Unwrap Me (1.4k, Dean Winchester/Castiel, M)
ao3 link
Dean never thought he would make it this far. Nor would he have as many wonderful things that he has now. A home, friends, family, and most importantly love. With a former angel.
Given how normal his life is now, Dean decides he wants to go all out celebrating Christmas. Parties, feasts, and the perfect presents. He wants to get Cas something that will translate everything that resides in his heart. Dean believes he has the right gift, but decides against leading with it. Instead surprising Cas with it after showing him his Christmas best.
Although, during his entire time planning Cas's present, he never wondered what Cas got him...
Dean adjusts the ribbon wrapped around his waist, tastefully covering his half-hard cock with a large bow; its tails draped over his balls. Assured he looks perfect, Dean turns from the mirror. Texts Cas, letting him know his present is finally ready.
Cas ☀ (11:45 p.m.): Be there soon. Helping Sam with research.
“Sammy…” Sighing, Dean sets his phone down on the nightstand closest to his side. “Think you’d take even the smallest break today, since it’s Christmas.”
Almost Christmas, at least. In fifteen minutes. But before they exchange gifts with their family next morning, Dean and Cas discussed a more intimate setting where they can unwrap each other’s presents. Given how this is the first year they’ll celebrate Christmas as a couple, Dean wanted some privacy. Not solely because of his attire. The lacy ribbon smokescreen for Cas’s real present, safely tucked inside his drawers. And, if well received, his outfit will help perfectly transition into a holiday tradition Dean hopes last many years.
But, until Sam frees his boyfriend from work, he must wait. “What’s the point of being retired if we’re still cracking open lore?” Dean collapses onto the bed, disturbing scattered rose petals.
Seconds later, someone knocks at the door. “Dean?” Cas asks, voice muffled, “Is it okay for me to come in?”
Dean flew forward, cursing under breath. Then muttering prayers how Cas followed his instructions about knocking first. “Gimme a sec, Cas!” Dean tapped his phone, quickly finding the song he downloaded specifically for this moment. Orville Peck’s smooth baritone filtered through speakers he installed earlier, singing ‘Roses Are Falling’. Dean crawls towards the center of his mattress, sitting, cushioned by pillows. Scoops a few petals and peppering his legs with them. “Right!” he calls, stretching languidly, “You can come in!”
Cas enters, and suddenly Dean’s carefully perfected smolder is extinguished. He throws a hand across his face, hiding his wide grin. Snorts and ducks his head, gaze still trained on his boyfriend.
“Huh,” Cas says, “I guess great minds do think alike…”
Dean watches Cas’s hands fall, trench coat parting open like curtains. Reveals a similar ribbon covering his genitals. Though while Dean’s was red, Cas chose green. It matched his boots and novelty cowboy hat: both dyed the same color as Cas’s ribbon. “Yeah,” Dean chuckles while Peck continues his serenade, “I guess so.”
“I reckon so,” Cas corrects, drawl forcing a shiver up his spine. Visibly, judging Cas’s smug expression. Rolling his eyes, Dean climbs off the bed and advances.
“Close the door,” he tells Cas, “don’t want to give Sam the gift of trauma.” Then, standing inches from Cas, he amends his previous statement. “More trauma,” he smirks.
Cas shuts away the outside world, leaving only them. Dean guides Cas’s trench coat off his shoulders, tossing it aside when able. They tear away ribbon, both strips landing in a tangled mess at their feet. He wraps his arms around his boyfriend’s shoulders, kissing him. “Merry Christmas,” he whispers.
Grip firm along Dean’s hip, Cas guides Dean closer. Chests pressed together, hearts beating the same song. “Merry Christmas, Dean.”
Playing with the hairs at Cas’s nape, Dean breathes a confession against his neck. “I have another present for you.”
“You do?” Cas’s fingers tease at his hole, searching, “It doesn’t feel like you do…”
“Dog.” Dean shoves him off, laughing. “Is sex all you have on your brain?”
“Forgive me, Dean, but when the most gorgeous man in the entire universe is in my arms – naked – my body succumbs to its most base instincts.” He squeezes at his stiff cock, smirking. “See?”
Blushing, Dean ignores Cas’s attempts at baiting him. Knocks his hat off with a pointed flick. “Lose the boots, cowboy, and go lay down.”
Cas obeys, trailing behind him. “I thought you said sex wasn’t your gift?”
“Are you even curious about what I have?” Dean asks, hovering by his nightstand, “Because I can sit on your dick right now and I can put your real present away for your birthday.” Expression schooled into strenuous thought, he continues, “When is that again?”
“Okay, okay, I get it…” Cas lies on his side, blue eyes shining with mirth. Like the ocean glittering from the rising sun. “I’ll be quiet, starting… now.”
Dean sighs, doubtful Cas will keep that promise, but rummages through his drawers for Cas’s present regardless. He finds it well hidden, covered by an old car magazine he saved. Clutching it in his palm, Dean joins Cas. Kneels beside him, excitement wreaking havoc with his nerves. Bouncing, shoulders raised high, neck disappearing, and cheeks straining from his smile, Dean holds a fist out to an expectant Cas.
