Here we go again... time for another Phantom Tales of the Night rant dump

⚠️ Warning for major spoilers up to Volume 11

From my previous notes on Vol 10 plus what we learned in Vol 11 there seems to be 5 incarnations of Sasaki that have been highlighted in the story.

Starting from the oldest incarnation...

Singing Bone: ~ we know this is the oldest version since Owner tells us that this is the first time they met.

Lover Sasaki: from volume 11 ~ was somewhat living with Owner and Owner stated that they loved him.

***Super Old Sasaki: from volumes 7 & 9 ~ this version is the Sasaki with Super Old Rei who reveals himself as a skeletal monster. This is the version that is the Author --- this is also the version that Yoshitaka Kudou sees and that Kaibara is researching.

Adult Sasaki: from volume 8 ~ this is the incarnation who was arrested for political writings and whose will-o-the-whisp moved on.

Current Sasaki ~ our present day kiddo.

For Saejima Rei, he does not show up until the Super Old Sasaki timeline. I believe this is where their souls or fates became intertwined. This is probably the only reason that Owner became involved with trying to 'change' the Saejima curse.

We see 2 Saejima Rei incarnations:

Super Old Saejima Rei/Mandarin Orange Rei ~ where their paths seem to first cross (I'm thinking more of Current Rei's grandfather or great grandfather) because Kaibara found the *old* writings of SO Sasaki.

Current Rei ~ teacher and newest incarnation of Rei, brother to Rin and cousin is Tousei, grew up with Yoshitaka Kudou.

With the info from Vol 11 it's not too far fetched to say that Owner feels that SO Saejima "stole" Sasaki from them. I was getting the impression that Sasaki cared for and maybe even loved Rei in that timeline. Perhaps Rei loved him back as he kept his skull with him.

So the one thing Owner wants (family/love?) is taken from them. When Owner kicked out Kaibara, they stated that they "did try to make a home once but couldn't do it."

SO/MO Rei tells Owner that "Only by speaking to others can we end this cycle."

By setting it up for Rei to cross paths with Current Sasaki, Kaibara, and Kudou again... (ppl who understand his family's curse) He is setting up the opportunity to "speak to others" and end the grudge/curse cycle.

The same goes for Sasaki, SO Sasaki wanted a true friend someone he could speak to freely without hiding the knowledge of his body. (Or so he thought...)

This branch goes back to Kudou's conversation with Owner at the waterfall. Owner states that Kudou loves Rei and then asks "what will you do with this knowledge.... if I say he is not happy... are you going to try and make him happy?"

To which Kudou responds, "That's not what it means to wish for a person's happiness. It's to hope for that person to be happy even when you're not there."

The showdown in Vol 11 is centered around Rei. Kudou wants to save him. Tousei wants to consume him. Sasaki relates to him.

Owner thought there was a connection building between them when Sasaki asked what he wanted to fill himself with so long ago. They reach out to him only to be left behind when Sasaki says it isn't about him right now.

Then again at the end of the volume Sasaki asks Owner to tell him what he's been searching for 'up until this life'. It looks like Owner is about to tell him when they are interrupted by Kudou and Rei 😩

Reviewing older volumes, I think Owner is sticking with the reincarnations of Sasaki to figure out what/where his "core" or soul is. It seems that he is hoping for the version that loved him back to return, based off my interpretation of Owner's convo with the Bone Monk in Vol 8.

That ultimately Owner is trying to rebuild their family/home with Sasaki as it once was.

Just finished all of phantom tales of the night. Due to the amount of angst I've been exposed to in the last 48 hours I've decided to writing a nice happy cozy modern day Au where Spider and Butterflie fall in love. Owner will be gender fluid like in cannon (y'all know I'm right). Sasaki and Owner will have a sweet little romance as well. Tousei will be able to grow up like a normal kid. Kudou and Rei get a situationship because Rei has childhood truma needs to work through but eventually they will be happy together. Kaibara and Bone Monk will both get over there crush on Owner eventually and live happy whole lives afterwards. Spider and Kyouko will be sibling because I said so. Youta gets a healthy friendship and that bitch ass Kitsune will be nowhere near any kids. Snow Lass and Mountain Ogre get a happy marriage too. Rin happily lives her life as a married woman with a loving husband.

Makai Knight Retsuden: Hagane no Houkou

A diorama story, a certain man tells a certain boy about the history of the Makai Order as bedtime stories.

A short story collection focusing on various characters from the series thus far, developing more the concept of Nameless Makai Knights. Some aspects of backstory would be retconned.

GARO Yoseki no Wana

A story taking place after the events of Byakuya no Maju. After a few strange encounters, events come to a head at the Sabbac, a tournament to find the strongest Knight beside the Golden Knight, with the appearance of the Scorching Flame Knight YAIBA.

In 2014 a 3-part manga adaptation of the first episode was produced.

The original Pachinko Machine, developers Sansei R&D are key sponsors of the franchise. Incorporating elements of the franchise thus far, and with something of an original story, and debuted the tradition of incorporating original battles.

Guide to GARO: Reintroduction

Approximately 4 years ago, I initiated a series of posts introducing every aspect of the GARO Franchise (all under the GARO tag here) and have endeavoured to keep these up over the years over some 30-40 posts. However, the first major media development since then has recently finished, and while I have already covered it, I felt updating the Introductory post was prudent, and will cover the basics and breakdown the franchise.

The Basics

"Where there is light, shadows lurk and fear reigns. But by the blade of Knights, mankind was given hope."

