The Kings English Bookstore is home to many authors in Utah and it has been hit hard by Covid-19. She asks for us to support them or your local indie bookstore!!!

November 14, there is going to be an author extravaganza to support TKE Bookstore

Shortly after the False Prince came out, she was still a very new author, she got a tweet from R.L. Stine, author of Goosebumps saying how much he loved TFP. She was so excited and she wanted to thank him personally but didn't know his name, and he had called her Jennifer so she didn't want to say Mr. Stine.So she ended up just saying, thanks!

Book 5 is due to her editor Monday (October 5, 2020) and she said she would be finishing this (the launch) then getting right back to it!

She showed her open project folders (there are a LOT)

Working on a World War 1 story and she showed history books she is reading such as History of the World War, A World Undone, and Weird War One.

One of her new works is about a kid with no memory, a magic sharpie, and a dice game called Boggle that sometimes talks to him and he sees a message in the dice: “they know ur here go”

Disney, book to movie adaptation possibilities? She'd be fine with it if they asked. She wants it to be made right. She wants someone who comes to at it with a fan’s perspective.

Paramount Pictures had optioned the rights to the False Prince, what happened? When you have a contract, every six months they have to decide whether to extend, cancel, or make the movie. As her six months was coming up, they fired their CEO, so everything evaporated.

How does it affect you emotionally when one of your characters goes through something traumatic or extremely challenging? She has a background in theatre and she comes to writing from a theatrical perspective. It plays out in her head like it's on stage so she becomes every character. She goes through everything with her characters, she feels it, she dreads it, she feels awful, but she's learned that “Most of us are in this stasis of being where we are just comfortable being exactly who we are and when something hard happens to us, even if we hate it, it forces us to grow. The hard thing creates heroes. So my characters start out believing they are just ordinary people, but when I do the hard things, my characters become very heroic characters. I do hard things to them because I love watching them grow.” I had to include this quote because it was so great

Favorite background character who you think gets overlooked a lot? Kerwyn, he is one of the very few stable things in the lives of the main characters, he is just good, strong, and loyal. Amarinda, she’s ok with being overlooked but she is so strong and intelligent.

Characters based on yourself? Not really, she doesn't think she is interesting enough to write about, but Sage, like her, is left handed, climbs, and has her sense of humor. She relates closely to the main character from the Scourge, Ani, and sees a lot of herself in her, but didn't base Ani on herself, they just have a lot in common.

Jen discussed how she plots out her books and how many drafts she goes through: she's got to know the twist so she can layout the hints. She shows an example of a chart of how much each character and what the reader knows. She rewrites a lot and feels it come together. First rewrite is fixing major plot issues. Second, logic. Dialogue. Description. Word choice. Could be 10-15 drafts before her editor sees it, who sees things Jen missed.

Have your characters ever taken you by surprise (with twists)? The ending of Mark of the Thief book one, she didn't expect, so she had to make some changes. Usually on top of it, and has something called the Rule of Five. Has a general idea, and makes herself come up with five possible ways the idea could play out. 1, usually pretty predictable. 5, usually really weird. 2, 3, and 4 she really gets creative. “Limitations are the mother of creativity.”

How she gets her character names: baby name books and websites (Imogen and Tobias). Symbolic, Sage (wise, a way for him to stick it to his dad and say he has wisdom), Connor (con man), Jaron (teenage boy she knew who was just a great person and outstanding kid, and if we had royalty in our country he would be a prince). Put sounds together, places, Amarinda, Mott, Roden, Kerwyn. (She also gave an example for writers to use: UTAH, UTAR, TUTAR, TOTAR, TOTARA, city of Totara!!)

She explained how she does her fantasy world building and it is mainly based on what she will need in the plot (ie Carthya is landlocked, mountains to the north, waterways that would be needed, it is resource wealthy making it desirable, etc)

Culture and religion in world building: how many gods or none? saints and devils! causing good and bad things in your life. Sage feels like he is constantly being harassed by the devils. It became a social thing in the world.

Would she want to live there [in Carthya]? Sometimes, but not in the last book that she is editing now!! *wink*

TCK trailer: created by her family, particularly her son, Chase, and the voiceover was her son in law. Chase wanted to do something different and take a risk.

Your career as an author? When she started writing she knew nothing and nobody just had a manuscript that was ‘awful’ and will be buried with her. (I personally would read ANYTHING she wrote). She submitted her second one to “every agent with a pulse” and everyone said no. She wrote a new one, they said no. Fourth manuscript, she felt ready to break in, Apprentice to a Madman, she thought it was the best thing ever, submitted it and got a rejection scribble, not a letter, worked on it and kept getting rejected. One publisher had rep for taking everybody so she sent in hers. A couple months later, on her birthday, she got a call from a friend that they got an acceptance letter from the same publisher as she had submitted hers, got her own… rejected…She thought a lot about it and decided to erase everything she thought she knew about publishing and once she had a new idea, that manuscript got her agent and first publisher. That letter on her birthday was the last rejection letter she received. “Remember you can start from nowhere and find success.”

