I have no idea if this is intentional considering this is a show from the 90s, but I wonder if Usagi gravitates to frivolous shit to escape her current life?

Like, she doesn't actually want to be a model, I mean she's never even mentioned that desire before. She only wants to become one because she views her current life as a shit show and wants to escape to another one. Literally EVERYONE gets on her case about being a failure. People tell her "just work hard and you'll get good grades," but it's rarely that simple is it? Maybe Usagi has ADHD or something and it's difficult to focus, or some other problem that makes it difficult for her to learn the way schools want her to. Whatever the reason, she views being a disappointment to literally everyone in her life as an inevitability.

So she just gravitates towards little things that make her happy, that distract her from reality. Jewelry, video games, palm reading, it's all one big distraction.

And not to mention modelling. People who know little tend to think they know a lot. Usagi knows nothing about modelling, so it looks easy and glamorous. It looks like something even she could do.

And I guess that's a reason why she never really took her hero work seriously: her life of being treated as a failure is sabotaging that, and considering Luna treats her like garbage, too, that initiated Usagi's need to escape. Another reality she needs to run away from.