“Cas,” he begins, “I – uh… well, I know we only started dating pretty recently, but I’ve loved you way, way longer than that.”
“I know,” Cas interrupts, sliding his hand under Dean’s chin, cupping it. “You explained so after Jack plucked me from the Empty, right after punching me for making another ‘idiotic deal’, your words… and before our first kiss.” Dean’s joyful spirit flickers, glare piercing. Cas responds with apologetic crinkles, “You’re right… you’re right… quiet now.”
“Anyway,” Dean continues, “it might seem like we did this all ass-backwards, but I could care less how we got here since here means you and I, together. We get to do whatever we want with the rest of our lives and… there’s no one I’d rather have at my side. In my passenger seat, or – when I’m tired, and need to lay my weary head to rest – on the wheel.” His fingers unfurl like spring flowers, a silver key nestled in his palm. Cas gasps, stare darting between it and Dean. “It’s not a ring,” he says, “because what’s the point in those if we’re legally dead. Besides, we’ve spent so many years running around in circles… never saying what we should have… I’d hate for that to be the symbol of our relationship. This, though, I… Baby’s mine. But –“
“But you want her to be ours?” Cas finishes, forefinger gently stroking the key. He freezes, wincing at Dean, “Sorry, I did it again.”
Dean relaxes, handing Cas’s key over. “Nah, I was pretty much done, anyhow.”
Cas accepts his gift, then launches himself forward. Kisses Dean passionately, embrace drawn long enough that when they break both men pant. “This makes my gift look worse, by comparison, you realize,” he says, squinting, “you thoughtful, romantic bastard. Making me look like a tool.”
“Hey, I happen to like what you got me,” Dean laughs, smoothing stray hairs from Cas’s temple. His other hand trails lower, brushing his boyfriend’s pubic patch. “Exactly what I’ve been craving.”
Cas noses at Dean’s cheek, growling. “Oh, has it?”
“Yep.” He pops the ‘p’, scratching Cas’s scalp while stubble scrapes freckled skin. “Think maybe I can get a taste of your candy cane, sunshine?”
Laying a hand on Dean’s hand closest to his dick, Cas surprises him by removing it. “Maybe later.”
           “Later?”
“I’d rather go for a drive,” he suggests, brandishing his new key, “wouldn’t that sound like a nice Christmas treat?”
“Driving? Now?” Dean splutters, objections loaded like bullets in a gun. However, Cas tilts the argument in his favor, blue eyes wide and soft as if he were a puppy. A dirty trick played during battles Cas knew he would lose. Dean’s defenses crumbled, those bullets clattering on the floor. “I… guess we can. Never too early to get you and Baby better acquainted.” He rises, mournful, “Guess I better find some pants –“
Cas grabs his wrist, stopping him. “No, Dean,” he says, “there’s no time!” He drags Dean out, ignoring all Dean’s squawked protests. Orville’s voice echoing, phone abandoned in their haste. “We have to drive like this!” he insists.
“Naked?” Dean hisses, glancing around in case they run across wandering house guests. Any of their extended family Dean stupidly invited to celebrate Christmas with them. “Seriously Cas, why wouldn’t you let me put clothes on? It’s December, it’ll be freezing on the road!”
Cas pauses at the bend of a corner, frowning. “I doubt it’ll be that cold,” he says. Then, feigned innocence fades into a leer. “If it is, I’m sure we can find ways to stay warm inside Baby. Maybe even fog up her windows…?”
“A dog,” Dean shakes his head, cheeks ruddy with restrained laughter. “A no-good, conniving hound!” Stomping ahead of him, Dean leads Cas elsewhere. “I know a quicker way to the garage.”
           “I love you.”
           “I love you, too.”

Another Strange Old House
Morning of May 1, 2022. Sunday.
        Dream # 20,222-03. 1 min 12 sec read.
In an unknown location, Zsuzsanna and I live in an unfamiliar house that we may have moved into recently. I have a false recall about it belonging to our current (real-life) landlord. Our youngest daughter is present but only about a year old, yet she talks coherently and wants to go to a park.
I have to use the bathroom. It is big, but the toilet is unusual. The seat is much higher at the front so that it tips back at a 45-degree angle. It is also more like an elongated oval. The tank is low-set, closer to the floor than the bowl (which would never work in reality). A snowflake design blocks or covers most of the seat. I am puzzled about how other people would use it. I know there is another bathroom in the house, but I do not look for it.
From my left, as I consider whether I should try to use the bizarre toilet, I hear a male voice say, "Hi." I also hear a woman talking. I wonder if the man was addressing me from the house next door. There are thin white curtains on the large windows, but I can see through them and the windows of the other residence. He says "hi" again, but I do not respond. I wonder if they are puzzled by Zsuzsanna and me recently moving into this strange old house. I also consider they may just be talking to each other.
For a few minutes, I watch water flow over the entire wall on the opposite side of the bathroom. It seems to be from a leak that has been like this for a long time. Later, I make an amusing comment to Zsuzsanna about us living in "a house that has its own waterfall."

