Philippines May 2019
Days 4/5/6/7 – Manila to Kawayan Cove to Puerto Galera
We’ve been experiencing pretty sketchy internet so I’ve been building up a few days worth of writing. We’ve been promised that it will get better, when it does you’ll be reading this!
Saturday evening (of day 3) we were visited in Manila by our friends Noel and Michelle Tanada (more on them later), and did some catching up over a few too many drinks until the wee hours. We didn’t quite get the early start on our drive to Kawayan Cove we’d intended, but managed to crawl out of bed and get going by late morning. Once there we checked into our AirBnB condo then headed right over to take a look at the house. Good progress but it’s entering the phase where you have to look a bit harder to see it – when you go from no walls to walls it’s obvious and dramatic, but now we’re starting into the finishing work. The major difference is the roof – we have the corrugated aluminum panels up with the insulation underneath. Over here, the aluminum takes the place of roofing felt – it’s the real waterproofing component. The concrete shingles will be installed over that, possibly in the next week. In addition to the roof, the plumbing and electrical are both roughed in.
I’ve often said that construction over here is all “steel and concrete” but there is actually some wood in our home. The soffits (under the roof eaves) and ceiling of the open entry patio will be mahogany tongue and groove. I was expecting that but hadn’t thought about the framing holding it up which it turns out is also mahogany. I guess it’s probably less expensive over here than other woods, plus it’s very resistant to the heat and humidity.
Monday was national election day in the Philippines. A lot of local elections plus half the Senate was up for grabs. One thing they do here is ban all alcohol sales the day before and day of an election (don’t worry about us, we’d stocked up before the ban took effect). This brings up an interesting question – if we had this in the US, would we have elected Trump if we were all sober?
While we weren’t looking, Habagat happened. Habagat is the annual shifting of the trade winds, an actual 180 degree shift from offshore to onshore winds (here on the west coast at least) that happens literally overnight. Habagat portends the coming of the rainy season in the Philippines and usually begins in the May-June timeframe, lasting until November-December. The effect at Kawayan Cove is that the ocean swell is now coming into the cove, bringing actual waves to the beach. Not enough for surfing, the shore break is about 1 foot high at best, but it’s not the placid cove it is during Amihan which is the other part of the year with its gentler east-to-west winds. The undesirable effect is that these winds blow more trash from the ocean into the cove. The staff here does a good job keeping our beach clean, but while I was snorkeling in the cove I collected about 20 pounds of plastic bags, cups, wrappers, and one paint can from the water, just making a small dent in the overall amount. The picture below is of an adjacent beach without the Kawayan Cove staff to clean it up. Refer to previous rants about plastics in the ocean…
Speaking of junk in the ocean, our previously mentioned friends Noel and Michelle drove down to visit us on Monday at Kawayan Cove. Our condo was 2-bedroom so they had a place to spend the night. Though we’ve known them for a long time we’ve just learned about their involvement with an ocean conservation group (www.coralmovement.org) of which Michelle has become president. The group’s primary efforts are to restore coral reefs with innovative re-planting methods which seem to be very effective. Reef restoration is just one aspect of the whole ocean conservation thing, equally important are education, shoreline cleanup and rehabilitation, control of pollution and waste, as well as many others. We spent a lot of time talking about their group’s efforts, leaving us with an option to join them, as it fits well with our intentions to get involved with conservation work over here.
Tuesday (day 6) is for going to a new island, for both Georgia and me. Mindoro is the pretty large island directly south of Luzon (where Manila and Kawayan Cove are located). Close enough to be reached by ferry, we decided to take our first “road trip” and drive to Batangas City where we could load the car onto a RORO (a Philippines auto ferry, ‘RORO’ is slang for “Roll On, Roll Off”) and sail to the port of Puerto Galera, Mindoro.
We decided to take the 3:00 ferry and got to Batangas port by 1:00 as we were advised get there a couple hours early. We went through various inspections of car and contents and were then instructed to drive to “line 15” to wait for the ferry. We found the appropriate line and waited, and waited… until a little after 3:00 we asked an official-looking type who was walking around when the ferry would actually leave. 6:00 he said! We never got any explanation at all about what happened to the 3:00 ferry. Was it full? Did it get cancelled? Did the boat sink? We’ll never know. Anyway we finally loaded onto the ferry about 5:30 and it set sail for the 2-hour voyage a little after 6. After a quick off-loading process we reached our hotel around 8:30, pretty starving as we’d only had an early lunch while on the road. Couldn’t see much of the place as it was dark but all we really wanted to see was the restaurant which thankfully was still open.
Today we finally saw where we’re staying, a very nice place right on the water in a quiet mangrove-lined inlet between Puerto Galera and Sabang. Not many impressive beaches in this part of Mindoro, which is mostly known for it’s world-class scuba diving. What beaches they have are lined with dive shops and bars, and are said host a pretty active party scene. Those rowdy scuba divers, what can you do… join them maybe? This afternoon we met with Ms. Rose, the PADI dive instructor here at the resort, who will be our teacher for the next few days, as we (hopefully) will earn at least the “Scuba Diver” certification and possibly have time for the next level up, “Open Water Diver”. Stay tuned!

