Before/During/After Covid 19 Blog

Let me start by saying that I know there are a lot of things that are less than ideal at the moment, in this time of world pandemic. Of course, it would be better if there weren’t people dying, better if there were more respirators in reserve, better if people weren’t hoarding supplies and better if we could visit each other, embrace, kiss and hold hands.

But there once was a world that existed before quarantine, before isolation, before pandemic. In this distant time before Covid 19 (BC), we all worked in jobs that we didn’t even know were necessary, on contracts that didn’t guarantee work the next day. We worked to earn money that was swiftly taken from us and given out to wealthier people as debt repayments, housing and living costs. We would live a meagre existence - entertained by each other’s company, the occasional holiday and drinks with friends. Hardly an exquisite life, yet it would bankrupt us all the same. Our parents - who were told their lifelong tax contributions would be spent on their retirement, then stared down the barrel of a decade more work, followed by a brief impoverished rest, followed before death.

There was a world BC when we were encouraged to maintain unachievable beauty standards, wealth expectations, lifestyle attributes and ownership of ever-changing items of grandeur. A world where the costs of the failures by individuals to maintain the buoyancy of currency were attributed and paid for by everyone, yet when all this caused mental health problems in many of us - those affected would then be attribute the problems to and be paid for by the individual.

In this world, there was an endless consumption of irreplaceable resources, causing irreparable destruction to a delicate balance of life. A world at war, in constant battles over influence and power. A world where all this was done all in the pursuit of wealth, that only a tiny percentage of the population would benefit from. 

It was a world that didn’t make sense - and we all felt the contradictions weighing heavy on our hearts, from the second we woke up, to the second we fell sleep if, at all, we could sleep. And sadly it was a world that helped to cause this situation in the first place.

Right now, however, we live in a world where only essential jobs are being done, all other workers are sat at home, resting or finding other ways they can benefit their families or communities. 

We are living in a world where people are valuing health and life instead of profit, image or power.

We are living in a world where the basic ingredients for a dignified life and are already in occurrence, like houses, water and heat, are stewarded only by the people who use and need them and not feeding the profits of the already-wealthy.

Right now, we are ling in a world that is set up for what people need, not what those who hoard profit or power need. And you really have to ask yourself, once all this is over do you really want to go back to how it was before?

The Guardian earlier today released an article about why #DominicCummings has at no point trended on Twitter during this ongoing saga. They smugly said that it was just down to porn filters (which is also, apparently, why you have to type his full name in the search bar and it’s not suggested to you).

I am not convinced this is the full story.

For example, it has been a while since I have seen “Boris Johnson” on trending, but during that time, I have seen #Johnston #SackBoris #SackDomAndBoris and #BorisHasFailedTheNation.

Equally, the search used to suggest various misspellings, which now are mostly gone- the current one seems to be #DominicCumins, which is new.

For a while, #CumGate was allowed to trend, but that quickly disappeared being briefly replaced by #CumGates, and again, you have to type them both in in full to see them now.

I wonder if there is some sort of abuse of the reporting system going on, and that’s how they are getting some of these hashtags suppressed?

The Guardian article would consider me a conspiracy theorist, and it’s also true I am not an expert on twitter, but I would genuinely love to hear opinions and theories on this!