Track 04 – The Second Son・ Ran
[t/n]: The italics are Ran’s thoughts
[00:00]
*birds chirping*
[00:05]
Ran: Following me all the way to my house is troubling! I’m happy about your feelings but it’s still my private life after all!
Girl 1: That’s because Ran-kun—you haven’t paying attention to us at all lately!
Girl 2: That’s right! As soon as your photoshoot ends, you head straight back home!
Ran: Is that so? I don’t think it’s like that though?
Girl 1: You used to talk to us before…
Girl 2: But nowadays you’re being pretty cold!
Ran: I treat everyone equally—Ah.
*footsteps*
Girl 1: Wait a sec. Ran-kun, are you listening?!
[00:37]
Ran: Welcome back! Did you go shopping? I’ll take your bags.
Ran: *whispering* It’s fine so just play along.
[00:45]
Girl 1: Hey. Who is…that girl?
Ran: Hm? She’s our housekeeper. She recently joined.
Girl 2: Housekeeper?! Holy crap! I’m super jealous‼
Girl 1: Isn’t that unfair?! How nice~! I wanna work in Ran-kun’s house too~‼
Ran: Yes yes. Thank you~! Well, I’m gonna go now so you two be careful on your way back too, okay?
Girl 1: Wha—?! Wait a sec!
Girl 2: You’re kidding! Ran-kun‼
[01:20]
Ran: *sighs* Honestly, coming all the way to a person’s house…it’s troubling, isn’t it?
[01:28]
Ran: Oh they’re my fans. Fans. They wait in the wings for me at job locations or at university and follow me around wherever.
[01:40]
Ran: I’m not at the level of a celebrity! I said this before too but I’m seriously thinking of quitting.
[01:50]
Ran: It’s a waste? What is?
[01:55]
Ran: Hmm… Well, putting on a smile in front of the camera generally works out but it’s not like I’m doing it because I like it. Like the girls from before, there are only people that are solely interested in me for my looks.
Ran: But I guess, it’s easy. Only knowing what I’m like on the outside is fine, after all~!
[02:18]
Ran: Rather than creating a character…I guess you can say I’m just making sure to not get involved in anything troublesome? It’s the best way to make everything go smoothly?
Ran: If I’m smiling, everyone is happy and on top of that they tell me they like me. Then as per their desire, it’s good to stay as their always smiling, ideal Ran-kun, right? My smile is pretty famous, after all.
[02:46]
Ran: Yup. I mean if I do that then everyone—
[02:54]
Ran: Huh?
[02:56]
Ran: For my own sake? What do you mean by that?
[03:05]
Ran: I don’t want to be hated? Me?
Ran: *chuckles* There’s no way it’s like that! I mean, I’m bad with things like ‘like’ and ‘dislike’.
[03: 17]
Ran: Huh? Scared?
[03:24]
Ran: *gasp*
Ran: I didn’t even think of it. That I was scared of being hated.
Ran: No, that’s wrong. I just tried to not notice it. I feel like I actually knew the truth somewhere in my heart. That I absolutely hate the me that’s not needed by anybody and…
Ran: Wait! What’s with this line of thought?! It’s not like me!
[03:58]
Ran: *laughs* Let’s stop, let’s stop~! That’s the end of this depressing talk~!
[04:08]
Ran: Why are you apologizing?
Ran: Well in consideration of that cute face, I’ll forgive you…if you give me kiss.
[04:19]
Ran: Yeah. If you’re gonna apologize then, I’d like you to kiss me a lot with those lovely lips of yours~
[04:28]
Ran: My my, how unfortunate. You’re really strange, aren’t you? I’m telling you to kiss me but you won’t. You’re the only one that’s like that.
[04:41]
Ran: Hmmm~? Then…like all the other girls, if you fall for me, you’ll do it.
[04:52]
Ran: Ehh~? So that’s how it is.
Ran: Is that what it is? What’s different about her from the other girls is that…she has zero interest in me. She doesn’t look at me with greedy upturned eyes or speak to me in a flirty tone. She’s not all over me either. Rather, even if I go after her, she rejects me.
[05:21]
Ran: Hmmm? Then…
Ran: I just need to make you like me.
[05:30]
Ran: Ok ok~! Leave it to me! In order to make you fall for me, Ran-kun will do his best, alright~?
[05:40]
Ran: If she doesn’t have any interest then I’ll just have to draw all of her in. It’s simple. This is a game. And I’ve decided to win this game. After all, I’m desired by anyone and everyone. Because I’m the one everyone loves, Saionji Ran.

Alabama: 2021 Cotton Bowl Champions
Tumblr media
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Have no pity for Cincinnati. The Bearcats wanted to be in the big room with the big boys of college football, and on a big afternoon in Big D they were there, in a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup with the biggest program of them all.
And what happened to the fourth-ranked Bearcats, the first non-Power 5 participant in the eight-year CFP era, was the same fate that has befallen nearly all those who came before them, a roster of brokenhearted teams not from the upstart AAC but hailing from the biggest brand-name, high-dollar conferences.
