EXCUSE ME?! What? Why? How?! Danika was hiding so much stuff, guys 🤦‍♀️ and Bryce told her in the beginning she had to look for the Horn for Jesiba and Danika didn’t even flinch!

And the plot thickens! I took a long break from my Empire of Storms reread. But now that I'm back at it... I'm back on my "huh... that sounded weirdly familiar..." kick!

So Aelin, Aedion, and Lysandra are about to liberate Illium aka the original home of the Mycenians (more on them in a post to come... one day). Aedion's basically like, "We could just make a stealthy exit, why are you hell bent on liberating this place in particular?" It feels like an unnecessary risk, but of course Aelin always has her secret reasons. One big reason? Brannon's Flame inside the temple complex. A big symbol in itself.

So Aelin says, "Symbols have power." And my brain itched... luckily Aedion helped me out a bit by reminding me he quite literally says the same thing to Dorian and Chaol about him wielding the Sword of Orynth aka an ancient blade I've already had my eye on as you can see in the earlier post I made during my Heir of Fire reread.

From my earlier post I was eyeing some similar vibes I was getting from the Sword of Orynth and the Fendyr family sword. Perhaps even suggesting that they are one in the same... or at least related? Who can say?

Similar to the Sword of Orynth, the Fendyr blade is wielded for its symbolic strength. It's a point of contention between Danika and her mother Sabine. The Prime grants Danika the sword when it calls to her on her 18th bday, which means Sabine gets skipped over despite waiting for it for centuries. This also causes Sabine's claim to the "wolfie throne" to come into question... meaning the sword is more than a sword. And Danika knows it.

And if you think Sabine hates that her daughter got the Fendyr sword... it holds no candle to how pissed she gets re: Bryce withholding the sword and eventually using it to casually save the world.

She really doesn't love it when the Prime calls Bryce "a true wolf" for using the Fendyr sword to save Lunathion... Sabine even clarifies that he's just confused by the power of the sword not Bryce. No, that's not the truth, Sabine.

Anyway, before my antennas even started going off about other "symbols have power" moments from Throne or Glass or any connection to the Fendyr family sword... I thought of a moment between Ruhn and the Autumn King...

We know Sarah loves a catchphrase and repetition for emphasis, but I think it's a particularly interesting repetition that alludes to some of the "bigger picture" themes that are becoming increasingly more important as plots/worlds start to converge.

Not only are these swords, the horn, and Aelin's fire literal weapons of power, but they symbolize a power/force/movement that can challenge the various forces looking to stamp out hope or allusions of control. The powers demonstrated have been relegated to the (incomplete or inconsistent) histories or called myth... and yet here they are and kicking ass.

Something I'll be thinking about and subplots I think warrant a closer read.

Can we talk about Ithan lol

Sarah really had us believing that he was gonna be romantically tied to sigrid (lost fendyr wolf) only to have him unalive her BY ACCIDENT (kind of) and then try to resurrect her only to make her a soul sucking reaper LMFAO I CANT and throughout the entire book ithan’s all about wanting to find a new leader to be the replacement for sabine and wanting a better future for the wolves only to fail to see that HE IS the prime and future that the wolves need😂

Also the ithan and perry love line foreshadowing has me wanting more ngl i cant believe sarah janet maas is gonna make me wait another 3-4 years minimum for the next cc book i hate life

I didn't mind our resident boyfailures

Ithan and Tharion are disliked after HOFAS, but I don't mind them. I like character-driven stories and I think that characters are allowed to fail and to try to do better. These two in particular stand in juxtaposition to one another.

Ithan is someone who always acts altruistically. Tharion is someone who IS capable of caring, but who's also rather selfish.

Ithan is defined by being a younger brother and a son with Connor and his parents having died, someone who was a sunball player and is defined by that without being one anymore, a pup without a pack etc. He's a boy and has to man-up. His HEART is in the right place, but he searched for conduits. He does not try to make the change he wants. Instead he tries to do it through a Fendyr. He is confined in the Asteri having presented a specific line as the apex predators and righful rulers of the wolves. Killing Sigrid, expecting that SHE if anyone can rise above vengefulness and being a ripper and find the noble feelings and raw potential inside her and realising he was being a fool are all part of his journey until he steps up. Watching the death of a prime that was wise and caring to Sabine was part of his awakening.

Tharion's arc is about learning to be selfless. Where Ithan ended up fighting to save his friends, Tharion ended up with the Vipe to save himself. Stepping up for a woman who was in danger and slowly finding love through that after a series of failures and selfish decisions was his own arc.

I don't think that either of those were bad despite being frustrating.

HoFaS ends with some lose threads. The world has just had a great change, a massive upheaval, and it's highlighted how this is a prime opportunity for people grasping for power. Tharion's narration highlights this and how the Viper Queen is one of them... As he makes his way back to the Meat Market looking for his missing wife, Sathia, and runs into Ariadne.