The other side of Puerto Galera 8 OUT OF 10 TARGET TRAVEL DESTINATIONS FOR 2017!!! I AM TOO CLOSE FOR MY GOAL HOORAY!!! I'M GOING BEYOND 10 LOL! Puerto Galera is one of the most popular tourist destinations here in the Philippines, but when they think of "Puerto Galera", the first thing that comes to their mind is either 'White Beach' or 'Sabang Beach'. These are the most common part of Galera, but little did you know there is a hidden gem on the other side. If you're into fun activities especially at night, or a family-friendly beach, go to White Beach or Sabang beach. (But if you're more into beach party, choose White Beach). If you're into diving, Go to Muelle Beach. But, if you are more into nature, and really doesn't want an uncrowded beach, like, you want a peace of mind and more on relaxation.... (Like me) TALIPANAN BEACH, ANINUAN, PUERTO GALERA is perfect for YOU! The water is a little bit colder than the usual because the water from Aninuan Falls (roughly a 20 min walk from talipanan) is going through the beach where we stayed at. The water is crystal clear, you can definitely swim with the fishes and it's really a wonderful experience! But I highly suggest that you must have an aqua shoes because the beach is rocky, and you might stepped on the corals, so that you can also avoid being hurt. The sand is fine white but it's really rocky along the beach. It's a really beautiful place. You definitely wouldn't want to miss bringing your snorkling gears, you don't actually need to rent a boat just to see the corals, because the corals and the fishes is just near the shore. It's not a family friendly beach because the water is high. Be extra careful. We stayed at Sunny Beach Resort, the staffs is really accomodating and they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is ranging from 250-500php per dish. We didn't bring anything so we have no choice to eat at their restaurant. The acommodation is not that expensive, we booked an airconditioned room for just 1,500 PHP per night with free breakfast. They serve a really good food, you won't regret it even though its quite expensive. The room is so nice and clean as well, their bathroom has hot water. It's a really really good hotel. I would rate it 5 STARS. The place is so beautiful and breathtaking I swear, there's alot of hotels that you can choose from along Talipanan, but it ranges from 1,500PHP and up. I must say, the accommodation in Talipanan is more expensive than the white or sabang beach. When we went there, it's like we owned the whole place. Especially we went off-peak, eventhough it's peak season, that part of Galera is not that crowded. HOW TO GET THERE: We rode a bus (JAM Liner) at Cubao going to Batangas Port around 4 AM, the fare is 175PHP, when we reached the Port, we went straight to the ticket booth, the ferry line we took is Father & Sons that will cost you 600 PHP each (Round Trip) going to Muelle Port, then pay the terminal fee of 30 PHP per head. It's a 2 and a half ferry ride. When we got to Muelle Port, there's a free shuttle when you get there and will give you a ride straight to the hotel where you are going to stay at. But you need to pay the environmental fee of 50 PHP. For going home, the shuttle will pick you up at the hotel you just have to text them any time of your choice. If you're thinking to bring some foods, you may do that but take note, it will be really inconvenient for you and besides, there's no grill and such at Talipanan. But there are sari-sari stores / carinderia / eatery outside Talipanan, BUT it's a 15-minute walk. So that's it! I hope I gave you another idea! If you have further question about this Place, feel free to ask me! Next stop: I'm thinking about going to Romblon :)