Yeah, UC, don't feel too bad. Alabama drubbed all of them too.
There will be those who will try to use Cincy's 27-6 loss in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic as a platform for their "No one but Power 5 teams from here on out!" arguments. But anyone who watched Friday's game without that preset attitude saw that Cincinnati, which will be a Big 12 member in the near future, laid enough hard licks and came within a few inches on enough close plays (that near recovery of a muffed Bama punt return late in the second quarter of an 11-point game, argh!) to show that the Bearcats deserved to be in Dallas this New Year's Eve.
"So many of those plays were just inches away," Cincinnati linebacker Joel Dublanko bemoaned after the game. "A couple of missed tackles here and there that really cost us. I think we absolutely belong in this game."
If the current and future members of the CFP selection committee were really watching, then they certainly saw cause to be more open-minded about other outlier teams in the future ... well, at least until the playoff finally expands to include them anyway. Then again, who knows? Before including the Bearcats this year, they seemed to work pretty hard to keep the outsiders, well, outside.
"We weren't carrying the flag for anyone but ourselves," Cincy quarterback Desmond Ridder said after being held to 144 yards passing and minus-6 yards rushing. "We wanted it to end differently, wish it could've ended differently. So I'm hoping there are other so-called Group of 5 teams or teams from any conference that can make it in the playoff and show they can compete with the best of the best."
To be clear, the best of the best is still Alabama, aka the defending national champion. Cincinnati competed with the Tide as well as anyone has, which is to say not so much at all.
This was the sixth time that Bama had opened the CFP as the No. 1 team and faced the No. 4 squad. The Tide are now 5-1 in those games, with the only loss coming to eventual national champ Ohio State in the inaugural 2014 CFP. The next four wins came by double digits, over Michigan State (38-0), Washington (24-7), Oklahoma (45-34) and Notre Dame (31-14). On Friday, Cincinnati became the fifth member of that college football blue-blooded but red-faced club.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban came to the 2021 Cotton Bowl with a 5-0 record at AT&T Stadium at the helm of the Tide, with an 8-3 overall CFP mark, a 64-7 record against non-SEC opponents and a 74-8 tally in nonconference plus postseason games. On Friday, Cincinnati added one more Bama win to each of those records.
So, no, Cincinnati, there is nothing fun about one's bandwagon blowing out all four tires and lurching into a ditch. But perhaps it won't sting so badly when you look around that ditch and realize that your fellow residents of the wreckage also include the likes of Ohio State, Georgia and Clemson.
What might hurt is when the Bearcats go back and look at the film of the biggest bowl appearance in the program's nearly 140-year history. They will see in high definition that Alabama's playbook for Cincy was right out of the Tide's typical nonconference playbook: pounding and punching early and often to wear down the legs and psyches of their opponent's thinner roster by the second half.
The Tide opened the game with 10 consecutive run plays. They ran it 47 times in all, nearly twice the number of pass attempts, and monster trucked their way to an Alabama bowl-record 301 yards rushing. By the second half, some wondered why Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young wasn't a larger part of the Bama game plan. His 17 completions, 28 attempts and 181 yards were his lowest outputs of the season. He also threw only his second interception of the year. But he also threw a trio of touchdown passes, the only three times Alabama reached the end zone all night.
Bama implemented its sleeper-hold offense, slowly choking out Cincinnati by methodically and physically moving the ball and letting Will Anderson Jr. take a highlighter pen to his "Why wasn't I on y'all's Heisman ballots?!" essay. The Tide's defense allowed only six points and 218 yards, only 74 of which came on the ground.
Those who will try to argue that Cincinnati didn't belong in the four-team CFP field will point to Bama's approach as the same one the Tide use to routinely drag down the likes of Southern Miss and Mercer. But it's also how they routinely wear down a lot of big-box SEC opponents, as well as every single one of those previous CFP semifinal foes.
An embarrassing night for Cincinnati? Not a chance. That 2015 Michigan State team would take the Bearcats' loss over its own anytime. For that matter, Georgia might even take it over its collapse against Bama in the SEC championship game one month ago.
The Dawgs will have plenty more chances for revenge against the Tide. So might the Spartans. Let's hope that Cincinnati's Cotton Bowl showing earns the Bearcats another shot somewhere down the road, and if not for them, for the next would-be CFP party-crasher.
"I told them I do not want to see them hang their heads," Cincy coach Luke Fickell said. "Because when you get beat like that, there's times you start to wonder why. We never pointed a finger and won't start to point a finger. Those guys deserve the very best."
On Friday they got it. The best team playing in the middle of the best era ever in the 152-year annals of the sport. No one worth their gridiron salt believes in moral victories. But they damn sure believe in losses that can be used to build toward more actual wins on the scoreboard.
"The only thing we can do is learn," preached Ridder, who in all likelihood has played his last game with the Bearcats. "These guys are going to take it in, watch the film and continue to get better and continue and grow and continue to be a greater Cincinnati team in years to come."
