Earth Sucks, Steal a Spaceship
And thatās the premise of Joyride, a bright, energetic, fun comic from BOOM! Studios that I am currently devouring. YOU SHOULD READ IT TOO. Come for the punky, vibrant art (colorist @kniivilaās work is on beautiful display here) and stay for the awesome characters, who I will introduce to you right now:
This is Uma. She is fed up with Earthās ruling fascist regime, which keeps humanity bundled away beneath a āsafeskyā to protect them from the horrors of space. Sheās had enough and sheās getting out.
Meet Umaās best friend, Dewydd (pronounced dah-vyth, I think), the most precious tech expert and resident hugger.
Hereās Catrin. Yes, sheās always this grumpy. But sometimes she dances. She didnāt mean to steal a ship and go joyriding across the cosmos but, well, here we are. (Do I ship her with Uma? Yes. Is there actual on-page support for this ship? YES.)
Kolstakās been wandering space for longer than any of the human characters have been alive. Heās equal parts exasperated and... okay, actually heās just 100% exasperated at all times.
Meet Bot, aka Spindles, who communicates mainly through emoji speech bubbles and gestures. Bot is the ship, and the ship is awesome.
Thatās everyone (so far)! If these awesome folks havenāt convinced you to read Joyride, perhaps you will be interested to know that itās written by @jacksonlanzingā and Collin Kelly, of Batman and Robin Eternal and Grayson, and drawn by @marcustoā of Nightwing (And now youāre all going āOh, THATāS how she ended up reading this,ā but youāre WRONG, itās because Pat Rothfuss recommended it, SO THERE ... ... though Iām not gonna lie, seeing those creds moved it up my list way faster. You all know how I feel about Nightwing by now.)
If your library is a Hoopla library, you can download volume one right here. Otherwise, check your local library shelves and comic book shops, and have fun!
See more of Robinās recs...

Meet top startups from Alchemist Class 17
New Post has been published on http://secondcovers.com/meet-top-startups-from-alchemist-class-17/
Meet top startups from Alchemist Class 17
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Yesterday Alchemist Accelerator, best known for working with enterprise startups, held its 17th demo day at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) in Menlo Park, California. Twenty-four startups pitched ideas ranging from personalized genomics to hard tech spinouts from Stanfordās Linear Accelerator.Ā
Rather than expound upon all twenty-four I worked with Alchemist to bring you a top five list of startups that pitched. These startups received the most investor interest at the event and are all poised to do some interesting things in the near future.
Terbine : First Commercial Exchange for IoT Data. Team: ā David Knight (2 IPOs, 2 Buyouts); Brian Enochson (AT&T, Time-Warner/HBO); Ben Grossmann (Academy Award for Visual Effects).
Most IoT startups are focusing on devices. Terbine is purely interested in the data. They are aiming to build a commercial exchange for the massive amounts of machine-generated data coming from all the IoT sensors. The team has built scalable transaction platforms in the past, including having authored HBOās metadata protocol. The city of Las Vegas has already signed up to use their platform.
Deep Science AI :Ā Human-In-The-Loop AI Platform for Active Threat Detection Inside of Retail Businesses and Public Spaces. Team: Sean Huver (PhD Physicist, veteran of DARPA projects), Sam Tkach (CS Columbia).
Human monitoring of security cameras in retail outlets is too expensive (and not a fun job). Deep Science thinks computers can do a better job, and for 1/10th the price. Retail outlets with poor security are targets of repeat attacks ā gas stations with reputations for poor security enforcement will be robbed every 6 weeks. AI-assisted human enforcement may be the solution, and this team of a trio of engineers from Princeton, Columbia, and UCLA may have the tech to do it.
Quantum Insights : Stanford Linear Accelerator spinout that Finds Hidden Meaning in Complex Data Using Physics and Quantum Mechanics. Team : Marvin Weinstein (Physics, Stanford Faculty), Bernard Chen (VP/GM Scopely and KIXEYE, UCLA MBA).
The deepest tech of the bunch, Quantum Insights is a spinout of Stanfordās Linear Accelerator Center, and includes a Nobel Laureate among its advisors. Using algorithms born out of fundamental research from physics and quantum mechanics, the company can get insight into complicated data sets that other methods canāt see. Big health tech companies like Biogen andĀ Chan Zuckerbergās Biohub have already signed up to use the tech to discover drugs. And the company has also been getting pinged by Fintech companies for big data applications as well.