When asked for descriptions of the characters so an artist can draw them, she said, they look like how you envision them, there is no ‘right’. (Shows fanart from the competition that is on her blog!)

TCK art print was created by her niece, Ireland. It is her concept of the characters.

Writing during covid and quarantine? She's a strong believer that when God closes a door, he opens a window. She misses the opportunities to be in schools and bookshops. Just discovered a new WW2 true story she is researching. Various stories at different stages. Very excited for stories she has created because of Covid. “We will get through this, we will, and we're going to be stronger at the end because remember, when we go through hard things we get stronger."

Here’s the thing: Tony will die alone.

He will die alone surrounded by friends who have all found love and look into their partner’s (or partners’) eyes with loving adoration, like they hung the moon. They will get pets and potentially have kiddos of their own and everything will be fine and Uncle Tony will be there and crack jokes and be the cool uncle but secretly he wants someone or some people to love so he won’t go home alone from social events and look at himself in the mirror and wonder why he can’t have that.

He’s kind of accepted it at this point. Maybe it is how it is meant to be! He could find loneliness to be appealing. It means he won’t have to share the covers.

It means he won’t look at someone and say “let’s go home” softly, when the party dies down.

(He can go home whenever he wants!)

It means he won’t cook breakfast in the morning for his significant other(s) and make a smiley face with chocolate chips.

(Or blueberries! He doesn’t have to worry about anyone else’s dietary restrictions!)

He won’t look at a store and find something perfect for his someone and grin to himself and say “perfect” and smile throughout the whole thing.

(He...he doesn’t have anything to say about that. He is a billionaire, after all.)

Bucky and Sam think Tony is the biggest idiot of all. He’s not going to die alone, not by far. Everyone loves him too much and is too observant for that.

Everyone thought this was a completely ridiculous idea. Of course, no one else had any other idea because Pepper and Sharon were out on “business” (they packed bikinis, they were not) and no one else with sense was in.

So they host a meeting a-la-intervention.

Thor is very pleased. He brought snacks.

“This is half of a strawberry,” Steve says, looking at Thor.

“We make do with what we are given,” Thor says sagely.

“Half a strawberry!” Clint yells, dive-bombing to grab it.

“I hate this fucking family,” Natasha mutters. “Can we just like. Not do this?”

“You didn’t have any other ideas, so no,” Thor says.

He made a PowerPoint presentation.

Tony has to sit down.

“W-what is this?”

“It’s your intervention,” Clint says solemnly. “We’re here to stop you from being a dumbass.”

“I have seven PhD’s.”

“I have eight,” Bruce argues.

“Claiming you have two in being a, quote, ‘bad bitch’ does not mean you have eight,” Tony says.

“Says the man with seven whereas I have eight.”

“This isn’t the point,” Thor reminds them. “The point is Tony, you are very, very blind to other people’s affections.”

“We think you’re legally stupid,” Steve offers.

“Coming from you Steve, that means nothing,” Tony remarks. “You thought you could bake a cake in fifteen minutes.”

“Technically, I was right.”

“No you weren’t.”

Clint clears his throat.

He has a pointer-stick.

Of fucking course he does.

“Why is this what it takes?” Sam complains, getting up and shoving Clint into a chair.

“Tony, here is empirical evidence,” Bucky says.

“Do you know what that means?” Natasha asks.

“What do I look like, someone with a fancy degree on their wall? Get real,” Bucky scoffs. “Anyways, back to our presentation.”

“Tony, we have both liked you since about six months ago,” Sam starts out. “And have been dropping hints since the end of month one. Friday has evidence.”

Tony looks confused.

To ease his confusion, Bucky clicks on the next slide.

“You will notice on these two pictures, both Sam and I have the stupidest, softest grins on our faces. These were both directed at you, as evidenced in the next slide.”

“In conclusion, there are a variety of phrases that can be utilized from this point forward, if you are amenable to us taking you out on many dates and potentially talking about your ass in an interview for ten minutes onwards.”

“Wouldn’t they cut you off?” Clint asks.

“Absolutely not, I’m Captain America,” Sam says.

“What am I, chopped liver?” Steve asks.

“No, you’re trying to relearn how to be an art student so you can have an exhibit and ban Anish Kapoor,” Bruce answers.

“That’s not why I’m in art school. I can afford it now, and I think--”

“No, that’s it,” Bruce cuts him off. “For my own personal gain, that’s it.”

(Pepper and Sharon are both very mad that they missed out on this whole presentation.)

Tony grins softly at them.

“You’re both...you’re serious?”

“I did not pick Helvetica font for nothing!” Bucky declares.

“I also know how to cook obscene amounts of food and all with love,” Sam says. “So?”