College football would be greater for it.

If it wasn’t for Coach Bryant, we’d by no means have the ability to do what we did. We have been capable of construct on that with nice help.” Alabama quarterback Mac Jones was requested if Saban is the best faculty soccer coach of all time. “Come on, man. How to Start Investing in Peer-to-Peer Loans
Tumblr media
Back in the day, if you needed a personal loan to start a business or finance a wedding you had to go through a bank. But in recent years, a new option has appeared and transformed the lending industry. Peer-to-peer lending makes it easy for consumers to secure financing and gives investors another type of asset to add to their portfolios. If you're interested in investing in something other than stocks, bonds or real estate, check out our guide to becoming an investor in peer-to-peer loans.
What Is Peer-to-Peer Lending?
Peer-to-peer lending is the borrowing and lending of money through a platform without the help of a bank or another financial institution. Typically, an online company brings together borrowers who need funding and investors who put up cash for loans in exchange for interest payments.
Thanks to peer-to-peer lending, individuals who need extra money can get access to personal loans in a matter of days (or within hours in some cases). Even if they have bad credit scores, they may qualify for interest rates that are lower than what traditional banks might offer them. In the meantime, investors can earn decent returns without having to actively manage their investments.
Who Can Invest in Peer-to-Peer Loans
Tumblr media
You don't necessarily have to be a millionaire or an heiress to start investing in peer-to-peer loans. In some cases, you'll need to have an annual gross salary of at least $70,000 or a net worth of at least $250,000. But the rules differ depending on where you live and the site you choose to invest through.
For example, if you're investing through the website Prosper, you can't invest at all if you reside in Arizona or New Jersey. In total, only people in 30 states can invest through Prosper and only folks in 45 states can invest through its competitor, Lending Club.
Certain sites, like Upstart and Funding Circle, are only open to accredited investors. To be an accredited investor, the SEC says you need to have a net worth above $1 million or an annual salary above $200,000 (unless you're a company director, an executive officer or you're part of a general partnership). Other websites that work with personal loan investors include SoFi, Peerform and CircleBack Lending.
Keep in mind that there may be limitations regarding the degree to which you can invest. According to Prosper's site, if you live in California and you're spending $2,500 (or less) on Prosper notes, that investment cannot be more than 10% of your net worth. Lending Club has the same restrictions, except that the 10% cap applies to all states.
Becoming an Investor
If you meet the requirements set by the website you want to invest through (along with any other state or local guidelines), setting up your online profile is a piece of cake. You can invest through a traditional account or an account for your retirement savings, if the site you're visiting gives you that option.
After you create your account, you'll be able to fill your investment portfolio with different kinds of notes. These notes are parts of loans that you'll have to buy to begin investing. The loans themselves may be whole loans or fractional loans (portions of loans). As borrowers pay off their personal loans, investors get paid a certain amount of money each month.
If you don't want to manually choose notes, you can set up your account so that it automatically picks them for you based on the risk level you're most comfortable with. Note that there will likely be a minimum threshold that you'll have to meet. With Lending Club and Prosper, you can invest with just $25. With a site like Upstart, you have to be willing to spend at least $100 on a note.
Should I Invest in Peer-to-Peer Loans?
Tumblr media
Investing in personal loans may seem like a foreign concept. If you're eligible to become an investor, however, it might be worth trying.
For one, investing in personal loans isn't that difficult. Online lenders screen potential borrowers and ensure that the loans on their sites abide by their rules. Investors can browse through notes and purchase them.
Thanks to the automatic investing feature that many sites offer, you can sit back and let an online platform manage your investment account for you. That can be a plus if you don't have a lot of free time. Also, by investing through a retirement account, you can prepare for the future and enjoy the tax advantages that come with putting your money into a traditional or Roth IRA.
As investments, personal loans are less risky than stocks. The stock market dips from time to time and there's no guarantee that you'll see a return on your investments. By investing in a peer-to-peer loan, you won't have to deal with so much volatility and you're more likely to see a positive return. Lending Club investors, for example, have historically had returns between 5.26% and 8.69%.
But investing in peer-to-peer loans isn't for everyone. The online company you're investing through might go bankrupt. The folks who take out the loans you invest in might make late payments or stop paying altogether.
All of that means you could lose money. And since these loans are unsecured, you can't repossess anything or do much to recoup your losses.
You can lower your investment risk by investing in different loans. That way, if someone defaults, you can still profit from the loan payments that the other borrowers make. But if you don't have enough loans in your portfolio you're putting yourself in a riskier predicament.
Final Word
If you're looking for a way to add some diversity to your portfolio, investing in peer-to-peer loans might be something to think about. There are plenty of benefits that you can reap with this kind of investment. Before setting up an account, however, it's important to be aware of the risks you'll be taking on.

New top story from Time: Here’s What It’s Like in the Bahamas After It Was Devastated by Hurricane Dorian
Bahamians are scrambling to respond to a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane that the nation’s Prime Minister has described as a “historic tragedy” since the slow-moving storm made landfall Sunday. Hurricane Dorian has claimed at least 20 lives and destroyed many buildings, especially on the islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco.