The Beauty of Puerto Galera
By Kirsten T. Mahilum
Puerto Galera, or Port of Galleons in English, was a convenient place for sheltering ships against bad weather during the ancient era. It is where the Chinese traded their goods with the people here. With its still deep-secured bay and harbors, it still remained its purpose in sheltering ships. It is a municipality that is located in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. It was once dubbed as "One of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World," and it doesn't lie. Because, forest-clad mountains surround the crashing waves of the sea, while the powdery white beaches have many coconut trees which are surrounded by the clear mix of azure and seafoam green sea. It is also surrounded by beautiful faunas, majestic waterfalls, flowing rivers and streams, picturesque sceneries, and more.
The town has approximately 42 kilometers of coastline and a diverse underwater ecosystem that serves as home to a variety of marine species. No wonder UNESCO recognized Puerto Galera as a Man and Biosphere Reserve in 1973 and became one of the most sought-after best diving spots in the world.
Three to four hours is the estimated time interval in land and sea travelling from Metro Manila to Puerto Galera. First, you need to ride a bus. There are several terminals to choose from: Cubao, Sampaloc, Buendia, and Alabang going to Batangas Port which is the jump-off point. In Batangas Port, there are ferries and ro-ros that you should catch if you want to go to Muelle or Balatero. You can catch it from 5am to 7pm. Jeeps and tricycles are basic modes of transportation. The minimum regular fare is 8 pesos for jeep and 10 pesos for tricycle.
And at last! You’re in Puerto Galera already. You can now visit the beautiful destinations of my dear province. The first must-visit place that I recommend to you is the Tamaraw Falls(it got its name from the species of buffalo called Tamaraw which is common in Mindoro. It is one of the most majestic waterfalls that you will ever see. It stands at 423 feet and is as tall as a 5-storey-building. Because of the twin falls merging together, you will notice the unique Y-shaped dropping waters. You don’t have to hike or trek if you want to see the beauty of our beloved waterfalls, you can already see it on the highway. But, if you want to see it up-close, you have to pay for the entrance fee which is 30 pesos for adults and 15 pesos for children.
After that, you can visit the pride of our province, the White Beach in Isidro which is known for its powdery white sand. Numerous hotels and lodges can be found here where you can stay for as long as you want. There are also other white beaches aside from that, there’s the Bayanan Beach, Long Beach, Coco Beach, Buri Beach, and many more. If you’re interested in diving, you can go to our lovely diving sites. Some of the most popular diving destinations are Hole in The Wall, Japanese Wreck and Sabang Wrecks. You can also do hiking and trekking in the mountains like Mount Malasimbo.
Of course, the tour is not complete if you don’t get to eat in their famous restaurants like Luca Cucia Italiana, Resto Veranda, Ciao Italia Pizzerias, Hemingway Bistro, Relax Restaurant, and more.
You can do everything in Puerto Galera. Swim, dive, eat, take good pictures, and have an enjoyable time. So, I suggest you visit Puerto Galera immediately after the pandemic. I assure you that you’ll never regret it and you’ll remember it for the rest of your life. With all the picturesque sceneries surrounding you, you’ll forget all the bad things that happened to you for a while. So, c’mon in Puerto Galera.

Sabang?White Beach?
Sabang
City State Tower, Mabini St., Ermita, Manila
8:45am Sabang
站点:Sabang 码头、PuertoGalera(MUELLE)码头