“Yes,” Tony says finally, smiling widely. “Absolutely.”

The team lets out a collective sigh of relief.

Steve starts up.

“Bruce, I really don’t think you get the point of expressing yourself in art--”

“Shut up shut up shut up,” Bruce starts. “I’m an Ohio native, you legally can’t do this to me.”

“Do you even know the law...?”

“No I’m bisexual, I don’t need to know anything,” Bruce declares.

“How am I in love with you,” Thor mutters. “How.”

“Let’s go,” Tony says softly.

1. What is their favorite food?Molly’s favorite food is Sugar Bombs cereal! She has a huge sweet tooth and never goes anywhere without a box or two.

2. Do they have a fear of an animal? If so, what animal?Casy is afraid of dogs, she’s not sure why she just prefers to be around birds.

3. What do they wear to bed?Though it may be unpractical, August wears not even one thing to bed. She has no shame and doesn’t care if anyone sees her unclothed, it does however surprise would be attackers though no one would be stupid enough to attack August.

4. Do they like cuddling?Micah absolutely loves it, John does too but he’s less likely to admit it. If she could, Micah would keep John in bed all day and boy has she tried.

8. What are their good and bad traits?Michelle is fiercely loyal and protective of her friends and family but can also be stubborn and hot-headed, especially when Jim tells her she can’t do something, she’ll go out and do it anyway. Like father like daughter as they say!

9. Do they have any artistic talent?Casy is quite a good painter! She prefers landscapes and animals however and if she ever has a spare moment she’s always painting or sketching. Faye (my other cp77 oc) is my other artistic girl, I haven’t said much about her yet but she does dabble in the arts. I imagine she would be the one painting Night City in graffiti.

Lillian is a singer as well, she didn’t gain much traction on the surface but did make quite the name for herself in Rapture!

10. What is their favorite room to be in, in the house they live in?Micah’s favorite room in the ranch is the living room. She spends a good chunk of her days doing paperwork spread out in front of the huge fireplace.

12. Can they do magic?It’s not magic really but Casy can control the Bliss sort of like Faith does although not to that extent.

15. What was the last thing they cried about?Ayla has a habit of staying up too long and not sleeping and when that happens, she gets very emotionally loopy. One instance is when she hadn’t slept more than 3 hours in one entire weekend, saw a sad video online and promptly broke down, passing out of exhaustion shortly after.

17. Do they have a best friend? If so, who, and what makes them their best friend?Nearly all of them have best friends but I love talking about Ayla and Marv! Marv is@colesphelps​ dc OC and I adore them together. They’re both college students, dorks and have powers. AJ and I actually were talking about them one night how exhausted they always are because they have to deal with being heroes and also college kids, and that they tend to fall asleep in the wackiest places (Ayla in the Gotham University fountain once for example). The other students have begun to take bets on where either of them are going to pass out next.

I don’t know why but I think they’re my favorite pair.

18. Have they ever been in a romantic relationship?Sure! Micah is engaged to John, in an AU Casy is with Faith, August is in love with@statichvm​‘s OC Charley, Lillian used to date Atlas in the good old days, and Ghost is rumored to have had a girlfriend at one point…

19. What does their relationship with their family look like? Are they close? Distant? Ect.Michelle is very close to Jim! He pushes her buttons at times but she loves him so much, and she loves El just as much when she enters the picture. Mick had missed being a big sister since the death of Sara.

20. Do they have a pet?Molly never lets Dogmeat leave her side, she loves him to bits and he loves her! Ghost has a little grey kittie that used to belong so above rumored girlfriend. August has an all-black Doberman that is her pride and joy and I wouldn’t call them pets really but wherever Casy goes, a flock of crows seems to follow her…

❀ Yooo I was bad and didn’t actually do anything at 500, so here I am at 550 instead!

I figured it’s time to show some positivity/shout outs for my great mutuals, and everyone I interact with! Before I start the (very) long list, I’d just like to say thanks to everyone who follows this blog and puts up with my constant inactivity, lots of OOC, tons of incoherencies, and then of course the RPing on this blog!

I’ve truly enjoyed running this blog, even despite my anxiety and constant mood jumps that have come with it. I’ve truly enjoyed meeting people through this, even if I no longer talk with them or they have left tumblr. I love being able to talk with those that I’ve met and interacted with though, and you’ve all no doubt had huge impacts on me that I will forever be grateful for! I honestly have no clue where I’d be without you all. While I still am struggling a bit with a few things, everyone that I talk with is helpful and supportive which honestly is so kind??? This blog and those I’ve met through it have helped me through when I’ve been feeling down and feeling awful, and I can’t say how thankful I am for it.

Also, I highly recommend following all those that I list, as they’re all quality RPers and people that I enjoy talking and interacting with! ❀

I love ur writing of Flat and Jack, and honestly I’ve fallen in love with them both because of your amazing portrayals and it got me to finally start SF and the Case Files.