Governments and nonprofits from are offering money, workers and other aid to help with the rescue and recovery effort. According to the Red Cross, about 45% of the homes on Grand Bahama and Abaco — about 13,000 houses — are believed to be severely damaged or destroyed as a result of the storm, and some 62,000 people will need clean drinking water, the Associated Press reports. U.N. officials said that more than 60,000 people will need food assistance.
At the same time, Bahamians have carried out their own efforts to account for loved ones, posting frantic photos and notes on Facebook and WhatsApp begging for word about missing friends and family members.
Here’s what to know about the devastation the Bahamas is facing now that Dorian has roared through.
What is the hurricane’s death toll?

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said at a press conference Wednesday that at least 20 people have been confirmed dead after the storm — and warned that the number of dead may rise. He declined to give specific details about the deceased.
“So many families have been impacted by the devastation, including those trapped during the storm,” Minnis said Wednesday. “Just about every Bahamian throughout the country has been worried about loved ones on Grand Bahama and Abaco.”
How bad is the destruction?

Much of the severe damage appears to be concentrated on the Abaco islands, a chain of islands in the northern Bahamas known as a boating destination. The Prime Minister said Tuesday that parts of Abaco are 60% destroyed.
Local communities within the Abaco islands have reported significant damage. A community known as The Mudd, which was built over time by Haitian immigrants, was “razed” by the storm, according to the AP. Most of the houses in Marsh Harbour, one of the largest towns in Abaco, were destroyed by the storm, the Miami Herald has reported.
Minnis said that most homes on Grand Bahama seem to have sustained “minor damage,” and he said he’s personally seen damage to homes, infrastructure and other buildings.
The Bahamas’ southern islands, including its capital, Nassau, were not affected by the storm.
The Category 5 hurricane was both powerful and slow-moving. When it made landfall, Hurricane Dorian had sustained winds of up to 185 mph. Moving as slowly as 1 or 2 mph, the hurricane arrived in the Bahamas on Sunday and did not have the all-clear until Wednesday morning.
What are the relief efforts?
Other countries, private companies and nonprofits have mobilized to support the relief effort in the Bahamas, although the nation has faced challenges as it’s worked to prepare airports and a harbor damaged by the storm into a position to receive much-needed support.
Ravelle Dean, a volunteer with the Bahamas’ National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) who is designated to speak on behalf of the agency, tells TIME that two of Abaco’s three airports are now open to private planes. The Sandy Point Airport was unaffected by the storm, and Marsh Harbour was reopened on Thursday morning. Treasure Cay Airport is open only to rescue and recovery helicopters.
However, aircraft need to receive permits from NEMA to enter the airports, and the agency has been “inundated” with calls, Dean says.
“There’s definite frustration on some people’s ends,” she adds. “We’re trying to go as fast as we can.”
The U.S. Coast Guard has sent crews to help with the relief response; as of Thursday morning, the Coast Guard said it had rescued 135 people and six pets in the Bahamas since the beginning of the storm. The Coast Guard also provided a helicopter for Prime Minister Minnis to survey the aftermath of the storm.

The United Nations has pledged $1 million in aid, and the U.N. World Food Program has bought eight tons of ready-to-eat meals that it is working to bring to the Bahamas. Canada has also pledged $500,000 to the relief effort, according to Minnis.
Carnival Cruise Line has partnered with Tropical Shipping and NEMA to bring food and supplies donated in Florida to the Bahamas. The Micky and Madeleine Arison Family Foundation and Carnival pledged $2 million to recovery and relief effort; Disney Cruise Line also pledged $1 million to relief efforts, Minnis said.

Facebook Privacy Scandal – A Privacy Breach That Calls For The First Information Privacy Law In The U.S.
Ashley Zhu, Vanderbilt University Class of 2022
May 21, 2019
Tumblr media
Are you using Facebook? If yes, have you ever worried that the comments or photos you posted on Facebook would be harvested by third party businesses without your consent? Have you ever worried that your private information would be leveraged as bargaining chips on the table of big tech companies? Or have you worried that your personal data would be used by politicians to influence election results?