In the world of GARO exists HORRORS, demonic entities from the Makai Realm, which consume humans, and can possess those who do all to darkness. When possessing a human a Horror can only be identified by the reaction of it's eyes to a Madou Flame. The only thing stopping the Horrors are the Makai Order.

The greatest opposition comes in the for of the Makai Knights, warriors who fight with weapons and magical, wolf-shaped armour made of mystical Soul Metal, the armour summoned by creating circles of light with their weapons which the armour emerges from. The most revered, and commonly considered the strongest Knight is the Golden Knight GARO. While the Knights focused on in a series are normally titles Knights with a unique armour, many Knights are without title and possess a generic armour. An Armour and Title will typically be passed down from father to son, or master to student. Due either to a law or some other factor, women may not be Makai Knights

The other main opponents to the Horrors are the Makai Priests, who rely on spells either using their Madou Brushes or other magical items. Due to lacking armour, in combat Makai Priests may sometimes have to rely on magical familiars, or specialised Madou Tools created by subjugating Horrors.

Some titled Makai Knights are partnered with special Madougu, sentient jewelry acting as avatars for benign Horrors to communicate with a Makai Knight they are contracted to, offering insights on the Horrors they fight or helping detect their activities, GARO's eternal partner is the Madou Ring, Zaruba, the only character to have definitively appeared in live action and animation. The prevalence of Madougu partners varies wildly by era, being almost universal among titled Titles Knights at some points, and virtually unheard of in others.

Certain Makai Knights can, after sealing 100 Horrors, be given a challenge the completion of which allows them the use of a Madou Horse associates with their armour.

Dependent on the era, Makai Order members act in their own volition, under the guidance in senior Makai Priests, or under the auspices of Watchdogs who oversee activity within a territory.

A common but not universal feature of the franchise are Dark Makai Knights, who have fallen to darkness in some way. This has been done in so many different ways I won't go into it. Dark Makai Priests have also appeared, but are less common. Another common feature is acquiring a special transformation for the final battle that is typically seen as a one-off.

Rather than list every entry in release order, I will be breaking my introductions into eras, some of which can be further divided. In essence though, there are 2 distinct eras, plus a few extra, and the anime.

"I merely put into words the most basic of human desires. You would have those things, for a time."

She wants to lunge across the table and choke whatever life there is from him. It's the knowledge that it would change nothing about their predicament that keeps her in place.

"Rei was right, you drag us around like puppets on strings. I'm not going to play into your little game anymore. I want nothing to do with you or any of this." She gestures to the traditional room around them.

They both know she means beyond the walls, to the curse and the role she plays in a centuries old feud.

With an exhausted sigh, she turns on her heel towards a lone steel door; a blaring oddity among the three surrounding shoji walls in the room.

Hand gripping the handle, she pauses when Owner speaks up again.

"While you may fear the curse, you still desire the Slayer and his child."

The door slams against the outer brick wall as she shoves it open. Her boots hitting pavement as she steps out into an alleyway.

Another of the countless backdoors to the Murakumo Inn. 

She halts, turning to look back at the demon sitting on the tatami floor. Two finished tea cups lay on the table before him.

There's a moment of deja vu, memories of enjoying tea together. Of Owner entertaining a lonely child with stories of demons, heroes, families, and love.

Despite her frustration, she finds herself thanking Owner for the tea.

He gives her an infuriating grin, "Your secret now belongs to me. Until next time." 

A tendril of darkness oozes from beneath the table, sliding across the floor and reaches up to pull the door shut.

She has a feeling that if she were to reopen the door, it would no longer be connected to the Inn.

A chill creeps down her spine like a spider's dance; she spins around to glance along the seemingly empty alley. 

There is a rustle before a small snake slithers out from behind a bag of trash. She uses her boot to kick it away with a look of detest.

Lightning flashes above and she curses under her breath. Pulling her coat around her, she makes her way to the main road. 

She has just stepped through the threshold of her apartment when she's roughly pushed against the wall.

The door slams shut beside her.

"You were at the Inn?" Rei grips her by the arms. 

She mentally groans, the snake must have been one of his spies.

No point in hiding it then, "I did."

"What did he want, what did he say?" He studies her with narrowed eyes, cold and wary. 

"Rei, I'm tired of this."

"What?"

"I'm tired. I'm done. No more demons or slaying. No more curse." 

It hurts to say it out loud she realizes, makes it feel real.

"What are you saying?"

"It's over, Rei. We are over," she motions her hand between them, "this is goodbye."

"No, baby, please. Please..." his face stricken with panic. "Whatever lies that monster told you-"

"Stop it!" He stiffens and her heart aches in her chest. "If...if I stay, it will never be over. I will always be second to your endless need for revenge; to this curse. We both know this."

His head falls forward, hair covering his eyes. "Okay," he utters softly after a few moments.

"O-okay? Just like that..." 

"Ju-just give me tonight." His eyes find hers again, pleading. "Let me touch you, let me love you."

Love.

That hurts the worst. 

Rei's not sentimental, he's only ever uttered those words to her once before. 

One more night, to feel his touch. To pretend they're just another normal couple in the world. 

It's so very tempting.

Spoilers for Volume 12 of Phantom Tales of the Night

I feel like the last volume left a lot of questions.

Like, I'm guessing Sasaki remembers? And that Owner's secret is that he loves Sasaki? But there's still so much left unanswered.

How/why did Owner get involved with the Saejima family? If the curse or powers were there before Sasaki met the one Saejima, was Owner a part of them starting?

I'd have liked more closure regarding Rei's sister, Kaibara, and other characters.

I also feel like Owner's motives for many of his actions, particularly with Butterfly and Spider, as well as his nature, were never revealed.

It just feels very open-ended.