Tharion's storyline literally ends on a cliff-hanger and sets up the Viper Queen as one of the antagonists. It seems fitting as well, as we already had the big, epic, arc and we can now focus on more localized conflicts and the aftermath of overthrowing the Asteri. I would also think we are seeing more of Ariadne in general and maybe Flynn as he is Sathia's brother, much as he complains about her.

Another plot thread is the missing Fendyr Heir (named Sigrid). So, shit happened, she died during HOFAS and came back wrong as a Reaper. Frankly, I did not get a good impression of Sigrid. Ithan believes for a good, good time she's the answer to the Sabine question, but she struck me as self-righteous and not the good kind of Fendyr deep down. Becoming a Reaper made it worse. She could be redeemed but honestly, I'd rather see her become a villain.

So you have this plotline for Ithan, and we also maybe get hints of a love interest in the form Perry Ravenscroft, Amelie's sister. This storyline also ties in with another unresolved one: Hypaxia's. Over the course of the book, Morganthia overthrows Hypaxia and she's far less of a kind and understanding rule, ergo, likely to be problematic in a post-Asteri world. Also, Hypaxia is the Head of Flame and Shadow now, which also makes her a natural ally of Ithan when searching for you know. Undead Wolf Heir.

after a year++ of putting the book off due to my studies — i finally had the time to properly immerse myself. but of course, after ANOTHER reread of HOEAB. i can’t believe the third book will come next year.

he's not entirely surprised that bryce had told her everything, from what he'd known, the two of them had been as close as two people could possibly be without a mate bond binding them together. baxian almost smiled, nodding a bit. "figured you'd have heard about that, she was pretty shocked when she found out." but he couldn't blame danika for keeping it a secret, he'd done the same. sabine and sandriel both would have had plenty to say about the two of them together, and considering how highly the fendyr line was valued, he doubted he'd have been allowed to continue on with the only heir that line, mate bond or no. "that was stupid, dani, i don't even think you were born in the time i remembered, what if it didn't work?" he loved them for trying it, loved every stupid foolish plan that she put their entire soul into, but if he'd hurt her, if he'd killed her because the mate bond didn't click... "if it ever happens again, don't do that, please." he'd lost them once already, if he lost her again, this time at his own hand, he wouldn't survive it. he's sure of that much, he'd follow her into the fucking afterlife and pray they'd forgive him for it. "i'll talk to her soon, i just... i wasn't even really paying attention to where i was going until i was here." blindly following her scent, letting the bond tug him towards somewhere he could collapse in safety, he hadn't even been surprised when he realized where he'd ended up, the only thing he could feel in response to it was blind relief and desperation to get to them, to see her with his own eyes. the desire to keep her from seeing his chest is the only thing that gets him moving quickly enough to be in the shower before she gets back, he doesn't think he can explain the asteri right now, if bryce hadn't already gotten to it. "i don't think holstrom is going to be super thrilled about that, but i'm sure it'll be fine until i get back to my place and get something else." he mutters, because really, it's not like he has many other options, even if he was much inclined to deny his just returned from the dead mate something so simple. in another scenario, he'd throw out much more resistance, but he doesn't have it in him to fight with danika right now, despite how many times he'd looked over petty arguments, wishing he could fight with her just one more time. he's quiet for a moment in response to her confession, before speaking up. "i've been waiting to see you again for years, danika. you deserved a better welcome back, but don't think i'm not over the fucking moon that you're here."

the reactive anger is short lived, letting out a huffed sigh as they tried to calm their emotions. it was.. a lot. between the anger of what had happened, grieving a friend, and gods, all she wanted to do right now was be relieved her mate was himself again, but at what cost, right? how could she be so selfishly happy that baxian was okay, when bryce had just lost her own mate. information she would have to explain to her friend. it was all too much and it came out in a snippy tone. bax's words register and she lets out another sigh. "i know. bryce filled me in." she lets her own voice soften as her shoulders relaxed, forehead pressed against his chest for another moment. her body is screaming to just wrap herself around him, to have him return the action, but gods, the last thing she wants right now is to have hunt's blood seeping into her skin as well. "i figured if you tried to hit me and couldn't, it'd spark something." it didn't matter what it was that ignited in him, even if it was just a question. but she thought it was better than nothing, right? if he tried to raise a hand to her, if the mate bond was triggered at all, she hoped she could get him back to this before anything disastrous happened. she had to have a plan, and a back up plan, and another after that, if she was going to figure out how to fix everything now that she was alive again. a curt nod answers his comment, letting her hand drop to her side, fingers flexing out of their fist. "that's the least you deserve, bax. you're so fucking lucky bryce didn't find you first." though, she was sure her friend wouldn't actually kill bax, they weren't confident he would walk away without bleeding. "i'm not the person you need to apologize to." she added, waving off the protest as she moved down the hall to grab towels, ducking into ithan's room for a moment to grab a change of clothes before she returns to the bathroom as she hears the water running. "i think ithan's clothes should fit. i grabbed some of his sweatpants, i doubt he'll care." she moved to perch herself on the counter, staring at the closed curtain. "can i be entirely selfish for a second?" she paused. "as shitty as the situation is, i'm glad you're back."