If you have had those worries, unfortunately, there is evidence that your concerns have become reality. Facebook has been stuck in a series of privacy scandalsfor two years and is currently under federal investigation[1]. According to Business Insider, Facebook asked for email passwords and "harvested the email contacts of 1.5 million users without their knowledge or consent”when new users set up their Facebook account [2]. In addition, according to about 4,000 pages of leaked company documents, Facebook leveraged users’ personal data as bargaining chips to consolidate partnerships and combat competitors [3]. In order to develop and maintain partnerships, Facebook rewarded “favored companies by giving them access to the data of its users”[3]. For example, Facebook gave “Microsoft's search engine Bing access to see all of a user's friends without the user's consent, let Netflix and Spotify read a user's private messages and allowed Amazon to gather names and contact information”due to the money it spent on Facebook advertising and its partnership with Facebook to launch the Fire smartphone [4]. In order to combat competitors, “Facebook denied access to user data for a messaging app that had grown too popular and was viewed as a competitor, according to the documents.” [3]
Despite those disturbingprivacy violations that affect millions of users, one of the most infamous Facebook privacy leak is the Cambridge Analytica Scandal. In the scandal, a personality test on Facebook collected the data of 305,000 people who took the test and the public data of up to 87 million people whowere Facebook friends of those who took the test. The data was then sold to Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy firm that allegedly used the data to psychologically profile U.S. voters. [5]

In spite of the series of Facebook privacy breach that tremendously undermine users’ privacy rights, the U.S. has no comprehensive information privacy lawsin effect currently. The absence of such a law makes it challenging for the federal government to regulatebig tech companies and penalize those breaking the privacy laws in order to protect people’s privacy rights.Given that there is no federal information privacy law in effect,Facebook’s data collection and handling practicesin the U.S. areonly regulated by the 2011 agreement between Facebook and the Federal Trade Commission.
To understand how the U.S. government regulates Facebook in the privacy arena, it is essential to introduce the Federal Trade Commission, its responsibilities and authorities, and its reaction to the recent Facebook privacy lapses. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is a federal agency with investigative and law enforcement authority to enforce both consumer protection and antitrust laws [6]. The consumer protection statutes enforced by the FTC grant it authority to regulate “unfair or deceptive acts or practices” (15 U.S.C. Sec. 45(a)(1)). In particular, the FTC’s enforcement power over “unfair practices” gives it authority to regulate and penalize big tech companies such as Facebook that commit privacy breaches. Following an investigation, theFTC may initiate an enforcement action if it has "reason to believe" that the law is being or has been violated [6].
In response to the series of Facebook’s privacy violations, the FTC has conducted an investigation and “renewed their calls for Congress to create a national privacy law that would regulate how big tech companies like Facebook and Google collect and handle user data” on May, 8th[7].If Congress responds to the FTC’s appeal by enacting the country’s first comprehensive information privacy law, the FTC will be granted more authority and policing power to regulate big tech companies while protectingpeople’s privacy rights.
Compared to the U.S. that has not passed any national information privacy laws, the EU passed General Data Protection Regulation that will go into effect on May, 25th. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the outdated 1995 Data Protection Directive and “restricts the way businesses collect, store and export people’s personal data” [8].
GDPR highlights users’ consent, articulating that “processing personal data is generally prohibited, unless it is expressly allowed by law, or the data subject has consented to the processing” [9]. In order to ensure users give their consent voluntarily without ambiguity, GDPR requires companies to “replace long terms and conditions filled with legalese with simple-to-digest consent requests”[8]. Users are also given the “right to be forgotten,”“which means companies must delete someone’s data if they withdraw their consent for it to be held” [8]. The companies are also obliged by GDPR to make the process of withdrawing consent as easy as giving consent [8].
Moreover, GDPR prohibits companies from “collecting extra information at the point of sign-up just in case;” instead, they have to collect data for a specific business purpose and make the data subject informed about the purpose and how they will make use of the data [8]. If this requirement had taken effect prior to the privacy breach whereFacebookharvested the email contacts of 1.5 million users when they opened their Facebook account, it would have prevented this data violation effectively.
Finally, GDPR allows the regulators to fine up to 4% of the companies’ global revenue. Therefore, ifFacebook whose global revenue is $55.8 billion in 2018 breaks the terms of GDPR after it takes effect on May, 25th, it will face a fine of up to $2.2 billion [10]. The fine will bepredominantlyhigher than the highest fine Facebook has ever received for a privacy breach– the fine UK imposed on Facebook for the Cambridge Analytica Scandal which was merely£500,000($645,150) [11].
The emphasis on users’ consent, stricter conditions on data collection, and heavy fines dictated by GDPR provide greater protection for the privacy rights of the EU residents. In general, GDPR is one of the strictest information privacy laws in effect in the world. Thus, it provides a good example that American legislators can model the country’s first information privacy law after by learning from its effectiveness and avoiding its potential drawbacks after GDPR takes effect on May, 25th
It is obvious that a strict U.S. information privacy law comparable to GDPR is desperately in need to protect the privacy rights of U.S. users. The absence of such a law contributes to an imbalance between the power of big tech companies and that of users by giving companies unchecked freedom to collect user data and regulators feeble policing power to regulate and fine the data misuse. However, the good news is that the FTC is calling for the enactment of the country’s first information privacy law in the testimony before the Congress. It is easy to envision how the law will drastically challenge the imbalance of power by giving users much more protection against data collection without their giving consent. Hopefully, GDPR and the enactment of the first information privacy law in the U.S. will be the first step towards hope for privacy protection in the social media age.