Weekend beach fix: Puerto Galera
I had quite a busy week with work and art festivals everywhere in the metro. So to get my energy back and ease my sickness from the hustle and bustle of Manila, I gave myself a quick beach fix.
This time, the sun is finally out!
For the weekend, I chose Puerto Galera. This is my 4th time here and I’m not too much of a fan if compared to other beaches around the country. But there’s a music event happening and I thought I should check it out (It’s actually because my crush is performing. lol). It’s just an easy 4-hour travel from Manila anyway.
A panoramic shot of the more secluded area of White Beach
Puerto Galera is one of the towns of Mindoro and is easily accessible by ferries from Batangas Port. The ferry ride takes 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minutes.
Before heading to my hotel, I strolled a little at Sabang Beach and had lunch at the infamous Papa Fred’s Steakhouse. Then I talked to a local to take me to Aninuan Beach by motorbike, so yay (yeah i love motorbike rides)!
I was a little tired by the time I got to my hotel, but the view is really lovely from my room, and right then I knew that I made the right decision.
This is the view straight from my room. All worth it, I know.
I spent most afternoon appreciating the beach, lying on the sand, and chatting while drinking beer. And the most relaxing thing and my personal favourite of course: massage by the beach!
Beer and conversations
More night stroll, drinks, and chit chat. It was the second day of the music event and the artist I was looking forward to wasn’t playing that night (too bad), but I just enjoyed the rest of the night – the venue was close to my hotel anyway.
The next morning, I woke up at 6 to run a little at the shore while enjoying my iPod’s music, but it rained a little so I decided to just have my early morning healthy heavy breakfast.
Yes, that’s bacon, egg, and fried rice
Luckily, it was sunny by 9 in the morning, so I had my chance to swim, tan, and take vainy photos of myself (because why not. lol).
I am not that tan – I wish I am. It was maybe the lighting cos it was raining.
I actually planned to do a little trek to a waterfalls nearby, but the sea is so inviting that I just decided to have a laid back Sunday morning before heading back to Manila (unfortunately, it has to happen).
Well, that’s it for this weekend’s beach fix. Sea you soon!

Nice and Cozy at White Beach Resort in Puerto Galera
Out of Town Blog Nice and Cozy at White Beach Resort in Puerto Galera
Nice and Cozy at White Beach Resort in Puerto Galera
When you find yourself going back to a certain person or object to fuel your interest, it most likely means that you will reciprocate the same. That’s what happened when I came upon the friendly lady manning the White Beach Resort Puerto Galera booth at the Batangas Pier during my impromptu visit to Puerto Galera.
A sunny day on White Beach Resort
I did not know much about this famous beach in Oriental Mindoro, so I approached the White Beach Resort booth for information, while the lady tried to sell me their room at 1,200 php instead of their published rate of 1,500 php.
I declined her kind offer as I was thinking of finding a nice room there at White Beach itself once we arrived. Yet, as more questions popped in my mind, the more I returned to that lady for more assistance.

When the time came for us to exit the gate and go to the boat, I went back to the White Beach Resort lady and asked if she could give me the room at a lower price. She eventually agreed and our accommodation became finally secured.
Soon after, we were on a big pump boat crossing the channel from Batangas to the Northwestern side of Oriental Mindoro in the midst of a dynamic seascape of islands changing from bustling coasts to a sinewy island lushly coated with tropical bounties, subdued by the dimming sunset sky.
Laid back Puerto Galera White Beach
A couple of hours later we were at Muelle port in Puerto Galera hailing a tricycle that would take us to the famous White Beach.
Relieved about a room being ready for us on White Beach, we traversed along the darkened road until a brightly lit road opened for us, signifying that we were already at our destination.

The tricycle driver took us to White Beach Lodge, assuming that it was the same as White Beach Resort. Though by mistake, we got to walk a bit more than a hundred meters along the beach, passing a White Beach Hotel and finally seeing the sign of the much anticipated White Beach Resort.

The resort’s open-air restaurant fronting the sea was packed with guests dining over the coast’s flavourful fresh sea catches, whereby a lady who was receiving payments from guests was also in charge of the room reservations.
A nice lady then led us to the resort’s four-storey building and assisted us into our room on the second floor.
The room was simple, spacious and neat; an air-conditioned room with a single bed, a queen-sized bed and a private bathroom, plus clean towels and toiletries that were set to fulfill our basic comfort.
We went to the beach as soon as we got ready and watched Luna play with the sand and the water. We ordered Grilled Chicken with rice from the restaurant and brought it to the beach to let Luna eat her dinner while playing in the breakwater.

Much later, we were back inside the comfort of our room, dozing off blissfully on our bed’s cushy mattress and clean beddings.
We woke up early the next day to have fun in the sun. Whilst beyond a few steps from our bedroom, we were back on the beach, searching for pink-colored pebbles and swimming in the sea.

We basked under the sun until right before noon in order to fix our things for our impending departure.
The multi-tasking staff in the resort’s restaurant later called a tricycle for us that would take us to Calapan terminal, which cost was 150php.

Sabang Beach
(Caticlan Airport,MPH)
(Kalibo Airport,KLO)
(Dumaguete)
