachgau and her mother Emma was a daughter of the Duke of Alemannia. She was raised in the area that is today Baden-Württemberg. Hildegard’s family had holdings in Carloman’s kingdom, which were highly prized by Charlemagne. Carloman’s sudden death may have coincided with Hildegard’s marriage to Charlemagne.

     Hildegard was around seventeen years old when she married Charlemagne and became Queen of the Franks. It is possible that she was more involved in her husband’s affairs and had more influence than his other wives, as she is the only consort known to have used her position to aid her relatives. Due to her frequent pregnancies, it is assumed that Hildegard accompanied Charlemagne on his extensive military campaigns. As queen, Hildegard was a gracious benefactress of religious establishments. Most notably she was a friend  and host to Saint Leoba, chief patron of the Monastery of Kempton, and jointly commissioned religious works with her husband, such as the Godescalc Gospels. In all, Hildegard appears to have been an involved and popular queen during her twelve years as consort to Charlemagne.

     Queen Hildegard bore nine children between 772 and 783, including a set of twins. Six of her children survived infancy: Charles the Younger, Carloman (re-baptized Pepin), Rotrude, Louis the Pious, Bertha, and Gisela. Though it is clear she and her husband had an active physical relationship, in an era with no reliable contraception, near constant pregnancy was the unavoidable outcome of a marriage like Hildegard’s. Her ninth child, a short-lived daughter sometimes also called Hildegard, was born in 783. The contemporary scribe Paul the Deacon records that Hildegard died as a result of this birth; she was about twenty-nine years old. Charlemagne’s reaction to his wife’s death is unrecorded, but he did order candles to be burnt by her grave and daily prayers to be said for Hildegard’s soul.

Hildegard has been titled “The Mother of Kings and Emperors,” as three of her sons were crowned kings and Louis the Pious later went on to become Holy Roman Emperor after his father.