in stormcast you mentioned that every other johnny is bi/pan but ults johnny is gay and also mentioned that you went through a lot of careful examination to come to that conclusion? is there anything that stands out about why ults johnny is clearly more boy leaning? (i really ought to start signing the, what, four anons ive asked about ults johnny as like ultimate anon or something im really just very desperate for people to actually talk about 1610)
Hi Ultimate Johnny anon! I’m more than happy to chat about 1610 with you – I think ultimately (badumpsh) we’re going to have to do a proper 1610 Johnny issue of Stormcast, when I can mention Ultimate Marvel without prompting the Yuuhy edition of “we need to delete 45 minutes of this.” So as per usual “careful examination” means “a lot of twitter conversation between your @johnnystormcast hosts and also @teenbrigade“ but yeah okay I’m about to scan the text waaaay too closely for a sec. Here’s my reasoning behind the headcanon:
So first off, while 616 Johnny has a truly disastrous love life, Ultimate Johnny has basically no love life. Two issues is a long relationship for him and he has no actual serious relationships. He expresses a lot of interest in girls initially within his story, but with one notable exception that I’m going to get to later, it’s entirely on the physical side. (Again, as opposed to 616 Johnny, who wants to Fall In True Love and Get Married. I have a lot of thoughts about 616 Johnny and the typical male superhero model but that is another post entirely.) As one of his girlfriends notes, “It’s like your afraid of your own feelings.”
Tumblr media
But with guys? Ultimate Johnny pays a lot of attention to guys. He comments to Ben that his eyes are the same before and after the accident, which is notable because Johnny knew Ben for like five whole minutes before they were transformed, so he must have really been looking at his face in those five minutes. Later, when Ben is pursuing Liz Allan, who has fire powers in Ultimate Marvel, Johnny asks him if it’s not some sort of weird power transference thing and it’s not him Ben’s really in love with. When Ben molts his rocky shell, Johnny as well as Sue (who would propose marriage to Ben at the end of this story) gets touchy. (Ask me about how the Storms have similar taste in men, a totally different post altogether.)
Tumblr media
And then there’s Peter. Ultimate Johnny adores Spider-Man like, from the first minute. At the bonfire on the beach in Ultimate Spider-Man #68 (a group date, which is Ultimate Johnny’s favorite kind of date, and I’m going to get to that), he says “I love that guy” when Spider-Man comes up in conversation. He’s awestruck and impressed by Spider-Man when they meet face-to-mask for the first time (which is specifically on Mary Jane’s suggestion that Peter should go cheer Johnny up). Peter is Johnny’s inspiration to use his powers to help other people. Later, after the mask comes off, he uses Peter as an excuse to get out of a date he doesn’t want to be on and generally seems to want to be around him, showing up at his school after a bad date and going to the beach with Peter’s group of friends.
After his father dies in the Ultimatum wave and the Fantastic Four break up, Johnny disappears for a while. When he makes his return (exhausted and beaten up, something that’s never explained) it’s to Peter’s house in Queens, not to his sister. Peter seems to give him a sense of security – he’d rather repeat high school and live with three other teenagers in Queens than go stay with Sue in her science tower.
Tumblr media
Look at how cute this hug is.
In fact, the only girl 1610 Johnny displays 616 Johnny’s tendency to go “hi we just met but I LOVE YOU and we should GET MARRIED I’ve already named our 8 children which I will stay-at-home parent” is Ultimate Jessica Drew, who is not the 1610 counterpart of 616 Jessica Drew but instead a clone of Peter Parker.
Tumblr media
Johnny doesn’t know she’s Peter’s clone but he does know she’s a spider-powered brunette and at one point asks Peter if she’s his cousin, so I think it’s fair to say the resemblance to Peter probably plays into things here.
After Peter’s death, instead of staying with May Parker (like Gwen does) or returning home, he goes with Bobby Drake (another resident of May Parker’s Home For Wayward Youths) to Kitty’s mutant underground in the Morlock tunnels, where his main connection is to Bobby.
Ultimate Johnny also really, really, really likes double-dating. He mostly suggests it with Peter and Bobby, but he went on a double date early in Ultimate Fantastic Four with Ben&Alicia where Alicia set him up with one of her friends. He proceeded to be completely uninterested in Alicia’s friend.
On the last double date we see him go on (which is almost certainly the last double date period, since after Peter’s death Bobby and Johnny join the mutant underground, ultimately leading to Johnny’s capture and imprisonment), he has this conversation with Bobby while walking home:
Tumblr media
“But would you want to kiss a girl who only wanted to make out with you because you were Iceman?” is some pretty big character development for a guy who claimed to be a totally different celebrity to score a date with a girl at the beginning of Ultimate Fantastic Four. Notably at this point we don’t really see Johnny pay romantic attention to any girl. So I do headcanon that Ultimate Johnny used double dates as a way to go on a date with a guy he liked (primarily Peter and Bobby) without ever actually having to ask the guy out.
I think a lot of Ultimate Johnny’s story is about him learning what he actually wants: his desire to be around people his own age (USM 68), his desire to be a superhero (USM 69), his desire to live with Peter and May Parker and to have a normal, stable life, and I think ultimately his desire to be romantically involved with a man. But also the Ultimate universe is dead now and Johnny was pretty much totally out of the picture by the end of it so. Jazz hands.