Shop On SecondCovers
Acuity.AI :Ā Software Service that Uses Breakthrough AI-Technology to Enable Commerce through Video by Making Videos Shoppable. RaviKiran Gopalan (Product lead for 10+ yrs in High Tech., PhD in EE, Stanford GSBā17), Charles Han (AI and Computer Vision expert, Stanford MS in EE)
Acuity wants to make videos shoppable. Although this idea has been around for a while, no one has pulled it off yet. Acuity believes itās because the AI has only now become good enough to pull it off. And this duo founding team ā including a Stanford-educated Disney engineer and an engineering doctorate from Qualcomm ā may have the technical chops to do it. Chubbies is an early customer and has seen a 35% lift is shoppers adding items to their carts using Acuityās tech.
Zenith Aerospace :Ā 24/7 Live Earth Monitoring by Solar Unmanned Aircraft Of Perpertual Flight. ā Raphael Nardari (Airbus,Cytec,Researcher at Stanford, Experts in Aircraft Strucutre and Advanced Battery), Yitao Zhuang (Intuitive Surgical, Phd In Mech. Eng. at Stanford), Felix Crevier (L3 Tech, MS in Aero/Astro at Stanford).
Zenith Aerospace is developing a 24/7 real-time earth monitoring solution by building a new solar-powered aircraft capable of perpetual flight.Ā Current commercial earth imaging solution using satellites offer a few minutes of observation across a periods of days or weeks. But narrow windows of observation donāt cut it for agencies that need continuous observation ā e.g. the FBI or the police. Zenith thinks they have a better and more sustainable solution.Ā The founders built their novel aircraft after stints as Stanford grad students in Mechanical Engineering and Material Science.
Safeskies Systems :Ā Making Commercial Drones Safer. Jesse Williams (Navy Veteran, Caltech, Northrop Grumman, Military UAV Expert); Ryan Mangroo (SW Veteran, NYU Tandon, Designed & Coded ServiceNow Cloud Upgrade System)
The big bottleneck for widespread drone adoption is regulation. Operators of large commercial drones are required by the FAA to prove that their drones wonāt fall out of the sky, causing property damage, personal injury, or catastrophic incidents like hitting an airplane. Current approaches to drone safety rely on antiquated parachutes that are too bulky (up to 40% of a droneās weight) and take too long to deploy (up to 2 seconds). Safeskies is led by a Caltech engineer and military veteran who is using a system more akin to what airbag systemās use to build a solution that deploys in 100 milliseconds, and weighs 30% less than alternatives.

My top 2 dividend stocks for 2018
Admiral Group (LSE: ADM) is currently one of the two dividend stocks that form the backbone of my portfolio.Ā
The reason why I like this company is simple, it is a cash cow. Since the beginning of 2005, one share in the group has yielded a total of 941p in dividends. This works out at 275% of the initialĀ share price of 342p on January 1 that year.Ā
And I see no reason why this trend cannot continue. Management aims to pay out around 45% of earnings to investors via a regularĀ dividend with any extra cash returned via a special payout every year. For example, the last interim payout in 2017 was made up of a 37.9p per share regular dividend, and an 18.1p special. Every year since 2005 Admiral has paid a special and regularĀ distribution to investors.Ā
City analysts are expecting shares in the company to yield 5.3% for 2017, and 5.5% for 2018. Both of these figures include special dividends.Ā
Growth aheadĀ
Even though Admiral has proven itself to be an income champion over the past decade, it has lacked growth. Since 2013 earnings per share have only expanded by a tiny 5.7%.Ā
However, the firm is investing heavily in its overseas operations, which are currently proving to be a drain on profits, but when these businesses stop bleeding red ink, the sky could be the limit for the group. Indeed, the opportunity for Admiralās overseas business is enormous. For the year to June 2017, the number of international customers using the firmās services rose 27% to just under 1m.
As this global business grows, along with Admiralās existing UK business, I believe the dividends should continue to flow.Ā
Growth through acquisitionsĀ
My second top income pick for 2018 isĀ Air PartnerĀ (LSE: AIR). ItĀ is currently in the middle of a transition. The company used to be a pure jet broker, but management is now diverting excess funds into buying new businesses, which are more stable. Jet brokering can be a cyclical business, especiallyĀ private jet brokering where Air Partner specialises. Nonetheless, profit margins are wide so the group has been able to generate plenty of cash to reinvest in the business.Ā
The groupās latest deal is the acquisition of air traffic control services provider SafeSkys Ltd, which should help underpin stable long-termĀ growth. Following this, and other significant purchases last year, City analysts are expectingĀ Air Partnerās earnings per share to jump 22% for the year to 31 January. A 5.8% increase in the full-year dividend is expected to give a yield of 3.9%.Ā
Worth a premiumĀ
The one downside is that shares in the company currently trade at a premium valuation of 17.6 times forward earnings. Although considering the firmās double-digit earningsĀ growth rate, and its acquisition strategy, I believe that this looks too expensive. If management can continue to make sensible acquisitions and return cash to investors, over the next few years shares in Air Partner could really take off.Ā
